Hi Everybody and welcome to the 43rd edition of the HANDBOOK. As we have again increased our distribution area, a special welcome to those of you who are seeing it for the first time. Once again thank you for the e-mails and phone calls, they are all appreciated. Well last months competition broke all records as we had a record 136 entries, obviously many of you are keen to try Scuba Diving, as that was the prize. Following on from last month we again had contact e-mails from abroad, one from Japan, one from Brazil and 3 from Margate Florida, where incidentally Grandad got a mention on a local Radio Station. Obviously all of these are reading the HANDBOOK on-line. That’s it for this month, as always should you wish to contact us our details are: Web: www.margatehandbook.co.uk E-mail: info@margatehandbook.co.uk Tel: 01843 571145 68 Clarence Avenue Cliftonville Margate CT9 3DR

Bramley Apple and Pear Chutney 2009 is the bicentenary of the Bramley Apple. In 1809 the first Bramley Apple tree grew from pips planted in a garden in Nottinghamshire. In 1846 a local butcher called Matthew Bramley bought the garden. To celebrate 200 years of this wonderful cooking apple why not make some chutney? The more vinegar you add the more acidic the chutney, remember you can always add but not takeaway!

Method

1. Sterilise some jam jars by washing in hot soapy water, rinsing and then drying in a warm oven, 130ÂşC, 120ÂşC fan oven, gas mark 1 for 10-15 minutes. 2. Put the apples, pears, onions, garlic, lime zest and juice, mustard seeds and half the vinegar into a large pan. 3. Bring to the boil and simmer gently until the fruit is Ingredients nearly cooked. 1kg/2.2lb Bramley Apples, peeled, cored and 4. At this point, taste the chutney before adding a chopped little more vinegar to your taste with the rest of the 1kg/2.2lb Conference Pears, peeled, cored and ingredients, then bring back to the boil and simmer chopped for approximately 30 minutes or until thick and pulpy. 2 large onions, peeled and finely chopped 5. Allow to cool for 30 minutes and then pack into 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed the jam jars, covering with a wax disc and a screw 2 limes, grated zest and juice top lid. 1 tablespoon mustard seeds 6. Store in a cool dark place allowing 3-4 weeks for Approximately 1litre/2 pints white wine vinegar the flavours to mature. 225g/8oz each of dried apricots and peaches, Delicious in sandwiches chopped a piece of root ginger as big as your thumb, or with pork pie, peeled and grated cheeses, cold meats 2 teaspoons ground ginger salt to taste and patĂŞ.

1kg/2.2kg dark Muscovado sugar

In The Garden To Water Or Not To Water Water is a precious commodity but without it, our gardens would be in a sorry state. If you have a water meter or a hosepipe ban, here are a few tips on the best ways to irrigate your garden while protecting the water reserves. All plants need water, but fruit, vegetables, containers and new plants have the greatest need. Watering your garden must be done correctly to prevent wastage and to keep your plants alive. Established plants shouldn't need watering, especially if they are native to your area. Newly planted areas, however, do need to be kept damp, but this can be avoided if you plant only in early spring or autumn, giving the new plants time to build a strong root system before summer arrives. Fruit and vegetables will usually produce a crop of sorts without extra watering but obviously the yield will be bigger and healthier if you do drench them regularly. Howeve'r, if it's the leaves that are to be harvested, the plant shouldn't be allowed to dry out. If there's a drought, you should be able to get away with just one good soaking two weeks before harvest time. The knack of conserving water while keeping your garden healthy is a combination of factors that can be summarised in two parts: reduce water loss from your garden and make the most of the water you have. Keep weeding! Weeds take precious moisture away from your plants, and this includes your lawn. And while on the subject of lawns, it's recommended that you do not water your lawn at all as they require a huge, regular soaking to be effective. Grass will turn brown in particularly dry times, but will soon recover once rain comes. Efficient and effective watering is most important for plant growth during the summer. Early morning or evening is best as there is less evaporation. If you have to use a hose, choose a good quality rubber one with a trigger and rose attachment. The trigger will allow you to control

