Community Impact Men’s Heart Healthy Breakfast and Women with Heart Luncheon In February, Morehouse School of Medicine held our Twelfth Annual Women With Heart Women’s Heart Healthy Luncheon at the Georgia Aquarium Oceans Ballroom. Women With Heart is a volunteer support organization established in 2009 by Mrs. Eilene Maupin, which is dedicated to raising student scholarship funds, promoting healthy lifestyles, and increase community awareness about heart health and cardiovascular disease.

Hank Aaron Bridge & Plaza Dedication Hank Aaron Bridge & Plaza posthumously honors one of the institution’s greatest champions and supporters, the late Henry “Hank” Aaron. As a lasting tribute to Mr. Aaron’s legacy, MSM officials gathered with members of the Aaron family and local civic leaders for the official renaming ceremony for the Hank Aaron Bridge, formerly known as the Lee Street Bridge. A ribbon cutting for the Hank Aaron Plaza on the Morehouse School of Medicine Campus was held after the bridge dedication. The plaza features a newly commissioned statue of Mr. Aaron located directly outside the Billye Suber Aaron Pavilion.

THE 13TH ANNUAL

Hugh M. Gloster Society C E L E B R AT I O N

Named in honor of the late Dr. Hugh M. Gloster, one of MSM’s esteemed founders and a president of Morehouse College, the Gloster Society was established in 2007 to help grow the institution’s philanthropic efforts. Since 2015, the Gloster Celebration has raised $9.2 million, including nearly $2 million in unrestricted student scholarship support raised at last year’s event. Among the awards that were presented at the event is the Louis C. Brown Vanguard Award, named for the late Atlanta internist who was among MSM’s founders, which honored Mrs. Billye Suber Aaron for her longtime support of Morehouse School of Medicine. The Vanguard Award recognizes a recipient’s pioneering spirit, extraordinary vision, exceptional leadership, and uncommon efforts that contribute to the health and well-being of vulnerable individuals and underserved communities.

Community Health Worker Awareness Day Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice spoke at Community Health Worker Awareness Day, alongside Dr. Kathleen Toomey, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health. The event took place at Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Atlanta and was created with the goal to help educate and inform state legislators about the Community Health Worker workforce.

Global Health Equity Summit

Morehouse School of Medicine and KPMG hosted the inaugural Dr. David Satcher Global Health Equity Summit, starting with a celebratory Welcome Reception at the Georgia Aquarium followed by the one-day summit at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. This summit, comprised of key global industry leaders across healthcare, technology, and academia, came together to discuss topics around Global Health Equity and closing the gap around health disparities.

MSM Around the Lake Nona Impact Forum LEADERS CONVENE IN LAKE NONA FOR SECOND ANNUAL IMPACT FORUM The nation’s foremost CEOs, academics and healthcare leaders gathered at the emerging life science cluster in Lake Nona Medical City to generate and exchange ideas that inspire new ways to address healthcare, wellness and sustainability practices in our communities. The 2023 Lake Nona Impact Forum explored the roles technology, innovation, collaboration, imagination, wellness and prevention play in health and health care by uniting business executives and key innovators from academia, industry, healthcare delivery and government for three days of symposia and informal conversations. “We built upon our successful Forum last year and are gratified with the interest we generated around the activity at Lake Nona,” said Dr. Thaddeus Seymour Jr., president of the Lake Nona Institute and host of the 2023 Lake Nona Impact Forum.

TED Women 2023 Dr. Montgonery Rice was a featured speaker at the TEDWomen2023 Conference here in Atlanta, GA. She had the opportunity to present during the session “Moving On Up,” which closed out the conference and featured words from a selected group of artists, advocates, innovators, and leaders.

TAG Academy At Morehouse School of Medicine, we're committed to providing support in character development, attitudes towards learning, and social-emotional learning. Our kickoff event for the MSM-TAG Academy Mentoring Program, allows members of the MSM community to mentor 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy.

Dr. Montgomery Rice serves on the board for CARE. An organization that works around the globe to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice. This year they traveled to Ghana to meet with leaders to discuss achieving hope and social justice.

Match Day

Morehouse School of Medicine celebrated its fourth-year medical students during Match Day 2023 on Friday, March 17, as they reached a pivotal milestone in their medical education and learned where they will serve their residencies. An astounding 98 percent of MSM’s Doctor of Medicine students who participated in the match were paired with residency placements, including 81 percent who received their first or only choice of specialty.

