The 2015 season was one of firsts for Lathrop High – the first season with more than three wins, the first winning season and an inaugural appearance in the playoffs. In fact, the six wins in the 6-5 campaign was one less win then in all of the six-year history of the program. According to second-year coach Joe Pirillo, it was the team buying into a new system last season that helped turn things around. “The kids bought into something last year,” Pirillo said. “They worked hard and wanted success.” The summer turnout swelled to triple digits. “We were up to 110 this year in the program from 90 last year,” Pirillo said. “We continued to work hard in our seven-onseven games. We are building on last year and coming together.” The Spartans boast 10 senior starters on defense but just five returning starters on offense. Stepping in to call signals for

Lathrop will be junior Keonnee Linnell (5 foot, 10 inches, 153 pounds). “Keonnee is progressing really well,” Pirillo said. “He is learning on the fly and we have tweaked the offense for him.” Linnell will have some beef in front of him, including Placido Esparza (5-11, 235), Luis Rivas (6-2, 230) and Mario Ragosa (6-0, 230) with Idowu Olaleye (6-2, 200) at tight end. Returners R.J. Tisdell (5-8, 170) and Tremayne Willis Jr. (5-10, 170) will be lining up behind Linnell in the Multiple I offense. Lathop is stepping up its non-league schedule. West of Tracy – which handed the Spartans a stinging last-second loss in 2015 – remains. But gone are wins from last year in Liberty Ranch and Ripon. Stepping in are small-school powerhouse Hilmar and perennial Division I power Franklin of Elk Grove. “The kids are going to play some talented guys,” Pirillo said. “Not cupcakes. “It makes no sense to try and pad your stats. Strength of schedule makes a difference when it comes to making it into the playoffs.”
