Smart Storage Ideas for Every Room inding enough storage room in a home can be a bit like looking for hen’s teeth, but with a little imagination (and a bit of de-cluttering as you go!) unused space in your home can be utilised to ensure that everything has a place.

Hallway Hallways are notorious dumping grounds! When entering the house we all shed something, be it shoes, bags, coats or scarves. Place a coat stand in a corner or put pegs up on the wall so that coats, bags, hats and umbrellas have a vertical hanging space. Invest in a shoe rack – many of these are now made with drop-down drawers or doors to hide the shoes within and double up as seats or tables.

Lounge Utilise that under-stairs storage. If you already have a cupboard built under the stairs, put up some shelves and hooks so that everything can be neatly stored rather than thrown in a heap! Or why not put up a shelving area under the stairs to house ornaments, photos and act as a bookcase too.

Free up space in your cabinets by placing cup hooks under your units to display your pretty mugs. Use tension rods in your units to separate plates, chopping boards and other items and make them easily accessible whenever you need them. Decanting store cupboard ingredients such as lentils, dried fruit and nuts into pretty containers and arranging them on shelves will free up space in your cupboards and make a pretty and practical display. Fed up with tons of plastic carrier bags shoved in a drawer or cupboard? Simply place them in a pretty tissue box and pull one out when needed.

Invest in some vacuum pack bags for last season’s clothes, suck out the air with your vacuum and store under your bed; you will be amazed at how much you can store in a small space! Don’t use a separate hanger for each pair of trousers in your wardrobe – invest in some trouser hangers which hold up to half a dozen pairs each. Vintage suitcases placed on the top of a wardrobe also provide practical storage space and a decorative touch.

Bathroom Sadly medicine cupboards don’t come in wardrobe size,

so this is often the most difficult room to find storage solutions for. But if you can’t hide things away why not make a feature of them? Pick up some baskets from your local hardware store and line them with material to tone in with your bathroom decor and display your lotions and potions in them. A neat linen cupboard tip is to keep all the parts of a bed set inside one of the pillow cases which will ensure you have everything you need in one place when making up a bed. Finally if you have just too much to store in the bathroom, consider putting a shelf above the door to provide additional storage for bathroom staples, linens or fresh towels.

Home Office Files, tubs and baskets come into their own in the home office for both equipment and paperwork. Using a blanket box as additional seating or workspace is a good idea as this can double up as extra storage space for items you don’t need on a day to day basis. If you want to rid yourself of files of paperwork, simply scan documents and save them on your computer or use a file storage area on the internet such as which will guarantee that even if your computer dies your files will live on.

Pre-Holiday Plumbing Checks You’ve booked your summer holiday; your bags are packed, you’ve checked your home is protected from burglars, you’ve even remembered your passport – but have you thought of everything to make sure your trip is hassle free? Believe it or not most insurance companies will confirm that the majority of claims come from flooding in the home, and many of these claims follow periods when homeowners have been away for a period of time. Before you jet off it is worth taking a few minutes to make

sure you won’t return to a soggy mess, or worse a flood damaged home. The easiest way to prevent flooding in your home is to turn off the water. Even if it is only a weekend trip, take a moment to shut off your plumbing at the main stopcock. When getting your suitcases down from the loft, check that there are no leaks or problems with your water tank. Check the tank in your airing cupboard. In the kitchen, check under the sink for any signs of water leakage. Check your hoses on your

washing machine and dishwasher too. If you aren’t comfortable with doing this yourself, or if after checking you think something may be wrong, call for backup. Have an experienced local plumber come out and take a look at everything. He can check for leaks and make sure nothing is broken or running while you’re away. Tim Burberry is a fully qualified Plumbing and Heating Engineer, registered with both Gas Safe (305867)and Oftec.

