Hello everybody and a warm welcome to our 61st edition of the MARGATE HANDBOOK. Well what a big clanger we dropped last month, we allowed Grandad to do the Sudoku, the Crossword and the Spot the Ad competition. He made a complete mess of things, in fact the only one he got right was the Sudoku. For the Crossword he put in the Grid for one Crossword and the clues for a different Crossword, so it was impossible to do the puzzle. Then on the Spot the Ad competition he put a telephone number in that no longer existed, so all in all he caused chaos, still that’s Grandad for you,. Thank you to the dozens of you who contacted us and let us know about it, we passed all your messages on to Grandad and he sends his sincerest apologies and has told us to give out 2 prizes for this months competition. He is now BANNED from interfering in both the Crossword and the Spot the Ad, but because he injured himself in the Garden and we felt sorry for him we have allowed him to do the Sudoku. (See Grandad on Page 22). Coming up in our March & April issues we will be having a Special Centre Page Feature on the shops and businesses in Northdown Road and the Cliftonville area where there are a huge number of both long established and new businesses to be found. We love to hear from you each month and as always our contact details are: Web: E-mail: Tel: 01843 571145 68 Clarence Avenue Cliftonville Margate CT9 3DR

Valentine’s Day Every February we celebrate Valentine's Day by giving flowers, chocolates and cards to those we love. We do this in honour of Saint Valentine. You may be wondering, "Who is St. Valentine"? Time to brush up on your Valentine's history! Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. There was an Emperor at that time by the name of Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married. With this thought in mind he outlawed marriage for young men in hopes of building a stronger military base. Supposedly, Valentine, decided this decree just wasn't fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine's actions he had him put to death. Another legend has it that Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailor's daughter. Before he was put to death he sent the first 'valentine' himself when he wrote her a letter and signed it 'Your Valentine', words still used on cards today. Perhaps we'll never know the true identity and story behind the man named St. Valentine, but this much is for sure...February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating clear back to the Middle Ages.

DO YOU KNOW THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS? What happens if you are no longer capable of handling your own affairs? If you do not have the mental capacity to look after your own affairs and you do not have the appropriate Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) to cover this eventuality, the Court of Protection will appoint a Deputy to manage your affairs for you. This person could be a family member, however, the whole process is time consuming and expensive and the family will never be free from the court’s authority. There will be significant legal fees in setting up this procedure plus additional supervision and annual fees to administer the order. Within the first three years alone, this could amount to more than five thousand pounds. Furthermore, with time delays in preparing and establishing the Deputy Court Order, your needs and requirements cannot be guaranteed to be met at the time when you need it most. Simple tasks such as paying bills, sorting out pensions, claiming benefits, and tax affairs will be put on hold. Bank and Building Society accounts will become dormant. The British Bankers Association have confirmed ‘Joint Bank Accounts’ will be frozen if one of the account holders lacks mental capacity and has not registered a Lasting Power of Attorney. It will not be possible for you to complete property transactions, (including property which is jointly owned). The consequences of not having a Power of Attorney could be devastating. With regard to business owners or directors this could be catastrophic. This situation could happen to anyone at any time in a person’s life. There are all sorts of reasons why people lose mental capacity. It is naive to consider this will not happen to you. We simply do not know. The NHS estimate over 2,000.000 people lack mental capacity. This includes brain injuries, mental health difficulties, dementia etc. The Court of Protection advises that all adults should prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney at the age of approximately 35 years.

Jaci Godman Irvine specialises in Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney & Probate. She will visit you in the privacy of your own home, all fees are fixed.

Hints and Tips

A great way of preventing identity theft is to invest in a shredder. Then stack your junk mail close by. Every time you shred a confidential document, sandwich it between a couple of items of junk mail. If you line your shredder hopper with a plastic shopping bag, every time you empty the hopper add some household waste - such as used tea bags etc., to the top of the bag. No one will find anything that they can use in your dustbin. If you don’t have a shredder for your bank statements etc., soak them in water overnight. Squeeze them out, and the printing will be completely illegible!

