Horley’s Baby Café

It’s not Costa or Planet Sweet but there’s a café in Horley where the clientele have one thing in common – they all order milk!

H

orley’s Baby Café is part of the Baby Café Network, now an international charitable trust providing information and support to mothers wishing to breast feed their babies.

As their website suggests: ‘A Baby Café is a place where breastfeeding is considered the normal way to feed and care for a baby. Mums can expect to receive up-to-date information about breastfeeding, including professional help from staff who are knowledgeable and skilled in helping women breastfeed, and enjoy a relaxed, informal, safe, child-friendly, non-medical environment. If you have not fed your baby whilst being out and about before, Baby Café is the perfect environment to bridge the gap from being at home to feeding elsewhere’ The idea started in 2000 when health professionals Catherine Pardoe and Julie Williams, started an NHS funded drop-in centre in Horsham for breastfeeding mothers.

The scheme took off with a growing number of groups being established nationally and the Baby Café Network became a charitable trust in 2006, later merging with the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) in 2010.

The Baby Café network is promoted by GP surgeries, hospitals and health visitors, and research shows that mums who have support from other mothers while breastfeeding are more likely to continue.

Horley’s group celebrates its 10th birthday at the end of this month, whilst their early clients may now be glugging cola and juice new families have kept coming in the past decade resulting in its continued success.

Run by the Horley Children’s Centre and the Windmill Children Centre a drop-in session is open every Monday during term time and there is no appointment needed or fee.

Any breastfeeding or pregnant mother is welcome along with their partners - they will find a warm and caring environment run by breastfeeding counsellors and volunteer peer supporters.

Organiser and NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor, Anne Humphreys, says: “Our peer supporters are really skilled in listening to visitors and helping them to explore their problems. I really couldn’t run the Baby Café without the volunteers.’

“These cafés provide such an essential service and I dearly wish that I’d had access to something like this when I was a young mum. As one Horley mum has said, ‘I’ve found it’s been my haven coming here!” Anne said.

Say Cheese!

...It was with smiles that I was warmly greeted by Veronica Ballard MBE, Honorary President of Horley Photographic Club, and Secretary Audrey Whiting, two members of the Club’s 10-strong committee.

H

ad I met these ladies in any other situation I would never have imagined that outdoor-loving Veronica has a passion for rust and decay, and cookery fan Audrey, for urban street life and digitally-mutated flowers! Yet such is the creative power of their hobby – photographers like these see the world in a different way to the rest of us.

Although surrounded by photographers, myself (my husband and son love all things photographic!) my capacity for the art mainly involves decapitating my nearest and dearest in holidays snaps, and posting charity shop finds on Instagram, yet even I can recognise a good photograph when I see it, and I saw plenty when I discovered the work of Horley Photographic Club members.

Not to be mistaken for a specifically tutorial group, their weekly meetings are for photographers of all abilities who share a passion for photography whatever their personal style and approach.

They have regular professional speakers like Gavin Hoey and Ann Beauchamp, they run Ayala and other competitions, and also ‘challenge’ evenings.

They also organise field trips and outings. Most importantly though, whatever members’ experience and skill level, all can encourage and learn from each other.

The Club is long-established having been founded in 1958 and it is part of the Surrey Photographic Association.

There are currently 32 members with room for plenty more of any age (under 16s should be accompanied by an adult). They meet weekly every Wednesday at Horley Methodist Church at 7.45pm for 8.00pm from September to June.

Annual full membership is £45 (full members can enter competitions) and social membership is just £25.

However, as a taster, enquirers can attend up to 3 meetings before committing themselves to any membership at all so to be sure that it is the right club for them.

One of their most recent ventures is a competition run in conjunction with local schools which slots in nicely with the Art curriculum. The theme, ‘A Day Out’, aims at encouraging youngsters to capture images of the world around them through the eye of their cameras digital, film, even on their phone.

A Safe Heaven

‘Coming in here, it’s literally been a life saver’

These are the words of a visitor to one of the Safe Havens that are currently operating around Surrey, and which are proving to be a lifeline to many people suffering from mental health issues.

I

n our complex society with pressures of all kinds coming at us from every direction the need for adequate mental health care is increasing at an alarming rate.

The NHS with its resources stretched to breaking point is struggling to cope in many areas and waiting times for treatment are often unacceptably long, exacerbating patients’ issues and distress.

Often urgent help is needed and cannot be adequately provided by an A& E Department.

Thankfully, due to the work of the ‘Safe Havens’ project this help is now available year-round in Redhill, between 6.00pm-11.00pm, a time when many other health providers are closed.

