Mick’s Monthly Memo In fond memory of the late Mick Twyman THE RUNAWAY TRAM CAME DOWN THE HILL ( Part Two )

Following the spectacular crash of No 2 in April,1901, critics had been quick to attack the tram network, one particularly barbed comment claiming that its drivers were not fit to drive wheelbarrows, let alone trams! And there was some element of truth in that remark because many of the drivers had been Irish navvies constructing the network, and they were now piloting these juggernauts around the island! On the 9th of August, at 7.30pm in streets still crowded with shoppers on a fine summer’s evening, there occurred Margate’s worst accident. Again a tram ran away down Fort Road, only this time packed full of passengers, both inside and on the open top deck. With sparks flying from it’s brakelocked wheels and the screams of terrified passengers echoing through the air, No 8 tore down the hill, pedestrians scrambling out of its way. At the bottom it made the inevitable leap from rails on the tight bend, turning sideways onto the buildings as it did so and toppling over to finish leaning at a crazy angle against Eveling’s Drapers Store, which was packed with customers. Passengers on the top deck were thrown off into the road, and people in the shop cut by flying glass. A total of 28 people were injured, most of whom had amazingly only suffered cuts and bruises, but there were a couple who had severe injures, including broken bones and internal damage. Help was soon at hand from the Police Station and Margate Ambulance Corps, whose headquarters was in Fort Road just a few yards away. Those not too seriously injured were sent home by cab after first-aid treatment, and two serious casualties were taken to Margate Cottage Hospital. A large milling crowd had gathered, giving the Police a hard time in keeping things under control. CAR 38 ARRIVED FROM THE Depot with a gang to recover No 8 and shore up the facade of the damaged building once it had been removed. Car 38 was chained to No 8 and things readied for the operation, all of this to a stream of sarcastic remarks from the voluble crowd. At 9.30pm. Things were all set with some of the constables helping to take the strain on the chains ready for the pull, and then around the corner at the top of the hill came Car50, sent to help. But it too ran out of control down the steep gradient to smash into the back of No 38, knocking it clean off the rails, panicking and scattering people in the process. Several more were injured including two policemen. The newly injured having been given first aid, the job started again.Car50 was shackled to No.8 and gingerly pulled upright. Back on the rails, it was found that No.8stillworked, and to loud cheers from the crowd swollen by drunks from the pubs it was driven away at 10.20pm. To much heckling work got underway to get No. 38 back onto the track and, after a long struggle, it was finally chained to car 50 for the tow back to the Depot. By now a light drizzle was falling, and this added to the problems as it had been decided to travel back up the steep incline in Fort Road to avoid that sharp bend. To the delight of the jeering crowd nothing happened in way of movement, just a lot of wheel-spinning and sparks due to the loss of traction from the wet rail. Sanding produced the desired result and off the trams went slowly up the hill still sparking furiously, the jeering and cheering crowd following closely. However, after 25 yards the chains parted, and No.38 rolled back to scatter the now not so brave crowd. Hooked up again, the two trams finally left the scene of devastation to a final cheer. An evening to remember! To Advertise in The Margate Handbook please Phone 01843 571145

Keep patio containers well watered and feed with a liquid fertiliser every fortnight.

Cyclamen are starting to set seed now, so increase your stock by sowing the fresh seed in gritty compost (one part grit to one part potting compost) and leave in open cold frames.

In hot weather, raise your lawnmower blades as longer grass is more tolerant of dry conditions. Remove rampant bulrushes or irises from your pond before they go to seed and make the problem worse. Regularly mist plants in greenhouses, polytunnels and conservatories to prevent red spider

Grandad hears of a Policeman with a sense of humour. Grandad was sitting in Barry the Barbers when he heard a tale from one of the other customers sitting there. It appears that the Gentleman concerned had been lucky and won a few thousand on the lottery, so he decided to treat himself and buy a new sports car. He went to a main dealers and bought a top of the range Mercedes Sports car. The following Friday he got a phone call to let him know that everything had been sorted and his car was ready for collection. He went along and after completing all the paperwork decided to take this new gleaming beauty out for a spin right away. He had the top down as he raced all through the countryside, it felt fantastic as he increased his speed and when he reached a stretch of dual carriageway he decided to really put his foot down, and off he shot. He had been travelling for about 10 minutes when all of a sudden he looked into his rear view mirror and saw the blue flashing lights of a Police car. He quickly eased off the speed and indicated that he was pulling over. As he pulled into a lay-by the Police car pulled up behind him. Asergeant got out of the car and walked up to him with his notebook in hand and said “It’s Friday, it’s about 45 minutes before I finish my shift for the day and I could really do without all the hassle of the paperwork, so if you can give me one good reason why I shouldn’t book you for speeding then you can go on your way”. The man quickly replied “Well about 15 years ago my wife, who is now my ex-wife, ran off with a Policeman and for the last few minutes I thought that you were trying to bring her back to me”. The police sergeant burst out laughing and turned to the man and said “Off you go Sir and drive carefully”

