e continue scouting and supporting the new generations with this special issue of MANINTOWN – HOT CHILD IN THE CITY, giving particular space to the new voices of the Italian music scene. This focus on scouting began several years ago, but has taken on a new form today both digitally and in printed magazines. The inspiration for this issue starts from Nick Gilder’s song that was an immediate hit in the 1970s and was also recently taken up again, whose refrain remains etched in the minds of many: “HOT CHILD IN THE CITY RUNNIN’ WILD AND LOOKIN’ PRETTY” We worked on the six covers of the issue starting precisely from this combo of “wild & pretty”, “sexiness & new coolness”: three dedicated to

, editor s letter

new voices in music and three to faces in cinema. The first cover features

Tananai (stage name of Alberto Cotta Ramusino), who after participating

in Sanremo has won the public over, becoming one of the trendiest, most

followed artists by youth. His single “Sesso occasionale” has already been certified platinum and his tour has quickly sold out. Tananai’s unconventional character was captured by the fashion piece in pop tones by Leandro Emede and Nick Cerioni. Then there’s Fulminacci (real name Filippo Uttinacci), singer-songwriter whose name is beginning to spread among the general public and is discussed in the editorial by Maddalena Petrosino and Simone Folli. And finally a mix of art, culture and music, the combined passions of Ema Stokholma: an eclectic and absolutely charismatic figure clearly seen in the evocative images of Davide Musto and Alfredo Fabrizio. These are the highlights of our musical covers, but there are also many Voices in this issue. And we certainly haven’t neglected cinema, our other great passion and focus of the Faces section. For our Cover Stories, we chose to shoot Matilde Gioli and Maria Chiara Giannetta together for the first time, two actresses who represent the new face of Italian cinema and are amazing examples of female empowerment. And then there’s Giacomo Ferrara, who after the success of "Suburra" is ready to take on new challenges in the film "Ghiaccio". Last but not least, the very young Francesco Gheghi (born in 2002) with real potential you can bet on. He’s currently being noticed in the film “Il filo invisibile” where he plays Leone, the teenage son of two fathers (Filippo Timi and Francesco Scianna), and we’ll also soon see him in the film Piove by Paolo Strippoli. COVER STORY

TANANAI

THE NEW MUSICAL PHENOMENON ADORED BY THE NEW GENERATIONS.

Tananai (stage name of Alberto Cotta Ramusino) won the audience over after having participated in Sanremo, quickly becoming one of the most popular artists among youth. After Sanremo, his single “Sesso occasionale” became a certified platinum record. Born in 1995 in Milan, Alberto has been passionate about electronic music since he was a teenager and soon began producing his own music, publishing his first album “To Discover and Forget” in 2017 using the pseudonym Not for us. He then began to explore various musical genres and also write in Italian, while still mainly dealing with production. In 2019 he emerged as a true singer-songwriter with his new artistic name Tananai, and in 2020 he released his first EP entitled “Piccoli boati”. Alberto himself told us: “The first EP arose from my desire to talk about what was happening in my life, because I believe that the daily life of each and every one of us is very special in its own way. So I tried to convey my days and my love stories, my disappointments

and moments when I was absorbed by the music I made. With my past as an electronic music producer, I had to learn to write and unlearn to produce. And I talked about what I knew: my everyday life”. In 2021 his career took a new turn with the single “BABY GODDAMN”, which also became a certified platinum record and with which he is now at the top of the Spotify Italy Top50 ranking. In 2021 he also collaborated with likes of Fedez and Jovanotti, participating in Sanremo Giovani with the song “Exaggerated”, thanks to which he became one of the three winners. 2022 began with his participation in the 72nd Sanremo Festival where he presented “Sesso occasionale”, a song full of irony and positivity. His participation in the Festival – despite various criticism – gave him great visibility, so much so that a few days after the end of the competition his single joined the Top 10 among the most listened songs of Spotify Italy, with “BABY GODDAMN” also climbing the rankings to

reach the top 50. And Alberto confesses: “The song 'Sesso occasionale' came to me in a very natural way during a session in the studio. It came out as a continuation of ‘Exaggerated’ - the song I brought to Sanremo Giovani - and immediately engaged us, so we worked until the deadline to send it. I didn’t know what to expect after Sanremo. I sort of improvised, focusing only on emanating a positive energy and being able to go back to singing on a stage in front of a real audience”. A success that continues today with his first Italian Tour that has already sold out for many dates, in barely any time. “By being able to play live in front of as many people as possible, my most secret wishes are coming true. And finally after seeing my dreams halted so many times, realising that it’s finally going to happen... fills me with an overwhelming sense of enthusiasm”.

TALENT AS A DISCIPLINE: THE STORY OF

Francesco Motta, aka Motta, is one of the best-known singer-songwriters on the Italian music scene. Born in Pisa in 1986, he made his debut as singer and drummer in 2006 with the punk and new wave band Criminal Jockers. In 2013 he studied composition for film at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome and composed soundtracks for films and documentaries. His career as a soloist began in 2016 with the release of his first album “La fine dei vent’anni” for which he composed lyrics, music and arrangements, and which earned him the Targa Tenco. The two singles “Ed è quasi come essere felice” and “La nostra ultima canzone” of 2018 anticipated the release of his second studio album, “Vivere o morire”, with which he once again earned the prestigious award best album of the year. Motta participated in the 2019 Sanremo Festival with “Dov’è l’Italia”, a song with social connotations about migrants, winning the evening of duets together with Nada.