10 Tips for a Glorious Garden July - September GARDENS

Summer is well and truly here. By now your garden will be looking its tip top best, with roses and sweet peas filling the air with their heady scent. The longer evenings will mean you have plenty of time to relax and enjoy al fresco dining in your garden. You won’t be able to rest on your laurels though as there is still a lot to do to ensure your garden continues to look its fabulous best. Here are our 10 tips for each month:

Keeping your garden looking gorgeous will mean you still have lots of jobs to do in July, but your hard work will be paying off with beautiful blooms to cut and display, and lots of fresh salad leaves, cucumbers, and tomatoes, will be ready for your table. • Make sure new and young plants are well watered • Containers will need regular watering too; early morning or in the cool of the evening is best • Plant autumn flowering bulbs • Pinch out runner beans, as soon as they reach the top of their canes • Deadhead annuals, perennials and roses to encourage new blooms • Sow biennials, such as Sweet Williams, wallflowers and foxgloves, ready to flower next year • Check plants for signs of pest and disease • Sow salad, spring cabbage and winter spinach in the vegetable garden • Make sure your greenhouse is well ventilated

August is traditionally a holiday month, but whether you are staying at home or jetting off for a break your garden will still need constant watering in the summer heat, especially for your containers and vegetables. Be sure to conserve as much water as you can too, saucers under pots help to keep plants moist and save water. • Keep ponds and water features topped up • Collect seed from your favourite plants

This month is all about gathering in the harvest, preparing for next year and watching the autumn colours develop in your garden. With winter approaching the mornings will be chillier and especially cold nights may even deliver a light frost. Use this month to think about next year by planting new trees, shrubs climbers and perennials. • Net ponds to keep out falling leaves

• Harvest vegetables as they become ready

• Sow or turf new lawns and scarify and aerate established ones

• Prune rambling and climbing roses after flowering

• Take hardwood cuttings from roses

• Trim lavender as soon as the flowerheads have gone over

• Plant spring-flowering bulbs

• Tidy the greenhouse and clean out cold frames, before you start to bring plants undercover next month.

• Lift tender plants and bring them under cover, or take cuttings • Clean the greenhouse in preparation for winter

• Keep on weeding. Weeds take up valuable moisture from the ground!

• Sow hardy annuals to flower next year

• Plant out spring flowering bulbs

• Take the opportunity to force hyacinths and other bulbs for Christmas

• Trim hedges • Cut and dry herbs for winter use

• Plant onion sets and new strawberry plants, and sow spring cabbages

GARDENS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed! Aphids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental Conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly and Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe die back. The current troublesome aphid is the Cypress Aphid which predominantly affects Conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread.

Local Swimming Teacher opens her own pool in Turners Hill A study by the ASA and Kelloggs found that last summer 200,000 primary school children left school unable to swim. Yet Swim Schools still find it extremely difficult to find pool time anywhere in the county and there are big waiting lists for parents to be able to get lessons for their children.

The heated pool is 8.2m x3.9m x1.3m deep. “It is very exciting to be able to offer the local community and primary schools the facility for swimming lessons. I feel that to really teach young people to swim and get over their fear of water you need small classes. I have really small classes – only three in a class.”

With all these odds stacked against her Sarah Barnfield, Owner of Puffins Swim School, decided the only route forward was to build her own pool. She found a unit in Turners Hill applied for planning and in April this year opened her pool.

Sarah runs parent-and-baby and parent-andtoddler classes as well as teaching children on their own. The age range of her pupils is four months to 10 years. When swimmers reach eight or nine, she passes the best ones on to swimming clubs.

Stay Safe with

Sensible Sunbathing ow that the weather is warming up, and the days are growing longer, many of us will be looking forward to spending more time if not at the beach, then certainly out in the sun. It is vitally important though to make sure that whilst having fun in the sun, we do so without causing damage to our skin or our health. Too much sun can be dangerous and can lead to serious conditions such as dehydration, sunburn, and in extreme cases, skin cancer (malignant melanoma). Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and can be caused by too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays and getting sunburnt as a child may increase your risk of developing skin cancer later in life. It’s important therefore to protect your skin when out and about. Even if the sun doesn’t feel particularly hot, its rays can still cause damage.

Top tips for sun safety:

 Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm, as this is the time of the day where the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

 Cover up with a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses  Apply sunscreen liberally half an hour before exposure to the sun and re-apply every two hours or immediately after being in water  Use a sunscreen of at least factor 15, and make sure you don’t burn  Take extra care with babies and children. Keep them out of direct sunlight, apply sunscreen regularly and make sure drinking water is readily available  People with fair skin, red or fair hair, lots of moles or freckles or a family history of skin cancer should take extra care.

 If you notice changes in any moles or freckles you have, visit your GP. These changes can be an early sign of skin cancer, so get them checked out as early as possible.  On the bright side, sunlight helps your body to absorb vitamin D – essential for healthy bone growth. Moderate exposure to the sun has also proven to be excellent in helping to heal certain skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, eczema and fungal infections of the skin. Getting out in the sun is good for your mood. Who doesn’t feel better when they venture out and feel the warm rays of the sun on their skin on an early summer’s morning? It is all about moderation.

