It was indeed a grace for Mandira to have had the opportunity to study ‘Art as Healing’ process with Carola Buchhart in Accra, Ghana. Unlike traditional setting of a typical art class in school and college, art classes with Carola took place in the garden of her home in Accra, Ghana. Infused with gentle music, over warm tea and coffee one would settle into work in a contemplative atmosphere surrounded by both professionals, artists, and students of all ages and nationality. Carola Buchhart trained as an Art Therapist in Germany. However practicing as an Artist/ Art Teacher in Accra, Ghana. The moment Mandira walked into one of Carola’s exhibit at the National Theater in Accra her heart knew that this is what she too had been trying to express as a young artist in training, an art that heals. Mandira and Carola met a few times after that in each other’s studio. When Carola decided to offer art classes, Mandira quickly signed up. A typical art class with Carola started with endless pencil scribbles to loosen oneself. She would often say, ‘ To let the beauty to flow, let all the ugliness come out.’ As well as not to sit with the thought of producing a beautiful piece of art but to just enjoy the process. After scribbling for a while, Carola would ask the class to look at one’s scribbles and see if there is something there that one see’s and would like to work on bringing it out. Similar was the process of painting. In this manner, Carola asked one to go deeper into things and people, to see behind the surface, to understand reasons and structures, to feel the inner self. “To open one’s eyes through art - the inner and outer ones. To make one sensitive to the beauty of all kind. Whatever happens on the paper is principally a reflection of what one has done. Whom to blame, when things go wrong? Whom to blame for our limitations and fears? The next level then is to let go of the inner self. Deep relaxation and trust in life. Purification of the soul. Then the power can flow. Rivers of love.”

Carola’s art process taught the beauty of putting ones inner self in front of oneself, to create distance and freedom – to look at it, to understand and respect. Understanding the depth and structures of oneself – as a foundation for love and as a basis for change. The “Red Hill’ channeled into creation through such a process.

Carola taught an art process as a way of meditation to go deeper into things, and prayer to enter into dialogue with the source of creation. Art was a means to humble oneself, turning the self into a channel of creation. Willing to be a tool. Being ready to serve. The painting ‘Caves of God & a Spring of Water’ came into being through this process.

Carola’s teachings were to paint a tree when one profoundly understands its nature. Contour drawing helped build such discipline, to trust and have faith in the eye leading the hand without looking at the down at the paper as can be seen in the contour drawing of the African ‘Porcelain Rose’.

Spring Unsung I 2000

Oil paint and chalk & Pencil on Paper I 30 x 20 in.

Unfinished painting is giving birth to ‘spring’ after the melting of winter snow. Carola’s instructions at first may appear very loose but in its looseness lay’s deep structure. The painting typically starts with pencil scribbles to loosen up before introducing color. At times using the color one is pulled to, at other times using a color one usually will not use, to stay with each process and tool for a while. Step away from time to time to see what is emerging. Define that with pencil, or oil chalk. At times focusing in on one area and working, and at other times looking away and working. If the magic gets lost, let go and start a new.