MUSIC WITH AN ARTSY TWIST, UNVEILING

GEMELLO The first of the romantics, but certainly not the last. Gemello had already got us used to nostalgia and melancholy in unsuspected times. He snuck them in among the hardcore shells of songs that made history together with TruceKlan and In the Panchine. He painted them on canvas, tangled up in the dense details of his pictures. That’s because his is a long love story between two different kinds of art, rap and painting, i.e., between Gemello and Andrea Ambrogio. And so it happens that in New York or Miami, those who buy a painting by Andrea often don’t know that there’s also a rap artist behind the painter. Gemello talks about himself without any constraints or denial. He talks about his last album, "La Quiete", about the times of "Ministero dell’Inferno", about the rap scene that is perhaps maturing better than that of pop, about the label he’s been given as a misunderstood genius. Maybe that’s the only one that he appreciates, and the only one possible one, for a person that has been making art on the sidelines for twenty years.

50

@SIMONEBELLIAGENCY

He doesn’t have heroes, nor does he want them, because the real world is not the one Disney showed him when he was a kid. Perhaps that’s exactly where the disenchantment that he brings to his lyrics starts: Articolo 31 would sing that life isn’t a movie, and Bresh tells us once again that it’s not time for myths and legends, that we can’t even believe the ancient Greeks anymore. There were instead three people in his life that made him who he is today: his parents and De André. “I see virility in a man like him, in his awareness”, he confides to me while talking about his social role models, about his latest album 'Oro Blu', and about the people that raised and inspired him. When people refer to him, they use the term “cantautorap” (singer-songwriter-rapper), a term he doesn’t particularly like, and he does have a point. However, it is a fact that Andrea Brasi, a.k.a. Bresh, manages to convey peaks of self-reflection, social analysis, and a brave model of masculinity in his artistic output. And that is one of the most powerful sides of his music.

Born Federica Ferracuti, in Fermo (Marche) in 1994, Hu is a multifaceted artist: a singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and sound technician, passionate about music from an early age, with a degree from the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro. Her stage name, taken from the Egyptian divinity who is neither man nor woman, reflects her individual style, fluid and free from boundaries. Through her melodious voice, Hu combines urban tracks with electronic and pop contaminations. She first rose to prominence in 2020 by taking part in the AmaSanremo show, where she performed her song “Occhi Niagara”, and standing out for her talent. After taking an increasingly experimental direction, she then released the singles “End” and “Millemila”. Together with Highsnob, she took part in the 2022 edition of the Sanremo Festival with “Abbi cura di te”, a song that combines rock, electronic and ambient music. Her first official album, “Numeri primi” was released in March and features collaborations with the La Spezia rapper Highsnob and Francesca Michielin.

OPINIONS

FASHION & MUSIC: THE ART OF STYLING

f

text by valeria oppenheimer

ashion and music are two sides of the same coin, two universes of meaning which dialogue and create a hybrid with one another. We are always led to consider them as a single entity, and perhaps we wouldn’t even be able to imagine one disconnected from the other. Artists such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga have taught us that the right image can define, if not build, an entire character, just as much as their talent. Besides, many scholars have explored this connection, most notably the anthropologist Ted Polhemus, who often stressed how “Over the course of history, the musician has been a figure to watch, besides being listened to”. Thus music and fashion are two forms of communication, two actual languages. Now more than ever, the visual package of musical talents is manufactured behind the scenes, and behind this process lie stylists, professional figures capable of bringing life to imaginaries of strong emotional impact, which powerfully attract our gaze.

62

Achille Lauro Ph: Leandro Manuel Emede

“Above all, dressing a person means knowing their true essence. That is where everything starts. I see clothing as a bridge between different cultural areas and physicality: only when I manage to build solid bridges is my work done”. These are the words Susanna Ausoni, celebrity styling queen in Italy, describes her profession that has led her to collaborate with the biggest artists in music and showbiz. Ausoni has a long career behind her, first working for MTV in the 90s, and currently being the creator of looks for stars of the calibre of Mahmood, Noemi, Elisa and Francesca Michielin.

Nicolò “Nick” Cerioni, a creative visionary who often uses irony and surprise, had his professional training precisely with Ausoni. He has collaborated with Jovanotti for 10 years. Cerioni’s aesthetic signature is surely high-impact and often controversial; not coincidentally, he is indeed behind many of Achille Lauro’s, including that by Gucci which he wore at the 2020 edition of the Sanremo Festival, an unforgettable tulle, crystal-studded jumpsuit.

La Rappresentante di Lista

Blanco Ph: Roberto Graziano Moro

He is also the person behind Måneskin’s glam-rock aesthetics, as well as the new trend that Orietta Berti has recently taken up; “Orietta is a free, open-minded woman, she is our Lady Gaga”, he commented, surely a daring comparison which however highlights the irony behind such a makeover.

Sometimes a change in image can put an artist’s career into turbo mode. As one of the most requested stylists in the music biz, Ramona Tabita knows this quite well. She is behind Elodie’s metamorphosis from Amici alum to femme fatale, as well as Ghali’s frequent collaborator for years.