Lights: These are essential not only for riding after dark but also in more inclement weather to ensure that you can be easily seen. Clothing: As long as you wear something comfortable, lightweight and breathable it’s not necessary to have specialist clothing for cycling, although bright colours and/or a high visibility vest will always help with making you more visible to motorists. If you are going to be a serious cyclist then it’s worth checking out the specialist clothing available. A word of warning though - it is generally remarkably close fitting so you may want to wait until your new hobby has helped you shed a few of those extra pounds before kitting yourself out!

Pets for Children - Rabbits abbits are very sociable animals and make for excellent pets for children. Their needs are very basic – a warm, clean hutch big enough for them to lie down and stretch out comfortably and tall enough for them to be able to stand on their hind legs is essential. A good size hutch is 6’ x 2’ x 2’.

Rabbits shouldn’t be kept without a companion, the best pairing being neutered male and a neutered female. Ignore this advice at your peril – rabbits are capable of breeding from between 4 and 5 months and their young are often difficult to home. Don’t keep rabbits with guinea pigs, as they can bully them.

The hutch should be cleaned every day making sure that you remove droppings and uneaten food and that your pet has clean bedding, of straw and hay, to keep them warm. A sturdy run is also imperative in order that they get enough exercise.

Make sure you handle your rabbit from a very young age to make sure they will be comfortable being held as an adult.

Always have your rabbits neutered and take your vets advice regarding vaccinations.

Frequent brushing will ensure that their coat remains healthy and free of mats. It is important to check your rabbit every day for signs of illness and in the summer to check under their tail for signs of maggots. Feed your rabbit fresh greens and a handful of commercial feed each day, but avoid sugary treats including fruit, which should only be given occasionally.

Community News Lingfield Arts Summer Exhibition

Help East Grinstead Win Gold This Year!

Dormansland Carnival

A firm fixture in Lingfield’s summer calendar is the highly anticipated Lingfield Art Show. Last year the exhibition was visited by over 1000 people, viewing up to 500 exhibits including paintings, ceramics and sculpture.

The prestigious RHS Britain in Bloom judges will be visiting East Grinstead on Wednesday 17th July 2013, so grab your shovel and let’s get planting to get our town gold!

“Shake off your worries, rattle your bones and get yourself down to Dormansland Carnival on Saturday 13th July,” says the Carnival committee’s Dorothy Howson. “The theme this year is ‘Park Life’ and we certainly hope to put some life into the park on the day! The proceedings will start with a procession of floats and walking pageants which will leave the Green in New Farthingdale at 1pm, led by the band of TS Swiftsure.”

The event continues to be planned and organised solely by volunteers and is run as a not for profit event. New for this year: The committee are purchasing a painting by Isobel Chapman, a well known local artist and are going to raffle it throughout the week of the exhibition to raise funds.

“Please continue to support us this year by coming along to view and enjoy the wonderful talent of our local artists,” June Ragsdale a local artist and committee member says. “It’s a great opportunity to purchase an original, affordable piece of art.” The Lingfield Art Exhibition 2013 is held at the Lingfield & Dormansland Community Centre, High St, Lingfield, RH76AB. Website: Dates: Tue 16th - Sun 21st July Tue - Sat: 10.00am until 6.00pm Sun: 10.00am until 4.00pm

“We would like to ask every resident and business in East Grinstead to help do their bit so we can win our first GOLD award this year,” Samantha Baldery from East Grinstead In Bloom’s committee says. “In the weeks running up to the visit we want to encourage residents and businesses to get their front gardens and premises looking tidy and seasonal. Help clear up any rubbish, report graffiti and fly-tipping to the council to be cleared away or maybe work with neighbours to clear communal areas and get them looking as neat and tidy as possible” “From the start of July, we’ll be inspecting every front garden and business premises in East Grinstead looking for winners in these categories: Best Front Garden, Best Landscaped Garden, Best Commercial Premises and Best Street,” Samantha continues. To nominate a great looking garden, or require further information please contact: or call Samantha: 01342 322322. East Grinstead in Bloom Photography Competition. For details and competition rules, please visit our website at:

“In addition to ‘slacklining’ displays (the most fun you can have with a piece of elastic, come and try it!) we will have Punch & Judy shows, races and a range of rides, slides and other attractions for the children. For bigger kids, there are beer and Pimms tents and a tug-of-war competition, so start getting your team ready!” Dorothy continues. “For those favoring lower impact activities, Rob Cushman will be providing musical entertainment near the WI tent, and the Flower Festival will be in full bloom in St John's church next door. Parks are not just for people – so groom your dogs, and enter our fun dog show.” “The carnival will continue into the evening with music from two local bands; Sweet Revenge and Euphoria and as it’s on a Saturday, there’s no reason not to party on!”