Run in partnership with Surrey and Borders Mental Health Trust, charities Richmond Fellowship and Reigate Stepping Stones run a Safe Haven at the Wingfield Resource Centre in Redhill.

Following a pilot scheme in March 2016, demands for its services shows no sign of stopping - with other venues in Epsom, Guildford, Aldershot, Woking and Camberley, the Redhill project provides a place for anyone.

Here, help can be accessed from experienced professionals who are fully equipped to deal with mental health issues and who can guide people to the best possible help/agencies for their particular situation.

Visitors can understand and empathise over a cuppa’ - the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, there is no pressure to talk or divulge anything unless the client is willing to, conversations are at their own pace.

No appointment is needed and there is no charge, anyone can drop in during opening hours.

The service is also available to carers who may need support and advice on how to best help those in their care.

Telephone assistance from other sources is beneficial of course, but there is nothing quite like being able to speak to someone face to face to make a real connection.

When chatting to people in person the advisors are better able to discern their needs and situation, and the client has a more tangible experience to which they can relate.

Doing our bit for a local good cause!

Continuing our year of tenth birthday celebrations, this month we’re remembering how since 2006 we’ve been doing our bit for a local good cause!

ntegral to what we do at RH Uncovered is the local community and how we can best support it and no better way for us to demonstrate this is our commitment to local charities and good causes.

Most recently, in November a team from RH Uncovered took part in the Santas vs Elves Fun Run at Tilgate Park, Crawley for St Catherine’s Hospice to raise much needed money for the organisation.

The team of employees and their families had great fun dressed as either Santa or an elf and at the same time did it for a good cause so important to many families across our distribution area.

This is just one example of our charity-giving, in the past our Managing Director Matthew has taken part in a superhero-themed abseil and staff, past and present have done all manner of fundingraising!

Flatley’s legendary Lord of the Dance comes to Brighton Following the phenomenal success of its 2015 UK tour, Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games show is returning to the Brighton Centre next month to wow the crowds!

unning from Friday, February 10 – Sunday, February 12 Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games continues to thrill audiences around the world – recent venues include Brussels and Prague.

The stage show offers an intoxicating mix of dance and music that fuses the traditional with the contemporary in a classic tale that showcases an exceptionally talented young cast of performers.

Celebrating 20 years since the debut of the show Lord of the Dance, Flatley’s UK tour will present his protégés James Keegan, Morgan Comer and Matthew Smith in the role of the Lord of the Dance.

The show is produced, choreographed and directed by the Chicago-born Irish dance legend Michael Flatley who found huge fame across the UK and globally in the Irish dance show Riverdance.

In 1994 Flatley changed the art of Irish dance forever with

his breath-taking creation of Riverdance – a high energy take on a centuries-old cultural icon that would find fans as far afield as Australia.

The show first made the stage as an interval act at the Eurovision Song Contest being staged in Dublin almost 23-years-ago, but it soon proved popular enough to become a full-length show.

As well as Flatley, the show featured Irish dancing champion Jean Butler, going on to visit more than 450 venues worldwide and be seen by more than 25 million people and win numerous awards.

Flatley went on to create Lord of the Dance in Dublin in 1996, and it has since become synonymous with spectacular artistry and grand scale productions which mesmerise audiences in attendance.

With all the precision and thrills of the original, Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games features new staging, cutting edge technology, new costumes, choreography and world champion acrobats.

Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games premiered at the Palladium Theatre in London’s West End in 2014 before moving to the Dominion Theatre in 2015 as well as other UK venues.

The show has now gone on to Broadway in New York, and it was in the theatre district that Flatley opened a section of the city’s famous 42nd Street Flatley Way in his and the show’s honour.

Flatley embarked on his final tour in 2016, before suitably for the man associated with all things Irish performing on stage one last time in Caesar’s Colosseum in Las Vegas on St Patrick’s Day last year.

Flatley’s plan to make Brighton rock will again be a truly visual display of upper body movement and edgy rhythm patterns – for 2017 the show features new elements for a new audience.

New music is composed by Gerard Fahy, combining the best of tradition with all the excitement of new music and 40 of the world’s most outstanding young performers all directed

by Michael Flatley.

PET CARE Itchy Skin? Ear infections? Redness?

All Signs Your Beloved Pet Could Have An Allergy We all know us humans can suffer from allergies when it comes to our furry friends but what about when our pets are suffering?

ere’s all you need to know to help your pooch or puss combat their allergies, which can cause them so much discomfort.

How do I know if my pet has an allergy?

