THE ART OF

Being Still

BEING STILL THE MEANING OF What is being still? Be still in the English dictionary can mean not moving, and being quiet. From a biblical perspective, these two words take on much greater meaning. The Hebrew definition is to stop striving, to let go, surrender. How often do we ask God for everything, but we don’t stop to listen or to be still? The act of being still and getting quiet becomes more of a challenge in our busy world. The world asks us to be busy. God asks us to be still so that we can receive love, peace and guidance. Being Still takes practice and patience. For some of you it may seem like it is not in your nature to do so. This is a feeling that many people have felt time and time again. It is my heart’s desire that after reading this book that you all will see the value of learning the art of being still. ************************************

BEING STILL THE ACT OF

When I learned to be still!

A great length of time before our wedding we planned out every detail. Mrs. Roach and I picked colors, music, and the dĂŠcor, attire for us and the wedding party and more. We built detailed folders for the wedding party and the coordinators. When I say this day was going to be an amazing experience for everyone I mean it. I did all the stationary and Mrs. created all the boutonnieres and bouquets for the party. We even put together the party favors for everyone. The best decision we made was to start a year early with everything, including the attire for everyone. As expected we had a few changes and updates here and there but it all was going as planned. As for the groomsmen, we wanted them to have a nice suit to fit our theme but we also desired for them to keep the suits after the wedding. The business we choose 9

for the suits was the right one to us. A year prior I personally used them for the attire I wore to propose in. So we were excited to give them the business and all our guys were equally excited to purchase them. To see everything coming together was joy to our hearts. The guys all paid deposits and sent in measurements and looked forward to being a part our day. As the wedding day drew closer we checked back on the guys suits and the owner was surprisingly out of town when we called or stopped by. We were concerned at first but just when we were about to readjust our plans the owner would call and assure us everything was on schedule to arrive the week of the weeding which seemed about right. Our faith was strong and we were moving forward with joy. Our wedding day was fast approaching and we were ready. The week of we went to check on the suits’ arrival and they were not in yet. With a smile on my face I turned and look at wife to be and said let’s go. At this time so many 10

thoughts entered my head and I really wanted to step outside of my character with the owner but this is when I knew that would not help. I had an amazing group of guys including one of my best men. I knew I had to “BE STILL” at this point and totally depend on God to work everything out for my guys. The morning of the wedding our guys still did not have their suits. At this point I was being still and had to know He was God as the scripture said. My best man and my groomsmen all went to the store and were going to work everything out. I stayed with them the night before the wedding and the morning of the wedding I went to my grandma’s house. A house filled with 62 years of marriage and love. The entire time all I could hear and think about was “BE STILL and KNOW I AM GOD”. So much peace was upon me now. It was so calming and only allowed me to think on seeing my bride and seeing the entire party in their attire as planned. Being still allowed me to have the joy of the Lord and it gave me so much strength. When I arrived at the church I was informed from my guys that 11

they were getting their suits and all was worked out. The day turned out to be better than expected and Mrs. Roach and I had our dream wedding.

BEING STILL THE ART OF

What I learned from being still!

The art of being still has been the peace in my life. From that moment from the wedding to this day I have learned to master the art of being still. This simply means that I have learned and still learning to surrender all to the Lord. In other words I have embodied being still and trusting that God is in total control. Being still has given me peace, patients and the power to believe. Since 2012 many moments have risen up in our life. Some of the moments may have been worse if I had not learned to practice being still. I call it an art because of the beauty of the benefits from it. One of the greatest benefits is hearing my wife tell me that she gains peace from seeing me be still. My greatest desire is to be an example to my family of what God can do when you surrender your life to him. 13

THE ART OF

Being Still

God asks us to be still so that we can receive love, peace and guidance. Being still gives us time to think and then react according to our faith in God. ************************************ SUGGESTED WAYS TO BE STILL SET ASIDE SOME STILL TIME Like that 30 minutes of exercise; find yourself 30 minutes for stillness exercising. If you need to remove yourself from where you are in order to get some still time then do so. Make sure that you are free from your everyday distractions. SIT STILL Just that. Sit. Still. Sit on your hands if you have to. Sit and be - if only for 10 minutes. BE PRESENT WITH YOUR THOUGHTS Sit with your anxiety and discomfort, get used to doing it. Address your thoughts; watch them come and go through your mind, let 14

Being Still

them drift in and out as they do, don’t get too hooked on one thought process; let it float through your mind. WATCH THE CLOUDS Sit back and watch the clouds drifting past. Work out their form, movement, direction, their shape. Imagine your thoughts and anxieties drifting off with them. GET OK WITH THE ART OF BEING STILL Practice makes perfect. Practice your still time. Do it on a regular basis. The more you practice the better off you’ll be with being still.

BEING STILL THE HEART OF

What others believe about being still!

SOBRINA TAYLOR Shamar Prophet

“I believe that being still before the Lord is anything but passive. On the contrary, it requires one to "be." In other words, one must exert action, an intentional effort to posture oneself into a position of surrender to GOD. Ah, yes...it requires man to display self-control "Be still," yet walk in obedience to God-"and wait." There are many lessons to be learned on various levels here, but the particular thing that rings true is he/she must make an effort to "deny his/her emotions" to rule during this period of waiting, and trust that God, our Father, will bring about the necessary circumstances to display His omnipotent 16

power in our behalf, in His appointed time & season.”

MONICA NICOLE CABLE Warcriers Ministries

“I see being still in the Lord as a place of trusting God to Be God! The Lord wants us to be cool, be calm, and be confident that He's got us and everything pertaining to us. He cares for us and when we are still-- we are letting God care for us and be God; in control that is....to speak, lead and guide us along our way. When we are still, we let go and let God. To “be still" calls for us to cause our spirit soul and body (every part of us) to be quieted in order to focus. It’s not always easy with all the things we have going on at times but we have to learn how to do it--still learning ;) how to wait still in His presence. It is NECESSARY! So to sum it up and say it again, Be Still, or shall I say Relax, Rest, and Trust GOD and know that He got YOU (the place of peace indeed).”

BEING STILL OUR PURPOSE OF

What being still has done for us!

It is something captivating to see two art forms come together – music and dance, architecture and animation, or acting and video. They are so uniquely different, yet are kindred in a way that makes their pairing seem obvious. This pairing, when done right with balance and a mutual understanding and edification of the other, has the ability to impact, inspire, and initiate change in onlookers. Learning the art of being still has allowed my wife and I to not only hear God’s voice for ourselves, but to also see that He is at work in each of us. Yielding to His voice has given us a distinct presence where we walk in a joint purpose where we serve with humbleness and live a fulfilling life of joy, peace, and contentment. It is our hope that we can encourage others to do the same.
