EDITO New creativity is plentiful. And that it makes uncertain. But it is moving. Actually, it’s a contemporary version of the world eternally turns round of Montaigne. I do not paint its being, I paint its passage. The passage of a time lapse – l’air du temps – is here. Within this new creative scene which feels, seeks, finds, inhabits unusual places, experiences and ignores artistic or territorial boundaries. Creators-creatives-artists-designers of today are whole. Probably free. Nourished also. Realistic. They are guided by intuition rather than by craftmanship. And this is the feeling that is summarized in the hundred pages of the MAOW BOOK : impressing. It was decided to gather fifty artists. They are often from Belgium because this project was born in Belgium, with its stories that follow. People who know someone who knows another. People we love. People we cross. People we meet. People we discover. There are also proposals coming from the other side of the world. There is the belgian printer, obviously. There are pieces of life in which we dive into. There are the I like/I hate. There are the preferences. And that’s subjective. Even better. Because this plentiful scene resounds. We rarely take the time to bring together artists on such a unique emotional theme. However, this is probably the best way to paint the passage. If it’s not the being. The MAOW BOOK’s bold gamble - and loving, because there is love within - is here. In this choice for everything, despite everything. And in its sincerity of the present. Amandine Maziers, journalist

THE STORY OF MAOW BOOK It all started with the desire to work out a collective artistic project. Together with some artist friends, Anna Touvron launched the idea of making a calendar in the form of a small bound paper edition that included the works of various creative people. The concept lasted 3 years with each edition showcasing 12 different artists. As this turned out to be a very rewarding experience, Anna decided to proceed on a larger scale : editing and publishing a real book in which she would once more present several artists. She designed the concept and called it MAOW – a name that simply comes from some joke among friends. Against all expectations, she received more than 150 quality portfolios among which 50 artists were selected. She then created the logo MAOW and began to work on the layout of the book. MAOW BOOK presents 50 artists coming from many countries around the world : illustrators, fine artists, painters, sculptors, photographers, screen printers, motion designers and more. Looking into the future, Anna wants to expand the MAOW project as an alternative platform for artists in Brussels. A space for creation and exposure that allows emerging artists and designers to increase their visibility.