One of the biggest new names in the field is Lorenzo Oddo, a.k.a. Mr. Lollo, fashion designer who was part of the Marco de Vincenzo’s team for years, as well as Levante’s go-to stylist. “Claudia is an expressive, extraordinary force, she’s like a blank page that paints itself through clothing, in different colours each time. She’s got exceptional charisma, she can wear anything without it overpowering her image”, he says. It is precisely during a Levante concert that Oddo met Veronica Lucchesi and Dario Mangiaracina, a.k.a. La Rappresentante di Lista, whose image he also curated at the latest edition of the Sanremo Festival. “When I heard the song, I instantly thought of putting two characters on

the stage; we spent months in the Moschino archives looking for the right pieces that would help us represent the song’s themes visually. The record is apparently light, fun, but at the same time, it compels us to think about the world around us. We opted for looks that were apparently playful, but that would also convey a deep message, high-impact outfits that would perfectly complement the narrative. Styling starts from the mind, there has to be some thought behind it”. If we will remember Blanco’s cloaks and light blouses from the latest Sanremo Festival, we have Silvia Ortombina, a.k.a. Tiny Idols, to thank, who’s collaborated with the artist for years. “I wanted to translate carnality into simple elegance, to represent the body rather than the spirit, to represent a lucid dream that lives in an authentic, real feeling. Pierpaolo Piccioli has always had the ability to superbly translate that kind of aesthetics, and I was honoured to collaborate with the Valentino team, starting precisely with the Maison’s statements: cloak and chiffon. I wanted to give life to a powerful message by combining embroidery and tattoos, repainting the body in a precious, but simple way at the same time, affirming that fashion is not a question of trends, but style”. Who can argue with that?

“I am a curious person, always looking for new stimuli and new points of view from which to observe the world and myself. And I’m complex: I’m white, I’m black, but I’m also purple and red.

I hate labels. Just the thought that any definition could limit the way I am suffocates me. I like the idea of ‘dressing up’ my moods, of always expressing myself fearlessly, rather with pride and a hint of vanity, staying true to all the shades of identity that coexist within me. Michele Matera, aka Highsnob, is age 37 and was born in Avellino and raised in La Spezia. He is one of the most successful artists in the Italian rap scene. With a turbulent past, he founded the duo Bushwaka together with Italian rapper Samuel Heron in 2013 and released “Pandamonium”, an album published by the Newtopia label. After this experiment, he embarked on a solo career and in June 2015 released his first single “Harley Quinn”, a gold record in which he fused trap with the sounds of classic rap. Anticipated by the single “Wannabe” featuring Junior Cally, his first studio album “Bipopular” was released in summer 2018. In 2019 “23 coltellate” was awarded gold status by FIMI and in 2020 the singles “Wannabe vol. 3” and “Per odiarti non ho tempo” were released. In 2022, Highsnob debuted at the Sanremo Festival in a duo with singersongwriter Hu with “Abbi cura di te”, a song dedicated to the end of a love story, in which pop, rap and electronic genres are mixed.

BALTIMORA NEW RISING TALENT

A keyboard sits behind him in the studio where we are having our interview. Edoardo Spinsante turns around and improvises the Baltimora riff so I can hear it: he is only 21, but that “cute little riff”, as he calls it, already has a long story behind it that began in his high school years and culminated on the stage of the talent show that boosted his popularity. And the rest is history. From the first CDs his uncle gave him as gifts when he was a child, to the nights spent writing to overcome unease and insomnia, up to that roar after his second live performance at X-Factor (“When I realised that I should stop beating myself up and thinking that I wasn’t good enough”). Nowadays, Edoardo is an overflowing river. He tells me about his debut EP, "Marecittà", and is already talking about the next one – how wonderful the adrenaline is at the peak of one’s creative phase.

Mr.Rain, pseudonym of Mattia Balardi, is a rapper and beatmaker from Brescia born in 1991. His debut in the music biz dates back to 2001 with the release of his first mixtape, "Time 2 Eat". In 2013, he almost qualified for the seventh season of the X-Factor together with rapper Osso, but was unsuccessful. With his platinum blond hair and an Instagram profile with over 300k followers, Mr Rain embarked on his first tour in 2014, and released his debut album Memories the following year, led by the single “Tutto quello che ho” . The album was a great success, with the track “Carillon” going double Platinum on FIMI in 2018. The song has 42 million views on YouTube. With “Supereroe”, he earned another Gold record. He also participated in the 72th edition of the Sanremo Festival, singing with Highsnob and Hu on the cover night. On 18 March 18 2022, he released his new single “Fragile”. His numbers alone speak of his great success: 12 Platinum records, 6 Gold, and sold-out concerts.

FASHION MEETS MUSIC. BEHIND THE IMAGE, A FRENZY OF EMOTIONS.

i

text by antonio mancinelli

n fashion and the industry that produces, distributes and communicates it, there is a great deal of debate about transparency, traceability, awareness of sustainability issues and environmental impact. What if it was also the moment to apply such requirements not only to the material features of eco-friendly clothing, but also to the intangible – and no less important – facets of creativity, in the name of an ecology of ideas, or better yet, the protection of utopias? Let me explain: in the last two or three years, not surprisingly affected by a great socio-cultural and health revolution, that is to say the pandemic, we have argued as never before that how we dress, when it comes to a self-representation, is not the result of a single designer struck by a sudden burst of inspiration, nor the result of a narcissistic selection by those who choose how to be seen by the world. We have finally valued the professional figure of a globular corpus that is the team consisting of different people whose brains and souls work together to decide on the definition of a given image or how a garment can be interpreted, worn, experienced. At last we have removed the veil shielding the stylist – whether editorial, committed exclusively to the image of celebrities, or allied with the fashion designer – as someone in charge of a group of people who refine, enhance and celebrate a spe-

