Get started now on that Christmas shopping If you haven’t begun your Christmas shopping, you need to get cracking. That’s the advice of one expert. With less than a month to go until Christmas Day we decided to seek out advice for the reluctant and the confused shopper to make the retail experience that little bit smoother. If you are one of those people for whom the mere thought of Christmas shopping either brings you out in a rash or causes you to search for the nearest dealer in humbugs, Claire Britnell’s words of wisdom may just make the next few weeks a little easier. Claire, store manager at The Mill Shop in Tynwald Mills, says the most important piece advice for those who have yet to commence their Christmas shopping is: ‘Start as early as you can, which spreads the cost and minimises the stress.’ For many, the prospect of heading out into the high streets and shopping centres in search of the perfect gift for a loved one, or the ideal present for a relative they barely see, fills them with dread. But Claire says there are some simple things to bear in mind that will make life a lot easier for the

shopper and also, hopefully, ensure the right presents are opened on Christmas Day. ‘If you need assistance and you have really got to plan your entire Christmas shopping, come into shops early in the day – when they are not quite so busy - and ask for assistance from the sales advisers,’ she suggests. ‘At this stage they know their stock incredibly well and are more than happy to walk customers around their shops. ‘By now we can see what lines are really popular.’ If making it first thing in the morning is not practical, Claire says another time that usually is less busy is about 4pm, when it starts to go dark. If you’re buying for children, one thing to remember is this: the annual clamour for the impossibleto-get toy or game is not just a marketing ploy to pressure you into buying early, it’s genuine and stores do run out as suppliers fail to meet demand. Claire says last year the must-have gift was a Furby and the updated version this year is likely to be in demand equally, while Doc McStuffins gifts are also expected to be hot property,

‘It is not hype. We were having shipments of Furbies last year and they weren’t even making it to the shop floor because we had orders in from customers.’ So getting in early for your kids’ presents is crucial. These days, the temptation to avoid the bad weather and the crowds and instead buy on the internet is greater than ever. Claire acknowledges shopping on the internet is tempting for customers, but says there are some things you cannot replicate online. ‘A lot of the time, if it is an unfamiliar product, you need to see it in the flesh and handle it to see if it is the right colour and the right size. It is very hard to judge something on the internet ‘A clothes shop can show 40 different brands at a time. ‘We understand the internet is massive but we try to offer an experience for the customer.’ That need has seen more entertainment in shopping centres in the run up to Christmas, with everything from music to Santa available in some places. Some stores will take all the strain out for you as well, says Claire, with staff obtaining the details of

the intended recipients before coming up with their own suggestions for presents. And there is some specific advice for those looking to buy the perfect gift for the woman in their life. ‘If you don’t know someone’s size, steer clear of clothes and lingerie,’ Claire says. ‘Go for something more secure, like jewellery or a handbag.’

Dealing with life’s disappointments I have just been to the gym for the first time in nine months. Judging by the reading on the scales, I still need to give birth. While my added weight was not entirely unexpected, I can’t help but feel slightly disappointed. In spite of all the evidence pointing to the contrary, I was hoping that I had not actually put on that much. It’s a bit like, despite everything suggesting otherwise, you hope each year that the X Factor will banish the phrase ‘you made it your own’. It’s about as likely to happen as Sharon Osbourne becoming the next face of Clinique. One gym fanatic media chum suggested the extra weight I have attained was ‘motivation’. It’s true, I was just hoping for a little less motivation. Anyway, life is full of these disappointments. Without wishing to decry its place in the footballing pantheon, I must admit that when, shortly after moving to the Island 23 years ago, I first paid a visit to Ballacloan Stadium in Ramsey, I felt I had been misled a little by the terminology. And this is from someone who grew up watching Stockport County at Edgeley Park.

I should point out at this stage that if you pay a visit to the home of Ramsey AFC these days - or even just look up the venue on worldstadiums.com - it’s got a much more impressive air about it. Still not sure about the word stadium, although I guess it makes it easier for some smaller groups to describe their music as stadium rock. I used to find Glen Vine rather disappointing. These days it does not trouble me so much, partly because now that Crosby has lost its post office, it’s not got much over on its nearest neighbour. There was a time when the quality of political debate – both here and in the UK – used to disappoint me, but the truth is now that expectations are so low that I only find the biggest sneers from David Cameron disappointing, while if Ed Miliband ever stopped sounding like the Blackadder version of Pitt the Younger, that would constitute a let down. As for our own MHKs, what could possibly disappoint any of us who ever has the good fortune to listen to the debating skills of the Island’s finest? Follow Paul on Twitter: @Norbertsdad

Winter Wonderland to celebrate the miracle of Christmas The Home of Rest for Horses is transforming into a Winter Wonderland this Saturday (November 30). Charity Manx Miracles is putting on a special event at the venue to create a magical Christmas experience for families. A spokesman said: ‘As a children’s charity Christmas is an ideal time for us to host something to thank the wonderful Manx public who have supported us so generously.’ There will be plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained face painting, glitter tattoos, nail art, creating your own Christmas decoration, decorating gingerbread man, children’s competitions, including a raffle, plus the chance to visit to Father Christmas in his grotto. Everywhere will be decorated and there will be plenty of elves and fairies around to add to the atmosphere.

