They said it couldn’t be done. We didn’t listen.
We’ve done hard things before, we do them all the time. For most cancer patients, the usual options are surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. So we’re working on ways to get the immune system to deploy billions of cancer-killing cells and help more patients survive. When some people experienced mysterious COVID symptoms and had nowhere to go, our team created the first Center for Post-COVID Care. It wasn’t that long ago we had to open up your whole chest for heart surgery. Now we’re pioneering a bypass that goes through a few tiny incisions. With this surgery, we can get you back on your feet in weeks instead of months. So if anyone ever tells you there’s no other way—don’t listen.

BEHIND THE SCENES
I always take great pleasure in writing these letters, because I could not be more proud of the incredible content within each issue of our magazine. This issue is the truly product of how closely I work with Lauren Schuster, the editor of Mann About Town, to make sure we always have the best possible person for our cover. Nobody does more research to select our cover story than us, and there’s no question that Chagit Leviev is our most special story ever. Chagit Leviev is the president and CEO of Leviev Group USA, the United States arm of the Leviev Group of Companies, which was founded by her father, businessman and philanthropist Lev Leviev. The company is involved in many different industries, including real estate, mining, energy, technology, and perhaps most famously, diamonds and jewelry. On top of her intelligence and business savy, she is also a wife and mother of four, and a dedicated philanthropist like her father. The list of her many talents can go on and on. In our opinion, Chagit Leviev represents a woman who is dynamic and has all the qualities that make her a perfect fit for our magazine. Her many accomplishments, and most importantly her beliefs in diversity and equality, really spoke to Lauren and myself, and we think you will all be excited to read more about her. I am privileged and honored to have a woman like Chagit grace our cover. The rest of the magazine is also full of incredible, cuttingedge content, including coverage of the recent record-setting charity run completed by my personal friend Oz Pearlman, who my wife and I have known and supported for many years. Each section keeps getting better and better as we continue to grow and form connections that allow us to bring you even more of the best luxury lifestyle content out there. We are also excited to be expanding our coverage in the Hamptons and beyond with the help of the talented women at Brandsway Creative. Their hardworking and dedicated team has been a wonderful partner for us in our effort to always provide our readers with new and interesting content. As always, thank you for sticking with us, and we hope you enjoy the culmination of our efforts.

editor’s letter Welcome back to Mann About Town! It is with great excitement that I introduce you all to our May/June 2022 issue. As the weather gets warmer and we all prepare for brighter days ahead, we have rounded up the hottest trends in dining, shopping, fashion, art, real estate and more this summer. Our cover story this issue tells the story of Chagit Leviev, the president & CEO of Leviev Group USA. Many of you may be familiar with her and her family because of the Tinder Swindler scandal, wherein a man calling himself Simon Leviev pretended to be the son of Chagit’s father, Lev Leviev in order to scam a multitude of women and various corportations out of millions of dollars. Chagit bravely led her family’s response to the scandal and is now working with the Tinder Swindler’s victims to help them recover from the enormous losses they faced. But Chagit has much more to her story than this: she is also an incredible businesswoman who speaks six languages, a wife and mother to four children and a philanthropist dedicated to Jewish education and women’s empowerment. I hope you all enjoy learning about her as much as I did. In this issue, we also have a number of other amazing features, including The White Room Gallery’s summer preview, fabulous French and Italian vacation spots, Oz Pearlman’s record-breaking Central Park charity run and so much more! At Mann About Town, we are always looking for ways to expand and provide our readership with content we know you will love, and I look forward to continuing to bring you all the cutting edge luxury lifestyle content you enjoy.

athieu Rosinsky hosted an extravagant night to celebrate the opening of his newly renovated Flamingo Building, located at 1921 S. Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he introduced the young emerging artist Bree Elle Heyniger during the vernissage of her inaugural series, “Art et La Femme.” International event empresario Bruce Sutka produced the lavish evening and the results were totally Oscar-worthy!
Flamingo Building exterior
Heyniger’s work was such a success that she sold seven paintings and a sculpture called “Girl, Interrupted,” made out of ceramic and mixed media. “I am beyond thankful to this incredibly supportive community and to the team that made this event a dream come true,” said Heyniger. “I’m so excited to see what’s in store for the future.” Over 400 guests, greeted with flutes of Veuve Clicquot, marveled at the “living lamp,” a majestic mime, bedazzled in silver sequins. Guests made their way through the gallery-like office spaces where each room highlighted works of the young artist. Guests were also invited to visit Rosinsky’s private office space, where a magnificent hand-made wood wall unit, an exquisitely curated private art collection and a beautiful single-piece marble office table served as a third bar. The energetic pièce de résistance was the back gallery, where DJ Adam Lipson and DJ Electra got the evening’s groove going strong against the backdrop of an ice sculpture in the shape of a femme, which served as a luge for Casamigos Palomas. “It’s the first gallery opening I’ve been to in this area that was able to capture that Los Angeles and New York vibe,” said Arvo Katajisto. “The crowd was eclectic, and the energy was high-wattage.”

enowned business entrepreneurs and savvy art collectors John Paulson and Jane Holzer (a.k.a. Baby Jane Holzer) co-hosted the private preview of Christophe von Hohenberg’s “The White Album of the Hamptons” at Cavalier Galleries’ second Palm Beach location, at 292 South County Rd. The by-invitation reception welcomed over 150 prominent collectors, several of whom flew in from Europe and New York for the special event. Kameron Ramirez and Nick Hissom, co-founders of Aktion Art, bid on “Group of Surfers,” the photograph generously donated by the artist to benefit the Duke Nelson Memorial Scholarship, an endowment offered by Dreyfoos School of the Arts Foundation, bringing the total amount raised to over $6,500. “Aktion art loves supporting local fellow galleries. A cause that helps local students of the arts resonates with me,” said Ramirez. “Christophe’s work is beautiful. I enjoyed meeting him and hearing about how he photographed Andy Warhol’s memorial service.” “We are beyond excited to have raised enough money to offer all 4 scholarship finalists an endowment fund,” said Maribel Alvarez, co-founder of the Duke Nelson Memorial Scholarship. “I am truly grateful to Christophe, Ron Cavalier, Kameron Ramirez, Jane Holzer and John Paulson for this opportunity.” Other notables attending the event included Chris Snyder, director of development at Dreyfoos School of the Arts, Hilary and Wilbur Ross, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Priscilla Rattazzi, Eleanora Kennedy, Anthony Hayden-Guest, Cecile and Alain de Grelle, Andy Boszardt, Kara Ross, Dale Coudert, Manuel Balbotin, James Coleman, Kim Heirston, Dianne de la Bégassière, Scott Snyder, Rosa and Carlo Corsini, Yaz and Valentin Hernandez, Christiane Seitz, Felicia Taylor, Lisa Kerkorian, Margaret and David Luce, Sonny Kotite, PJ Quick Pollack, Robert Riva, Carolina von Humboldt, Paola Bacchini Rosenshein and Elizabeth Fekkai. “We continue to enjoy representing Christophe and taking him to new heights. egine Traulsen and Bill Diamond hosted a Moroccan extravaganza at their Palm Beach home, transporting their delighted guests to a magical evening in Marrakesh. Over 130 guests dressed in traditional attire, or “white-tie Casablanca-style,” were greeted with champagne while posing with camels and belly dancers before making their way through the tented hallway to the main house and terrace. Riad-like nooks set the stage for the cocktail hour, where guests enjoyed delicious Moroccan amuse-bouches, catered by Thierry Isambert, before they were invited to experience the pièce de résistance: a magnificent Bedouin tent provided by Ali Baba, exquisitely decorated in true Moroccan style and adorned with copious flowers by Richard Grille Events. The lavish buffet featuring authentic Moroccan dishes offered an array of appetizers and eight main courses to choose from including chicken with olives and lemon confit, vegetable couscous, chicken pastilla, lamb tagine with prunes and peaches and traditional meatballs with tomato sauce. An upcoming Moroccan musical star, Othmane Bouchar led the Moroccan band which let festivities and guests keep up with lovely belly dancers throughout dinner. It was a memorable night. The hosts literally rocked the casbash!

Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary Wraps Fifth Edition With Notable Six and Seven Figure Sales from Over 90 Internationally Acclaimed Galleries and Artists Photo credit: Annie Watt
P
alm Beach Modern + Contemporary (PBM+C), presented by Art Miami, concluded its successful fifth edition opening with an exclusive invitation-only VIP Preview benefiting the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens (ANSG) at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Collectors were eager to return to South Florida’s premier winter art fair with an internationally acclaimed group of galleries and artists sponsored by luxury jeweler Yvel and Artsy. Prominent collectors, curators, art connoisseurs, interior designers, museum directors, architects and art world luminaries descended upon the fair throughout the weekend, while galleries reported notable six and seven figure sales of investment quality works including blue chip, modern and contemporary and post-war works. The VIP Preview evening kicked off with a special ribbon cutting with iconic photographer Harry Benson alongside Fair Director Nick Korniloff, Vice President of Marketing Pamela Cohen and the PBM+C Team in front of his exhibition, “Harry Benson: A Life of Legendary Photographs.” Shortly after, PBM+C honored Benson as the third recipient for the Lifetime Achievement Award in the VIP Lounge. Singer/songwriter Jon Bon Jovi, Gigi Benson, artist Bruce Helander, actor and artist Jordi Molla, American philanthropist and author Jean Shafiroff, philanthropists Jeffrey and Frances Fisher, CEO of Miami Children’s Museum Deborah Spiegelman, American financier John Paulson, art advisor Kim Heirston, designer Kara Ross, activist Eleanora Kennedy, Board Advisor for Brooklyn Museum Felicia Taylor and Executive Director of the Coral Gables Museum Dr. Elvis Fuentes were among the guests who attended the fair’s VIP Preview.

Notable artists, collectors and guests also attended, including Gino Miles, Dana Kleinman, Yigal Ozeri, Felton Weller, Helmut Koller, Elizabeth Fekkai, Karen Klopp and Jane Manus. Museum professionals, board of directors and patrons of local, national and international institutions came out in support of the fair including ANSG, Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach Society, Norton Museum of Art, The Square Downtown West Palm, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Miami Children’s Museum, Coral Gables Museum and Armory Art Center. Ninety internationally acclaimed galleries exhibited works from over 600 renowned artists such as Robert Motherwell, Kiyoshi Nakagami, Aboudia, Roy Lichtenstein, Lynn Chadwick, Kenneth Noland, Banksy, Alex Katz, Carlos Cruz-Diez, David Hockney, George Condo, Fernando Botero, Jean Arp, Manolo Valdés, Sam Francis, Henry Moore, Harry Benson, Anthony James, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Kenny Scharf, Damien Hirst and more. “Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary brought a week of art and luxury to the city of Palm Beach and a reconnection of international galleries and art collectors after two years. PBM+C has become an essential fair and cultural experience for all attendees through this year’s sales of contemporary, blue-chip artwork, emerging artists and more,” said Korniloff. For the fifth year, ANSG served as the fair’s VIP Preview benefactor, satellite venue and official cultural partner for the fair. ANSG commemorated the fair with a special exhibition, “Garden Exhibition,” with works from four artists repre-
sented by Long-Sharp Gallery including Patrick Hurst, Julian Wild, Tarik Currimbhoy and Jason Myers, on display through June 2022. “Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens is honored to have shared its fifth year of cultural partnership with Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary serving as the beneficiary of the opening evening and the satellite venue for the fair,” said Fisher, who is the chairwoman of ANSG. “PBM+C has been instrumental in elevating international visibility for the Gardens with world class art, artists in residence and innovative educational programming for our community and visitors.” Sales kicked off strong throughout the fair, with many galleries selling out of what they brought. “We enjoyed an exciting reception upon the fair’s return to the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach. Things really heated up over the weekend and we made numerous sales, including a pleasing number that were to new clients,” said Brian Balfour-Oatts, director of Archeus / Post-Modern. “The high level of knowledge among those clients was impressive and the sales totals exceeded those of Miami in December.” The fair was in close proximity to Palm Beach Island, which offers haute couture shopping, fine dining and entertainment and across the street from The Square — West Palm Beach’s newest urban oasis shopping with various food and beverage, retail, arts and cultural outlets. Both neighborhoods provided world-class destinations to appeal to locals and visitors. For more information, visit artpbfair.com.