cific clothing language of which the brand’s creative director is the flagbearer and bishop, though surrounded by a series of professional figures who have supported the process in the shadows until now. They have been in the shadows for so long - in the 1980s, 1990s and even in the early 2000s - at fashion shows as well as at major events, that the name of he or she who had given that particular idea or added that aesthetic touch within the realm of avant-garde clothing, joining worlds apart and drawing inspiration from art or street life (the term streetstyle didn’t exist yet) was barely expressed in whispers by fashion operators. Yet their names couldn’t and mustn’t have been said aloud due to a nebulous and suffocating mutual silence. This was also true for newspapers, where the term stylist officially appeared in print in 1985 in reference to the meticulous work of aesthetic-emotional puzzles, namely models dressed by a true artist who died too soon from AIDS, Ray Petri, for a remarkable magazine as The Face. I found evidence of this atypical situation when I decided to study this phenomenon and classify it systematically in my book L’arte dello styling for Vallardi, which I wrote with Susanna Ausoni, the best-known and oldest living Italian celebrity stylist. That’s how it went: apart from a few American handbooks and biographies of great stylist-muses of the past, there were no scientific

or reliable cultural sources. The research turned out to be much more complicated and challenging than expected since we lacked essential records, which we could only find by speaking with those directly involved, as well as by reading papers, students’ essays and dissertations. We tried to fill the gap that hadn’t been bridged for a very long time, because we were (once) prisoners of a nineteenth-century misconception that regarded the fashion designer as a lonely hero or heroine who got up every morning to prophesy how we would dress: although quite romantic in its own way, it is yet unfaithful to the truth. Today, as we call for greater transparency in the clothing production process, we should also demand it while questioning who participated in making a trend as a symbol and symptom of Zeitgeist, and what’s more, a transitional object (“clothes are machines used for communication”, argued the great epistemologist Eleonora Fiorani) supporting the desire to express one’s identity. Or better yet, to literally step into the shoes of the character we want to be on that day in that particular situation. Petra Flannery, who

curates the image of several celebrities including Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana and Renee Zellweger, in fact stresses how she wants her clients to impose their own personality. “I love it when someone wears something and says: “That is it. That is exactly what I want to wear.” She adds, “And you can get that on the red carpet”. The stylist duo Zadrian Smith and Sarah Edmiston claims that if a client starts dancing while wearing a certain look, they know they’ve made it. Smith explained: “I end every session by asking: “Are you comfortable, confident and happy? And if the answer is ‘no’, then we don’t have the look. If the answer to all of that is ‘yes’, then we’ve got it. Our priority, and thus the most important thing for us, is the comfort of our customers. As long as they are comfortable, confident and happy, you’ve done a good job.”

INTERVIEW

ART DIRECTION & MORE: THE REVOLUTIONARY TALENT OF LACCIO text by massimiliano benetazzo

T

The young, eclectic and versatile Emanuele Cristofoli (a.k.a. Laccio) represents an unconventional and revolutionary talent in the dance world and beyond. His career has gone down many paths: first dancer, then choreographer and artistic director. Thanks to his experience, Laccio is currently able to curate, coordinate and organise an event equally as well whether at the theatre, in music or on television, defining it down to the smallest details. His artistic direction is characterised by an innovative, ever-changing touch; his style is evident in the Modulo Project, the most active and original urban dance company on the national scene, and in the Modulo Academy, the first vocational academy focused on dancers specialising in the field of urban dance.

106

Yours is a unique path: you studied Interior Design at IED, then Fashion, with fashion collections sold in renowned boutiques and department stores, and various projects ranging from TV programs such as the X-Factor to cinema (Sorrentino’s Loro, Muccino), theatre, shows for brands of the calibre of Calzedonia, Alberta Ferretti, Benetton. Do you think that such a mix of versatility and eclecticism is crucial for making a name for oneself in today’s showbiz? Do you try to pass it on to your students and the young people you deal with? Today, the entertainment world has become more and more steeped in contaminations. We talk about “performance”, because various languages and means of communication are often combined. Dance, music and visual art, but also graphics and styling are vital ingredients, each of them needing the other to complete a story. My education in Interior Design and Fashion allow me to speak the language of the professionals I work with today in order to understand what’s feasible and what isn’t. You have to know your resources and how to best use them. Young people should be aware that the nowadays showbiz is built upon the blending of various branches (costume, lighting, stage design, music and choreography), and knowledge is fundamental so that the combination of those elements forms something harmonic. What is talent for you? It is difficult to describe it, today you have to be able to produce your own narrative, and know how to do that. A “genius” is someone who has ideas, things to say, and knows

how to do so using the means that society offers. There is no space for unruliness; on the contrary, planning and organisational skills are fundamental. Could you tell us a little bit more about your work at Modulo Academy (an academy that develops and launches the careers of specialised urban dancers)? What are the indispensable traits of an emerging dancer who wants to make a name for him or herself in that field? The Academy is a place where students work on themselves, and on how to find their own language passing through those of their teachers. It is located in Milan, which allows us to bring in various professionals working in the field, artists that narrate their own experiences. I try to involve them in our projects, giving them a chance to complete their education by having extraordinary experiences, not least the X-Factor finale at the Assago Forum. Who among the new names and emerging talents do you think has what it takes to become prominent figures in today’s showbiz? Surely Blanco has brought in a rush of energy that has “ruffled” the music biz. Broadly speaking, I think there are many artists in the underground scene with a lot of talent and will to narrate

