IMPELLER

DRONE

A Drone Without Propellers 2018 Impeller drone is a drone without propellers. It can be safer compared to traditional quadcopter drones because it has no exposed rotor blades. It uses impeller system to replace exposed rotor blades to create thrust. The aim of this project is to design a safer drone for users and public place.

For the last 4,5 years, the number of drone in the world increase dramatically, while accidents made by drone gradually increasing. The most common drone accident, which is people got cut and hurt by drone’s expose rotor blades. Hence, in order to solve this problem by innovation way, I design a drone without propellers.

DESIGN PROCESS Bladeless drone development was focused on how to produce thrust without exposed blades. Therefore, after my researched, I found three potential technologies could replace propellers on drone Dyson bladeless fan, Dyson bladeless fan, and Blower impeller. After my prototyping and testing. The result shows only blower impeller system can work for the drone. Because it has no exposed blades, can produce powerful thrust and lightweight. Hence, I started to focus on the different type of blower impeller system. After design and prototyping, I successfully completed vertical takeoff and landing testing. After this, I try different impellers and volute casing design, in order to increase thrust performance. Overall, I have made, six different impellers, four different volute casing, nozzles, impellers drone prototypes and failed almost 12 times, finally successfully to get the bladeless drone fly. In the end, I started to optimized drone’s body structure, and test by stress simulation, in order to create lightweight drone body.

IMPELLER SYSTEM How it works ? The impeller system sucks air in through the vents on the side of the drone and then accelerates it through a circular duct, creating an upward thrust as the air is pushed out through the bottom. there are eight different fan wheel in the impeller centrifugal fan industry, why I choose forward-curved fan impeller for this drone. There have three reasons: 1. It is 10% to 25% smaller than a backward-curved wheel, which means the motor efficiency can be better.
 2. Comparing to other types of impellers, forward curved impeller works
better when high pressures against lower volume flows are required.
 3. It has a lower noise level compared to other types of impellers. Overall, forward-curved has better motor efficiency and lower noise, so it's the best impeller for this drone.

VALIDATION There are three parts of my Validation in this project 1 - Impeller and thrust- I’ve built two structures to measure the thrust of impeller system, also in order to observed
results of the performance of each component. I recorded all the results by numbers and improve them. At
the end of the test, successfully get the bladeless drone to fly. 2 - Professionals - I have interviewed and met with engineers from the beginning of this project. I also took my
design process, test result and other prototypes to meet Dr. Sina Sareh and Dr. Mirko Kovac, who is the direc-
tor of the aerial robotic lab at imperial college. Both of them think this is a nice design and a creative way to solve the safety problem of drones, and if the
motor efficiency can be improved in the future, it has a great potential become a new type of drone. 3 - User testing and interview – I’ve inter- viewed 6 professional drone players, show them my design and
prototypes. However, their comments of this new type of drone are positive, they think “Although the speed
can’t compare with the racing drone, but it’s a good design for the safety issue, especially for normal users
 and immature drone players”

SUCCESS & FUTURE VALUE Success for this project shows bladeless drone has the ability to fly without rotor bladeless and create a safer drone environment. For bladeless drone users, they will not have to worry about it’s a dangerous product and hobbit. The application of drone in the future is dramatically increasing in many ways. The bladeless drone can create a safer user experience and public environment for society.

I think TV this object can be a piece of art, a symbol of taste, an interactive object, or even an item can change the atmosphere at home. From the perspective of the elements of art and boutique products to design it makes this TV stand not only a stand but also an elegant object that user can taste it and enjoy it. The target user of this stand is a group of people who are mature, fashion and care about their lifestyle and quality.

Life style

DESIGN CONCEPT In my design perspective, TV stand this object is not only can be a cold electronic product in our home, standing there in our living room and only offer one function, display. I think TV stand it should be an elegant and sexy object in our homes like a piece of art or a nice designed furniture

Therefore, the idea of this design is from the perspective of women's boutique. The color of this stand has a simple and generous matte black to set off the elegance of rose gold. The curve this stand is soft and elegant but sturdy, like a very stylish designer chair. The other design feature is the lags of the stand, it offers a space where users can place their stuff they want, like books, wine, potted plants or even a cat can rest on it. DYNAWEB A Safer Pilot Ladder 2018

DYNAWEB SAFER

PILOT

LADDER

DYNAWEB Dynaweb is a product of Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s Safety Grand Challenge in collaboration with the Royal College of Art. The brief was to improve the safety of pilot vessel to ship transfers at sea. There are a large number of marine pilots involved in both non-fatal and fatal accidents while boarding a huge range of ships worldwide in varying weather conditions. As the design of pilot ladders have not changed for 300 years, we found opportunity here to improve the effectiveness of pilot ladder design.