The classic color that inspired this collection is Sigma Beauty’s best-selling New Mod Liquid Lipstick. The doe-foot applicator packs the perfect amount of nude mauve pigment into a single swipe, and the formula has a smooth, satin-matte finish that locks in moisture while providing all-day color payoff. The New Mod Eyeshadow Palette features 14 matte, shimmer and metallic shades in buildable, silky-smooth formulas. This palette is built to be universally flattering, with a wide variety of shades and finishes ready to create eye looks that complement every undertone, the company said. Both the New Mod Eyeshadow Palette and the New Mod Liquid Lipstick are a part of Sigma’s Clean Beauty Program, meaning they’re made with clean, safe ingredients and free of harsh chemicals. The Modern Glam Brush Set features five makeup brushes with a glittery soft pink finish inside a matching Beauty Bag. These brushes are made with SigmaTech synthetic fibers for an ultra-soft feel and luxe finish. The elite beauty tools are designed for all-around use, so the set can be used to create a full look without grabbing anything else. The Modern Glam Brush Set allows users to think ahead of trends and experiment with different types of application, formulas and more. “New Mod is a collection that capitalizes on Sigma’s fan-favorite New Mod liquid lipstick,” said Dr. Simone Xavier, co-founder and chief creative officer of Sigma Beauty. “Similar to previous collections inspired by beloved products, like our best-selling Cor-de-Rosa Blush Palette, we continue to expand our most universal colors into full collections. New Mod is the perfect mauve hue, and it is guaranteed to look absolutely gorgeous on any skin tone, regardless of undertone. This versatility inspired the creation of a universal mauve palette carefully curated to include perfect matte and shimmer shades to allow full looks from the lightest to the darkest skin tones. We made sure we include transition shades, highlighting shades, crease and lid shades that would be universally flattering. The result is a very inclusive and universal color story.” The Modern Glam Brush Set retails for $94, the New Mod Eyeshadow Palette retails for $49, and the classic New Mod Liquid Lipstick retails for $20. MANN ABOUT TOWN • MAY/JUNE 2022
ON THE UPSWING
What is GetMyBoat? GetMyBoat is the world’s largest marketplace for boat rentals and all types of bookable water experiences. Whether it is a catamaran in California or a kayak in Croatia, the company has over 150,000 water experiences in 184 countries that can all be booked on the go right from your phone! The Story Begins GetMyBoat began when serial entrepreneurs and co-founders Sascha Mornell and Rafael Collado were out on the water. They noticed all the boats sitting unused in dock slips at marinas. They asked themselves, “How can more people gain access to great boating experiences for less?” A few years later and with the emergence of the sharing economy, Mornell and Collado brought GetMyBoat to life. Founded initially as a boat rental marketplace, GetMyBoat has grown to offer every type of on-the-water experience, from whale watching tours and eco-kayaking trips to houseboat rentals and private sailing lessons. Their goal is to help people of every age, background and budget to experience everything the water has to offer in a fun, safe way. Before GetMyBoat, the boat charter industry was an extremely fragmented market that was inaccessible to most of the public. In many cases, the only access to boats was via a travel agent, two levels removed from the boat owner. Additionally, the boating industry as a whole has been steadily declining, failing to bring in a new generation of boaters. This failure is unfortunate, because boating is a great way to have memorable experiences, and it shouldn’t be difficult to find, book and enjoy. The founders of GetMyBoat created a platform to connect people who are looking to get out on the water with charter boat businesses that need customers. It’s kind of like Expedia for all types of water experiences, the company said. The company’s goal is to enrich lives with meaningful experiences and joy. The company mascot, Joy the Dolphin, is meant to embody the playfulness and fun that being near and on the water offers. Joy also represents the company’s focus on being a champion to protect and defend the marine environment. Hotspots With boats and experiences in over 9,300 cities around the world, there are some spots that are dependent on the time of year and some that are hot year-round. In the U.S., cities include Miami, San Diego, Austin, Chicago and Seattle. Some global hotspots include Mexico, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain, Italy and areas throughout the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. How to Use GetMyBoat Using GetMyBoat is simple. From a renter’s side, you can download the app or go to the website, search the area you are looking to visit, sort boats and experiences by type, price and guest count. Once you find a boat or experience you would like to book, you can select the dates and pay for the rental or send the owner an inquiry to answer any outstanding questions you might have. From the owner’s side, you can easily list your boat to rent out to others. Create an account and set your availability, prices, requirements, photos, videos and promote your experience. Once a guest books the boat, you have the opportunity to vet the guest, approve or create a custom quote for each guest, all while facilitating the payment for the booking. GetMyBoat gives owners the tools they need to run their business and turn their boat into a profit. MAY/JUNE 2022 • MANN ABOUT TOWN

TIMEX ANNOUNCES SPRING/SUMMER 2022 COLLECTION
T
imex, number one selling watch brand (according to The NPD Group/Retail Tracking Service, U.S., traditional watches, based on units sold, Annual 2021) has introduced its Spring/Summer seasonal lineup with the release of the iconic Q Timex 1972 Reissue to celebrate 50 years of quartz. New additions to the Waterbury collection also make an appearance this season, as do collaborations with an iconic arcade game and fan-favorite TV show. These pieces, designed at the Giorgio Galli Design Lab in Milan, Italy, stay true to the organization’s “We Don’t Stop” ethos, paying tribute to the Timex tradition of perseverance and watchmaking ingenuity, the brand said. “The Spring/Summer 2022 collection celebrates the legacy of Timex—beginning with its foundation in quality craftsmanship and spanning the course of a ceaselessly innovative 170-year history,” said Giorgio Galli, chief executive creative director of Timex Group. “This collection is truly unique from past releases. Though it brings back retro styles, it unapologetically plays with bright colors to draw attention to the timepiece and its wearer.” At the start of its rich heritage, Timex revolutionized the timekeeping industry, making well-built home clocks accessible to more than just the wealthy. Then came the quartz crisis of the early 1970s. While traditional Swiss watchmakers struggled, Timex innovated, releasing the affordable new design known today as the Q Timex 1972. The classic watch made history by spearheading the brand’s range of quartz timepieces, later to become some of the most beloved in the world, selling out time and time again. Now, on its 50th anniversary, Timex celebrates the Q that started it all with the Q Timex 1972 Reissue. This archival watch delivers boldness from every angle — from its quartz movement to the domed acrylic crystal and 43mm stainless-steel case. Courtesy of a striking red dial and polished handset to match, decades-old aesthetics come to life like no time has passed at all. Through the years, watches bearing the Q Timex symbol have always embodied the best of emerging technology and fresh design — qualities linking the originals to their modern-day editions, the brand said. Expanding on the often-sold-out Q Timex franchise is the new Q GMT, a natural evolution of the much-loved Q Timex 1978 Reissue. With its rotating top ring and 38mm stainless-steel case, the Q GMT has the heritage-inspired look fans already love, and now features a third watch hand for greater functionality.

The story of Q continues with the expansion of the Timex women’s portfolio; the Q Malibu is set to release in three new beach-inspired colorways. The new addition carries through Q Malibu features such as the 36mm stainless-steel case, domed acrylic crystal and expansion band — guaranteeing a perfect fit. Yet another hallmark collection of the Timex brand, the Waterbury, evolves this season. The Waterbury Dive-Inspired Automatic watch is the line’s first dive-style timepiece, combining a casual, sporty look with the Waterbury’s traditional aesthetics to create an all-new timeless, bold watch well-suited for everyday wear. Whether with the meticulously stitched walnut brown natural leather strap or the stainless-steel bracelet, the Waterbury Dive-Inspired watch is every enthusiast’s dream accessory. It’s only fitting that the collection that bore the brand’s very first timepieces also release the first Timex to incorporate upcycled, ocean-bound plastic as a sustainable material. Launched on Earth Day, the Waterbury Ocean utilizes tide ocean plastic for its bracelets and cases, which come in two different sizes and four colorways for fans to choose from. The most sustainable Timex yet, the Waterbury Ocean launches the brand’s company-wide activation to support, fund and drive initiatives to help clean up our oceans. A wave of change is coming from this reimagined timepiece, while the Expedition North Tide-Temp Compass is another welcome addition to the brand’s most eco-conscious collection. Of course, the season wouldn’t be complete without a couple of collaborative launches. This spring, Timex is taking a trip to Hawkins, Indiana, and entering the Upside Down. The Timex x Stranger Things collection is a highly anticipated collaboration between the hit Netflix series and the American watchmaker. The two cultural phenoms partnered to release three Stanger Things-inspired watches to celebrate the premier of the show’s fourth season, bringing supernatural forces and mystery to life like never before, the brand said. Also new this season is the Timex x Space Invaders featuring the arcade game’s well-known swarming aliens and iconic melody. Together, these watches show the adaptability of Timex, a driving force behind the brand’s ability to innovate without sacrificing its long-standing traditions of designing quality timepieces, the brand said. Additional collaborations to come include partnerships with outdoor gear designers, streetwear and all-American brands. KENDRA SCOTT LAUNCHES FIRST WATCH COLLECTION
K
endra Scott has expanded into a new category with its first-ever collection of watches, ranging from signature timepieces to elevated watch bands compatible with the complete Apple Watch Series. The Watch Collection by Kendra Scott is yet another milestone marking the brand’s 20th anniversary, launched just in time for Mother’s Day. The collection combines the functionality of a timepiece with the signature, design-driven elements Kendra Scott is celebrated for. Building on Kendra Scott’s jewelry expertise, an endeavor into watches was an organic next category, and the brand’s affinity for color and natural materials is incorporated throughout the collection, it said. The watches bear the brand’s heritage shapes, including the Alex, Dira and Elle — each featuring a unique, inlaid stone or shell dial face sourced from around the globe, including motherof-pearl, black mother-of-pearl, turquoise magnesite or abalone. The Watch Collection by Kendra Scott additionally features a GIA-certified diamond centered in the brand’s logo medallion at the 12 o’clock index, a nod to the brand’s love of sparkle, fine craftsmanship and attention to detail.
“We are thrilled to continue to expand the Kendra Scott brand with the launch of watches, a natural next step in our product innovation,” said Kendra Scott, founder, designer and executive chairwoman of the brand. “We all track our screen time, our scroll time, but not our time spent doing the things we love. A timepiece is a reminder that there’s no better gift than the time we can spend together, and I hope that this new category helps inspire our customers to take the time to celebrate moments for themselves and their loved ones this spring.” The Watch Collection by Kendra Scott is available in Kendra Scott retail stores and online at KendraScott.com/watches. Price points range from $198 to $328 for watches and $128 to $148 for Kendra Scott Bands, which are compatible with the complete Apple Watch Series.