themselves. But just like in every other field, you need to have the right occasion to showcase your abilities, the occasion that lets you show and convey to many other people what instead often stays locked up in a tiny room, in a drawer, or in an mp3 inside our laptop. With the X-Factor, we give people the possibilities to “shout” their own songs to a select public. The last two editions in particular have given the alumni the chance to showcase their own songs, and we worked a lot on their personalities. I have to say that it’s an entirely new show! What are your future projects? Recently I’ve been working with Laura Pausini, an artist that I truly cherish for her sensitivity, and her ability to be inspired by everything surrounding her. Not only that, Eurovision is coming, which is perhaps the most widely broadcast and talked about event of my career! Other than curating Laura’s performances, I will choreograph the entire Eurovision show: a challenging but surely unforgettable task. Let me point out the dates: May 10, 12, 14, when the two semifinals and the final will take place. It’s going to be amazing!

DREAMING OF BEING A SINGER-SONGWRITER:

FULMINACCI He was born Filippo Uttinacci in 1997, but is now known by all as Fulminacci. He debuted with his first album in 2019 and earned the Targa Tenco for Opera Prima, as well as the MEI Prize. He first became popular with songs such as "Tommaso" and "Borghese in Borghese", and then in 2021 the general public discovered his music thanks to his participation at the Sanremo Festival with "Santa Marinella" in the Champions category. Soon after he released his second album, "Tante care cose", which confirmed that we were dealing with one of the most promising and talented singersongwriters of the new generation. “I’ve always dreamt of being a

singer-songwriter”, he says during our interview. “For me it’s one of the real things that comes closest to being a superhero”. Yet the beginning of his story was rather random, and with a hint of shyness that makes him smile today: “I didn’t even realise that I would be able to do this job. Truth is, I wrote my first album without knowing I would later release it, without any sort of pressure, marketing logic, or artistic comparison. It was only after writing a few songs that I realised there could be something there, thinking: "I’ll play them for my girlfriend and my parents, so they can tell me what they think. And it worked out well, because they liked them."

7 is a number with numerous, particularly important meanings for Luca Marzano, a.k.a. Aka 7even, a 21-year-old from Campania among the rising stars of the Italian urbanpop scene. Indeed, the number refers to a painful episode in his past - the week he spent in a coma due to encephalitis when he was seven which he managed to turn into an element of strength and hope. Not so coincidentally, his autobiography that came out last year is titled "7 vite". In short, he’s a multi-faceted artist who has managed to convey his desire for redemption into music: admitted to the final stage of Amici in 2020, it was precisely during the talent show that he recorded his first hit, "Mi manchi". After the end of the TV show, Aka 7even published his self-titled album which included the song "Loca", a triple platinum-certified smash hit that also has a Spanish version. Then 2021 was an annus mirabilis for the singer-songwriter: he won the “Best Italian Act” Award at the MTV EMAs, and was selected for the 2022 edition of the Sanremo Festival, where he participated with the song "Perfetta così". His main influences include Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber and The Weeknd, but his signature style is actually quite personal (he defines his music as “versatile, with strong American influences on a topline and production level”), the result of his “wandering among different genres and styles”.

FROM MOVIES TO MUSIC, A NEW DEBUT FOR

sergio RUGGERI Sergio Ruggeri is a handsome Roman and all-around artist that we have been able to appreciate as an actor in several TV series and movies. But now we are here to learn about the new side of Sergio, the more introspective side as a singer. He has always been passionate about music, and we are lucky enough to be able to enjoy this passion song after song: the first was “Testate”, then “Farmacie” and finally “Patatrac”, which are all part of an EP that will complete his album to be presented in the summer. His attention and cinematographic care can especially be seen in the videos that accompany all three songs, where he tells us everything he feels and felt, digging deep into toxic relationships, narrating them and framing them in his own way.

INTERVIEW

BEHIND THE TALENT FACTOR: THE WORLDWIDE SUCCESS OF LUCA TOMMASSINI

i

text by massimiliano benetazzo

have always believed in dreams, and I’ve always believed that to achieve them you have to constantly nurture them, almost obsessing over them”: this is the mantra of dancer, choreographer, actor, videomaker and artistic director Luca Tommassini, an allaround artist. With his over-the-top and captivating personality, he successfully reached the forefront of showbiz thanks to his creativity and immense talent.

,,

His debut was when he was still very young, next to Lorella Cuccarini in “Festival” hosted by Pippo Baudo in 1987. Afterwards he took part in many shows, again dancing for Cuccarini and for Heather Parisi. In 1993 he decided to move to the US, where his career had a breakthrough. Madonna chose him as a dancer for her world tour “The Girlie Show”, and he was also in the video “Human Nature” and the musical “Evita”. After that, all the US stars wanted him in their shows: he’s danced for Diana Ross,

142

Prince, Whitney Houston, Kylie Minogue and Janet Jackson. He also managed to achieve another big dream of his: dancing for a person that had always been his idol since he had been young – Michael Jackson, who called him to dance in the video for Blood on the Dance Floor in 1997. As a choreographer, he collaborated with Geri Halliwell in her famous video It’s Raining Men and for Mi Chico Latino, and also directed the video for Ride It. At the start of the new millennium, he returned to Italy and worked with Paola e Chiara, Giorgia (for whom he curated a complete restyling of her image), began working again with his friend Lorella Cuccarini, as well as Ambra Angiolini, Elisa, Marco Mengoni and Anna Tatangelo. He was the choreographer of the Italian version of the X-Factor for 10 years, and then the artistic director of Amici on primetime TV. The end of 2020 was the beginning of his collaboration with TIM for a huge institutional ad - the longest in history - which aired on 31 December with Mina’s unmistakable voice, thus making one of Luca’s longtime dreams come true: collaborating with the biggest Italian star of all time. In May 2021, Luca curated the artistic direction of San Marino’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest, Sehnit with the track Adrenaline, for which he also directed the music video featuring Flo-Rida, one of the most popular American rappers. In June, Luca signed the collection We Are Dreamers in collaboration with Dream Project Spa, with a special project in favour of the non-profit Pangea to support the dreams of mothers and their children with the creation of a recreational and educational space.