the water flow while the rose will provide the small droplets necessary to penetrate the earth more effectively without breaking up the surface crust which helps retain moisture. Endeavour to apply water just to the base of the stem of specific plants, leaving the rest of the soil dry. This will limit weed growth and ensures the water reaches precisely where it's most needed. Never just sprinkle everything with water as this will encourage roots to grow near the surface where they will be prone to severe damage if drought hits. It's better to water less regularly and more thoroughly, giving each plant a proper soaking so the water reaches right down to the roots. 'Ponding' or 'puddling' is an effective way of keeping the water in the area for which it's intended. This just means building a little earth wall around the base of the plant which works as a dam, preventing the water running across the surface of the soil. Collecting and recycling water is very important now. Water butts are easier to access if you mount them on a platform of bricks so you can fit a bucket or watering can under the tap. You can buy kits to link several butts together so rain is diverted when one container is full. Another trick is to recycle 'grey-water', which is water that has been used for washing. Soap and detergent is harmless to plants but don't use it if bleach or disinfectant has been added. If you have an aquarium, use the water from this as it also contains a cheap, natural fertiliser. Collecting grey-water is easy if you set up a special system and preferable to carrying buckets up and down stairs all the time. See www.reuk.co.uk/Greywater-Diverter-Valve.htm For further information If you have the space and the money, you can consider building a rain tank in your garden Take a look at the Rainwater Harvesting website for further details www.ukrha.org

THE SATURDAY MORNING TANNER RUSH

23

Grandad was with Hannah, one of his Granddaughters, when she was playing with a Yo-Yo. “Can you do this Grandad” asked Hannah. “I used to be able to” said Grandad. “In fact the first time that I ever saw one of these was at the TANNER RUSH”. “What’s the TANNER RUSH” asked Hannah. “Well it was magic, when I was a little lad hoards of us kids, all over the country, went to the pictures every Saturday morning and it cost sixpence to get in, that’s not 6 pence as you know it, but 6 old pennies which is only 2½ of today’s pennies. A Sixpence was known as a TANNER, so going to the “Flicks” became known as the TANNER RUSH. In fact most of us joined the club there. Ours was called the CHUMS CLUB, but they had different names for it in different towns. Some were known as the ABC MINORS club, and once a month they used to bring on an act or a TURN as they were called where I lived. Once we had this man who came on stage and did fantastic things with Yo-Yo’s. We all thought he was magic” “What else happened at the TANNER RUSH” asked Hannah. “Well, when you joined the club you had to fill in all your details, you know, Name, Address, Date Of Birth, then if it was your birthday that day, or that week, they called out your name and you went on stage and the manager gave you a present of a packet of sweets or something like that. The one time I was called on the stage, it was the same day that the Yo-Yo man was there and he gave me a Yo-Yo, I thought it was brilliant” “What sort of things did you see at the pictures” Hannah asked. “Oh, we had Flash Gordon, The Bowery Boys, The 3 Stooges and we always had a cowboy film that went on over 6 or 7 weeks then at the end of each episode the main character was just about to fall over a cliff or get run over by a train, so you had to come back next week to see if he made it or not, but he always did” said Grandad. “What did you like best” asked Hannah. “Well there were lots of things I liked, for instance nearly every week the projector would stop working and the screen became a blank screen or it just flickered, when this happened we all started stamping our feet and whistling and jeering, then two or three ladies came round flashing torches and telling us to shut up, but this never worked, so the manager, who always wore a DICKIE BOW, would come round with his torch, when this happened we all shut up, and at half-time the ladies came out with trays that had ice creams and lollies and Kiora drinks, then all of us kids would form huge queues at each of the ladies to get our treats. Right at the end of every morning show they would show a picture of the Queen riding her horse and play the National Anthem, this was when we all had to stand up and not move at all and to make sure we did, all the ladies and the Manager who worked there would stand at the exits to stop us getting out and make us stand rigid until the National Anthem was over. We all tried to get out of the doors before they arrived on the scene and anyone who did get out was treated like a hero by the rest of us. But the ones who became the biggest hero’s and were the envy of all of us were the two or three lads who got in first then ran down to one of the fire exits and opened them, which allowed dozens of the rest of us to sneak in. Sometimes we got caught, but the times we did get in meant that we had an extra TANNER to spend on ice creams and lollies which we then shared with the boys who had opened the door for us. That was how we spent our Saturday mornings. It wasn’t just the films or the cartoons it was the whole thing of going there that made Saturday mornings really special. Right, where’s this Yo-Yo, let’s see if I can still do it” Please mention The Margate Handbook when responding to adverts

