WHAT DOES YOUR App DO? The consideration of renewable energetic gain of a building becomes a main focus of contemporary sustainable assessments.

As a first approach the following survey, covering many aspects why people choose floor plans, shows dierent aspects but renewable energetic gain is one of the most important. With this app people can analyze various floor plans, on how much energy they could provide through solar systems in a whole year. With several floor plans they can calculate the kWh production per m2 which are connected to the roof surface. The kWh result of a floor plan allows us to calculate the heat and the electric gain through a solar system.

These calculations and their technical aspects we tackled with a combination of several floor plans, we drew in Rhino and connected them afterwards with Grasshopper, respectively Ladybug. Through these programs we calculate the energetic outcome per year, produced by any given square meter floor plan based on a specific location.

To mask those rather complicated, technical aspects, we developed several app mock ups to display one of many possibilities for a user friendly usage.

Evaluation We gave the survey to various people, mostly friends and family. 90% were filled out on paper, the rest answered by mail. In total we had 30 participants and 210 results. In respond to the survey, we found several interesting points of totally 30 people.

In general, people count a lot on the feelings inside as well as energy consumption. Daylight, energy and view seem to be ranked top. Orientation, water, costs and others count less than 10% and are therefore unimportant. None of the respondents added any parameters because their interests were already covered. For those who selected engery the parameter was always in prefered position. While talking to the participants, energy was always one of the main issues so they really care about solar gain and energy consumption. That´s why they want to take advantages of the house itself to reduce the energy consumption naturally.

Energetic assessment After our evaluation of the survey we noticed that „energy“ is one of the main parameters for most people. That is why we want to analyse various floor plans, on how much energy they could provide through solar systems in a whole year. So we are going to use several floor plans that we drew in Rhino and connect them with

Grasshopper, respectively Ladybug.

Thanks to this program we can calculate the kW hour production per square meter which is connected to the roof surface.

The kW hour result of a floor plan allows us to calculate the heat and the electric gain through solar systems for one year.

THE App CONCEpT The application mock up, we ought to develop or design is layered in three interfaces. The user is welcomed by the home screen which also marks the entrance to our app, on this screen you will get a brief introduction of what the app is about. The process of choosing a floor plan, generating a roof shape and the collecting of solar energy via solar thermal energy namely heating and photovoltaic with electricity as an outcome is shown in a rather simple drawing.

Through the search button, down in the right corner the user will get to the next interface to set the first three and most important parameters. Based on the given location, the number of rooms and the size of the floor plan itself our app will display various search results from which you can choose your favorites. The floor plans can be marked and saved in your personal library with a heart at the top left of each one of them.

The “filter” button at the bottom allows specifying your search results even further. Based on the yearly energy outcome or the size of the floor plans in combination with the choice of searching for solar thermal energy or photovoltaic the most specific search result will be shown.