ON THE TABLE
I
n the expansive space previously occupied by Kefi, Jay and Norisa Espinal, along with their son Justin, have brought new flavors and a sense of adventure to the Upper West Side. At the completely redesigned and rebuilt Tasca, the focus is on the Iberian Peninsula of Spain, the islands of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, a melting pot of Spanish and Latin-Caribbean flavors that showcases how the related cultures can work together in new and exciting ways. The family’s previous venture, Don Pedro’s on the Upper East Side, was a favorite among locals and visitors for over 10 years, winning rave reviews, including Zagat’s “Top Latin Restaurant in Manhattan.” Now at Tasca, the family is opening to a broad audience, welcoming everyone to a relaxing, fun experience with great food highlighting Spanish and Latin-Caribbean flavors inspired by the family heritage. The Espinals look to continue this heritage in the next generation with Justin, who literally grew up in the restaurant business; he started working at Don Pedro’s at the age of eight, eager to be a part of everything. Ask him about anything on the menu and his answer will be as metaphorical and eloquent as a poem. Interior A casual tavern room in front for drinks and small plates with beautiful high ceilings gives diners the vibe of being in the Caribbean, opening up to an adjoining, large, comfortable dining room with magnificent bird sconces and custom-designed wallpaper that incorporates the flora and fauna of regions represented at Tasca. The sprawling multi-level space provides two more dining rooms downstairs which includes a wine room for special events.
Menu El Bulli-trained Rene Hernandez, who previously worked as the executive chef at Don Pedro’s for eight years, was the consulting chef on Tasca’s seafood-centric menu. Hernandez brings classical Spanish expertise and a unique, contemporary flair to the time-honored tastes of the islands, while preserving the simple elegance of Latin-Caribbean cuisine. Head Chef Rufino Peralta oversees the extensive menu.
Small plates include pulpo a la parilla (tender grilled octopus with small purple Peruvian potatoes), setas y gambas (organic wild mushrooms with shrimp in garlic and saffron broth) and empanadas (a light, crispy dough filled with flavorful fillings such as beef brisket or vegetable and cheese turnovers served with smoked paprika aioli). Entrée plates, or raciones, include magret de pato (spice-rubbed duck paired with sweet plantain and zinfandel-soaked goat cheese) and churrasco (grilled skirt steak with yuca fries, Caribbean mojo and chimichurri), which are among guests’ favorites. Desserts include coconut tres leche (a coconut infused take on the classic cake) and pudin de pan (banana bread pudding with rum raisin glaze). A separate bar menu featuring pinchos, small bites and additional charcuterie selections will soon be rolled out. Beverage Program The cocktail and beer list were created by cocktail consultant Colin Stevens, who has a personal family connection to Spain. Colin is excited to fuse his experience in New York’s nightlife with Tasca’s Spanish and Caribbean flavors. The spirits list includes over 100 varieties of premium rums. Many of the cocktails, such as the Special Issue Armada (built with Spanish rum, amaro, raspberry and a touch of smoke), are great on their own, with snacks or with main courses. Another favorite is City of Gold, made with tequila, Cara Cara orange, honey, fresno, habanero and cinnamon. The Isle of Flowers gets its red-purple color from hibiscus (the national flower of Puerto Rico) and its kick from vodka, Spanish white vermouth and a touch of Curacao. At Tasca, you’ll find a changing roster of beers on tap and bottle/can selections featuring a list from Spain and the United States. Wine Tasca has the capacity to properly serve over 400 wines, with a current inventory of roughly 250, all of which are temperature controlled. The list is 80% Spanish with others from locales around the world, including Napa Valley, Provence and New Zealand.

M
ichelin-recognized aRoqa is the culmination of Owner Monica Saxena’s life journey from moonlighting as a restaurant hostess while working full time in Manhattan, to moving to California and into the Software and Semiconductor world as Director of Operations for a tech startup in Los Angeles. aRoqa, now in its 5th year, creates an elevated Indian dining experience featuring small plates that allows guests to taste multiple dishes paired with innovative and beautiful cocktails. Monica opened aRoqa as an investor, but when a year later management informed her of the failing operation and suggested selling, she decided to take over operations, working 16 hours a day to learn the business and understand its challenges. With a completely new team at the front of the house, aRoqa modeled itself on the owners’ experience of professionalism and teamwork and incorporated an environment of shared responsibility, fostering a culture of work ethic, integrity and trust. Each employee
was cross trained to understand and manage different aspects of the operations, from the kitchen to the bar. The Indian-style small plates concept was designed by husband-and-wife team Consulting Chefs Hanisha Singh and Jamsheed Bhote before the restaurant construction was completed in 2016. The couple has been dubbed the Power Couple of Delhi’s Food and Beverage Scene by Lifestyle Asia, and Bhote was recently named one of the Top 20 Chefs From India by Indian Food Network. Helming the kitchen is Executive Chef Munny Passi, who comes from a family of restaurateurs in India. He began working in his father’s family restaurant at the tender age of 13 and it was there that he learned the techniques of Indian cooking from many of the country’s regions. He left India for England, working in traditional Indian restaurants throughout London. He then made his way to New York and landed a job as Bhatti Indian Grill’s head chef, where he worked for four years before joining aRoqa. The menu begins with Taste Plates, a collection of beautifully presented small plates including Murgh
Chops (tandoor grilled chicken served with gram flour chutney plated on a model bullock cart and flambéed tableside), Crab Uttapam (bite sized rice pancakes topped with spiced shredded crab and tomato, served with a lentil based south Indian clear soup in shot glasses designed as a chaser) and Kaitaifi Mushroom (wild mushroom croquettes wrapped in kaitaifi dough, served with smoked yogurt and pickled onions). Shared Plates, Chef Passi’s signature dishes, include Fenugreek Murgh (bites of chicken simmered in a medium spicy fenugreek sauce), Chef ’s Special Goat Keema Matar (ground goat meat with peas prepared in chef ’s special blend of spices), Goan Shrimp Curry (sautéed jumbo shrimp in a blend of coconut tamarind sauce) and aRoqa Okra Special (perfectly cooked crispy okra tossed in chef ’s spices). Also available is a variety of Biryani and a selection of stuffed breads like Paneer Aur Hari Mirch Kulcha, filled with Indian cheese and green chilies. Imaginative desserts are highlighted by aRoqa Daulat Ki Chaat (though the dish has a savory name, it is a sweet delight from Northern India consisting of a luxurious swirl of saffron milk foam adorned with sliced

almonds and blackberries, served in a bowl that emanates smoking dry ice) and Coconut Kheer (a dollop of mango sorbet with a jaggery emulsion surrounded by luscious coconut rice pudding). Brunch was designed by Saxena and Chef Passi to introduce Indian breakfast to the New York brunch scene, featuring a combination of traditional Indian and street food-inspired breakfast items such as Chola Bhatoora (spiced chickpeas served with fried bread) Poori Aloo (fried Indian bread with potato curry, inspired by the food vendors serving travelers at Indian railway stations) and Indian Masala Omelet (onion, tomatoes, green chilies and fresh chopped coriander served with toast and baby potatoes).
Lunch specials include Paneer or Chicken Tikka Sandwiches (served with a side salad and fries) and Vegetarian or Chicken Curry Boxes (paneer or chicken tikka masala served with the vegetable of the day, rice, and bread) for a quick pick-up or dine-in options.
A nice, well-rounded selection of wines by the bottle includes pio cesare barbera d’alba, alta mora etna bianco, and chateauneuf du pape as well as a selection of sparkling wines such as stella di notte, chandon brut rosé, and moet & chandon impérial brut.
The aesthetically pleasing and well-balanced cocktail menu highlights include Re-Engagement (cilantro-pineapple vodka, green chartreuse, pistachio orgeat and lime, served in a glass that exudes smoke from dry ice) and Marigold and Smoke (Great King Street Artist’s Blend, Giffard Apricot Brandy, Ardbeg whisky, ginger, lemon and turmeric cordial). The talented staff also has the ability to make bespoke cocktails based on guests’ flavor and spirit preferences.
The stylish interior designed by Texer Nam – whose past projects include Baar Baar – features an alluring black and gold theme adorned with pendants and spotlights that cast a warm glow over the restaurant. The cocktail bar is layered with gold plating and a black stone countertop and leads into an intimate dining room. Website: aroqanyc.com

The Princess of Diamonds BY BENNETT MARCUS
The Tinder Swindler Saga
You’ve heard about the “Tinder Swindler” – the con man who bilked countless companies and unsuspecting women out of millions by posing as a scion of the billionaire Leviev family. The bizarre story became a global sensation after being portrayed in a Netflix documentary. Chagit Leviev, the stylish and savvy daughter of the diamond company’s founder and an executive in its business enterprises, has led the family’s response to this unwanted attack, initiating legal action against the scammer and reaching out to the women featured in the Netflix show to collaborate on a jewelry collection whose proceeds will go toward recouping their devastating financial losses. “These women were courageous enough to go on Netflix and tell the whole world how they were deceived,” said Leviev. “I felt they had suffered enough, let’s help them. Let’s do something together that would bring this to an amazing closure.” CEO of Leviev Group USA In speaking with Leviev, CEO of the U.S. arm of the multi-billion-dollar international conglomerate Leviev Group of Companies, mother of four, an active philanthropist and an Instagram influencer, it becomes clear that her leadership instincts, compassion and the morals and values that her parents instilled in her have helped her to gracefully deal with such a disturbing situation. Today, Chagit Leviev is president and CEO of Leviev Group USA, which includes Leviev Diamonds USA, the largest privately held diamond firm to control all facets of the diamond pipeline, from mine to market. It was founded by her father, Lev Leviev, a renowned businessman and philanthropist, who is also invested in real estate, technology and retail, among other industries. Based in New York since 2012, Chagit Leviev was also CEO of the real estate firm Africa Israel USA, which is behind such prominent Manhattan residential projects including 20 Pine - The Collection by Armani Casa; The Apthorp; District at 111 Fulton St.; 15 Broad - Downtown by Philippe Starck and 88 Leonard St., as well as The Marquis

