As a parish we are sponsoring a young seminarian, Anthony Ojukwu, who is from the same village in Nigeria as Fr. John Ugobeze (from Danville). Anthony is a senior seminarian of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha, Nigeria. Having just finished his philosophical studies at Pope John Paul II major seminary in Okpuno Awka, John will continue in October with his theological studies. Your financial support will cover his tuition and allow him to continue his studies without interruption. Please give generously.

Celebrate 100 years of Holy Cross School & Church!! Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Sunday, September 9th through Wednesday, September 19th. Here are just some of the many events we look forward to enjoying…..

Sunday, September 16th Holy Cross Contemporary Choir. The Contemporary Choir will provide music every Sunday at the 4:00 p.m. Mass beginning on September 9th. We regularly feature guitars and piano, and add specialty instruments such as trumpets or percussion, whenever possible. New members who are committed to serving in this ministry are always welcome. This year we are especially looking to add vocalists. Being able to read music is helpful, but not required. We practice one evening during the week and before Mass on Sunday afternoon. If you are interested, please contact the director, Janis Schweizer at 359-6530 or by e-mail at using “Holy Cross Choir” in the subject line. COFFEE AND DONUTS. In Mid-September the Sunday morning Coffee Shop will resume. We need a little of your 'TIME' to host. "Host" volunteers will work only one Mass. Please sign up to host after the 8:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. Mass. Coffee Shop gives us a chance to get acquainted with other parishioners. Please give a small amount of your time to keep it going. Call Cheri at 352-4918 if you have any questions. P.S. This gift of time would be a great family project once or twice a year. If you are a member of a group (scouts, RCIA, a bible study group, Family Formation, etc.), why not sign up for a couple of times? It only takes 2-3 people to do the job. THE BIBLE TIMELINE STUDY. Mark your calendars! Our fall Bible study will be The Great Adventure Bible Timeline 2.0. This is the one that started it all--the foundational study in The Great Adventure Series. And now, it's even better. The videos have been redone with new graphics, maps, and animations to make it more understandable. The entire Bible tells a story, and when you learn that story-the Bible comes alive. The Bible Timeline will take you through that story. The study begins October 1st and 2nd and lasts 24 weeks. The deadline for registration is September 17th. To register, call the Parish Office at 352-8748.

HOLY CROSS HISTORY This year has brought a terrible drought throughout the country and here in Champaign. Even before the drought the trees and plants which surround our beautiful church and school have been stressed by hard winters, and last year's heat. Just recently two trees were removed from the front of the Parish Center because they were dead. As we grow and change and eventually perish, so do the trees and plants surrounding our church complex. Did you know that many of the trees around the Parish Center and the school were donated 20 years ago in honor/memory of certain members of the parish and their loved ones? Near the Parish Center: The parkway trees, 2 pears and 2 lindens, were donated in memory of Richard Stephens, Ed Bown and Joe Knoke. The Cedars and Junipers were donated in memory of Tom and Bessie Flora and in honor of the Lamendola/Smith family. The Armstrong Maples were donated in gratitude to the work of the trustees Dwyer Murphy and Jim Bayne. Pete Somers and Paul and Eleanor Tabaka donated, the West family and Chris Main were honored, and Mary Luesse was memorialized with those trees. The lawn itself was sponsored by Mr and Mrs. Carl Jones in honor of our then Director of Religious Education, Doug Muir. Within the parishioner's garden (in the cloister) are hemlocks, cedars and junipers. Some were purchased in gratitude for the work of Harry and Diane Breen, some were a gift of Father Mullen, and one cedar was planted for the 40th anniversary of Frank and Darlene Young. Other gifts in the cloister included ones from Marcella Grostephan, Kenneth Irle, in memory of Heather Bruce and in gratitude to Teresa Redmond. A schoolyard cedar was planted in gratitude to Doyle Moore, and three flowering crabapples were planted in memory of Philip Kappes. Next time you arrive at church or school, reflect on all the people who helped to make the entire block a beautiful place. Do you know of other such contributions? We'd love to know! Contact Barb Garvey at 359-6089, or

Family Formation is the program of religious education and formation at Holy Cross for children of grade school age (grades K-6) and their parents. In Family Formation, the whole family effectively grows in faith together! Interested but not sure if you can fit Family Formation into your schedule? Are your children already in Catholic School and you're not sure you want one more thing to do? Family Formation is not the “one more activity” that pulls your family apart. It may just be “THE activity” that can bring your family together. For more information about Family Formation or if you would like to register for this year please contact the Parish Office at 352-8748. Deadline for registration is Monday, August 20th.
