PIER AND JETTY PART FOUR. In Fond Memory Of The Late Mick Twyman

The iron Jetty of Eugenius Birch was a solid piece of engineering. Whereas later piers presented an impression of lightness and curves, this pioneering project looked like it was meant to withstand the elements. The supporting piles of the main neck were of 16 inch diameter, grouped together in clusters of 5 strongly braced, and there were 14 of these supporting the two massive 4 feet deep girders of the side parapets to the decking. Longer at 1,240 feet than the Jarvis’s wooden Jetty, the new structure had a rectangular landing stage with a staircase giving access to lower levels of landing platform to cope with any stage of the tide. The job of construction was estimated to require 18 months to 2 years, and Birch design was put out to contracting engineers for tenders. One Samuel Bastow of Hartlepool, put in a bid of only £10,750, some £12,000 less than his nearest rival, and the Pier & Jetty Co. letting their greed overcome judgement, accepted it. That decision was to cost the commerce of the town dearly as, due to the chaos caused by Bastow’s terminally slow rate of progress, the passenger numbers arriving by steam boat plummeted because of lack of Jetty. Despite many optimistic forecasts of the opening dates which came and went with monotonous regularity, Bastow was still plugging away in April 1856, when he was sacked having already spent £15,400. Now 3½ years into the project the designer himself was forced to step in and oversee the completion and in the summer of 1857 it was finally finished.

In 1829 the Pier & Harbour Co. had decided that the Lighthouse and Droit House were rather too plain for their tastes, so they commissioned new designs. The designs submitted by Edmunds were selected, and the Droit House of today, as pretty a piece of Georgian architecture as you will find is a replica of the original, that having been destroyed by bombing in WW11. His lighthouse was a huge thing in the form of a Doric column with an ornamental gallery and lantern on top. there was much concern expressed in 1829 that the structure, much heavier than it’s predecessor, had been built on the same circular nest of timber piles with no strengthening, and predictions were that it wouldn’t last that long and would tumble. As it happens, it did tumble, but not for a very long time. Despite the occasional remedial work needed after violent storms, the stone Pier proved the basic efficiency of Rennies design, and Biorch’s Jetty served admirably too. If there was an Achilles Heel with them though, it was that they both sprang off the land at too low a level, making them prone to damage from storms on top of big spring tides. The landing stages at the Jetty head underwent several stages of enlargement and improvement, and the entrance to the neck at the landward end underwent rebuilding after it was demolished by a drifting wreck in 1877. In 1898 slipways were opened on either side of the Jetty to house the towns two Lifeboats, a great improvement on the old method of launching with horses from the sands. With the addition of a Pavilion and Bandstand to the jetty head the original landing stage blossomed into a first-rate pleasure pier, but the sea took its regular toll during storms. In December 1897, both Pier and Jetty suffered serious damage, Droit House being Cracked from the bottom to top, and in 1937 another storm tore up a lot of the Jetty decking. In 1953 the great Storm demolished the Lighthouse of 1829 when the foundations gave way, and buildings on the stone Pier were reduced to rubble and the Jetty pretty well wrecked. A fire in 1964 destroyed the Jetty Pavilion, and in 1978 the Jetty was completely destroyed in that years Great Storm, the sad remains not being finally cleared away until 1998 To Advertise in The Margate Handbook please Phone 01843 571145

