iceno lands soul

What makes a quality wine special and unique? Natural land scents captured by vineyards, the intensity of sunshine and temperatures, thousands of years’ experience and practical knowledge, the quality of woods. Not to mention passion or manners when poured into the correct cup, or the required skills of the senses involved. Wine is able

to tell about a culture, it may describe its millennial habits of disciplined palates. On these Italian latitudes it tells about Piceno lands, hilly landscapes of peninsular breeze and Mediterranean sunshine, birthplace of a DOC (Checked Origin Denomination quality): Rosso Piceno Superiore, unmistakable ruby red colour, remarkable body and soft

persistent taste that suggest red fruits and floral elements.

“P iazza del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno is like the rooms of an outdoor museum, travertine sculptures of refined elegance upon which the history of many other noble towers is supported”

ASCOLI

100 Towers City

Ascoli Piceno has been compared to Florence in terms of art riches: it is like browsing an outdoor art history book. In Marche, Ascoli is better known as “the 100 towers city”. Traits of medieval splendour are also evident in the architectural features of its close-set roads and alleys around Piazza del Popolo. Ascoli is located in the confluence area of two

rivers. The approaching visitor, arriving from one of the Roman bridges, has the stunning impression of being in front of some kind of art revelation. A significant large number of Roman constructions, medieval architecture, gothic and renaissance buildings and monuments give Ascoli Piceno its special extraordinary beauty. A beauty distinctively marked

by the grace of travertine white. Ascoli, white pearl of the Piceno. A private tour guide will provide enriching information about the art, history and culture of these incredible antique settings. Ascolan stuffed olives and excellent local wine, delectable traditional delicacies.

1 Day: Arrival is expected in Ascoli Piceno in the afternoon. Check-in at the Residenza 100 Torri, a charme hotel of significant historic interest, very near Piazza del Popolo square. In one of its beautiful internal yards, guests are welcomed with a cup of luscious Rosso Piceno wine and some Ascolan stuffed olives. Two delectable local authenticities of these lands. Maraviglia suggests a visit to the National Archaeological Museum, with plenty of ancient Piceno culture archaeological finds. Dinner time: the suggestion is Gallo d’Oro restaurant. Then, a relaxing stroll around this ancestral town so as to find out about its almost three times millenial features and traits.

• National Archaeological Museum. An impressive collection of local archaeological pieces belonging to a span which takes since pre-history times until the Middle Ages. It is relevant here to draw special attention to the archaeological pieces belonging to ancient Piceno civilization (IX to IV B.C.), origin of the Marchigian culture. Very interesting items are the Piceno stele stone of Castignano. Also, the incredible amount of glans plumbea (lead projectiles) used in the social rights struggles to obtain the Roman citizenship.

RESIDENZA 100 TORRI ****

The Quintana joust Ascoli Piceno. 1st Sunday of August Ascoli dives into the past with the Giostra della Quintana. It is possible to have a 360° view of the long crenellated walls of XVI century castles and other buildings including San Francesco church, the Loggia dei Mercanti and the art nouveau style of one-hundred-year-old Caffé Meletti by Piazza del Popolo (guests may try its delicious traditional coffee ‘corrected’ with ‘anisetta’, an espresso coffee with the addition of some anisette liqueur drops). The visit continues towards Piazza Arringo which is dominated by the caryatids of Arringo Palace; the Civic picture gallery exhibiting the works of outstanding artists including Carlo Crivelli, Tiziano, Pietro Alemanno and Cola d’Amatrice. Later different ‘rue’ (streets) of Medieval and Lombard neighbourhoods will lead the party to one of the Roman bridges.. The variety of antique architectural riches is endless including the peculiarities of the inscriptions on the architraves of old houses with proverbs and sayings in Latin and Vulgar Latin. Heavenly fortresses

With this programme Maraviglia aims at making visitors enjoy some of the most well-known fortresses in Marche. For over 300 years (between the XIII and the XVI centuries) the Lords of Camerino, the Varano Lords, built a consistent system of defensive fortresses, including towers and walls in order to

protect and control the traffic of goods between Rome and the Adriatic sea. The regular clean sky conditions and military genius of these Lords gave origin to a very particular system of communication based on visual signals among the fortresses and towers. The programme includes taking part in the magic atmosphere

of the Varano Lords’ military scenarios under a clean starry sky so as to get a closer understanding of these Lords’ genius and battle grounds. To the East of Camerino, there is another invaluable area of defensive fortresses with Papacy traits.

RADARA The walls of eternal Love

According to legend, Gradara Castle was the setting of the famous and tragic love story of Paolo Malatesta and Francesca of Rimini, caught in each other's arms and killed by Gianciotto, Francesca's husband and Paolo’s brother. This love story was immortalized by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy (V Canto, Inferno). A

visit to Gradara Castle involves setting off on a timeless journey; untrammelled riches and wonders of historic interests. Unfathomable art and architectural clues give birth to newfound sensations. Surrounding nature and evocative architecture converge to keep glorious antique memories alive. The fortress,

with its almost poetic nature and enchanting surrounding sceneries seems to echo passionate enthralling stories of long lost eternal love; like Paolo and Francesca’s.

For those travellers arriving in the early afternoon, and once they have made sure they have all their sailing food and water supplies, Maraviglia suggests a visit to the historic centre of old Ancona. The city was born in function of the sea and that is the way its essence should be understood. Ancona stood out on the Guasco mount, its Syracusian founders’ traits still resound amidst its Roman remains: the amphitheatre, temples, villas and thermaes. It is a 3-hour tour round places of historic interest around Ancona. The Conero mount with its cliffs dropping into sea and its promontories emerging from crystal waters near its vertical walls provides an absolute extraordinary sight on the Italian Adriatic coast. Mountain bushes run into the Mediterranean scrub. Vegetation belonging to higher inland mingles with the low

shore bushes. An incredible green embrace on these cliffs. Uninhabited hillsides, valleys and cliffs in direct contact with sea waters and white sands. Going inland, we find the excellences of Rosso Conero wine vineyards and unspoilt rare nature gifts such as yellow carpets of broom flowers, strawberry trees and

It often happens that after having developed your holiday photographs, your immediate reaction to the images is “they don’t quite effectively render the actual beauty of the place”. This programme includes a twofold offer: relaxing leisure amidst the marvel of these Italian lands and a more didactic aspect in the form of a photographic course. Individually, with a partner or in small groups, with the guidance

of a professional photographer, guests will be able to improve their photographic techniques or learn about the art. Magnificent nature will provide for the rest with the Conero cliffs dropping into sea, the Sibillini mounts, ever-spreading rolling landscapes of great beauty; dawns and sunsets intensities. The fulfilling satisfaction of coming back home after having immortalized your new

photographic skills on the one hand, and the beauty, this time effectively caught, of these marvellous lands. 2 days’ course on 2 different sceneries. Various landscape alternatives from which to choose according to the season. Theory lessons, handson training, post-production and personal photographic equipments at guests’ disposal.

ADDENDUM: ESCURSIONI E SERVIZI 1.