Over your long career you have worked with heavy hitters of international showbiz (including Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Diana Ross) and also on the Italian scene, from Raffaella Carrà to Claudio Baglioni. Among them all, is there one particular experience that you consider especially meaningful, that you are most fond of, because it represented a turning point? It’s hard to say which experience was the most meaningful, I’ve had many turning points: starting to work in the USA, becoming Madonna’s principal dancer, and also when Michael Jackson called me. If we’re talking about dance, each of those events has boosted my success, and over time my work has evolved. I’ve directed a Coca Cola ad, I’ve worked behind the scenes in television, as a judge in Italian and international TV shows. Many turning points in different contexts of my life. We were talking about the many stars that you’ve had the chance to collaborate with – looking at the current scene, who do you think has the potential to reach the cream of the crop

today, in Italy and abroad? In the music field, Måneskin have certainly opened up the Italian scene to the international market, making it more appealing. Also Mahmood, Madame and Blanco. I think that here in Italy we have a tendency to always be very critical towards emerging local artists, and seeing people that become successful from the get-go makes us less “pricks” in our judgement of them. Yet in the cinematographic field we have always been known and appreciated, and now more than ever, also thanks to the new generation of actors. I really like Luca Marinelli, who has been quite successful, while among the youngest, I enjoyed Filippo Scotti in Sorrentino’s movie. In 2015 your (partly autobiographical) book Fattore T came out with Mondadori, in which you started by answering the question “What is talent?”. Let’s go back to that, what is talent for you? Talent is a multifaceted value that can be interpreted from a lot of angles. There is raw talent, which is innate and relates to art

143

INTERVIEW

(it’s a gift of nature), but also an “entrepreneurial” talent that can compensate the artistic one. So being famous doesn’t mean having talent, often today all it takes to be successful is sell yourself well and build a character on other bases, social media in particular contributes and helps this process. Talent is art, otherwise you’re just a famous person. Which qualities should a dancer, and in general, a new talent in the music field have to stand out and make a name for themselves, professionally speaking? When I was in the USA there were many Italian dancers, today Los Angeles is full of them. That means that the level of technique has become globalised, and also that Italians have something extra. Just to say a few names, consider the excellence of Jacopo Tisci, who became the principal dancer of the Bol’shoy Theatre in Moscow. But if we’re talking about dancers outside a commercial level, it’s important to know many different styles, and have many years of study behind you. Of course, technique isn’t everything – personally, I’ve always chosen people that feel free while they dance, that know how to play, that know how to be silly without being

144

afraid of seeming ridiculous. They have to be a sort of actor playing a role, I’m not interested in the perfect dancer. You have to be quick-witted and get into character, otherwise you turn out to be of little interest to the public, but also to yourself. What are your next projects? At the moment, my most recent projects are the show with Enrico Papi where I’m the artistic director, and then I have also have the series Le fate ignoranti (The ignorant angels) going on right now, where I was responsible for the choreography. I just finished shooting the movie Diabolik 2 with the Manetti Bros, and I’ve been working on lots of music videos, and many other projects which are still top secret. It’s been a very intense few months!

SONGS MUST HAVE A TOUCH OF RESTLESSNESS: THE SECRET ACCORDING TO D.WHALE

i

text by davide simonetta

’ve been writing songs my whole life, ever since I was a child. It has always been the only way to understand myself and to exorcise the pain. I was born as a songwriter and only later became a producer. I’ve always produced the songs I write, so this transition was quite natural. My approach always begins with the song, as I hardly ever work on things I don’t write myself. That’s how it goes: we meet in the studio, have a coffee, talk about ourselves and just start writing. But only when I think a song is good do I move to the second step, which is the arrangement. I still have a sense of ancient respect for music. I never make fun of it, and I never do something just because it’s work. Music has literally saved my life, and every time I walk into the studio it’s like entering a temple. I’ve got my work team there and it’s been the same for ages. Here is Paolo Antonacci, with whom I’ve written many radio hits in recent years, and Stefano Clessi, my lifelong friend. We started together in an independent reality, inventing ourselves every

146

day. He was the one who introduced me to songwriting, I never thought that an artist would sing songs written by someone else until ten years ago. Now I find myself working with many different artists from different genres and music worlds. All my work definitely shares a veil of melancholy and emotion that I’ve always carried deep within. I’ve never believed in packaged music, just to be clear, that’s made of “plastic”. To vibrate my deepest strings, songs must have some sort of restlessness. In the same way, every production preserves my taste and training from the golden age of hip hop in Berlin to 80s electronic music. I’m truly in love with pop and everything that makes you hum a song from the very first time you hear it. The Italian music scene changes from month to month and I find it very inspiring right now: there are no clear distinctions anymore, all the rules have been broken. This keeps me awake

and inspires me so much. Take for example Mahmood and Blanco: only two years ago, these two artists would have been defined as “urban” and yet they won Sanremo with an exquisitely Italian pop song, a beautiful melody in the best Italian traditions. This is the triumph of pop. The metrics change a little, of course, but urban is now mixed up with pop, there are no rules anymore. Our country celebrates melody, and a lovely melody always wins over everything else. It wins over repeated attempts to be cool at the expense of the song, and it also wins over useless attempts to make a production forcibly lavish, which only weakens the songwriting. In the end, only the songs win. This is so simple that is only understood by a few.

