Sierra Club’s mission: To explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth; To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources; To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; And to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

2

America’s largest and best-known grassroots environmental organization, Sierra Club, is also its most effective. The Club’s 1.3 million members and supporters have helped to protect more than 250 million acres of wildlands, more than 12,000 miles of wild and scenic rivers, and many national treasures. The Club’s core activities are public education, grassroots activism, and lobbying for environmental issues. In addition, the Club has a well-developed and influential presence in book and magazine publishing, as well as in adventure travel, with over 20,000 outings per year. Sierra Club also has an extensive inner city outings program serving 15,000 disadvantaged youths and adults annually. Sierra Club notecards and holiday cards present scenes of wildlife, landscapes, and details from the natural world. Those featuring animals include notes on the subject’s natural history. All cards are printed with soy-based inks on recycled paper, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of these cards supports Sierra Club’s efforts to preserve and protect the planet.

All of Pomegranate’s Sierra Club products are printed on recycled paper.

SC0900

Anatomy of a Tree

Not only do trees create most of the oxygen that we breathe, they also absorb and help prevent toxins from entering Earth’s atmosphere, provide habitat for creatures, and serve as a vital link in various ecosystems. With images and text, this poster explains photosynthesis, the difference between a conifer and a broadleaf tree, the sections of a tree, the importance of roots, how annual rings serve as historical records, and the biology of fruits and seeds. Cross-sectional drawings of water flow within a tree and a tree trunk, along with a summary and essential tree facts, round out the presentation of these amazing gifts from nature.

SC0901

Rainforests

Rainforests, the oldest and one of the most important of Earth’s ecosystems, are major regulators of our atmosphere. About 50 percent of all plant and animal species live in tropical rainforests; 25 percent of all medicines derive from rainforest plants. This poster describes each layer of the rainforest ecosystem, from the forest floor to the emergents (the tallest trees)—a rainforest tree illustrated alongside a scaled highrise emphasizes the depth of each layer. World maps show the range of the rainforests; a deforestation alert drives home the message of what the future may hold for these diminishing ecosystems.

SC0903

Endangered and Threatened Animals of North America

A dozen large, colorful photographs by Art Wolfe constitute a dramatic visual plea for saving the animals. The portraits reveal the majesty of twelve of our favorite friends: the red wolf, American manatee, bald eagle, bighorn sheep, sea otter, California condor, gray wolf, Florida panther, grizzly bear, Steller’s sea lion, Florida key deer, and northern spotted owl. Detailed descriptive text about the animals’ characteristics and their likely fate accompanies the images. Whether endangered (at high risk of extinction) or threatened (could become endangered or go extinct), the animals pictured here represent a potential woeful loss for planet Earth.

SC0902

Wetlands

Coastal (estuarine) and inland wetlands exist on every continent but Antarctica. Sweeping artwork in this poster indicates the myriad flora and fauna—including nearly half of our threatened or endangered species—that thrive in swamps, wet meadows, floodplains, and other areas. Statistics underscore the devastation of the wetlands: states that have depleted 80 percent or more of their wetlands (Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, California) have experienced the nation’s worst flooding in recent years. Compelling text explains more about the wetlands and their importance and holds out a welcome note of hope in the discussion of the Everglades.

Animal and Bird Tracks

ISBN 978-0-7649-2167-4 We humans—the naming animal—enjoy ourselves more when we know what we’re observing in nature. Animal and Bird Tracks satisfies our hardwired urge to identify: a picture of a bird’s or an animal’s footprint appears on one side of each card; the other side names the creature and presents its taxonomic data, physical characteristics, and footprint size, with notes on particularly interesting aspects of its natural history. How do you tell a badger’s track from a porcupine’s, or a woodpecker’s from a flicker’s? Animal and Bird Tracks reveals the contrasts at a glance, enhancing knowledge, trailcraft, and the pleasure of being outdoors.

What’s the Difference Between a Dolphin and a Porpoise?

