About the Designer

In the hands of textile and clothing designer Juandi Andrag, silk takes sensual shape to tell stories that unfold and mutate over time. Her creations are visually impactful, iridescent expressions of the dualistic fragility and fortitude of feminine energy. Delicate, yet durable. Juandi works from her home studio in Stellenbosch, which she shares with her family. She studied fashion design at Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design after completing a diploma in culinary arts at the Institute of Culinary Arts. She is inspired by the many forms of art used by women to express their sensuality, giving life to the mysticism of female energy. She also finds inspiration in mythological goddesses and Jungian dreamscapes, always searching for the beauty of imperfection to express on silk, her chosen medium. Outside of her silk cocoon, she indulges her other passion – entertaining friends and family around long, slow cooked meals .

Mantua Collection man~tu~a ˈman(t)SHəwə/ noun A woman's loose gown of a kind fashionable during the 17th and 18th centuries. From French manteau "cloak, mantle," from Old French mantel (see mantle); form influenced in English by Mantua, name of a city in Italy. Mantua-maker (1690s) became the general early 19c. term for "dressmaker."

Mindful of the centuries-old traditions of ancient China’s Mulberry Culture, Mantua Silkwear produces slow wear for a fast world. One considered piece at a time. Mantua Silkwear is inspired by art, the ethereal luminosity of silk and how it transforms to the body. As a counterpoint to disposable fashion, the Mantua Collection of silk scarves is trans-seasonal and beyond trends. Each scarf is hand cut and hand painted or made from printed silk exclusively designed by us. Watercolour artworks are printed on hand-hemmed silk scarves in limited editions. The design process is driven by an intrinsic awareness of colour, space and shape, and of the body as canvas for wearable art. Mantua scarves come in sizes from 90 X 90 cm to 110 X 110 cm.