Residences on Brickell Avenue in Miami. In 2015, Leviev’s expertise in real estate financing, investment, development, asset management and leasing came into play as she presided over the firm’s sale of the former New York Times building in Times Square. Zara to Diamonds Growing up, Leviev’s family moved between Israel, Belgium and the U.K., and she is fluent in six languages — something she considers an advantage in business. “People shouldn’t gossip next to me in another language because I’m probably going to understand it,” she laughed. While she always knew she would join the family business, she didn’t necessarily know in what capacity. One of nine siblings, Leviev observed her older sisters’ experiences when they each joined the company. “You always get judged when you are the daughter of the boss. People consider you incapable, not smart enough, bossy,” she said. After graduating from Bar Ilan University, she did a round of short internships at various divisions in the company, from Zara to the diamond department. She then decided to work outside of the family business, joining the consulting firm Deloitte to gain knowledge and experience. It was tough; she often had to work until 5:00 a.m. when there were big projects, and at times she was unable to take days off to join family vacations. “It really gave me good experience on what it is to be just another employee,” she said. Eventually, an opportunity arose to join the family business in a key position as CFO of Memorand Group, a holding company in Israel. Her father insisted she was perfect for the job despite her protests — she was quite young and had a new baby. “This is just who my father is. He always throws us into the deep water and trusts us to figure out how to swim out. He told me, ‘You can do it. It’s yours. Good luck,’” she said. In addition to her role as chief financial officer, Leviev sat on the boards of prominent organizations including apparel company Fox-Wizel and Israel’s TV channel 9.
A Life-changing Move to U.S. A few years later, her father’s company expanded to the U.S., and he tapped Chagit to take the reins there. The move turned out to be the biggest turning point in her life. The welcome there was not quite what she expected — facing some resistance, she had to gain control of the company and reroute the way the business had been operating until then. “I was 25 when I moved to New York, and I couldn’t believe my strength and the capabilities I found within myself. It really turned me into the person that I am today,” she said. Faith & Family Are Central The Leviev family is Orthodox, and even with Leviev’s high-stress job, Shabbat time is devoted to spending time with her family. People often ask how she balances running so many businesses and raising a family while observing Jewish laws, but she does not view religion as something that restricts her. “I see it as a way to guide me, the way to tell me how to live my life to the fullest and to the best. I take off on Shabbat and close my phone for 25 hours to totally be with my family,” she said. Work has no limit and no end, she added, and being obligated to disconnect from work and be home with the family provides separation and allows her to regain strength and energy for the week ahead. Her faith is also a comfort — even in business dealings. If, say, a deal that she worked hard for doesn’t pan out, she figures it was not meant to be. “Being a believer, knowing that God has a plan for me, if this didn’t happen, it’s for a reason,” she said. Believing, she said, helps her overcome failure, appreciate any successes and keeps her humble. “I’m looking at my father, he is a very successful self-made person. He was poor when he was a kid,” she said. His religion keeps him grounded, she added. “My parents have been together for over 45 years, raising nine kids and now dozens of grandchildren. Family has always been a priority. No matter how busy my father was, and how many countries he was traveling to every week, on Shabbat, he would be back home with all of us,” she said.

Philanthropy As long as Leviev can remember, her father was passionate about charity, making a difference and helping those less fortunate. “His philanthropic work has been revolutionary, establishing hundreds of schools, community centers, temples, orphanages and hospitals around the world. No business deal in the world excites him as much as charity,” she said. The Heart Center at Sheba Medical Center in Israel is named for her parents. Chagit is following in her family’s footsteps, keeping the Jewish law of donating a minimum of 10% of her earnings. “Ten percent of what you make is simply not yours, and you have to pass it forward,” she said. She is involved with many charities focusing on community, education and women’s empowerment. This spring, her family spearheaded a Passover project, not only donating $1 million to needy families to buy food for the holiday but also matching the donations of others, raising a total of $2.3 million. “Having the whole community be a part of the giving, and doing it together is just so much more powerful,” she said. Encouraging a Jewish education from a young age is a part of the Leviev family’s mission, and in New York they established a free, public school called the Jewish Institute of Queens. The reason: private schools in the city are so expensive that most people cannot afford the high tuition rates. Over 10,000 students have graduated from the school; because of its success, the Leviev family established a second location and are currently in negotiations for a third location. Jewish Woman Entrepreneur Despite her busy schedule, Leviev dedicates her time to many causes as a leader in her community, serving as president of a school and as a board member of various organizations dedicated to advancing women. She is a role model to many who seek to understand how an observant mother, wife and businesswoman can juggle it all, and is a sought-after speaker by women’s organizations, many of which follow her on Instagram as well. She serves on the board of the Jewish Woman Entrepreneur (JWE) which provides women with resources, education, mentorship and connections to achieve their personal and professional goals. Leviev is also an active member of Batsheva, which offers motivational support to empower accomplished career women, and in Ezras Nashim, a group of all-female EMTs in the Orthodox community. “They have saved many lives, delivered babies. [The organization] does incredible work, and is something that I love to support,” she said. Stronger Together: Support for the Tinder Swindler’s Victims After the courageous women opened up to Netflix about being duped by the scam artist, Leviev decided to take positive action.

“Now they’re talking to the real Leveiv family,” she said. She proposed that the women design jewelry that will be sold on the company’s website, leviev.com, with all net proceeds going to the three women. They called the project “Stronger Together.” “They are super excited about it. It’s a bracelet with two rings and two diamonds that are interlocked within each other, showing that the world is round and we do come full circle,” Leviev said. “Stronger Together” also signifies the three women coming together and speaking up, not caring if they are judged for trying to fight for justice for the harm the Tinder Swindler caused them. “Together they can make a change,” said Leviev. “If they each would tell a story separately, it wouldn’t go as far. No one would believe them. The fact that they all came together is putting a stop to what this guy was doing.” It was also important to the women that the bracelet be affordable, so everybody could be a part of this movement. es Kollegian and Brendan Smith, longtime friends who traveled the world together, wanted to make a difference. Kollegian, a two-time cancer survivor, and Smith, who has battled PTSD for over 20 years, have experienced first-hand how hemp has changed not only their lives, but also the lives of close friends and family. Tired of seeing people trying to take advantage of the spike in popularity as both THC and CBD became available to the public, they set out to create the highest quality, most effective and sustainable product possible while educating their customers on the benefits of using exotic cannabinoids, custom terpenes and plant and mushrooms adaptogens to optimize health and wellness over time. This led to their founding of their wellness company Raw Botanics. Their philosophy is based on the idea that “you are the expert on you,” so they want their customers to be informed and empowered to make the best choices for their own bodies and minds. Relax, Recover & Rebalance Their supplements focus on four main blends with four main focuses: Rise, Relax, Rest and Restore.

Their aim is to help users to relax, recover and rebalance with CBD, CBG, CBC and CBN products. They combine exotic hemp-derived cannabinoids, custom terpenes, functional mushrooms and botanical adaptogen extracts to help customers feel and perform at their best. Raw Botanitcs’ approach is based on creating natural products that work and focus on specific health themes, like performance and focus, rest and better sleep or joint and muscle comfort. They extensively research natural ingredients that will complement hemp botanical extracts and create an impact on people’s wellbeing. They use cutting edge equipment, innovative testing practices and best-in-class extraction methods in order to source the best plant genetics that yields the highest quality, broad and full-spectrum hemp oil products. They start with by using (CO2) as a solvent to extract oil from botanical plant material because it yields safer, cleaner and purer oil. This is followed by a nano-emulsification process to combine the exotic hemp-derived oil with benefit-based ter-
penes and adaptogens for highest efficacy. They also do all of this without adding any artificial flavors or sugars to the products. Their ingredients are organic where possible and always come from bio-sustainable sources and producers that are treated fairly. To ensure quality and consistency, they batch test every product run twice. Honest Guidance Raw Botanics’ goal is to provide customers with the tools and resources that will help them understand the science behind cannabichromene oil, cannabinol oil and cannabigerol oil, how they might benefit from them and what they can and should take. To help meet this goal, they provide extensive information on their website

addressing common questions, explaining more information about the ingredients they use; they even provide a quiz for customers to take to see which product would be the best fit for them. What is CBD? CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of a group of over 80 phytocannabinoid compounds that are found in the hemp (Cannabis Sativa) plant. CBD specifically comes from the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant — not to be confused with oil that comes from hemp seeds, which contain no cannabinoids. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that doesn’t get you “high” – and in its pure form, isn’t controlled. For this reason, interest in the potential health benefits of the compound have increased and CBD has become a part of many people’s health and wellness regimen. CBD is a phytocannabinoid and has been shown to help the endocannabinoid system (ECS) preserve the body’s natural supply of endocannabinoids. Science has demonstrated that supplementing the body’s supply of endocannabinoids with phytocannabinoids may help its ability to thrive in a variety of ways. What are Adaptogens? Adaptogens are non-toxic plants that help your
body handle stress, whether physical, chemical or biological. These herbs and roots have been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurvedic healing traditions. Raw Botanics utilizes customized adaptogen formulas to maximize their natural benefits for consumers. Product Options All four of the blends (Rise, Relax, Rest and Restore) are available in both tincture and softgel capsule form. The Relax and Rest blends also have soothing sprays as part of their collections, while the Restore blend also has topical options, which include a roll-on product and a cream product. The tinctures are taken using a dropper directly administered underneath the tongue and held there for 30 seconds before swallowing. This allows for quicker absorption, while the softgel capsules allow for a slower, more gradual release throughout the day. The Relax soothing spray is great for both pillows and facemasks, while the Rest soothing spray should be limited to pillow use to avoid sleepiness throughout your day. The roll on and cream options for the Restore blend allows customers
to target relief directly to specific areas with pain, such as achy joints or muscles. For more information, visit rawbotanics.com.