Grandad has a day out Grandad took a trip up to London on the train, as he fancied a day out. He left early in the morning and spent the whole day doing the “Touristy” bits, he had a great time and when it came time to catch his train home he was just about worn out. The train soon filled up with commuters and others who had spent the day in London, all returning home. It was just gone 7-00pm and it was a later train than he originally wanted to catch, but he had enjoyed himself and very soon he dozed off, as did a few of the other people sitting near him. Suddenly the peace in the carriage was shattered by a lady on her mobile phone, she was making call after call and speaking in a voice so loud that, apart from the fact she woke everyone up from their slumbers, she really didn’t need a phone as the people she was speaking to probably would have heard her anyway. Each time she finished one call she immediately dialled someone else and carried on talking in a very loud voice. Very soon everyone sitting around got fed up with her constant chatter and nobody could get back to having a snooze, they were all looking at each other and sighing. Then she dialled another number “Hello Darling, it’s Susan, yes I know I’m late, but I’ve been very busy all day, I’ve had meeting after meeting – No I haven’t been for a drink with the new man in the office — No Darling you’re the only one in my life—No I’m not at his flat, I’m on a train with a couple of doddering old men and a few office workers — Of course I’m sure, cross my heart, in fact one of them looks ready for the Knackers' yard” She glanced at Grandad as she said this last bit. “I’ll be home very soon, so stop moaning on, love you, see you soon, Bye”. With that she immediately dialled another number and started talking to someone else “Yes, Carol, I know you’ve had a long day, but you are my secretary and I pay you to do what I tell you to do, as soon as I get in to Ramsgate I’ll bring all the paperwork round to your house and you will have to make sure that it is ready for first thing in the morning, I don’t care if it is your Daughters birthday today, you will do as you’re told”, with that she ended the call and rang another number, the she started talking very loudly again “Hello Darling, it’s Susan again, I’m afraid I’m going to be later than I thought, I have to take some important paperwork round to my secretary’s house”. Just then the train was starting to pull into Margate station, as Grandad got up to leave he heard the woman that had been annoying everyone, still on the phone to her husband “No Darling, I am not with anyone, I’ve told you I’m on a train with some old geezers” The woman was sitting, stretched out, with her feet on the seat opposite, blocking the door where Grandad was trying to get off, she looked up at him and gave him a dirty look as she reluctantly took her feet off the seat and she was still talking to her husband, so Grandad leaned over close to the phone and said in a very loud voice “ Susan Darling, turn that phone off and come back to bed” Explain that one thought Grandad as he alighted from the train. It was one of the bloodiest and most important battles fought on British soil and heralded the beginning of the Norman Conquest. The Battle of Hastings was fought to win/keep the English throne. Harold, the King of England tried his best to keep hold of the throne. His opposition was William of Normandy, leader of the Normans. The two armies met near Hastings. William’s armies defeated Harold and the rest is history.

Ramsgate Old Motor & Motorcycle Club We are the oldest established Classic Car Club in Thanet, were established by a small group of enthusiasts back in 1979 and the club continues to be successful to this day. We ‘drive’ and continue to organise many local rallies such as the Great Bucket and Spade Run and the Cliftonville Classic to name but two, which are attended by many members and other clubs, for example our friends at The Invicta Land Rover Club to name but one. We are not content just to turn up to rallies though of course we do this, but are prepared to organise them as well and like to support local charities and good causes. Our club also carries the all important Public Liability Insurance necessary for any public gathering. We offer a truly excellent club and social scene and our modest annual membership charge is soon outweighed by buffets, often free to members, and discounted trips to places of interest. Our cars vary from exotica such as E Types and Mark two Jaguars, Alvis, Rolls Royces to Mini’s Morris’ and Austins. Cars are welcome from rolling restorations to Concours. We have excellent technical back up for members, marque experts and a wide network of trade suppliers and MOT stations We recently showed twenty three cars in support of RNLI at Margate and showed fifteen cars at The Challock Goose Fair with two of our cars taking first and second prizes in the show. If you would like more information, see our website on www.rommcc.org.uk where you can download an application form, or contact the club on 07779422780

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY A vital document enabling a person to appoint another they trust to manage their affairs when they are unable to act for themselves due to the loss of mental capacity through illness, accident, dementia or stroke for example. Without this document your spouse, relatives or friends cannot legally act on your behalf. They must apply to the Court of Protection, also known as the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) who investigates the background of the person applying to decide if they are ‘fit’ to be appointed ‘receiver’. To apply to be a ‘receiver’ your family member or friend must complete 50 pages of forms giving huge amounts of personal information about themselves, their family, their own personal finances and their relationship with you, the person they wish to care for. If they are appointed as a receiver, the OPG charges numerous fees to supervise their activities; commencement fees, an account fee, transaction fees, accountants fees and finally a winding up fee which can all add up to thousands of pounds over the years. The OPG takes control of your finances and the receiver has to continuously obtain authorisation from them to pay certain expenses on your behalf. Additional authorisation means additional fees. Everybody should have a Lasting Power of Attorney to save their family expense, grief and aggravation at a time they need it least.

Jaci Godman Irvine specialises in Wills, Trusts and Lasting Powers of Attorney. She is also the advisor in the South East for Universal Asset Protection Ltd.