a story of women’s empowerment, the new wave of italian cinema:

maria chiara GIANNETTA & matilde GIOLI Maria Chiara Giannetta and Matilde Gioli are two actresses at the peak of their career, standing out as two absolute stars of their shows in the 2021/2022 season. Maria Chiara Giannetta exceled in the role of Blanca, in the RAI 1 series of the same name that topped audience viewership numbers, closely followed by her co-hosting the Sanremo Festival with Amadeus on Friday evening, where her elegance and charm made her shine. She is currently busy shooting "Don Matteo", where she’s again working with her ideal acting partner, Luca Argentero.

Matilde Gioli was the protagonist of the first two seasons of “Doc - Nelle tue mani”, another RAI 1 TV drama which reached record-breaking numbers in viewership (more than 30% of the audience share on average per episode). She is currently at the cinema with the new comedy by Fausto Brizzi “Bla Bla Baby”. But we already knew all about her beauty, as well as her always-ready wit. Two strong women discuss themselves, Northern and Southern Italy in its various nuances, always with the right dose of irony. They are both united by a great passion for nature and horseback riding, a sport that they first got acquainted with precisely because of their acting. Two women who are the true embodiment of female empowerment.

giuseppe FUTIA

A NEW INTERNATIONAL FACE OF ITALIAN CINEMA:

With bright green eyes and the physique du rôle of a model, the 25-year-old actor Giuseppe Futia turned to acting after a solid career in the fashion world (he has appeared in ads for Pepe Jeans, Kappa, Pull&Bear) and moved to Los Angeles in 2017 to attend the prestigious Stella Adler Academy. The right opportunity (“It all seemed like a miracle” he recalls) as Tommaso in "Ancora più bello" (2021) came about while he was in the U.S. We will see him soon in "Backstage - Dietro le quinte", a film about nine (aspiring) actors who seek to act in a play. To achieve their goal they will have to prove their own artistic skills. He describes it as “an intense experience” which required “two months rehearsing, dancing and singing”.

CHARISMA MEETS TALENT: THE RISE OF

GIACOMO FERRARA

Born in 1990 and originally from Abruzzo, Giacomo Ferrara is one of the most talented and charismatic actors of his generation. He became known – and loved – as the gangster Alberto “Spadino” Anacleti, one of major characters of the film "Suburra", and above all for the first three seasons of the successful TV show of the same name. Speaking of Spadino, he says, “I will always carry him with me, he has become part of Italian pop culture and this is confirmed in what people write me, from how they show their affection they feel for him”. Before his popularity thanks to the Netflix series (“A wonderful parenthesis on my journey, which began in 2015 and ended last year”), he had already proved his skills with the role of Angelo in "Il permesso - 48 ore fuori", which earned him the Guglielmo Biraghi Award at the Nastri D’Argento 2017 edition. He also took part in the fairytale film "Guarda in alto" (where Teco

experiences surreal adventures on the rooftops of Rome), the fantasy film Non mi uccidere, the Sky miniseries "Alfredino Una storia italiana" and most recently "Ghiaccio", the debut film by the singer and songwriter Fabrizio Moro (in tandem with Alessio De Leonardis) where he depicts a young man from the suburbs seeking redemption from a troubled life, to say the least, in boxing. In his own words, it is “A love story in which I play Giorgio, an extremely introverted boy always messing up. This is where the coach Massimo (Vinicio Marchioni, an extraordinary partner in the adventure) comes in and tries to bring him back to a better path through sport”. To prepare for the part, he had to undergo intense training because “Our challenge was to make the boxing scenes believable, so I endured very demanding sessions. I trained nine times a week, I gained muscle and followed a strict diet”. So far we have mentioned different stories and

genres, yet his visceral and sometimes “extreme” acting stands out in the wellknown Spadino (a borderline criminal torn by conflicting feelings, a daily life of violence and oppression, repressed sexuality and the obsession to get revenge on a family that only considers him a hothead) to the peculiar Ago, a drug addict with pink hair and a friend to the protagonist in Non mi uccidere. Indeed, Giacomo “Enjoys working on a role with his whole self, completely identifying with it”, but he points out that, “regardless of how charismatic or ‘strange’ a character might be, it is essential to find stories that have a reason to be told, that go straight to the heart, just like Ghiaccio”.

THE (IN)VISIBLE THREAD OF

FRANCESCO GHEGHI Born in Rome on 19 August 2002, Francesco Gheghi is a promising young actor in the Italian movie scene, who in only a few years has already worked with some of the most famous Italian actors, and always in leading roles. He’s just finished shooting the upcoming film “Piove”, and the film “Il filo invisibile” was just released on Netflix, where he stars as Leone, the teenage son of two fathers. In May, the TV drama “A muso duro” will air on Rai, telling the story of the first Paralympics held in Rome in 1960, in which Francesco plays the role of a paraplegic athlete. In real life he loves sport: he enjoys swimming, playing football, skiing, biking and rockclimbing.