E
ight years ago, dermatologist Emma Guttman-Yassky, MD, PhD, started treating a young boy with severe eczema. The skin condition left him covered with raw wounds all over his body. “He was homeschooled because he was afraid to show his face at school,” recalled Dr. Guttman, the Waldman Professor and Chair of Dermatology and Immunology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. She began treating him with the drugs available at the time. A few years into his treatment, a promising new drug, dupilumab (Dupixent), was approved for use in children with eczema. After Dr. Guttman prescribed the medication, the boy’s skin improved dramatically. He returned to school and eventually went to college. “Recently, he came to visit, and his skin was totally clear,” she said. “He told me he owes his professional career to me.” Leading Scientist and Caring Physician This is the type of patient story that motivates many physicians to do what they do. But in Dr. Guttman’s case, the story illustrates more than her role as a compassionate doctor. The physician and scientist is also a world leader in eczema research. It was her work that helped create a molecular map of eczema. That map, in turn, led to the development of dupilumab, a drug known as a type II immune blocker, which has transformed the treatment of eczema, asthma and other allergic conditions for children and adults around the world. “Contributing to this groundbreaking treatment that has helped millions is one of my proudest professional accomplishments,” Dr. Guttman said.
Under Dr. Guttman’s guidance, the Mount Sinai Health System has earned a reputation as a leading center for the research and treatment of eczema as well as alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss. In March, Mount Sinai launched the Alopecia Center of Excellence, made possible by a $5 million gift from the Pure Family. The Center — the first of its kind — will allow Mount Sinai to deepen and capitalize on its expertise in translational research to provide comprehensive treatment and coordinated services for patients with alopecia areata and other types of alopecia.
at The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. She then came to the United States to pursue a postdoctoral research fellowship at The Rockefeller University. Following her fellowship, she completed a second dermatology residency training at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. Dr. Guttman is board-certified in Israel and the U.S., and the combined training she received in both countries gave her an unusually well-rounded education in dermatology. “I took the best of both experiences, and they built me into what I am today,” she said.
In her lab, Dr. Guttman continues to study inflammatory skin conditions, hoping to find new treatments. In 2021, she was tapped to head the dermatology department across the Mount Sinai Health System, and she’s eagerly establishing new research goals to help Mount Sinai’s already proud reputation grow even stronger. “As chair of one of the largest dermatology departments, I want to develop all flavors of research, including building a strong skin cancer research program,” she said.
She joined Mount Sinai in 2011, and two years later, after receiving a major grant from the Leo Foundation, launched the Eczema Center of Excellence at Mount Sinai. “The center focuses on providing excellent patient care and offering clinical trials to patients,” she said.
Eczema Research Excellence Dr. Guttman takes dermatology personally. She has had eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, since she was a child. Multiple members of her family have also dealt with eczema and other allergic conditions, including severe asthma (eczema, asthma and allergies often go hand in hand). Her experiences drew her to dermatology. Dr. Guttman was born in Romania and immigrated to Israel as a child. She earned her medical degree from the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel-Aviv University and a PhD from Bar-Ilan University, then completed her first dermatology residency
She remains the director of that center and also heads the Occupational Dermatitis Clinic and the Laboratory for Inflammatory Skin Diseases. Dr. Guttman’s successes are fueled by working both as a physician and a scientist. “I take my observations from the clinic into the lab and vice versa, to ultimately improve patients’ lives and develop new treatments,” she said. One of her most significant breakthroughs was mapping out the role of immune cells in the eczema disease process. Around 2006, scientists had described a genetic mutation that affected the skin’s moisture barrier. The defect leads to a “leaky” barrier thought to let moisture out of the skin and allow allergens in. Scientists were so focused on the skin barrier that they were slow to accept that eczema was caused by immune molecules. MAY/JUNE 2022 • MANN ABOUT TOWN

linked to a different process, called type II immunity. So how was it possible that a drug designed for eczema also improved alopecia?
But Dr. Guttman realized she was on to something important. Her gamble paid off when drug makers Sanofi and Regeneron finally began paying attention and developed dupilumab, which blocks the action of certain immune cells. Today, the drug is widely used to treat allergic conditions such as eczema and asthma. “The drug has revolutionized the field of allergy and asthma,” Dr. Guttman said. “If you believe in what you’re doing, you need to stay strong and go against the dogma.”
Most of the alopecia research had been done in mice. Dr. Guttman started studying blood and scalp samples from people with alopecia, and once again, she turned conventional wisdom on its head. Her research showed that type I and type II processes often coexist, and both are at play in alopecia and eczema. Based on those findings, she started a clinical trial that showed dupilumab improved alopecia in about half of people — specifically, those with a personal or family history of allergy or an elevated level of certain immune cells in their blood.
A Fresh Look at Alopecia Now Dr. Guttman is turning her innovative thinking toward alopecia. The disease, recently brought to public attention by actress Jada Pinkett Smith, occurs when the immune system attacks hair follicles. Hair falls out in clumps, sometimes progressing to total baldness. “It’s a very difficult disease emotionally, and one that changes the way patients see themselves or their identity,” Dr. Guttman said.
Now she is continuing the research to determine the drug’s effectiveness in that population. Existing treatments for alopecia have some serious side effects, Guttman pointed out. Dupilumab is exciting because it’s a safe drug. Long-term safety is important for a chronic disease such as alopecia, which can last a lifetime. “Our aim isn’t just a drug to regrow hair, but a drug that’s safe enough for patients to take all their lives,” she said.
While caring for patients with both eczema and alopecia, she noticed that some people treated with dupilumab started to regrow hair. That was unexpected since researchers believed alopecia and eczema followed two different inflammatory processes. They thought alopecia was linked to an immune process called type I immunity, while eczema was
She also hopes to uncover whether a different disease process might be at play in the half of people with alopecia who don’t have a history of allergies. Meanwhile, she continues her eczema research — which she calls her “first love” — in hopes of finding a drug that will halt the disease process rather than just treat the symptoms.

Dermatology Research and Treatment Under her guidance, Mount Sinai has established a reputation as a leader in eczema and alopecia treatment. “We have dedicated centers with physicians and nurses who really understand these diseases,” she said. “To make a big difference in patients’ lives, you have to bridge great clinical expertise, strong research and clinical trials. That’s exactly what Mount Sinai offers.” The department is making progress not only in alopecia and eczema research, but in many other conditions, including keloids, psoriasis, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and skin cancer. “We want to solve many more dermatological conditions, from bench to bedside and back,” Guttman said. As a woman and an immigrant, Dr. Guttman has often had to prove herself. Now, she’s committed to giving other researchers and physicians a chance, no matter what their background is. “I mentor many students, and I’m passionate about giving good people a chance to succeed,” she said. “We have a very diverse department, and I want to make sure everyone is represented at the table.” After a career that has taken her from one side of the globe to another, she’s thrilled to have finally landed in New York. “Mount Sinai is a lot like me. I love the innovative thinking and when there is a problem, we see solutions,” Dr. Guttman said. “We want to make a difference in our patients’ lives.”