Mick’s Monthly Memo’s In fond memory of the late Mick Twyman

The Bridges over Newgate Gap.. For many years one of our ‘leading’ historians told everybody that Newgate Gap was originally spanned by a wooden bridge, erected by wealthy local Victorian resident Captain Hodges. Well, no it wasn’t! Yes Captain Hodges did construct a bridge over this yawning 60 feet deep chasm, known locally as the Devil’s Gap, yet despite its rustic appearance when seen from a distance it was built of iron, and most definitely not timber. Let’s take a look at what the Kentish Gazette had to say about this bridge in it’s issue of the 22nd of April, 1856:- “A new iron bridge is in course of construction to connect the Freehold Land Society’s property with the opposite side of the gateway leading down to the sea. It will be an iron footbridge of 42 feet span at an elevation of nearly 60 feet, and will be a great ornament to that part of the town. We regret that so little progress is made in building on the estate, the sea views from this place are almost unequalled on this part of the coast.” The bridge’s funder, Captain Hodges, was as eccentric as they came, and flitted from one hare-brained scheme to another. And he could afford to, as being heir to a London Gin distillery made him extremely wealthy. As a result his new bridge was constructed piecemeal, and it was not until 1861 that it was finally finished and opened to the public. There is a very nice watercolour in the local collection at Margate Library, showing the completed bridge with a large banner draped over the balustrade rail on the landward side, this bearing the logo ‘Pro Bono Publico’. The reason for the largesse of Hodges was not entirely as philanthropic as his banner might suggest, but was for the purpose of getting cliff top promenader's out to his Flagstaff and cannons at Palm Bay, where there was money to be made from the sale of refreshments. But There was a second gapway to bar access before the Flagstaff was reached. Then known as Jesus Gap, this name was a relic from the days when Jesus Hospital had owned The farmland. Over this gap Hodges did indeed throw a wooden bridge, and that is why the gapway still bears his name today. This bridge was replaced by an iron one in 1907. By 1880 the iron bridge over Newgate was showing the effects of it’s protracted construction just a couple of decades previously, when the salt-laden air had got to it’s unprotected ironwork, and the subsequent neglect by Hodges. Despite it still being in his hands, the Borough Surveyor recommended the expenditure of £65 of public money to replace rotten timber decking and strip down and paint the very rusty ironwork with lead oxide paint. In 1907 a decision was made to replace this with a new bridge to mark Margate's 50 years as a Borough. The new bridge was of steel girders cased in breeze concrete, faced with decorative Doulton tiles, but 80 years water penetration caused expanding rust to slowly blow the bridge deck apart. When pieces began falling into the gap a net was fixed below to catch them, but the worsening situation eventually brought about the decision to close it to the public. For far to long nothing was done, and it remained fenced off until the Council belatedly decided a few years ago to erect the replacement of today. It is a sad fact that despite . promises to save the decorative features of the old bridge, many perished at the hands of vandals, sadly always with us.

Build Your Own Compost Bin Start by making the bin. You will need 16 or more slats (200mm x 20m is ideal), four stakes and four batons. Ideally this would be second hand treated timber that your neighbour is about to take to the local tip. If you have to improvise with an old gate or discarded bedstead so much the better. If it all seems too daunting you could buy a compost bin but they really are not difficult to make. Arrange the slats for the two sides on the ground. Nail a stake to each end of each side to make two panels. Add a pair of parallel batons to each panel to guide the front slats. Ask a friend to hold up the two sides while you nail on the back slats. If the sides are not very substantial, you may need to prevent the front stakes from leaning outwards by knocking a supporting stake into the ground. You can now start making your compost. Add organic ingredients as and when you have them (vegetable peelings, courgette plants, grass cuttings, guinea pig bedding etc). Do not add any meat or anything too woody If it is very dry, add a bucket of water If most of what you compost is kitchen waste, mix it with egg boxes, kitchen paper or loo rolls. And that’s all there is to it. After 6 months the bottom two thirds should be wonderful rich compost. Spread the compost on your flower beds and vegetables and use the top third to start your next compost heap.