Calling All Keen Cyclists: Forest Row Bike Club Needs You! If you’ve been meaning to get on your bike more, now’s your chance as Forest Row Bike Club are looking for new faces with pedal power!

“There are usually two groups on Sundays a short ride of around 30 miles, and a longer ride of 40 - 50 miles,” keen rider Kate continues.

“We're a diverse group, with a wide mix of ages, abilities and hair-styles,” says the group’s spokesperson, Kate Chadwick. “What unites us is the enjoyment of cycling, fresh air and tea, and the hatred of steep hills. Of which there are a few…”

“We try to vary the route and keep to country lanes and established cycle tracks as far possible. The emphasis is on a social day out, at a pace that is comfortable for all.”

“We meet on Sundays at 9:30 and on Wednesdays at 9:00 in the Lower Square in Forest Row (by Java & Jazz). New faces are always welcome; just bring your bike!”

“We’re a very sociable bunch and are looking forward to our annual Treasure Hunt later this month (a ride and a BBQ!) So please do get in touch if you’d like to come along! We'd love some new members to join us no matter what age or ability.” Kate says, For more information visit:

“For those of you who’d like to take things a little easier, why not join our ‘Meanderers’ meeting at 10am (Sundays) and settle for fewer miles at a genteel pace, it’s a great way of getting air into your lungs!”

Exciting activities in East Grinstead It’s getting even busier as the summer gathers pace. The season’s big outdoor events are all coming thick and fast now with the East Grinstead Midsummer market arriving on Saturday 20th of July as the main part of London Road plays host to stalls of all sorts, including the Continental Market and amusements for the kids. It’s a brilliant day attracting lots of families to spend the day in town. Then we are continuing with our outdoor events under the Sunday Afternoon in the Park series, being held in the grounds of East Court mansion.

This time it’s the turn of the Concert Band of the Royal Marines who will be playing on Sunday 7th of July. We’re really lucky to have this as a headline act for the series and the performance will take place from 3 to 6 pm. These are FREE events and catering facilities will be available as well as paid seating space in the VIP arena if you wish to upgrade. You should also make a note of the two following dates of 4th August with a special kids Magic Show and on 18th of August we are promised a visit by Elvis himself!

Then there’s the big climax on Sunday 1st September when the Jive Aces bring the series to it’s grand finale. More on these in next month’s magazine, but the Concert Band of the Royal Marines looks good for July. Don’t forget the Bluebell trains are now leaving on a regular basis from East Grinstead station, if you haven’t been yet then why not come to one of their special events this month? Lots for you if you need to know more here at the Tourist Desk on 01342 410121 Enjoy the summer!

Some kind words from Maria Hains... As many of you will know we have been supporting Maria and her fundraising events for Crawley Hospital for the last 6 years and therefore we were delighted to receive these lovely words from her recently… “The staff at RH Uncovered magazines have done so much to assist me with my passion for fundraising for Crawley Hospital since their launch back in 2006. I am always amazed at the amount of visitors who attend our fundraisers that have seen details of us in the What’s on Page of the RH Uncovered magazine. Our “As Good As New Sales” are always well supported by RH Uncovered readers, as are all of the other events that we run to raise funds. I am sure that my continued success from being featured in RH Uncovered is because so many people have your magazines delivered to their homes each and every month. Like me they love all of the interesting articles and the wealth of supportive community information that you provide for free. That is what community is really all about! I am also very grateful that RH Uncovered magazines also gave me the money that allowed me to buy and keep my Olympic Torch when I was lucky enough to be part of the Olympic Relay Team. Well done RH Uncovered, you are a true community magazine, run by lovely people and one that cares about our local area and people – I just wanted to let you know how much the magazine, and your help for the local community is very much appreciated”