his summer, Passalacqua — one of Lake Como, Italy’s most spectacular private homes — opens its doors as a 24-suite retreat after three years of restoration. Standing above the village of Moltrasio, with seven acres of terraced gardens, sweeping down to the lake’s shore, this 18th century villa is steeped in history, having hosted some of the world’s most brilliant minds in music, literature, art and politics from Napoleon Bonaparte to Vicenzo Bellini to Winston Churchill.
Passalacqua has become the passion project of one of Italy’s leading hoteliers — the De Santis family, owners of the iconic Grand Hotel Tremezzo. The family’s aim is to bring this mansion and its secular park back to life with love, respect and thoughtfulness, recreating the unique timeless charm of vivere Italiano. Every single aspect of the property’s interiors, including the meticulous restoration of the frescoes, handblown glass chandeliers and mirrored secret minibars, has been personally overseen and curated, with no two suites being the same. An Historic Home Built on land originally owned by Pope Innocent XI, the villa was constructed in the 18th century by Count Andrea Lucini-Passalacqua, who worked with architect Felice Soave and designer Giocondo Albertolli to bring his vision of making one of the largest villas on Lake Como come to life. In the years that followed, the villa became a gathering place for some of Italy’s most prominent figures. Vincenzo Bellini made Villa Passalacqua his home in 1829, composing two of his most famous operas, “Norma” and “Sonnambula.” The 21st century iteration of Passalacqua will feature 24 suites spread across three accommodation offerings — each with its own distinctive character and charm. The main historic residence, the Villa, features 12 sumptuous suites which celebrate the grand Italian baroque style and original frescoes, including a double-height balustraded music room, where Bellini played the piano. The Pus Palazz or “ancient stables,” comprises eight suites with centuries-old, exposed beam work, glossy damask walls and a striking spiral staircase. A spa will be located in what was the cow’s manger with two treatment cabins offering Barbara Sturm treatments, a relaxation area with columns and vaulted ceilings. A hidden humid area with sauna and steam bath is situated within the secret tunnels of the villa. Down by the lake, the intimate Casa Al Lago is ideal for exclusive use, with four suites, each appointed with a private garden — all sharing a beautiful dining area and fireplace.
MANN OVERBOARD the skills of Barovier & Toso, a Venetian company established in the 17th century and renowned for its handblown Murano glass chandeliers; standout pieces include a five-meter-tall chandelier in the Sala della Musica and a special installation comprising six chandeliers for the entrance of the main staircase. Metal artisans Il Bronzetto from Florence have handmade brass lamps and Fortuny has created traditional silk tiered lampshades within the Pus Palazz. More than 20 different types of Italian marble have been sourced from caves in Verona and Carrara to clad the bathrooms including the unique Breccia Pontificia also used in the Vatican, which looks more like art than stone. The impressive salons of the villa have been restored in the original Terrazzo Veneziano style using marble dating back to 1787. The bedroom floors have been laid with traditional Cotto Lombardo tiles or restored original wood. All mirrors have been individually made to measure by Venetian glass specialist Barbini, a small family-run company dating back to 1927, that has also custom-made mirrored chests to reveal secret in-suite minibars. The bed linen will be made by Beltrami in fibra di legno, a natural fiber derived from birch trees, which is softer than silk. The curtains will be made from silk taffeta sourced in Como. For the rest of the soft furnishings, the family went to Rubelli, a historic company from Venice to match the distinctive color palette of each interior space, from the classical frescoes of the Villa to the warm burgundy and green of the Pus Palazz and the fresh garden suites of Casa Al Lago. The De Santis family has painstakingly trawled through local markets and auction houses to source antique furniture, precious print and artwork and vintage carpets to suit the character of each space – from the grand Italian style of the Villa to the more laid-back comfort of the Pus Palazz. A traditional family-run bottega (studio), Bottega Conticelli from Orvieto has crafted room details and objets d’art from leather and wood, including vintage-style steamer trunks that conceal in-suite televisions. Bathroom amenities will be scented with the villa’s own original fragrance, Aqua Como 1787, and discreet hotel staff will be dressed in the chicest uniforms designed by Giuliva Heritage.
Italian Gardens are located at the highest point of the estate and have the vantage point of spectacular lake views, while the ancient Winter Garden looks out onto a 20-meter swimming pool, surrounded by vibrant parasols, sun loungers and furnished in a vibrant patterned fabric custom-made especially for Passalacqua by fashion designer JJ Martin. Next to the Rose Garden, the Magnolia Garden will offer the perfect space for practicing yoga under the trees. Guests are invited to collect freshly laid eggs from the chicken shed and forage for fruit — cherries, apricots and kiwis, depending on the season in the fruit garden. A game of bocce is available for all to play within the middle of the vegetable garden. A second Winter Garden will feature a state-of-the-art al fresco gym, which in turn looks out onto the estate’s ancient olive grove, where the oil has been pressed for generations. A clay tennis court is located lakeside, with plans to set up an open-air cinema next door. Guests can spend time on the water, setting sail from Passalacqua’s private dock, on board two vintage boats: “Giumello,” a traditional wooden boat with a unique shape and “Didi,” to be furnished in Loro Piana fabrics and offering plenty of space for sunbathing. “At Home” Dining Passalacqua will eschew formal dining areas for a relaxed “home away from home” approach. Guests will be treated to authentic and simple Italian home cooking, using fresh “garden to table” ingredients. Chef Elio Sironi, formerly head chef of Bulgari Hotels and famous for his spaghetti al pomodoro is designing the seasonally changing menus. House Executive Chef Mauro is truly a “chef di casa,” having worked for Milan’s most prestigious families for over 25 years. Guests are encouraged to visit the kitchens and speak to the team to discuss their menu for the day, bearing freshly foraged vegetables to contribute to the meal or partake in an ad hoc pasta making session. All are invited to choose their own location to dine within the property, whether on one of the terraces, in the Rose Garden or down by the lake; staff will be on hand to set up tables accordingly. The idea is to have an extremely personalized dining experience.
A Garden of Delights The majestic, terraced gardens, which overlook Lake Como, are simply extraordinary, featuring private hideaways and more than 15 enchanting water fountains. They are full of centuries-old trees considered to be some of the most historic, beautiful and well-maintained in all of Italy. The
The De Santis family has worked tirelessly with local artisans and small, generations-old Italian companies, drawing on their personal relationships to ensure that a sense of place, heritage and high-quality craftsmanship resonates throughout the property. SPORTS INNERVIEW WITH ANN LIGUORI
Exclusive Interview with
HANK AARON By Ann Liguori
W
hat struck me most about Hank Aaron during our most memorable “Sports Innerview” television sitdown in 1989 was his humility. Aaron was in Manhattan and being honored by Master Card as part of its “Greatest Moments in Baseball History” program. It was an honor, he told me, that meant more to him than anything else he had ever achieved. That was a huge statement coming from Aaron, I thought, as the affable, somewhat shy gentleman was one of the greatest baseball players of all time! Yet he had absolutely no air of arrogance about him. Aaron played 23 seasons in the majors, for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves from 1955 through 1974 in the National League and with the Milwaukee Brewers from 1975 to 1976 in the American League. He won the World Series for the then-Milwaukee Braves in 1957, was a 25-time All-Star, four-time NL home run leader, four-time RBI leader and twotime NL batting champ. Aaron didn’t just break records, he destroyed them. He hit 24 or more home runs every year from 1955 through 1973. At his retirement, he held most of Major League Baseball’s career power-hitting records. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982. But Hammerin’ Hank, as he was nicknamed, was most famous for his 755 career home runs, breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record that had stood for 33 years. Ruth had become a legend, as he hit 714 career home runs in a career that spanned 22 seasons, from 1914 to 1935. When I told Aaron that many people thought he was one of the greatest players to ever pick up a bat, Aaron humbly replied, “Well, thank you. I’m glad to be included in that. … I played with guys like Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, [Sandy] Koufax, [Bob] Gibson. A lot of great ball players played in that era. When you mentioned that I’m one of the greatest, that’s fine, that makes me feel very, very good, because, believe me, those guys were tremendous.” I then asked if he thought his 755 home runs was the most significant record in baseball (at that time). “I don’t know if it’s the most significant record. When I was approaching that record, everyone was saying that they thought that was the only record that would never be broken, excluding Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak,” Aaron replied. “It was good that I broke it and the reason I think that it
happened to me is that the fact that I played with some very good ballplayers. [Eddie] Matthews [my teammate] was there for a long time with me. Anytime you have the protection behind you, and if you’re any kind of player at all, you’re certainly going to attain a lot of records.” Aaron ended the 1973 season one home run short of the record. He explained that on April 4, 1974, the day he tied the record in a game against the Cincinnati Reds, “They said, ‘What do you want today?’ It was the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s assassination. And I talked to the Cincinnati people, and I said, ‘What I’d like to have is just a moment of silence for Dr. King.’ They said, ‘We don’t want to get into politics.’ I said, ‘It has nothing to do with politics. He is just a man who needs to be remembered for what he has done for all of us in America.’ About 10 minutes later, the President of the United States came through the tunnel; they had told me just a moment ago they told me they didn’t want to get into politics, but they had one of the biggest politicians there. … I guess a year before then, everyone started talking about where I was going to hit the home run as if I knew … I didn’t know where I was going to hit the home run.” “As if you can plan something like that,” I added. Aaron continued, “Commissioner Bowie Kuhn said, ‘Well, according to my records, Hank Aaron played today, he was off yesterday, so he has to play two out of three games everywhere he goes.’ And I said, ‘Well, fine.’ I wish somebody would give me a choice of doing what I wanted to do. Nobody ever gave me a choice.” Aaron played two out of three and tied Ruth’s record in his very first at-bat on his first swing of the season. “I hit a home run the first time up, off of Jack Billingham and the next day, I think I didn’t play at all and then the next day, I went 0 for 4, something like that, and somebody said, ‘Were you really trying!?’” The Braves returned to Atlanta and on April 8, 1974, in the fourth inning, Aaron hit home run number 715 off LA Dodgers pitcher Al Downing. As Aaron closed in on the home run record, he received thousands of letters every week, including hate mail from people who did not want to see him break Ruth’s homerun record. He was the recipient of death threats. Aaron admitted he did not know if he’d live to see the 1974 season! “It should have been the happiest moment of my
life and yet, it probably was the saddest moment of my baseball career because I was living in a fishbowl,” revealed Aaron. “I’d go to the ballpark and if the bus was not able to pull onto the playing field to get me out then I had to have policemen get me out of the back exits. My teammates would check into one hotel, and I’d have to stay in another one.” Was it totally racially motivated or because he was breaking Ruth’s long-standing home run record? “I think it was a little of both,” Aaron shared. “I think people wanted to see and be part of baseball history. But I couldn’t take anything for granted because of all the mail I had received. There was almost a year and a half in which I wasn’t allowed to open any mail because all of it had to go through an FBI agent to find out if there was anything damaging. I had two sons in a private school and the good thing about that is that they didn’t allow any of the press to come on campus. But … my daughter, who was a student, was not allowed to enjoy her recreation. She was confined on the campus because of all the hate mail I was receiving every day, threatening to kidnap [her] and things like that. So it was a very tough time for me, about a year and a half.” Aaron experienced racism his entire career. “It was tough from a lot of standpoints,” admitted Aaron. “When you play with your teammates and have the bus driver drive up to a restaurant and tell the white players to get out and they can eat and then they tell you, ‘You have 40 minutes to go across town, to eat and get back,’ it was very frustrating … Then when they are driving to the city, and they drive up to the hotel and let the white players out and then you have to get in a cab and go someplace else to stay. During spring training, you can’t bring your family. … Your family doesn’t have anything to do because you can’t go to the racetrack. … There’s a lot that you have that really bothers you as a human being and you kind of wonder, since I am part of this ballclub, I am making you money, I’m trying to help you win a championship, why not all of us stay as a family, and do things as a family and maybe we can break some of these racial doors down?” He continued, “Even in some places like St. Louis, Missouri, we were able to stay at the hotel, but they wouldn’t let us come down in the lobby to eat to have our breakfast or dinner.” “Unbelievable,” I exclaimed in disgust. We ended our interview with him expressing his belief in the need for changes in the baseball industry, looking forward to a more equal future for all.

enowned businessman Richard M. Schulze, founder of Best Buy, has selected Salamander Hotels & Resorts to manage Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club.
Set on the idyllic white beaches of Rendezvous Bay, the 300-acre property (formerly Cuisinart Resort) was purchased by Schulze in 2020 and has since undergone a multimillion-dollar renovation which has created a Caribbean paradise that is elegant, refined and playful. The 178-suite resort offers a collection of world-class amenities, including seven restaurants and lounges, a 27,000-square-foot spa and Aurora International Golf Club, the stunning 18-hole Championship Golf Course recently re-designed by Greg Norman. A nine-hole short course, also a Greg Norman Signature design, will also be introduced this summer. “We are dedicated to making Aurora Anguilla the finest resort in the Caribbean and I’m very proud of the enhancements that we have made to date,” said Schulze. “With a new, hands-on, collaborative partner, we will provide guests the thoughtful, anticipatory service and experiences for which Salamander Hotels & Resorts is renowned.” Schulze’s goal is to make Aurora Anguilla appealing to a broad range of luxury travelers, inclusive of families. And, through his Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, Schulze is also supporting a variety of causes on the island, including food insecurity, educational technology and health care. He is also instrumental in developing a local school lunch program and a neighborhood health clinic. “One of the most rewarding aspects of my ownership of Aurora Anguilla is the rare opportunity to give back to this wonderful community and to continuously improve the lives of Anguillans,” said Schulze.
With an extensive knowledge of resort repositioning, Salamander assumed management of Aurora Anguilla on April 26. The company was founded by noted businesswoman and entrepreneur Sheila Johnson, who, like Schulze, has a deep commitment to the island of Anguilla where she owned a home for over a decade. “Anguilla is such a special place for me, and I have a deep love for the island, its people and their authentic passion for hospitality,” said Johnson. “The improvements that have already been made are incredible and Salamander is committed to helping realize Richard’s vision of excellence. We look forward to introducing Aurora Anguilla and the beauty of its people to our Salamander loyalists.” With a reputation built upon thoughtful, unexpected amenities, impeccable service and a truly creative approach to the guest experience, Salamander provides innovative and luxurious hospitality that is equal parts comfortable, kind, respectful and welcoming, the company said. Aurora Anguilla is in good company as it joins a Salamander Collection that features the Forbes Five-Star Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Virginia; the legendary Half Moon resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica (the only Forbes Four-Star rated property on the island); Innisbrook Resort in Tampa Bay, Florida, which hosts the annual PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship and Hotel Bennett in Charleston, South Carolina, recently ranked as the top luxury hotel in America by USA Today. In May, the company will assume management of the iconic Aspen Meadows Resort in Aspen, Colorado, providing another world-class destination for Salamander’s guests. The Aurora Anguilla Experience Surrounded by turquoise waters and the shimmering sunsets of the island, Aurora Anguilla offers a variety of accommodation options, including ocean-view Island Suites with wraparound terraces and private Jacuzzis. For larger groups or families, the resort also has stunning three- and five-bedroom villas, as well as private, 6,300-square-feet Estate Homes which include a dedicated butler and a private pool. renowned businessman and owner of Aurora Anguilla
The varied culinary offerings honor the gastronomic heritage of Anguilla by utilizing ingredients grown, caught and raised around the island and marrying them with culinary techniques from around the globe. A defining element of the resort’s food and beverage offerings also comes from its hydroponic farm and orchard. Of the seven restaurants and lounges, D. Richard’s is the newest and the island’s only steakhouse, serving freshly caught seafood and hand-crafted cocktails. This complements the other unique outlets which feature authentic Caribbean flavors and seafood-centric dishes, a casual menu offering sizzling items straight from a wood-burning oven and Italian fare with Anguillan twists to handmade pasta. A newly designed version of the resort’s former storied Japanese restaurant is currently under development and will be reintroduced this summer. Aurora International Golf Club, which features spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea and shoreline, has undergone a comprehensive remastering overseen by Greg Norman Golf Course Design. Schulze engaged Norman directly to work with him on the new chapter of the 18-hole Signature Design championship course, the only golf course on the island, which was created with the goal of being among the best in the world. A nine-hole Short Signature golf course, also designed by Norman and unique to the Caribbean, will be introduced this summer. The first hole opens with panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and the course unfolds with a rich variety of shot angles, distances and carefully integrated design elements to make it playable and fun for accomplished and novice golfers alike. Committed to both wellness and sustainability, the 16-treatment-room spa, one of the largest in the Caribbean, is a serene sanctuary of wellness and revitalization. Set in an idyllic locale, the spa offers treatments that refresh and revitalize, using natural elements from the island paired with refined and traditional techniques. Schulze further plans to improve the Aurora Anguilla experience, including adding a one-of-a-kind entertainment center with waterpark which includes a 500seat amphitheater for live entertainment, and courts for sand volleyball, pickleball, tennis, basketball and bocce ball. Traveling to Anguilla has never been more accessible. Commercial flights to the US mainland are now available, in addition to Aurora Anguilla’s own fleet of private jets. Aurora Anguilla is also easily accessible via a 30-minute ferry ride from Saint Martin. For more information, visit AuroraAnguilla.com and SalamanderHotels.com.