HINTS & TIPS FOR THE GARDEN Stop cats using your flower beds as a toilet - spray tea bags (either new or used) with Ralgex (Deep Heat). Bury the teabags just below the surface of the soil - when the cat disturbs them they will give off the scent of the spray - which cats can not stand. In time the tea bags will break down and nourish the soil. Please mention The Margate Handbook when responding to adverts

LONG TERM CARE FEES “PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS” Case Study 1 Mrs. J had heard that if she required care in the future her home could be sold to fund it. Knowing she and her late husband had worked hard all their lives to own their own home, Mrs. J felt very strongly that it should pass to her children and should not be sold to fund her care. Solution Mrs. J set up an Asset Protection Trust to ring fence her most valuable possession in trust for her children. The trust arrangement allowed Mrs. J to continue living in the property, to sell and purchase a new property & if necessary release equity. There are many benefits to the Asset Protection Trust, including the avoidance of the need to obtain a grant of probate, & shielding the property from the threat of being sold to fund long term care in the future. Mrs. J latterly entered long term care some years later; since the house was put into trust at the correct time the house was exempt from care costs. Case Study 2 Mr. & Mrs. P were in their nineties and were becoming increasingly concerned about what would happen should their health fail and they were to require long term care. Solution Mr. & Mrs. P established Protective Property Trusts within their Wills. Mr. P unfortunately passed away soon after leaving his share of the house in trust for their children, but the trust arrangement allowed Mrs. P a full lifetime interest in the property meaning she could sell it & purchase another. When Mrs. P latterly required care, the half of the house in trust could not be used to fund it. It was therefore protected & eventually passed to the children.

Lessons 1. If assets are put into Trust at the correct time they will be protected 2. Never assume it’s too late to plan & protect 3. There are different methods of protecting your assets depending on your personal situation 4. It pays to get advice from the right people, it can cost you dear if you don’t You may or may not perceive yourself to be wealthy, but if your total estate is valued at more than £23,250 (in England) you will be required to fund your own long term care if you require it in the future. Careful planning can help you protect what you have worked hard for, but it is important you act as early as possible…….. but never assume it is too late.

Jaci Godman Irvine specialises in Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney & Probate. She will visit you in the privacy of your own home, all fees are fixed.

Margate, January 2nd 1804

The arbitrators met on Thursday last in London and awarded the crew of the Margate boats consisting of 31 men, the sum of 4,000 Guineas and £300 as compensation for the loss of the Lord Nelson Lugsail boat. The award is at once liberal and just. The ship was in all probability saved by the exertions of these brave men. When the first boat came near the Auspicious the waves were running so high that they were under the necessity of casting the anchor nearly 20 yards astern of her - A Bouy was thrown from the ship which reached the boat, a rope was thus conveyed to the ship, the other end of this rope, one of the boats crew Mr J Hubbard, fastened round his body and then leaped overboard. He was soon got up by the side of the ship and fortunately, without any injury. This was the first step towards saving the ship and if ever fearless, intrepidity deserved high recompense, it surely did in this case and the generosity of the Arbitrators must be applauded. many instances have occurred when as much exertion has been made as much courage displayed and the hardy fellows have not been paid more then a tithe of this sum:-

January 15th 1808 On Wednesday morning, Mrs Temple, of Sandwich being on a visit to a friends house at Dane Hill Margate and having at different times laboured under mental derangement, unobserved by the people of the house, left her apartment and leaped into the well, near 80 feet deep. Assistance being immediately procured, Mr Bourne, of that place, descended and having brought her near to the top of the well the rope broke and both were precipitated to the bottom! But a fresh rope was procured and they were both safely drawn out and fortunately neither of them were essentially hurt. By Alf “LEGS” Beeching (Margate History Society)

Colour Yellow / Green

If fire appears to leap from the vibrant green surface of the Peridot, this may be because this gem is formed as a result of volcanic activity. Many years ago, natives discovered Peridot crystals in the black sands of Hawaii, explaining their presence as tears shed by Pele, the volcano goddess. Throughout history, August's birthstone has been used as a means to connect with nature.
