We get lot of enquiries about solar panels. Though there are lot of information available , We thought we will simplify the explanation and give basic information about solar powering your home. Please be noted that the information we give is only a guideline. Actual implementation depends upon the type of panels, solar radiation, battery type etc. Let us begin to look at the 2 basic criteria to look into while choosing your solar panel. They are: • The Appliances. Those devices that you wish to run on solar power, their number of working hours and the respective power they draw. • The battery bank. This is all about how much energy your battery can store and the therefore the number of batteries you require. How to calculate you battery power storage capacity? Battery capacity is measured in Amp Hours (e g 17AH). You need to convert this to Watt Hours by multiplying the AH figure by the battery voltage (e g 12V). For a 17AH, 12V battery the Watt Hours figure is 17 x 12 = 204WH

This means the battery could supply 204W for 1 hour, or 102W for 2 hours i.e. the more energy you take, the faster the battery discharges. How to calculate you appliances’ power consumption? The power consumption of appliances is given in Watts (eg 21″ fluorescent light, 13W). To calculate the energy you will use over time, just multiply the power consumption by the hours of use. For example, a 13W light fitting should be switched ON for 2 hours, it will consume 13 x 2 = 26WH from the battery. This exercise has to be repeated for all devices that that are to be solar powered and the resulting Wattage power should be added up for total consumption of energy. A Simple excel sheet can be used to list the appliances, their numbers, their wattage consumption per hour and the number of hours they are required be ON. Now comes the decision of selecting the right solar panels for your home. How to choose the right solar panel for your home? The power generation capacity of a solar panel is given in Watts. ( for example 10 W, 100 W etc). You can find this information in the panels’ technical specification. The number of hours of sunshine a panel is exposed depends upon the geographical location of the solar panel installation. Assuming, a location where there is constant sunshine for 4 hours, one can calculate the total energy a panel can supply to a battery bank by multiplying the Watts by the hours exposed to sunshine, then multiply the result by 0.85 (this factor allows for natural system losses). For e.g, a 10 W solar panel with 4 hours of exposure to sun, can generated 10 * 4 * 0.85 = 34 WH of energy to a battery bank.