president at Pacsun. “For this capsule, we offer more than a summer wardrobe, we provide all the necessities for a true getaway, while transforming our website and retail locations into getaway destinations.” The apparel and accessories capsule is available now on pacsun.com and in all Pacsun stores, with select locations receiving the full collection inclusive of the lifestyle items. The Downtown Los Angeles and SoHo Flagships will feature larger takeovers throughout the full month of May with fun activities reminiscent of classic boardwalks like claw machines, raffles, photo booths, DJs and more. In-store elements, such as store windows, checkout desks, stairwells and more will be embellished with the monogram pattern, while Pacsun’s website, social media platforms and digital touchpoints will reflect the design. The Etoile Monogram Capsule also made its way into the metaverse as Pacworld players will be able to dress their avatars in the capsule collection and incorporate themed fantasy items into their mall experiences, which will be part of Roblox’s new layered clothing feature. To celebrate the launch, Pacsun hosted a livestream event with model and social media star Mathieu Simoneau, along with a TikTok takeover featuring Emma Chamberlain. venir, the distinctive master-planned development in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida that includes a total of 3,900 homes in gated neighborhoods, is celebrating the opening of the Avenir Clubhouse that will serve the communities in the first stage of the project. Avenir’s expansive 16,000-square-foot Clubhouse is now open and is designed to be the social center of Avenir’s communities. The Avenir Clubhouse is a unique amenity with resort-style indoor and outdoor dining, a spectacular heated swimming pool with waterfalls, a spa, a two-lane lap pool, an immense pool deck with seating areas, firepits, poolside cabanas and pavilions. There are two tot lots, a kid’s zone splash pad outside and a kid’s activity room inside. The design architect and architect of record of the Avenir Clubhouse is Randall Stofft of Randall Stofft Architects of Delray and Naples, Florida. The firm is widely known for designing architecturally significant projects in the Palm Beach area. “Our firm immediately connected with the owners,” said Randall Stofft. “They clearly wanted an
architectural anchor to set Avenir apart and be homogenous with the new developing neighborhoods throughout Avenir.” The building character is timeless, but undeniably modern with classical proportions. “We chose to raise the building site significantly higher from the roadway to create a great visual approach and vistas from all sides. The results of the British-West inspired architecture impress without being overwhelming,” said Stofft. The Clubhouse has a commercial kitchen to support intimate dining and large events that may spill from the ballrooms to the outside for people to embrace the surrounding views and event lawns. The Avenir Clubhouse has a state-of-the-art gym with exercise and locker rooms. Racket sport enthusiasts are delighted with eight tennis courts (six HarTru clay courts and two hard courts) and six pickleball cushioned-surface hard courts — all lighted for night play. Several award-winning homebuilders are active at
Avenir with gated neighborhoods in varying stages of development, including Toll Brothers, Kenco Communities at Avenir, K. Hovnanian Homes and DiVosta. All the communities and amenities are connected by dedicated golf cart lanes, bicycle paths and sidewalks. The public areas and the Clubhouse host many golf cart parking spaces for ease and convenience. With the intention to being a conservation-conscious community, Avenir has earmarked 2,400-acres of its total 4,752-acres to the creation of a nature preserve, Avenir Conservation Area. It wraps the western, northern and northeastern borders of Avenir and serves as a wildlife corridor connecting several natural preserves from Lake Okeechobee to the Atlantic Ocean. Future building at Avenir includes the highly anticipated Panther National, a private championship golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, and 218 luxury homes in the Panther National community with its own clubhouse. Known throughout the Hamptons for its beauty, energy and originality, The White Room features contemporary art with a provocative twist of inspirations and has been voted the best gallery in the Hamptons since its opening in 2015. It is owned by artists and businesswomen Andrea McCaffery and Kat O’Neill, who have years of experience in the creative arena. The gallery’s eclectic portfolio includes pop art, mixed media, photography, sculpture and abstract and figurative painting. Some of the gallery’s world-renowned artists include Russell Young, Nelson de la Nuez, Jane Waterous, Markus Klinko and Mr. Brainwash. In the secondary market, the gallery also features Joe Stefanelli and Sasson Soffer, two illustrious artists from the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. If you are driving on Main Street in Bridgehampton, you can’t miss their sculpture garden in front. Look for Artie, the giant smiley-faced bulldog or the Lamborghini-inspired orange abstract. From May 18 through June 5, the gallery will kick off its summer season with an exhibit that is a celebration of diversity. The Opening Party for the exhibit will take place on May 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will include a DJ spinning funk and blues while patrons and new art appreciators can view the featured artist Markus Klinko’s evocative shots of celebrities like Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian and David Bowie, while also getting a chance to see a sampling of their unique roster of artists. The event will be like an idyllic flight of fine wine, except with fine art, the gallery said. This will include works from Nelson De La Nuez, Punk Me Tender, Jane Waterous, Bob Tabor, Giancarlo Impiglia, Seek One, Linda Colletta, Stuart Yankell, Barbara Cole, Greg Miller, Jack Flo and Lina Condes. Additionally, two of their newest artists, Stephane Gubert from France and Fringe from South Africa, will have work showcased as well. All of these artists are engaging in their executions but are distinctive in their allure, the gallery said. Some elements of art being showcased include pop art, underwater photography, art deco flashback, vibrant abstracts, painting that presents as sculpture, icons of the past and present, emoji sculptures and NFTs. Top it off with a horse and some butterflies and the “flight” of fine art is finished. This exhibit is proof that beauty does indeed lie in the diversity, the gallery said. Other exhibits on view this summer include: • “Forever Young,” Russell Young Solo Exhibit, June 8 through June 26, Opening Reception June 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. • “Flash,” Photography Exhibit featuring fashion photographer Greg Lotus, June 29 through July 24, Opening Reception July 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. • “Beach Life is the Sweet Life,” Nelson De La Nuez Solo Exhibit, July 27 through August 28, Opening Reception July 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Looking forward to other events outside of the gallery in future, they will also be at Art Market Hamptons from August 11 through 14 and at Art Basel Miami in December. The gallery will also, of course, continue to exhibit year-round in their Bridgehampton location as the art world is a lot like NYC, in that it never sleeps.

Breaks Central Park Loop Record and Raises $116k For
Children in Ukraine By Lauren Schuster
I
f asked to describe Oz Pearlman, most people would likely detail his work as a mentalist and his appearances on various talk shows to demonstrate his mind-reading abilities as his most memorable traits. However, this spring, Pearlman has been focusing on two of his other passions: long-distance running and charity. In the perfect opportunity to combine the two, on April 8, Pearlman set out to break the world record for the most loops ever run around Central Park in New York City and asked supporters to donate to charity Save The Children’s Ukraine Relief Fund to demonstrate their support. “The event was a massive success,” Pearlman said. “The pre-existing record for number of loops run around Central Park in a day was 16 laps; I ran 19 laps, which totaled 116 miles [raising] $116,000

dollars for Save The Children Ukraine Relief Fund. Every penny is going to that charity, and they are doing tremendous work for the kids being affected by the horrific war and violence taking place right now in Ukraine, so that’s why I did all this.” This is far from Pearlman’s first long-distance running endeavor; he has won seven marathons and participated in countless other races of varying lengths. After he initially planned to run a 100mile race in North Carolina in early April, his work schedule changed, and he needed to be in New York during that time instead. Having already started training for the 100-mile run, Pearlman began thinking of how he could channel his abilities to do some good for others. “I had been training for that so hard, that I said, ‘I can’t let all this fitness go to waste,’ and I decided to
run around Central Park for a day,” Pearlman said. “Initially, I was going to run around Central Park and raise money for a charity related to Ukraine; that was my first thought. And then the rest of it kind of came together when I looked up the fact that there is this sort of world record it’s known as an FKT (or Fastest Known Time) that a guy had done before, and it got tremendous press. The Central Park Loop is very iconic; those 6.1 miles around [are] probably one of the most famous, if not the most famous urban place to run in the world. It’s also where the New York City Marathon, which is one of the biggest marathons in the world, ends.” Pearlman was delighted by the excited response from the press and the public when he announced his plans. “It’s not easy; there are some big hills there. But

you’ve got skyscrapers, you’ve got nature, you’ve got people, you’ve just got everything you could want in a run that’s just about 10 kilometers, so something about it inspired people,” Pearlman said. “I guess the press got behind it with the fact that so many people feel powerless with what’s going on in the Ukraine and want to find a way to give, and the best way to give right now seems to be with your money. I looked up a bunch of charities, and I’m the parent of three young children, so what’s happening to the kids is really what broke my heart. I decided on Save The Children; they’re very highly rated, four stars across the board by all the charity watchers [and] the vast, vast majority … [of what] you give goes right to the people in need and not administration or parties. It’s really a very efficient charity,” he said. While his charity selection seemed an easy choice, his preparation process was not as simple.
“Initially I was training for a 100-mile race and that is a unique beast; it’s not really like a marathon, which is 26.2 miles,” Pearlman said. “A marathon, to me, actually sounds like a very quick, short race. I know that sounds nuts! But with a 100-mile race, there are a lot more things that can go wrong: your stomach, the heat, blisters, chafing.” That contrasts with a marathon, which Pearlman can complete in just under two-and-a-half hours. “I can kind of ‘make it.’ Even if something goes wrong it’s not a big deal,” he said. “But if you’re going to run in Central Park for 19 hours, from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., a lot more things factor in. Nutrition is a big one — that you’re eating enough. During the run, I only eat energy gels and I drink Gatorade and water; I don’t do solid meals because my stomach doesn’t do too well with those. Dealing with the heat, dealing with everything that can go wrong, I
was training upwards of 100 miles per week getting ready for this. I would go out five, six, seven days a week if I could pull it off — any which way, I ran 15, 20 miles a day. My longest run leading up to this was 50 miles.” During his training period, Pearlman was frequently on the road doing shows, while also balancing family life. “A lot of this took place while I was on the road,” Pearlman said. “I land in Palm Springs, I do a 40mile run; I fly to Omaha, I do a 25-mile run. That’s kind of the story of my life as a parent of three young kids; when I’m home it’s much harder to say ‘Honey, I’m going to go run for four hours,’ but when I’m on the road I can find ways to squeeze it in better.” Pearlman’s donations came from a combination MAY/JUNE 2022 • MANN ABOUT TOWN

