MVAC Connect Term 3 2025

After two terms at MVAC, my secondmenthascometoanendso it is time for me to step aside and walk away; to head back to Newcastle. I do so with a great deal of sadness However, I am comforted by the fact that I handover to Catherine Eady who will, I am sure, do a great job of leadingtheschool.

When I arrived at MVAC in May I did notknowwhattoexpect.Tomyjoy,I found a school with a fine body of teachers and a wonderful student cohort MVAC students want to do the right thing, to learn in the classroom and to get involved in schoolactivities.

We managed the traumatic floods in May and the school closure. Afterwards, it was great to see Year 6 and Year 12, the senior students in their respective schools, come back first to help us plan the smooth returnoftheirpeersandtoorganise a hugely successful collection of food, clothing and toys for those badlyaffected.

We have seen many fine music and dancing performances this year, in many settings For example, my first Assembly was treated to a performance by the Junior School dancing groups who went onto to excel in the Taree Eisteddfod. More recently we were treated to a delightful evening of Music at the HSC Showcase Evening. The crowning glory of this was the very firstnominationofanMVACstudent for the Encore HSC Performance –congratulationstoIsaacWright!

I have had the pleasure of walking into many classrooms over the past two terms to observe the fine teaching and learning in progress. As you know, we followtheLearningPowerApproach, andIamstruckbythemanyexamplesof engagement in learning, resourcefulness, collaboration and resilience that I have seen. My personal highlights are the times spent watching the exciting learningintheJuniorSchool,ScienceWeek2025andtheamazingvanderGraf Generator (it’s a pity my hair isn’t long Enough!), any visits to Music and Art classesandtheshortperiodoftimeIwasabletoteachHistoryto9V

SRC. SRC.

The SRC focuses on creating a collaborative and welcoming environment, encouraging students to share their opinions and concerns, and addressingissuesthatimpacttheirschool experience. Although they are a small group, they aspire to expand and include morevoicesintheirefforts.

The SRC holds meetings every Monday at lunchtime in G6, inviting all students to contributetheirideasandsuggestions.

Ms Sally Woodhouse, the SRC coordinator, manages the group ' s activities and helps guide members in presenting their ideas to the school executives. Each student joins with different goals, including developing leadership skills and empowering other student bodies within the school Some aim to initiate changes, suchasrevisingtheuniformpolicy.

When asked why students should join the SRC, Sally highlighted the opportunity for their voices to be heard By joining, students build leadership skills, improve communication with peers and teachers, and represent their school at different events.

The SRC may be small, but they are mighty. With just a few members, they share the benefits of getting involved and the potential for future programs. Sally confirmed that joining the SRC indeed allowsstudentstohavetheirvoicesheard

The SRC were behind the R U OK? Day celebrations that took place on Thursday 11 September. They distributed yellow ribbons to signify support and provided conversation cards for students to ask their peers, "Are you okay?" This initiative aimstospreadawarenessthatit'sokayto seekhelpwhenneeded.

The theme for Book week this year was Book an Adventure. I always love their themesbecausethey'requitebroad,so lotsofthingscanfitunderthatWehad competitionsgoing.

What were some of the competitions that you organised on the ground at MVAC?

Okay. Well, there's a colouring competition for the younger ones. There was a grid. They had to copy the drawing into a grid and then colour. For the bit older ones, I had poetry, story writing. There was also a passport one, so they could fill in a passport.

Whatdoyouthinkthemostfunthing isaroundBookWeek?

I think the most fun thing hasn't been mentioned yet, and it's, the most fun for all. I mean who doesn't like dressingup? It'stheCharacterParade forsure.

Ah, okay. It would have to be, when myselfandtwootherstaffdressedup as The Witches, out of Roald Dahl's The Witches. I've got a photo, and the kidslovelookingatthat.

Every year, we have amazing experiences through the library. I believe this takes the library beyond its doors and into the entire school. Is thatyourintention?

Oh yes, we have been getting Meerkat Productions back each year, and this year ' s was really good, The Garden of Broken Things. That was quite an emotional story Experiences that engage students through literature of allkindsisimportant

But now I want to know about you. Whyalibrarian?

My sister's a librarian. My husband also is That's how we met So, ended up going down that path. It's all in the family, really

What do you love about being a librarian?

I love seeing kids' reactions when they find that perfect book. Even those who think they don’t like reading often just need the right one. " I still, to this day, stand by that, that there's a book out thereforeverybody.

What would you love every child to experiencefromthelibrary?