The words of an old Jovanotti song come to mind while we talk: “Sono un ragazzo fortunato, perché mi hanno regalato un sogno…” (I’m a lucky guy, because they’ve given me a dream). And this is precisely Francesco Gheghi, a young professional with a great deal of drive to grow, to learn from older, more experienced colleagues, a young adult who’s grateful for his dream having come true: “being in all the scenes”. “I started acting in elementary school” he tells me during our interview. “My first role was of Saint Francis: not because I earned it, but because my name was Francesco. That’s when I discovered that I liked acting. I graduated high school last year, which was an accomplishment.

I had missed so many days of school because I was shooting on the set of two movies, “Il filo invisibile” and “Piove”. But it was very important to my mom that I earn my diploma. I got lucky though, since due to Covid the exam was held without a written part. I had a rather winding path through school, as I first began at a linguistic high school, thinking that speaking many languages would be useful for my acting career. But I didn’t like it so I switched to a sport science high school, because sport is another passion of mine. I didn’t like that one either. So finally I enrolled in a human sciences high school and found I was interested in the subjects. I also had good grades”.

FROM STARS TO NEW CHALLENGES, THE PATH OF

claudia GUSMANO Her career began when she was cast for her first theatre play at the age of 19 after many years of studies, unaware of the success she would later reach thanks to popular TV dramas such as “L’allieva” on Rai 1. Today, Claudia Gusmano is fresh from the success of “Guida astrologica per cuori infranti”, where she plays out the ordeal of being thirty-something and questioning oneself again on a personal and professional level, under the protection of the stars. In 2022, she will be the lead actor in the movie "Shotgun" (directed by Marta Savina) in the role of Lia, a girl that endures a horrible rape and uses her strength and courage to start a rebellion that will initiate the fight for women’s rights. She considers talent as “That light that makes you stand out from everybody else, and you can choose to either let it shine, filling your eyes with beautiful things, or let it be overcome by the fear of never being good enough”.

anna FERZETTI DISCOVERING THE SAVVY ANGEL

Anna Ferzetti stands out among Italian actresses for her delicacy and elegance. As the daughter of the great actor Gabriele Ferzetti, she began breathing in the scent of art right away, a gift that she has cultivated with commitment and devotion. Step by step on her tippy toes, Anna has created a significant space for herself in the world of entertainment. With a filmography including few, carefully selected projects, in recent years the actress has set herself apart as a personality worthy of interest within the national movie and TV scene. Most notably, she has won over critics and audiences thanks to her bright roles in productions for the younger public and in popular comedies, including the Netflix series "Curon", where we rediscovered her in 2020. Recently she has been part of the cast of the successful RAI 2 series “Volevo fare la Rockstar”, but also of “Le Fate ignoranti” ( "The Ignorant Angels") based on the iconic Ozpetek movie.

HIBITI MANINTOWN LOVES ARTS Evers since its inception, the magazine has supported both emerging and well-established artists. This issue is dedicated to David LaChapelle, who has returned to Milan to showcase a new and visionary phase of his productions.

he large-scale solo exhibition “David LaChapelle. I Believe in Miracles”, at the MUDEC in Milan, produced by 24 ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE and promoted by the Comune di Milano-Cultura, is the result of a journey of artistic research lasting a lifetime which presents a previously unseen and, to some extent, surprising David LaChapelle. Over 90 works are displayed – including large formats, site-specific installations and new productions – directly from the artist’s studio, to present his vision of a new world and a potential new humanity. Starting with his early works, the eyes of the public are opened for the first time at the Museum of Cultures to a previously unseen series of works that are part of the new and visionary phase of his output – the last, dated 2022– the result of the powerful legacy of his lengthy artistic and human experience. With an unprecedented project curated by Reiner Opoku and Denis Curti in partnership with LaChapelle studio, the Museum of Cultures hosts an exhibition itinerary that critically examines the human soul, investigating its various facets of joy, pain, solitude and passion, insecurities and ideals. Humankind

and its relationship with itself, human beings in the surrounding environment and in society, humankind in nature. A very personal vision that the Mudec has chosen to present by staging this retrospective of the artist, furthering anthropological reflection on the present. The exhibition includes over 90 works which unfold in a flowing and captivating narrative, through the artist’s very personal vision of a ”gestural” kind of photography; that is, a snapshot of the present while ”alert” for the future ahead. Starting with works that portray the vulnerability of the planet and the fragility of humankind, together with a repertoire that looks at pop culture and the stars of cinema, music and art, the exhibition winds its way through images that reveal the artist’s vision for a new world. A world that seeks an uncontaminated and luxurious nature where everyone can experience spirituality, love and beauty and where men and women can finally live liberated from alienation and in unity with the natural context. The exhibition itinerary is a personal journey steeped in memories and

208

sentiment that purposely mixes a nonchronological order with the experiences of a professional and private life which, in the end, prove to be on the same level. New photos have been exhibited for the first time following the challenging experience of the two-year pandemic. They have been conceived in the natural surroundings of Hawaiian forests, where LaChapelle has made his home. The photos interpret certain passages from the Bible and seem to signify a ”change of pace”. His style gradually becomes more intimate and pensive. The settings relinquish, at least partially, the surreal dimension to descend into a more realistic atmosphere. Less saturated compared to his previous works, the colours invite us to go back in time to reflect on our values and on the need to see also ourselves in a miraculous new world.
