At Herbster Angus Farms, our management strategy keeps us focused on our No. 1 product: bulls built right, both inside and out. We are passionate about the future of the cattle industry, which makes us aware of the trials cattlemen and cattlewomen face every day. To minimize the hardships, it is important to be proactive in herd bull selections, think progressively about mating decisions, and aggressively search out superior genetics that will allow Herbster Angus Farms bulls to positively affect the industry. Our breeding system supplies superior phenotype, unparalleled maternal traits, and industry-leading performance.

With the addition of T/D Doc Ryan 049, our $525,000 Nebraska top seller, we have increased the marbling and carcass traits in our herd to help cattlemen who sell their calves on the grid and are concerned with a better retail product. He also provides an outcross for our long term customers. We used Doc Ryan heavily in our herd, and his use has paid extreme dividends. Currently, Doc Ryan has an average weaning ratio of 104 on 144 calves in 20 herds. His progeny come moderate at birth and grow fast to weaning. They have excellent skeletal construction, are deep sided, and massive in their rear quarter. We have excellent direct sons in this offering that have superior weaning, yearling, and carcass data. We are excited to introduce Doc Ryan to you! The bulls in this sale are some of the first ones to be offered at public auction. We can’t wait to get these bulls working in herds across the United States!

DELIVERY AND YOU-HAUL DISCOUNT:

This year, we will be offering delivery on bulls and females to all states adjoining Nebraska at no extra charge. A total discount of $100 per buyer will be given to any buyer who hauls his or her bull home directly from the sale on April 6, 2023. (Ex: one bull purchased = $100 discount; two bulls purchased = $100 discount; one bull and one cow purchased = $100 discount.). We can also house your bull in Falls City, Nebraska, for up to two weeks after the sale. Bulls left at Herbster Angus Farms after two weeks will be subject to a $5-per-day surcharge. (Females bought are not included in this discount).

Boomer was bred by our great customer, Wayne Wilde and trained by Wayne’s family and his manager, Don Abarr. Great horses and cattle come from their operation in Shelvin, Minnesota.

All cattle selling in this sale are inspected by a licensed veterinarian and will have current health certificates for immediate shipment. The bulls have been tested free of Trich and Johne’s. The heifers have been tested free of Johne’s.

HERD HEALTH:

Cows and Herd Bulls: Annual vaccination for IBR, PI3, BVD 1 and 2, Vibrio and the five most common strains of Lepto and Blackleg. Our cattle are poured in the spring and fall. We herd test for Johne’s annually. Calves: (birth) Endovacc Beef, (Protocol given at turnout, preconditioning and weaning), 7 Way, Endovacc Beef, Vista Once, Dectomax or Ivermectin. Conklin Fastrack® Probiotic has been given at all stages of life.

RETAINED INTEREST:

Unless otherwise stated in the sale book, Herbster Angus Farms will retain 1/3 revenue sharing interest on every bull sold, and the buyer receives full salvage value and full possession. When Herbster Angus Farms retains at least 1/2 interest in a bull, he must be collected at North American Breeders in Berryville, Virginia, to ensure quality, 40-millioncount semen is produced.

BULL GUARANTEE:

We guarantee the bulls selling in the 2023 Herbster Angus Farms Sale to be fertile and sell with a positive semen check on the day of the sale. Bulls are guaranteed fertile through the breeding season directly following the purchase of the bull, approximately April 6, 2023, to August 1, 2023. Our bulls are not guaranteed through negligence, poor feeding, or accidents, but only for fertility and issues relating to fertility. We suggest that buyers purchase insurance on their bulls to protect their investment against catastrophes out of the control of Herbster Angus Farms.

The year was 1982, and a stunning heifer calf was born February 4th that struck us as being quite special in the way of a quality gemstone. So, we named her Tiffany BR. She became the foundation matron of the B/R Ruby of Tiffanys, one of the most impactful cow families of the Angus breed. It was about this time that I realized, using the “hottest” bull of the breed was not a breeding program, and having a goal of producing the “next great one” with no plan was a long-shot at best.

I was trained to believe in the value of great females in a pedigree, and it occurred to me that our goal should be to see “how small we could make the scrap pile” in each year’s calf crop. So, with that in mind, we mated Tiffany BR to AAR New Trend. The result was B/R Ruby of Tiffany, a female that, to this day, would represent the phenotype that I would want every cow in my herd to have. It was about this time that we embarked on identifying carcass merit in our program. The value of that effort would not be fully appreciated by the industry for another 10-15 years. We were committed to seeking carcass genetics without compromising fertility, structural correctness, and functional traits.

This is a good time to mention that when we worked at “reducing the scrap pile,” bulls like “New Frontier” showed up at the top of their calf crops just like cream separating from the milk. They became more of the norm for us. B/R Ruby of Tiffany 3156 still posts a heifer pregnancy EPD of +15.2 (top 10%) and a marbling EPD of +1.00 (top 10%).

The next female in line is a daughter of B/R 65R Genesis, B/R Ruby of Tiffany 8496, the great-grandmother of Doc Ryan. She posts a heifer pregnancy EPD of +13.0 (top 30%) and a marbling EPD of +1.31 (top 2%).

