PANAHAR 3375 BUFORD HIGHWAY NE ATLANTA, GA 30329 (404) 633-6655 PANAHARBANGLADESHI.COM CO-OWNER AND EXECUTIVE CHEF: MOHAMMED KHURSHID ALAM CO-OWNER: MUSTAFA MAHMUD The year 2001 welcomed the first Bangladeshi restaurant to Atlanta, an unassuming spot hidden in an unremarkable strip mall on Buford Highway. For as modest as it looks, the food, so bright and flavorful, is proportionately extraordinary. Chef and co-owner Mohammed Khurshid Alam, who doesn’t use any curry powder and makes all condiments, spice blends, cheese, and yogurt in-house, turns out authentic dishes from his native Noakhali that are significantly less oily and spicy than the Indian flavors you’re likely used to. Though the chicken tikka moshala is most popular, you’ll be pleasantly surprised if you order the vegetarian-friendly halim soup or the lamb korma cooked in a turmeric-laced cream sauce with chopped almonds and raisins. Or the fish dopiazza—fillets are sautéed in a black-mustard-heavy sauce draped with grilled onions and cilantro. Don’t forget to BYOB—Panahar doesn’t even charge a corkage fee.