All activities are under cover and entry is free – each activity is £1. The magic happens from 11am4pm. • Manx Miracles is a charity set up to help children with additional needs. It is bidding to raise £80,000 for a new sensory room at the Island’s Pre-School Assessment Centre in Pulrose. The charity is run by mum Louise Connor and a team of dedicated volunteers. Louise’s son Harrison, was born with a whole range of health problems that contributed to his delayed development, but since he started attending the Pre-School Assessment Centre, his development has improved greatly and Louise was determined to give something back. Get ready for lift off with the 4G revolution The next year is going to see a revolution in communications in the Isle of Man with the advent of 4G technology, which will mean much faster mobile broadband speeds, making access to the internet on

Manx Telecom is teaming up with ICT solutions provider Huawei to deliver its 4G LTE mobile broadband network. As well as building the network’s infrastructure, Huawei will also supply the latest 4G devices to the Manx Telecom portfolio, which MT says will see customers enjoy mobile broadband speeds several times faster than the current 3G services. Huawei will also update Manx Telecom’s 2G and 3G networks to the latest generation technology, aiming to improve performance across the entire mobile network. Manx Telecom CEO Mike Dee (pictured, left) said: ‘Over the next three years we will invest £10 million in 4G and we are very excited to announce our partnership with Huawei. ‘We have selected the best supplier, and the most advanced solution, which offers the flexibility we require to ensure that we can continue to offer

mobile devices faster and easier. The Manx Advertiser decided to get an update from both Manx Telecom and Sure as we get set for lift off in a new era of technology.

our customers a world class service.’ Huawei will deliver and integrate 4G LTE base stations into Manx Telecom’s existing mobile network to enable high performance mobile applications and multimedia services, including video calling and conferencing, highdefinition content transmissions such as live TV streaming, high-speed video downloads and uploads, and faster access to social networking platforms. Victor Zhang, CEO at Huawei UK, (pictured, right) said Manx Telecom had a ‘reputation for delivering innovative services to their customers’.

Sure says it will launch its 4G services in the second quarter of 2014 – having completely upgraded its Isle of Man network over the past 12 months to pave the way for its introduction. It says 4G will provide technology to allow high speed broadband in the home and for mobiles without the need for a home phone line. It describes 4G as ‘like 3G on steroids’. The introduction of 4G is the first opportunity for wireless mobile

speeds to overtake landline speeds, it says, at a time when high speed access to the internet is becoming a basic expectation. Andy Bridson, Sure CEO (pictured), said: ‘Many of us already use our mobile devices for accessing the internet, but 4G is set to revolutionise the ease and speed with which we can access all types of media. ‘We continue to invest heavily in the Isle of Man. We will continue to deliver new technologies in both consumer and business markets that provide customers with quality, reliability, value and speed.’ Sure, which also supplies telecommunications in Guernsey and Jersey, is a member of the Betelco Group, which provides services to 16 markets around the world.

Cayman National Bank acquires fiduciary firm’s clients Cayman National Bank and Trust Company, based in Hope Street, Douglas, has completed the acquisition of the clients from HL Fiduciaries Limited, from the shareholders of local chartered accountants, Harding Lewis Limited. The staff of HL Fiduciaries, Lee Penrose and Dianne Bird, have joined Cayman National’s fiduciary team. Managing director of Cayman National, Ian Bancroft, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome the clients of HL Fiduciaries to our group. Cayman National and HL Fiduciaries share a common belief in delivering a high quality, personalised

service, and we extend a warm welcome to our new clients.’ Roz Melia, head of fiduciary services at Cayman National, added: ‘Lee Penrose and Dianne Bird bring with them a wealth of experience in business development and corporate administration and they will be valuable additions to our team.’ Andrew Gerrard, director of HL Fiduciaries, said: ‘We are delighted to have successfully completed the transfer of business from HL Fiduciaries to Cayman National, and know that our clients will continue to be looked after with the same professionalism and enthusiasm in the course of their dealings with Cayman National.

Jobs safe in management buyout at Royal London 360° It has entered in to an agreement with funds advised by independent private equity firm Vitruvian Partners to support the buyout of RL360° and its subsidiaries for an undisclosed sum. The RL360° executive management team, led by chief executive David Kneeshaw (pictured, with directors Mike Crellin and Simon Pack), will remain unchanged. Following completion, the company will be re-branded RL360°. There will be no job losses as part of the sale. Mr Kneeshaw said: ‘The entire management team at RL360° are extremely excited that RLG has agreed to our proposals for a management-led buyout, backed by Vitruvian. We have built a strong business since we merged in 2009 with clear strategic direction, a compelling product range and a service-driven team on the Isle of Man and around the world to support our customers and distributors. ‘We believe this transaction is the first of its type in the offshore life space and it allows us to follow a long-term plan with the capital stability we require to continue to expand our business internationally and enhance our platform linked approach with the UK.’

RL360° will be further strengthened through support from the global reinsurance group Munich Re, as well as an element of long term financing from RLG, and in addition to capital from Vitruvian. With about 200 staff, 180 based in the Isle of Man, RL360° was established in 2009 through the merger of Scottish Life International and Scottish Provident International. The company offers a broad range of offshore investment, savings and tax planning products to investors based around the world, managing funds in excess of #2 billion. Phil Loney, Chief Executive of the Royal London Group, said: “RLG has been approached on several occasions with proposals for the purchase of RL360° and we had a duty to our members to explore any potential financial benefits from these transactions. None of these previous approaches were capable of being fulfilled. However, the RLG board has concluded that the proposal put forward by the RL360° management team does make compelling financial and strategic sense for all parties.’

‘This transaction will enable us to concentrate on our own core accountancy business of Harding Lewis Limited.’