SUMMARY OF PROJECT Tradition pilot ladders haven't been changed for 300 years. The key drawbacks of the existing ladder for pilots relate to swinging, twisting and confidence in ladder condition. For the shipowners, the key concerns are cost and weight. Current ladders are mostly heavy and cumbersome which results to the crew often dragging and damaging the ladders or keeping the ladders exposed to weathering on deck rather than properly storing it away. Dynaweb is a one-piece pilot ladder that is safer for pilots and more cost effective for ship owners. It is three times lighter and ten times stronger than existing ladders and limits swing and twist while retaining vertical flexibility. The product is made easy for the crew on board to manage and stow away. Stability

Weight

Durability

HOW IT WORKS Dynaweb harnesses generative design to achieve precise control of flexibility at every point in the pilot ladder. 3D modelling softwares calculate the optimal internal structure the handles. The inner core of the handle has more cut outs in areas requiring more flexibility, and less in areas requiring more rigidity. A one piece construction is achieved by overmolding the handles to the steps. The flexible sections of the handles allows the ladder to roll up tidily for compact storage.

The handle is made from fiber reinforced rubber composite. The fibers provides continuous strength and the composite allows varying hardness. By using lightweight, nonabsorbent materials, Dynaweb is up to 3 times lighter than traditional pilot ladders. The lightweightness allows easier maneuverability and deployment- encouraging more consistent care by the crew. Protected materials and connections reduces damage from salt and chemicals, meaning safer and longer lasting ladders.

DESIGN PROCESS We gathered primary research from visits to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the Port of London Authority to better understand the crew’s needs and concerns. We considered the need for Dynaweb to be a familiar shape and size for the pilots to easily adapt. During development, we received feedback and validation from experienced marine pilots, members from the Lloyds Register Foundation and expertise from professors. Autodesk, has generously supported in the development of our prototypes, encouraging further exploration of 3D design capabilities. We are making prototypes, to realise possible manufacturing processes and cost. We have studied how to reduce number of parts and procedures to optimise material usage and labour. Using 3D printing and moulds, we tested manipulating the shape of a oblong inner core to reduce side to side movement, whilst still allowing a safe degree of front to back swing. The asymmetric structure flexes safely under turbulent conditions but does not bend away from the boat. Through generative design concepts, we tested optimising the inner structure of the handle for the best strength to weight ratio. We are investigating hybrid design methods to use generative design processes but alongside traditional moulding manufacturing methods.

Tradition pilot ladders haven't been changed for 300 years.

How is it different The traditional pilot ladder construction using manila rope and wooden steps has been updated to a single seamless structure. The one-piece ladder removes the need for mechanical connections which act as points of weakness, especially in extreme and corrosive environments. By making the ladder using synthetic fibre reinforced rubber composites, the ladder can become up to three times lighter and ten times stronger.

Awards Dynaweb was awarded prizes for Best Innovation (February 2017) and Best Business Plan (June 2017) by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and was shortlisted for the 2017 Seatrade Award in the Safety at Sea category.

BOWLING 2012

06 STOOL

BOWLING

STOOL

All toys presently face a common fate of being abandoned by the wayside as children grow older, with such wastefulness having a negative impact on the environment. The aim of this project is to design a product that not only delights children but has additional functionality when not being played with. Â I think the object which can deliver this idea is furniture, which provides not only an elemental physical support function but can also be a tool catalyzing interaction with the family.

BOWLING CHAIR

As a result, I designed a bowling toy set which can be assembled into a small stool. When kids want to bowl, rotating the stool legs releases the bowling pins from the ball, which furnishes three pins from each stool set. The two stool seats can then be placed together to form the ball.   To sit on a stool, one simply uses the inset magnets to reaffix the legs, then aligns them at the correctly right angles. As such, the entire bowling toy set transforms into two stools.   For storage, one reverses the steps to disassemble the stool.
As such, we have a small stool infused with genuine design sensibility.Storing the bowling toy economizes on space and one can easily assemble or disassemble it again later as desired.