We held our 39th Annual Commencement Exercises in the historic Martin Luther King Jr International Chapel Our Commencement Speaker, Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, encouraged our graduates to enter the healthcare workforce with the intention to serve the underserved and their communities, and to continue the fight for health equity. 170 graduates received their degrees in various healthcare areas of study including Master of Public Health, Master of Science in Medical Sciences, and Doctor of Medicine. Congratulations to all of our 2023 graduates!

Morehouse School of Medicine welcomed 374 new students into its Doctor of Medicine, Public Health, Physician Assistant Studies, and Biomedical Sciences programs at its 39th Fall Convocation and White Coat and Pinning Ceremony on Friday, September 15.

Expanding the Morehouse School of Medicine Brand Morehouse Healthcare (MHC), the clinical services arm of Morehouse School of Medicine, announced the “soft launch” of its new Morehouse Healthcare at East Point clinic, in partnership with Fulton County and Atrium Health. “As Morehouse School of Medicine continues to lead the creation and advancement of health equity to achieve health justice, we are committed to providing compassionate care, and innovative medicine to the residents of south Fulton County,” said MSM President & CEO Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice. The East Point clinic will offer comprehensive primary care services. When fully implemented, the clinic will have over 20 exam rooms, will have the capacity for six providers who will see patients across the full life spectrum, and will operate with extended hours. Morehouse Healthcare at East Point’s current hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Sea Island Alumni Engagement Dinner

Morehouse School of Medicine held an Alumni Engagement Hub event in Sea Island, GA, where over 40 alums came out to represent our MD, MPH, and Health Informatics programs. MSM supporters attorney Larry D. Thompson and Dr. Brenda A. Thompson graciously opened their home to host our event. Speakers included Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, MSM National Alumni Association VP Dr. Bonzo Reddick, MPH student Joshua Powell, and Office of Institutional Advancement VP Kandy Ferree.

New York City Alumni Networking Event

In October, members of MSM leadership traveled to New York City for our IMPACT Event to garner support for the ongoing $500 million IMPACT Campaign. Trustee Aaron Dent and Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice spoke about Morehouse School of Medicine’s work to improve health outcomes through innovative education, cutting-edge research, and clinical care while diversifying the healthcare workforce.

Government Relations & Public Policy Bernie Sanders Visits MSM Morehouse School of Medicine had the honor of hosting U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions HELP Committee Field Roundtable. The event, Sen. Sanders’ first field roundtable as HELP Committee Chairman, featured leaders from HBCU medical schools and other healthcare experts to discuss how to address the crisis in our nation’s healthcare workforce, raise the number of Black Americans in the medical field, increase access to primary care, and improve health outcomes for Black Americans. In addition to Sen. Sanders, remarks were given by Morehouse School of Medicine President and CEO Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice; Meharry Medical College Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Jeanette SouthPaul; Howard University Senior Vice President for Health Affairs Dr. Hugh E. Mighty; Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science Dr. David Carlisle; and Association of American Medical Colleges President and CEO Dr. David J. Skorton, as well as MSM students and residents. The HELP Committee’s field roundtable continued efforts by Chairman Sanders to address healthcare workforce shortages across the country and ensure quality, affordable health care.

Congressional Black Caucus Visit The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation presented their 52nd Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. This year, Georgia Power honored the work of Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice and Morehouse School of Medicine. We’re honored to be recognized for the incredible work being done at our institution to lead the creation and advancement of health equity to achieve health justice.

Awards Thomas J. Blocker Award Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice was honored by the Morehouse College Thomas J. Blocker Society at the 2nd Annual Living Legends Gala for her contributions to medicine. The Thomas J. Blocker Society is a health professions alumni society of Morehouse College committed to assisting undergraduate students and students of color who are interested in the health professions through academic advisement, clinical shadowing, mentoring, summer science enrichment programs and academic scholarships.

2023 Scroll of Merit Award Morehouse School of Medicine is proud to announce that President and CEO Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice has received the 2023 Scroll of Merit Award from the National Medical Association (NMA), the organization’s highest honor. The award was presented to Dr. Montgomery Rice on July 29, 2023, during the Opening Honors and Awards event at the National Medical Association Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in New Orleans, Louisiana.