People donated 20 bucks, and I know somebody that donated $20,000. People really felt very strongly about this and wanted to give, and during the day, almost the entire 18-plus hours I was running, people were with me, kind of Forrest Gump-style. People just saw it and were like ‘Can I join you?’ and I’d go ‘Yeah, come join the party!’” This is far from the last of Pearlman’s endeavors to combine his love of running and charity. “I am definitely chasing the next high. This was so much fun that I’m definitely doing it again,” Pearlman said. But it was about more than fun. “Knowing that we helped people in need, and that me doing something as silly as running around Central Park for a day actually led to real good in the world — especially with so many events that are just so horrible — felt really great,” he said. “I think that’s why people latched onto this and why the story has gotten so much press coverage. All you get is bad news nowadays, so if you can go out there and try and do something good, I think it inspires people.” Pearlman also specified that organizing the event was far less of an undertaking than people may think, and that it doesn’t take a lot of time to make a big impact. “I literally came up with it over the course of two days,” Pearlman said. “I’ve got running shoes, I can go buy Gatorade and some gels, and that was it. Then I had some friends and family that really came along to support me. My wife went above and beyond. My friend Dustin Emrani was my crew chief. He was incredible, every minute helping me out, cheering me on, doing my social media, getting people to donate more money, and this all just came together.” Pearlman encourages everyone to find their own unique ways to give to charity, no matter how small or how large. “It’s the best feeling in the world to give to others, it truly is,” Pearlman said. Pearlman is planning another similar charity run with an additional fun mentalist twist for this upcoming August, with more details to follow soon. Introducing Art Is
An NFT-Driven Platform to Help Artists Navigate The Metaverse
Interdimensional Spaces by Lindsey Price
F
ounded by a group of futurists with a passion for fine art and specialized expertise in blockchain technology, Art Is is an NFT (non-fungible token)-driven platform offering a full suite of services designed to help artists navigate the digital and physical seachange disrupting the art market today. The group helps artists amplify their message to a highly engaged, vast global audience through specialized NFT minting services, documentary film profiles, digital exhibition space and a network of gallery spaces in New York City, Malibu and Beverly Hills. The platform’s already established partnerships include Pilar Zeta, Malik Roberts, Michael Christopher Brown, Tom Franco and more, with the first Art Is exhibition with Lindsey Price having taken place in Malibu in April.
ARTS & AFFAIRS Blue for Many Reasons by Malik Roberts
“Our ultimate goal is to democratize art curation and through blockchain technology, support artists with a global platform that allows them to showcase their work how, when and where they choose,” said Art Is Founder and CEO Gabriel Paxton, a serial entrepreneur, blockchain specialist and virtual reality expert. “Through Art Is, we are proud to onboard artists into the Metaverse, minting and exhibiting their NFT artwork using the power of the blockchain and amplifying their work to a highly engaged international audience like never before.” Art Is Collaborations Art is no longer just displayed and experienced at the local institutional level, which is why Art Is has broadened its scope beyond its physical exhibition spaces in New York City with Allouche Gallery, and on the West Coast in Malibu and Beverly Hills. These venues represent just one facet of the group’s dual digital-physical platforms. The company specializes in onboarding artists to Web3 and the Metaverse, taking a collaborative approach with each partner to conceptualize and produce NFT applications and entire digital collections that best reflect their artistic vision. The group’s digital hub serves as an NFT minting portal for artists, an NFT marketplace, virtual catalog and gallery, with a membership component that will offer significant value, rewards and utilities associated with Art Is NFT collections. Hunger Pains by Malik Roberts
Regardless of an individual’s chosen medium, Art Is Co-Founder and Head of Talent Dom Wojnarowski said, “Art Is takes an inclusive approach to artist curation and collaboration. We seek to work with creative collaborators whose highly individual worldviews shine through cohesive bodies of work, whether through traditional visual art forms, avant-garde installations, digital creations or performing arts.” The Power of Narrative The NFT-driven Art Is platform also offers a measure of censorship protection to vulnerable artists working to effect social change at the grassroots level. “At Art Is, we believe that art is inseparable from narrative. Each artist has a story to tell,” David Li, Art Is head of content and strategy and former HBO executive, said. “That is why our team is producing original documentary programming to help each artist broadcast their vision to the world, and in doing so, exponentially boost their positive impact.” Each episode in the dynamic eight-part series will follow the classic “hero’s journey,” revealing their creative processes, core beliefs and unique community influence, while challenging assumptions and the status quo. The Art Is documentary series will be presented at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, and following its debut, the series will engage audiences across multiple channels. Further Art Is exhibitions and film premiers will be announced soon. For more information, visit their website discoverartis.com or their Instagram @discoverartis.

Artist Sonya Sklaroff poses with Fran Drescher at the VIP opening celebration for Sklaroff’s new art exhibit and book launch
D
uring the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in New York City, contemporary American painter and New York City resident Sonya Sklaroff was searching for hope and inspiration, and decided to do what she knew best: create art. This resulted in her new collection of pieces titled “A Love Letter to New York City.” She was recently selected to showcase six of these colorful oil on canvas paintings on all 3,500 of LinkNYC’s digital billboards around New York City during the month of April. The six vivid and whimsical paintings of the city that are featured were all completed during the pandemic last year. They are meant to exemplify feelings of hope, promise, joy and renewal even during the dark days of the pandemic. She has also launched a coordinating limited edition book, also titled “A Love Letter To New York City” and has an exhibit with pieces from the collection at the Algonquin Hotel. “My work has always been connected with New York, it’s where I live, where I work, and where I find my inspiration,” Sklaroff said. “I always try to portray the most authentic version of the city. Not the quintessential views of the skyline but a more personal viewpoint: the side streets, small cafes, little hidden parks, people enjoying their daily lives.” Seeing the way her city was so deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic was difficult for Sklaroff, as it was for so many people, but she never lost hope in her city’s beauty or resilience. “The pandemic was one of the most tumultuous times in the city, so how could an artist not respond
to that?” Sklaroff said. “This series came about because I was always recording my city. These paintings were my love letter to the city that I know so well and I adore.” When Sklaroff’s work was chosen to be showcased by LinkNYC on its screens throughout the city, she was ecstatic to share her experience and her love through art with the city’s residents. “It was like having a gallery show with eight million people in attendance each day for two weeks,” Sklaroff said. “I’d see people rushing about without noticing them at all, but others would stop and pause and look. It was gratifying to see my colorful, hopeful views of New York on every street corner in the city.” Wanting to share even more of her artwork, Sklaroff also put together her corresponding book. “This book is a compilation of over 100 of my paintings, my drawings and my works on paper of the city, and it’s interspersed with quotes about New York by famous literary and artistic figures such as Dorothy Parker and E.B. White,” Sklaroff said. “The Algonquin contacted me to offer me a show in their famous Oak Room to celebrate my work and to launch this new artist book. The Algonquin has a long history of supporting culture and supporting the arts in New York, so I felt honored to be a part of such history.” Sklaroff’s own history with creating art has been a lifelong one. “I can’t remember not making things,” Sklaroff
said. “As a kid I used to find rocks on the ground that looked like there were faces on them and I’d make them into little toys. I’d play with bugs and make little clay houses for them, and I was always drawing and painting. I was lucky enough to have a very supportive family who never questioned my intense desire to create, no matter how weird my projects were. I don’t think I chose to be a professional artist; it wasn’t a conscious decision. I think art ultimately chose me; it’s like I didn’t have a choice.” Now, with the city’s liveliness truly resurfacing, Sklaroff has her eyes set on brighter days ahead. “I’ve seen New York go through difficult times before and reemerge stronger every time,” Sklaroff said. “This was an excruciating time, but I saw people survive and thrive. Now it’s springtime in the city again; it’s a gorgeous sunny day in the city, and you can feel the energy and the hope. It’s palpable.” While memories of the early days of the pandemic seem more distant with each passing sunny day, Sklaroff is far from finished documenting her beautiful and resilient city in her work. “I’m starting a new body of work based on my continued experiences in the city, depicting how people are continuing to move on from the pandemic,” Sklaroff said. “I haven’t decided yet if I’ll be exhibiting this new series late this year or early next year, so I’ll keep you posted!” For more information about Sklaroff, visit sonyasklaroff.com. O
ne thing that COVID-19 hasn’t ruined: the beloved Housing Works annual event, Fashion for Action, which will go on in 2020. The NYC non-profit organization provides advocacy, support and lifesaving services to those impacted by homelessness and HIV/AIDS, and this year’s event will be a multi-channel fashion extravaganza. From November 10 through 14, Housing Works will gather celebrities and fashion icons online and in-store. “We knew we had to adapt to the moment and offer virtual participation to ensure everyone’s safety,” said Elizabeth Koke, creative director. “Typically, our event is a big, instore party with shopping and drinking and garments flying around the room. We had to pivot, so we came up with a schedule of events to keep some of the fun and engagement but with necessary social distance.” The festivities will open with a virtual talk on November 10, followed by a three-day Fashion For Action shopping event that will kick off November 12 with a series of ticketed instore options that include VIP, early-access and timed sweepstyle shopping. The sale is open to the public on November 13-14. The Housing Works Thrift Shop flagship location in Chelsea will host the in-store portion of the event with all sale proceeds benefiting Housing Works. The sale will feature menswear and womenswear, shoes, handbags, accessories and jewelry from brands including Cesar Galindo, Libertine, M.Gemi, Everlane, Indochino, Ulla Johnson, Issey Miyake, Nautica, Swarovski, True Religion, Giuseppe Zannotti and more. The designer merchandise will be complemented by an exclusive selection of one-of-a-kind donations highlighting signature looks from the last three decades in fashion, handpicked by renowned brands, celebrity stylists and fashion personalities that include Mercedes Bass, Mickey Boardman, Baby Phat, Patricia Field, Ryan Gale, Phil
Gomez, David Hart, Alison Hernon, Logan Horne, Terrell Jones, Memsor Kamarake, Natalie Kates, Kimora Lee Simmons Design, Anahita Moussavian, Joel Moore, Mia Moretti, Private Policy, Scott Shapiro, Christian Siriano and Sarah Wasilak. Plus, in honor of its 30th anniversary, Housing Works is introducing two exciting components: sweep-style shopping and virtual fashion talks. With a Sweep ticket purchase, patrons can shop instore for 5 minutes and take home everything that can fit, regardless of value, in a limited-edition Housing Works 30th Anniversary Patricia Clarkson canvas tote bag. The event attracts some of the biggest names in fashion, including event chairs André Leon Talley, Kimora Lee Simmons, Nigel Barker, Billy Porter, Laura Brown and Patricia Clarkson. “We have been so grateful to have the support of so many incredible celebrities, taste makers and thought leaders year after year,” Koke added. “We’re especially thrilled to welcome back the brilliant Patricia Clarkson, who has joined us for many years as the host of this annual event.” Proceeds from Fashion for Action support Housing Works’ ongoing advocacy and integrated services, including work to address the opioid epidemic and prevent overdose deaths.
