Getting Started with Blackboard
Log into Blackboard at http://nuigalway.blackboard.com
For Instructors Blackboard is an ideal way to stay connected with today’s students – whether they’re around the world or just across the campus. This short guide aims to help academic staff get started with this virtual learning environment.
1. Logging in
Your user ID and password are the same as those you use
1. Logging In Your user ID and password are the same as those you use to access your email at NUI Galway. If you have difficulty logging in, follow online instructions on the login page. Call the ISS User Support Helpdesk on 091-495777 if you require more assistance.
The Blackboard My NUI Galway Page
1. Global Navigation Panel – provides access to the users profile and communication for the entire users’ course portfolio. 2. Number – displays the number of new items relevant to the entire users course portfolio, such as new posts, grade results etc. 3. Logout Icon –click here to logout of Blackboard. 4. My NUI Galway- the home page tab for Blackboard, click on this tab at any stage to return to this home page. 5. Courses – tab which lists all of your courses and the instructors on each course. 6. Personalise Page – enables you to change colour themes to Blackboard. 7. Settings - provides options to manage courses such as: hiding old courses from your home page and grouping courses by year.
8. My Courses –displays all the courses which you are enrolled in. 9. My Announcements –all your course and institution announcements are displayed here. 10. Add Widget – button to add optional “boxes” that include content, links or tools used to personalise your page.
The Global Navigation Panel
Click on the Personalise My Places link
Click on the drop down arrow beside your name. This menu opens up the Global navigation Panel which contains two menus: 1. 2.
The User menu The My Bb menu
Browse to your image and open the image.
3.1 The User menu
Click on the submit button to upload the image.
The User menu provides access to courses and settings as well as the home and help links. a)
Click on the courses menu to expand the courses. You can access each course home page from this menu.
b) Click on the settings menu to expand the settings. You can change your personal information from this menu.
To upload a personal avatar, click on the Personal Information link.
3.2 The My Bb Menu The My BB menu shows the course communication for your entire course portfolio. The number indicates how many new items are available. The person icon enables you to edit your profile, upload your picture

The Bb home icon expands the Bb home menu Posts Page- displays the latest posts in your courses; discussion boards, wikis blogs and journals. Updates Page-lists all notifications for every course that you are enrolled in. My Grades Page-only available to students shows status of grades from all courses The Retention Centre is an instructor only tool used to monitor student engagement. Alerts are displayed to highlight inactivity by students The Calendar tool shows events for all courses you are enrolled in. The People icon
Click on the Bb home icon to expand the Bb home menu
Click on any of the Posts icon for direct access to the Posts panel, you can alternatively navigate to the other pages within the My Bb menu. To return to the course menu click on the My NUI Galway tab.
Getting into Your Courses
Once you log in you will be in the My NUI Galway tab.
From your My Courses list, select one of the courses and you will be directed to the Home Page of the course
The Course Interface
The Course home page will provide an instructor with an Edit Mode On/Off toggle. Ensure the Edit Mode is turned on to make changes to the home page.
5.2 To Edit a Menu Item

Place the cursor on the Content menu item.
Enables you to add an additional Course Interface link to the menu Enables you to re-arrange the Course Menu items.
A drop down arrow will appear on the right
This symbol indicates the menu item is not available to students. This symbol indicates the menu item is available to students but there is no content in the area.
Click on the drop down arrow to see the edit options
Home Page is a course overview for students in your course, encompassing Announcements, Calendar items and Notifications.
You can rename the menu item, make the menu item not available or delete the menu item
5.3 To add a new Course Interface Link
Staff Details is a space to put your own profile, along with others involved in the course delivery.
Every course has a number of default menu items, as shown in section 4.1. To add a new menu item, for example a link for Assignments.
Course Information is a content area for module information.
Click on the
Select the Content Area link Learning Outcomes is an area for you to define what a learner should understand and be able to do after taking your module. Content is an area for you to upload student resources such as lecture notes, assignments and videos.
Enter the name â€œAssignmentsâ€? and select the check box Available to Users so that it will be displayed to the users. Click on the Submit button
Staff Notifications is like Home Page, but only relevant and visible to instructors. Feedback is a place for you to place student surveys, course feedback, etc. My Grades is a link for students to access their course grades.
The Assignment link is now added to the Course menu list. You can arrange where you want the Assignment link
Course Management/ Control Panel
to be displayed by using the arrows.
Control Panel: Students do not see the Control Panel on the bottom of the course menu on the left. This feature is for instructors only. It is the Control Panel that enables you to edit your Blackboard course site.
Adding Content to Your Course
Adding an Item (Quick Guide)
In the Build Content menu, choose Item.
Ensure Edit mode is on
Click on the Content link
• Build Content: Add content to your course. o Create: Upload PDFs, Word Docs, audio, video, etc. to your course. o New Page: Add folders and pages to better organise your course. o Mashups: Add Web 2.0 content, such as YouTube videos, Slideshare presentations and Flickr photos. • Assessments: Add tests, surveys and assignments (including Turnitin assignments) to your course. • Tools: Add tools such as Blogs, Journals, Wikis and Discussion Boards to your course. • Publisher Content: Assign a textbook (either required or recommended) for your course.
Type in a name
Attach a file by browsing and selecting the file. Click on the Browse My Computer button to open the file explorer window. Navigate to the file and select the file. Click on the Open button.
You can leave the default options settings alone unless you want to time release material or track how often students browse this content.
Select the Submit button and the material will be uploaded.
Make the Course Available to Students
By default, your course is not available to students.
Post an Announcement
On your course Home Page, in the My Announcements widget, click more announcementsâ€Ś
The Control panel menu provides the instructor with additional functionality which students do not have access to.
Click the Create Announcement button and enter the announcements details. Then click Submit. In the Control Panel Menu, expand the Customisation link. Click on the Properties link.
Within Properties, under Set Availabiltiy, choose Yes for Make Course Available and click Submit.
Now your students can access your Blackboard course. Other students who are not enrolled in your course cannot view your content.
Grouping Courses by Year
It can be useful to group the courses by year particularly if you are enrolled in a large number of courses. Click on the My NUI Galway tab to see all your courses and click on the settings icon in the My Courses menu.
Click on the Group by Term check box and the submit button.
Your courses should now be organised per year, you can expand or collapse each year as displayed below.