The female that is the seventh generation of this story is T/D Ruby of Tiffany 824, who, as a two-year-old female, produced the eighth generation Doc Ryan, the highest-selling and one of the most remarkable individuals in the storied history of the Rishel program. She records a heifer pregnancy EPD of +16.3 (top 4%) and a marbling EPD of +1.35 (top 2%).

The third cow in Doc Ryan’s lineage was B/R Ruby of Tiffany 4117, born in 1994. She still posts a heifer pregnancy EPD of +13.3 (top 25%) and a marbling EPD of +.75 (top 25%). Longevity matters, and this female was mated at eight years of age to B/R New Frontier 095, the top-selling bull in the 2001 Rishel Angus sale, producing B/R Ruby of Tiffany 3156.

Herbster Doctor May 205 has been a standout in our spring calf crop since birth. Like his phenomenal sire, Doc Ryan, the Lot 1 bull is superior in his feet and leg structure, impressive in his skeletal design, and is loaded with red meat. “205’s” extra softness and boldness of rib and efficient look is where he surpasses his sire in phenotype. The calves have grown extremely well. The young bull selling as Lot 32 is a long, growthy calf with the promise of Abigale maternal excellence from his dam’s side. He ratioed 114 at weaning, adding to his mother’s excellent weaning ratio record of 2WW@112.

The Herbster Marshall 8207 progeny have tremendous length of side. Length gives you the weight! Long-sided, rugged, and powerful, he will add pounds that producers want. He weighed a very light 70 pounds at birth, but growth is in there! Look at his WW, YW, CW, and RE genomic data!

We crossed the predictability of the Southern Charm matriarch, Hickory Hill Erica TA32 with the birth-to-yearling spread matron, RB Lady Standard 305-890 and produced the strapping, stout herd bull that sells as Lot 34. Having an individual weaning ratio of 112, he has weaning weight excellence, and it shows! His ideal, Harvestor-sired mother has 4WW@102.

The mother of Lot 35, Herbster Lady Prideva 7221, has 2WW@103. She, like so many excellent cows in our herd, is a direct daughter of our birth-to-yearling weight leader, RB Lady Standard 305-890. With a smaller birth weight of 78 pounds and a BW EPD of +.1, Herbster Marshal 237 should be safe for heifers. Check out the structure on Lot 35. We scored him as ideal on claw and angle.

We decided to sample Frey’s Opportunity as an outcross in our herd because he is the sire of RB Lady Opportunity 3306-7173, our trait-leading donor. “7173” is a granddaughter of RB Lady Standard 305-890, so we used Opportunity on anything stemming from her. That cross is magic!

Lot 36’s mother, one of the fanciest RB Lady Standard 305-890 daughters in our herd, Herbster Lady Prideva 5160 has been a great producer for Herbster Angus Farms. She has 5WW@103, 2YW@104, and 2IMF@100. Wide in his rib dimension and correct in his skeleton, Lot 36 had a weaning ratio of 109. His $B and $C EPDs put him in the 4th percentile of Non-parent sires. Lot 37

The only Deer Valley Growth Fund son in the sale this year, Lot 37 tied for high WW ratio in our spring bull calf crop. Adjusting to 891 pounds to ratio 126, he is a scale crusher! He has a huge WW, YW, and $F EPD. In addition, his genomic data suggests his progeny will be in the 1% category for WW and YW growth. We have been noticing Lot 37 since birth. He is one that we always have to see when visiting the bull pen because this young herd sire is just so impressive! Masculine, bigtopped, and thick, this Growth Fund is a sale feature!

His first-calf heifer dam is on the road to becoming a Pathfinder® and comes from the same family as the cow that produced Lot 28. Schrock Doc 32 has been special from day one and has done nothing but grow. When it comes to Doc Ryan calves, the performance and growth is unparalleled to anything we have ever used at Schrock’s Angus Farms. Coupling Doc Ryan with the prolific Jilt family that screams longevity, this bull is a home run. He the heaviest weaning weight calf ever to be raised on our farm at 1020 pounds, and he has quickly become our favorite. He is sure to add pounds wherever he goes. Phenotypically he is astonishing, with the ideal foot and leg structure to insure longevity. The females are sure to be keepers, just like his mother, who has been added to our donor pen. With his extreme weaning growth, it’s no surprise Lot 39 ranks in the elite percentages of Nonparent sires for WW, YW, CW, RE, $F and $W. The Charles W. Herbster Foundation was launched in 2015 by Nebraska businessman and fifth-generation farmer and rancher, Charles W. Herbster.

The Foundation’s goal is to support the academic development of and offer financial support for qualifying students pursuing a two-or four-year degree. These scholarship recipients are selected based on exceptional academic ability and achievement, leadership, community involvement, service to others, career vision and goals, and financial need.

Mr. Herbster has a passion for giving, and proudly supports the youth of the United States of America. With his great understanding of the role rural America plays in the U.S. economy and the importance of small businesses as the backbone of the nation, he is excited to help our youth succeed. Mr. Herbster has mentored many young people in business and continues to invest in America every day.

Over twenty students, who submitted their applications seeking financial assistance to attend an institution of higher education, received the Charles W.
