The site is ideal in many respects: it is on a major arterial street of Chicago (Broadway Avenue), it is located one block from the Lawrence CTA Redline Station, and most importantly it sits across the street from the Uptown Theater, Green Mill and the Aragon Entertainment Center.

SURROUNDS THE CENTRAL ATRIUM, WHICH CREATES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SPILLOUT, SO THAT IT BECOMES A SPACE REMINISCENT OF A PUBLIC STREET FRONT.

FLOOR 5

AS YOU MOVE FROM THE ATRIUM TO THE MORE SPECIFIED PROGRAMS, INTERSTITIAL SPACES SUCH AS BATHROOMS, CAFE KITCHENS, AND LOUNGES ACT AS CONNECTOR AND OVERLAP SPACES. BY ALLOWING AN INTERNET CAGE AND A RESTAURANT TO SHARE A KITCHEN AND BATHROOMS, THE OVERALL SQUARE FOOTAGE IS REDUCED AND THERE EXISTS THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO USE ARCHITECTURE TO EXPOSE PEOPLE TO SOMETHING THEY MAY NOT HAVE ORIGINALLY INTENDED. BOTH VISUALLY AND PHYSICALLY CONNECTING SPACES WITHIN THE BUILDING BASED ON THEIR SPECIFIC NEEDS AND COMMONALITIES MAKES FOR A FUNCTIONAL, YET ELEGANT AND BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE.

Corridor Restrooms Transition

Programmatically, the building is organized around a central atrium to allow for spill-out. Architecturally, this begins to manifest itself through expansion and contraction of spaces. Layered materiality is a technique used to facilitate spatial transitions. The perforated design of the exterior aluminum screen captures windows of activity and maintains varying levels of privacy.

Creating an interior ecosystem ... The office is dependent on both the physical environment (abiotic factor) and the workforce (biotic factor). Within the workforce are a series of communities that work together in a synergistic relationship much like the functional groups of an ecosystem. Harnessing natural energy and reusing waste will create a more efficient and sustainable workplace. The study of ecology can be broken down into four studies: of the individual, of the population, of the community, and of the ecosystem.
