INTRODUCTION Through my studies, both in academia and self teaching, I have been exposed to concepts surrounding the psychology of design, construction methods and feasibility, building sustainability and practice management. Architectural education has undoubtedly opened doors once shut in front of me. I wish to carry my education further into the context of architecture as a conduit for responsible social dialogue, sustainable design and spatial interaction.

260 King St. W The slender profile of the tower caught my attention as I moved through the gardens of Roy Thompson Hall on a frigid winters day.

Net Zero House

Project Statement The Net Zero House, located on a rural lot in the Town of Eugenia of Grey County Ontario, is a project approached through the perspective of building performance and sustainability. The building is designed specifically to be operated and maintained off grid without any municipal infrastructure intervention. The overall goal of the design was to accurately and scientifically illustrate the probable success of the design by achieving and EnerGuide score of 80 or more. In order to evaluate such metrics, building energy analysis software (Hot2000) was used. The building was able to achieve an EnerGuide rating of 91.

Luminence

Project Statement: Community Luminence is a proposal to introduce community participation, interaction, education, social spaces and a vision of a future to Toronto’s Little Portugal neighborhood, a place left bare of municipal interactive infrastructure. Toronto’s communities, west of the downtown core, are seeing a change in population demographics. Younger professional

Course: Instructor: Team: Medium: Date:

couples and small families are fronting this change. In response to this, architecture located on arterial roads must change from purely mercantile to mixed use and interactive spaces. Luminence embarks to redefine a library from a place of book keeping to a blanket of experiential “zonal” spaces. These requirements are kept flexible to respond to technological changes and innovation.

Lakeside Vibrato

Project Statement: Lakeside Vibrato takes the strength of the wind along the Toronto beach shoreline and converts its energy into music. The sound generated is able to be heard along the entire length of Toronto’s shoreline east of the DVP. Much like the Sirens of Greek Mythology, the sounds produced whistles and sings along with natures dynamic winter season. This interactive design both embraces and promotes the opportunity for social outdoor wintercollaboration. Course: Instructor: Team: Medium: Date:

Canopy Cover Due to the density of the trees, their leaves do not grow in the low to middle of the trunks. As a result, the ground is exposed to stippled, diffuse light allowing the building to maintain comfortable temperatures and reduced glare.

Whisper

Project Statement: Whisper is an installation that allows people to share their secrets via in-direct contact and communication. The design is inspired by the simple game of broken telephone where a short message is carried from person to person until a new message is received and passed along. The installation works as such, suspended units hanging from the ceiling enclose a speaker, a microphone, an ultra-sonic sensor and a processor. The suspended units are shaped in such a way as to increase the sound both emitted from the speaker and from the user into the microphone. The basic function of the design is to use distance as a means of user operation for recording an audio file and playing back an audio file. When an object appears within 10 - 15 centimeters of the sensor, the microphone begins recording a short message, no longer than 10 seconds. When a user is within 100 centimeters of the sensor, the speaker is activated and the latest recording on file is played. The complete installation is designed with modules in mind. The installation is fabricated using squares that have been subdivided into smaller 3 x 3 squares. Each 1/9th square is then divided into 4 quadrants where a hanging fixture is then placed.

The suspended fixtures vary in height. There are four major levels of fixtures. The longest fixtures (fixtures closest to the user) are equipped with the distance recognition playback and record hardware. These units are meant to hang just above the heads of the users, altering function between record and play determined by the height of the user.

Casa Delle Colonne

Project Statement: Casa Delle Colonne “House of Columns is an exploration of vertical structure to define habitable space through a mixeduse residential housing typology. Much like the collonades and arcades of antiquity, Casa Delle Colonne expresses the intimacy of outdoor space through a partial enclosure. Located in the Port Lands district of Toronto Ontario, Casa Delle Colonne is part of a vision to redefine the existing industry infrastructure into a vibrant new development bustling with life.

Furniture Design

Stool 2016 (build in progress)

300 dia x 1000 This bar stool design was developed by Samantha Turchyn and myself through a study of wood joinery. The method of fastening the three legs to the three layers of 20MM (3/4”) plywood is achieved through the use of a seated dovetail. These intersections use two sets of dovetails to ensure the leg remains fixed to the seat in both the z and y direction. In using a two stage dovetail, the user proceeds to squeeze the joint tighter while it is being used.

Bench 2015 (build in progress)

400 x 750 x 400 This bench design was a study of plywood and its inherent dimensional and structural properties. The curvature of the vertical sides is achieved by “curfing” the plywood. By cutting dados into the plywood and removing material until a thin veneer is remaining, the plywood becomes pliable and can be bent into shape. The axial strength is achieved by placing 20MM (3/4”) translucent acrylic panels inset within a dado on two sides of the bench.

Architect: ssg architecture inc. Role: Project Manager This project required a multi-faceted and multi-phased approach to the interior renovation of the sixth floor Athletic Facility at George Brown College. A primary requirement of the project was to maintain access to the space from both a student and faculty perspective. In order to meet this requirement, the project was designed to be phased through both a design and execution mindset. The design is fragmented throughout the facility producing many smaller renovations, but together, the renovations are orchestrated to produce a cohesive final product. My responsibilties include program blocking and review, presentation drawings, working drawings and materials and systems investigation.
