Before the 2015 campaign, Weston Ranch had endured seven consecutive losing seasons, averaging fewer than four wins per year. In 2015 the Cougars racked up three wins to start the year and finished at an even 5-5 for the best season in nearly a decade, but missed the playoffs by a game. Flush with numbers, size and a changing culture, Weston Ranch looks to turn the corner this year. “Over the summer we have had a consistent number of 100-plus players in our program,” Cougars coach Seth Davis said. “The growth of the program from the success in the class room is why we are gaining success on the field. Our overall program GPA is up to 3.2 overall from 2.3 my first season.” And then there is the size – and lots of it. Marsalys Austin (6-foot-3, 240 pounds), Jacob Tatupu (6-2, 255), Chandler Brock (6-2, 260), Cordiallyo Pollard (6-2, 255) Robert Wright (6-2, 310) and Javier Aros (6-2, 280) will put up a pretty big wall for the skill players. Albert White (6-0, 210), Nick Patterson (6-0, 195) Bryant Bowen (5-11, 205) and Andrew Farley (6-0 220) look to comprise a formidable linebacker corps with Patterson and White also playing tight end and Bowen and Farley starting at running back. Elijah Harper (6-3, 185), James Walker (5-8, 150), Malik VegaTatum (6-0, 165), Cori Floyd (5-10, 175) and Kenny Cha (5-4, 130) will fill the skill positions for Weston Ranch and Brandon Brown (6-2, 160) will be the quarterback. The Cougars will be running the West Coast offense with a 5-3 defense. According to Davis, his team’s strengths are its depth and chemistry and its weakness is mental discipline. “We did what we were supposed to over the summer,” Davis said. “But there is still room for improvement. I feel excited and motivated. “We are young at some key positions, but overall I think we are headed in the right direction.” Come in NOW for Weston Ranch opened play last Friday at Ceres and begins playhaircut at 7:30 p.m. and a league great atbegins the Valley Oak League campaign against four-time a league great price. defending (2014 and 2015 in the VOL) and four-time defending state champion Central Catholic of Modesto at home on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