HOOPER’S HORIZONTAL MILL, BY MICK TWYMAN. An imposing feature of the Margate skyline for many years was Captain Stephen Hooper’s Horizontal Mill, which stood near to today's Zion Place in what is now Aldi’s car park. Despite its frame, little correct information has been published regarding it over the years due to slack research, but that is now rectified by my colleague Alf Beeching and myself, so here goes. As will be seen from the illustration, the name of Horizontal Mill seems more than a little incongruous for such a towering structure which reared to a height of sixty feet, but the word was actually a descriptive of the manner in which the motive power of the wind was harnessed to drive the grinding stones. It was in 1770 that Captain Hooper, a retired mariner, registered the patent for his new form of mill. Unlike conventional windmills where vertical external sails turned to drive the works, this consisted of a wooden tower that had louvered sides which could be opened partially in sections to allow the prevailing wind to pass through the structure, turning as it did an internal horizontally mounted wheel to which was fixed vertical slats. The central iron shaft to which the wheel was fixed thus rotate the grinding stone on the milling floor at ground level without any of the differential gearing required for the conventional mill. His first milling effort with one of these constructions was at Battersea, and in 1780 he erected the Margate example. What Hooper did here was to superimpose a second driving wheel above the single one found at Battersea in an extended tower which, with its great height and diameter of 16 feet, soared above the adjacent buildings. This modification for Margate was based on his experience at Battersea, where, considering the surroundings the winds were probably often of a less than vigorous nature, would seem highly likely, but given the chosen building spot on the eminence of the open rolling down land which the Zion Place site still was in 1780, it would seem that Captain Hooper seriously underestimated the potential power of the winds prevailing here during our regular and ferocious winter storms, as we shall shortly see! The extended mill as built in 1780was designed to work five pairs of grinding stones simultaneously, so the power of the extra driving wheel was very necessary as the torque required would have been very substantial. All seems to have gone well for Captain Hooper and his most unusual mill until the winter of 1800, when one of those terrific storms came along. During this severe north westerly gale the whole of the top section containing the second driving wheel and all of its component machinery (and reckoned to have weighed around 5 tons) blew off the top of the tower, it then passed right over the then adjacent Prospect Hotel (still sadly missed by vintage Margatonians) to gently come to rest undamaged in the open space of Hanover Place. This errant portion of the mill was never replaced, and with a new roof fitted to the then seriously truncated tower it worked the rest of its life with just the single driving wheel of the original design as built at Battersea. In October, 1801 Captain Hooper sold the mill to John and John Webb Pilcher, and in 1804they conveyed it to Edward Pilcher. He owned it until the 12th of April,1816 when it was sold to Francis and William Codd, they being of the local banking firm and who had obviously acquired the structure with a view to developing some of the surrounding which went with the freehold. The horizontal mill itself appears to have been rented and worked by Kingsford, the Canterbury millers, until 1827 when its machinery was dismantled and taken down, leaving just the truncated empty shell of the structure. Although this was destroyed by a bomb during the Second World War, right up until the Zion Place clearance scheme of a half century age you could still see, at the southern end of Hanover Place and west of the old Prospect, the remains of the circular floor of the old mill.