When we have allergies; it can be easy to spot. We may have sickness, dry itchy skin or generally feel out of sorts but whilst we can speak up to friends, family and our doctors to get a diagnosis, our four legged friends, sadly can’t. This means that as pet owners we need to look out for signs that our furry pals may be suffering.

Just like us; the main types of allergies that affect our pets are food and environmental allergies (the latter including seasonal itches and sniffles). The main sign that your pet could be suffering is itchy skin. So, if your furry friend is scratching more than usual, biting parts of their body or rubbing themselves against anything they possibly can to relieve the itch, chances are they are suffering from an allergy. If left untreated, this can lead to inflamed, red, raw skin, along with fur loss, sores, scabbing and become a life-long problem.

Another symptom to look out for is ear issues.

This is especially common in dogs. Ear canals become itchy and inflamed, as a response to allergies, and bacteria can develop and grow. If your ‘paw-ly’ pet has an infection, there may be an odour and discharge.

Sound familiar? Check if they are scratching their ears,

‘Pawfect’ tips for being allergy-free Now you know what to be checking for, how can you ensure your pet’s pesky allergies are kept under control?

• Give your pet regular baths and foot soaks Not just TLC treatments, baths and soaks can soothe the skin and also remove allergens that your pet may bring into your home.

• Clean and be chemical-free Vacuum and keep floors and their bedding areas clean (using non-toxic cleaners) to prevent allergies from starting and/or spreading.

• Have regular vet check-ups There’s a reason vets recommend seeing your pet regularly; to make sure they stay healthy!

Don’t forget to take them for a trip to keep them in tip-top condition.

The last symptom to look for is redness.

Feathered Friends

Looking after garden birds this winter For many of us, watching garden birds play in the winter morning’s dew is a cute sight but the romantic image doesn’t come without us playing our part to help our feathered friends out.

atural food sources are in short supply, the weather is colder, and, with it being colder, they need extra food to keep their energy levels up to stay warm. This is where we can all help, by following a few simple tips – we will also be able to enjoy watching (happy) garden birds at play this winter.

Do Offer them a variety of food, especially fatty food high in protein, fat balls are a good choice – they can contain lard or beef suet giving our feather friends plenty of energy in the cold months.

These can be purchased from most garden centres or large stores or why not try making your own at home? This can be a fun activity that you can enjoy doing with your children or grandchildren.

However, do not use chicken, turkey or vegetable fat as these fats can be transferred onto the birds feathers during preening, clogging feathers and hindering flight.

Don’t Feed garden birds bread, especially white bread, it will not give them the energy they require to survive and it is likely to bloat them, making them feel full so they no longer look for quality food.

Avoid milk too, which can upset their tummies and make them ill as can mouldy or stale food. Salty food should be avoided as it can dehydrate and desiccated coconut can swell in birds’ stomachs.

Do Feed on a regular basis, birds rely on it – pick a time each day you will be free to top up those feeders, then your birds won’t waste precious energy visiting and hunting for food.

Don’t Use plastic net feeders, the plastic nets around fat balls for example, can be dangerous for birds - they can get tangled up.

Most garden centres offer wire cages at little cost to you.

Do Think about bird planting like us, birds look for shelter to keep themselves warm.

Evergreens are a good source of shelter and will offer them some comfort in the cold weather so think about shelter.

Taxing Times

It has been a couple of years since the way that cars are taxed changed but many people are still struggling to get to grips with the new system.

The previous method of checking to see if your vehicle was taxed by taking a quick glance at the corner of the windscreen was a simple one but no more.

t worked well for more than 90 years but times, they are a-changing, and much like most things in life, the internet has replaced this task.

Since the scrapping of the paper disc, a large number of cars have been clamped or towed because of confusion over whether or not a car is taxed.

Gone are the days where you could sell a car with twelve months tax - these days, when you buy a car it automatically becomes un-taxed.

For some, it’s a cunning way of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) getting more revenue. If you sell a car mid-month not only have you paid tax for that month, it is now

the responsibility of the new owner of the vehicle to pay tax from the start of that month.

To their credit, the DVSA send out reminders - they have to, after making the visual reminder in the windscreen redundant.

The knock on effect that we, as an MOT testing station are seeing is that some motorists are speeding past their MOT due-date.

We’ve seen cars that are eight or nine months out of date because the owner is used to the MOT at the

same time as they taxed the car.

Fortunately we, like many garages, offer a free MOT-reminder service that will send you a reminder to your phone a month before it’s due.

Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) will also do this, but charge you for this service.

For taxing the vehicle, a note on a calendar or a well-placed sticker in the car will help you avoid any nasty fines.