When Grandad, was working in the garden, he cut his hand rather badly and went up to the A&E department at the hospital. When he got there, after having checked in, he found the waiting room full to bursting so he knew he would have a long wait. After a while he found himself a seat and sat patiently just watching what was going on around him. A young doctor came out of one of the swing doors and walked up to the check in counter and asked the young receptionist a few questions about a patient that had been checked in earlier. To keep the patients details confidential the Doctor was speaking very quietly to the girl, so she kept asking him to repeat what he said. Grandad overheard him repeat one of the questions two or three times and then he heard the doctor say in a loud voice, “where did he say he was BLEEDING from”? “BROADSTAIRS” said the young receptionist. Well Grandad almost fell out of his seat as the young Doctor explained that he meant where did the patient say he was losing blood from. Some half an hour later there was a right commotion going on where an elderly lady was surrounded by three or four members of her family and a young Doctor in a white coat. The dear old lady was in tears and her family were all remonstrating with the Doctor. The noise got louder and louder, when all of a sudden a very well dressed lady in a business suit arrived on the scene and introduced herself as a hospital manager and demanded to know what was going on. A middle aged man spoke up and said he was the son of the distressed lady and wanted to know how on earth the Doctor standing next to him was allowed to deal with patients. “What do you mean”? asked the lady manager. “Well, my mother has had a very bad bout of hiccups for over a day so we brought her along to see someone here at the hospital to see what can be done about it, she was called in by a nurse then about 2 minutes later she came bursting back through crying her eyes out and it took us over 10 minutes to get her to speak to us” said the lady’s son. “Then what she told us was absolutely unbelievable. “What was said” asked the well dressed lady. “He told her that she was pregnant with twins” said the lady’s son. At this you could have heard a pin drop and all eyes turned to the young doctor. The young doctor spoke to the elderly lady and asked her “Have you still got hiccups”? “No” she replied “they’ve gone completely. As the Chinese use the Lunar calendar for their festivals the date of Chinese New Year changes from year to year. The date corresponds to the new moon (black moon) in either late January or February. Traditionally celebrations last for fifteen days, ending on the date of the full moon. In China the public holiday lasts for three days and this is the biggest celebration of the year. The Chinese calendar is different from that used in the United Kingdom. It is made up of a cycle of twelve years, each of them being named after an animal. This is very like our signs of the zodiac. Some people believe that people born in a particular year such as the year of the Dog will have some of the characteristics of that animal.

DATE WITH DANA………………COMING TO SAY GOODBYE TO NIGEL?........ We who listen to The Archers on that wireless box every early evening are in a state of shock. We have just lost a very long-term and familiar friend, namely Nigel Pargeter. Married to Elizabeth, youngest daughter of the Archer clan, these two were the posh peas-in-a-pod running the Pargeter estate, a fine old country house set in its own grounds and now turned into a thriving Conference Centre. Of course we heard the furore about listening to the New Year’s episode to celebrate 60 Years of Archers’ broadcasts, since we were alerted something special would happen. Obediently, we heard the happy news of the arrival of Helen’s awaited baby, and then - then we heard Nigel’s bloodcurdling scream as he fell off the roof. What an awful accident - he would need recuperation, and all would be taut and tense and….and then the grim truth hit us. The fall had been fatal. There would be no more Nigel. Not now. Not ever. Never. The Buddhists have a certain saying: ‘Everything you need to know will be revealed to you.’ So it was by sheer chance that we tuned in to Graham Seed, the actor who has portrayed Nigel for THIRTY YEARS. No, he had not wanted to leave, but yes, he had just been called into the office and told he had to go. Cheerfully he commented, “Well, I’m a free-lance actor, and I have a play I’m going directly into……” and yet we wonder at such good nature after such a wrench. Could this be a front? We will never know. Asked to give a rendition of “the scream” Graham Seed refused. “No,” he said, “but I will say something: Lizzie, I will miss you.” Not half as much as we who assumed you were a fixture. Not half as much as me and millions more will sorely miss you, Nigel.

What Seeds to sow in February If, like me, you can’t wait to get back to gardening, or if you want an early crop of vegetables, then there are a number of vegetable seeds which can be sown in February. Some of these can be sown straight in the ground, such as Broad Beans, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Calabrese, Brussel Sprouts, Carrots, Leeks, Radish, Beetroot and Lettuce. Some need gentle heat in a propagator or Greenhouse, Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers (Capsicums) Aubergine, Cucumber and sprouting seeds among them.