Four of the hottest hair styles for this summer Curls There were many floaty, ethereal designs on the catwalks this year and to complement them designers left hair natural with tumbling curls or barely-there waves. It’s an easy to achieve look. Use a texturiser on straight hair and blow dry whilst scrunching or use a smoothing cream on curly hair and blow dry using a round brush. Tousle slightly when dry.

Glamour To complement the elegant evening wear visible on the catwalks this year were grown up, glamorous, gravity-defying hairstyles. These might need the help of a professional unless you are spectacularly talented and dextrous! A simpler version can be achieved by applying a volumiser and shine serum then blow drying before gathering hair up in a high ponytail and tonging in some curls.

Fringes Inspired by The Avengers and Twiggy the fringe is back, worn blunt and heavy to cover the forehead or asymmetric in a sassy crop. It’s fairly simple to achieve. Use a volumising spray on damp roots and blow dry using a large, round brush. Add volume by teasing the hair at the crown and use a pomade to tame fly-away bits.

Accessories Particularly flowers; small and large, fresh and fake, on clips, ties and bands, flower power was in evidence all over the catwalk. Designers have had their romantic heads on and pretty, flirtatious designs will be on the High Street this summer. Hair can be plaited or scooped into low, or high, ponytails but should always be adorned with something beautiful.

DATE WITH DANA ………...Coming to lunch in a ritzy restaurant? Long before your time of today, o young one, there were two mammoth stars of the silver screen. One was world- famous Elizabeth Taylor, who admits to 77, while the other was Hungarian - born Zsa Zsa Gabor, who admits to nothing. Some months ago these two movie icons were seen lunching together in a ritzy Hollywood restaurant - both alas! alas! in wheelchairs. Does this mean that even millions cannot buy eternal youth or eternal health? Seated at the next table was a group of wealthy Arab businessmen. In subdued discussion about the very real troubles in Gaza, and the overall state of the middle east. Gaza city seemed to hold special importance to them. Suddenly Zsa Zsa leaned forward and clutched Elizabeth's arm: “ you see, Dah-link” -she said in her inimitable accent : “They’re Still talking about me.” Yes ….we will have a piece of that slimming chocolate gateaux……..

Foreness Waterski Club We are a private member's club operating from Palm bay promenade between the water treatment site and Jetski world. Access is via the entrance opposite Palm Bay school. Membership is open to boat owners (whose boat is capable of towing a skier) and their families. Until February this year we had a clubhouse next to the slipway but this was destroyed by arson and is currently awaiting demolition and rebuilding. In the meantime we are using two 20 foot containers which whilst not ideal do at least mean we have a base this summer. The club has two tractors available for boat launching. Members can drive these themselves after familiarisation or choose to be launched by other members. Using a tractor ensures that boats can be launched and recovered at any stage of the tide without getting the family car soaked in sea water. We also have a toilet and boat washing facilities unharmed by the fire. The club runs various social events during the year together with trips out to the Margate sands, up the river Stour or to the wind farms. There is also a wealth of boating and water sport experience for newcomers to draw on if there is anything they are unsure of. The club has its own website so have a look www.waterskiclub.co.uk or contact Steve Royce our Chairman on 582951

BLANKET WEED IN PONDS At last we have found a Solution to Blanket Weed that really does work. As some of you know, we have tried many different methods of getting rid of the blessed stuff, not one of them ever worked. However this one did. What is it? Well it is a gadget called the XTERMINATOR XT7000. It does come in larger sizes which have different model numbers, but the XT700 is plenty big enough for most garden ponds. It is rather expensive ( We have found it advertised between £95.00 and £135.00) But it does do the trick. It gets rid of every bit of Blanket Weed. When we sat down and tried to tot up the money that we have spent over the years on different, so called solutions, none of which worked, then this gadget is cheap. If you are looking for one the do a Google search for “XTERMINATOR XT7000” and seek out the best price. I think we paid just over £105 including postage, but you may do better. Yes, as I said, it is expensive but it does work. So forget everything else that they try to sell you if you want to get rid of Blanket Weed, get one of these. It even comes with a Guarantee.