Well, I'd love every, each child to be reading

Waratah at MVAC WaratahatMVAC

MVAC held the first Cultural Immersion Professional Development Day. It was a privilege to hear from our Biripi knowledge holders. All MVAC staff had thechancetoconnectwiththeirvibrant traditionsandstrongtiestoCountry.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Biripi Elder Uncle Russ Saunders, Gathang languageholderJeremySaunders, and Biripi artist Joedie Saunders. Spending thedayonCountry, discoveringsounds, landmarks, and traditional practices was a wonderful opportunity, thanks to the efforts of the Waratah team at MVAC.

Staffparticipatedinatraditionaldance, bushtuckerwalkstolearnaboutnative foods, and workshops in art and weaving. These activities offered culturalinsightsandlanguagelearning, helping to connect with the revitalised Gathanglanguage.

Thisyear’sNAIDOCthemeis:

“The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.”

Thisthemeinvitesusalltoreflectonthe powerful role young people play in continuing culture, in healing the past, andinshapingthefuture.

The Traditional Dance crew performance reminded us that culture lives on through rhythm, story, and movement.

Cultural immersion focuses on respect and giving back. Engaging with the community as learners and allies, rather than just consumers of culture, made this a valuable experience for manyMVACstaffmembers.

The MVAC NAIDOC Assembly takes place during Term 3 every year. It is a time to come together and reflect on the NAIDOC theme and hear from our specialguests.

Through song we reflected upon the theme as the Year 11 Music students performed ‘My Island Home’ and ‘WaitingontheWorldtoChange’.

One of the oldest instruments in the world – the didgeridoo, sound connects ustoCountry, tostory, andtoceremony It was a pleasure to witness a performance by a group of proud and passionateplayers: Uncle Russ, Zane Heemskerk, Bronson Waites, Todd Saunders, Cole Saunders, andMylesMcCarthy.

As Term 3 draws to a close, we are reminded that endings often mark the beginning of something new. This term has been incredibly busy traditionally oneofourmostdemanding andyet, ithasalsobeendeeplyrewarding.

Yesterday’s Valedictory was a heartfelt farewell to our Year 12 2025 graduates. Resilienceisthefocus

As we come to the end of another wonderful term at MVAC it has been pleasing to see that the Grow Your Mind wellbeing program has now become wellandtrulyembeddedinthecultureoftheJuniorSchool.

This term our students have been focusing on being ‘resilient’ learners in all areas of their school life This focus on being resilient has allowed them to centretheirattentionontheGrowYourMindcharacterstrengthsthatrelateto this LPA (Learning Power Approach) disposition, which have included being tactful, compassionate, generous, and patient. Throughout Term 3 we have challenged our students to develop these character strengths through their interactions with students and staff, when faced with challenges in their learning, and when trying out for representative teams. It has been wonderful to see so many of our students embracing the opportunity to muster up the courage required to work their way through challenging situations in the classroomandontheplayground.

During Term 4 we will again be working to embed the Grow Your Mind character strengths into all areas of Junior School life. Next term we will be encouraging our students to be more ‘resourceful’, a trait that is underpinned bytheprocessofbeing‘READY’(aroutinethatJuniorSchoolstudentsregularly gothroughpriortoenteringtheclassroom)

We look forward to having a strong finish to the year in the Junior School by continuing to provide opportunities for our students to flourish academically, spirituallyandculturally.

SCIENCE

Mrs Whight outlined the schedule for the week, with each day dedicated to a different branch of science. Among the favourite activities was the "elephant toothpaste"experiment.TheVande Graaff generator was a huge hit to demonstratestaticelectricity.

The Science department organised fun activities all week during National Science Week to inspire students from Prep throughtoYear12.

The initiative aims to bring hands-on learning to students.

"It's something we run every year, " Mrs Wesley explained. "Lastyear,MrsWhightranaday of activities in the hall, and this year we decided to host daily activities in the science lab. We’ve also partnered with Stile for a chance to win some great prizes."

With such an engaging lineup, teachers and students discovered the wonders of sciencethroughouttheweek.

IntheearlyhoursofThursday18SeptemberwhiletheManningValleyslept, a small but mighty group of young hopefuls loaded into the College’s 24seater bus and made their way to the Central Coast in search of footballingglory.

Throughout the day, the team were extremely competitive, experiencing the joy of victory, the pain of defeat, and the emptiness of a number of drawn matches. The weeks of hard work that the players had put into preparing for the event was made obvious by the team’s strong passing gameandwillingnesstosupportoneanotheronandoffthefield.

While the players returned to the College later that afternoon with no trophy or medals around their necks, they did return knowing that throughout the day they had at all times embodied The MVAC Way by being Collaborative, Engaged, Resilient and Resourceful team members who went above and beyond to achieve their own version of footballing glory.