Subtle Distinctions in Nature ISBN 978-0-7649-2165-0 Being able to distinguish a manatee from a dugong could tell you which continent you are on (if you’re in doubt). Knowing the difference between a porcupine and a hedgehog lowers your risk of grievous bodily puncture. Deducing that the wiggly thing underfoot is a king snake and not a coral snake could save the snake’s life. This deck offers illumination on the characteristics that set one animal, plant, geological feature, or meteorological event apart from its seemingly similar neighbor. It’s a compact take-along that helps confirm the keen-eyed identifications of the peripatetic naturalist-at-large—and an entertaining reference tool for those who stay at home.

SC0106

Where in the World Are You?

A Situational Quiz Deck ISBN 978-0-7649-2177-3 Each card in this deck invites you to determine a location on the basis of a clue—for example, “Suddenly, all is calm after days of rafting on thick, red water through furious rapids in Arizona’s high desert. Where in the World Are You?” The card’s opposite side answers the question and provides notes and observations on such topics as the location’s formation, ecology, and features. The cards cover a variety of subjects, and all yield solid information and dry humor. Seasoned travelers and backcountry tyros alike will be highly entertained on the trip to the trailhead.

SC0107

This deck goes anywhere in a pocket; its contents, in Q&A format, deal with most of the nasties that the outback can inflict. Each card asks a question on the front—How do you retrieve a lost companion? Treat frostbite, snakebite, heatstroke? What should you do when encountering a mountain lion?—with a knowledgeable answer on the back. The work of a lifelong outdoorsman and river guide, these authoritative cards are excellent company, at home or on a wilderness trip.

The front of each card has a detailed color illustration of a tree; the back notes the species’ common and scientific names, description, habitat, distribution, and points of interest.

How Many?

A Quiz Deck of Numbers in Nature ISBN 978-0-7649-2996-0 This deck explores forty-eight fascinating aspects of life on Earth in an entertaining Q&A format—from the numbers of tree species in the Amazon rainforest, gallons of crude oil required to make a gallon of gasoline, legs possessed by a millipede, and inches of annual rainfall in the Sahara Desert to the numbers of mammalian species that lay eggs, times a hummingbird flaps its wings during each second of flight, and years in the life of a bristlecone pine. The intriguing question presented on the front of each card is answered on the back with a satisfying essay that rounds out the topic in concise, lively, and informative prose.

SC0114

Water

An Environmental Quiz Deck ISBN 978-0-7649-3008-9 A spot of geology and a drop of geography, a bit of agriculture, a splash of politics, and a good measure of ecology, chemistry, and, of course, hydrology drift to the surface of this absorbing Q&A deck. Water trains a much-needed spotlight on our ongoing global responsibility toward—and woeful neglect of—our most important natural resource, but the news is far from all bad, as these cards make clear. The front of each card asks a question regarding the world’s water; the back answers the question and provides background information to complete the picture.

SC0115

Can you name the atmosphere’s layers? How much air do we breathe in a day? With a question on the front and the answer on the back, other cards address global warming, the Kyoto Protocol, CFCs and the ozone layer, and cow digestion.

What in the World Am I?

An Endangered Species Quiz Deck ISBN 978-0-7649-4150-4 My tongue is as big as an elephant, but my food of choice is smaller than a paper clip—what in the world am I? As to my armored green neighbor, who spends her days eating nothing but algae and grasses, she ends up too often in an expensive soup—can you guess what she is? Even creatures as big as blue whales and giant sea turtles can disappear from Earth if human beings shirk their duty to protect the planet. Mollusks, mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and one spider are spotlighted on these forty-eight cards: their identities are hinted at on the front of the card, and their natural history and survival tale are told on the back.

The forty-eight cards in this deck explore the mysteries of how nonhuman beings—from single-celled organisms to dolphins, anteaters, and apes— express themselves. The front of each card asks an intriguing question about creature communication; the back provides a witty, well-researched answer. We’re all aware that Earth is a spinning orb, but how many of us can name a human endeavor that has affected the rate of rotation? The forty-eight cards in this deck pose such educational and entertaining questions on their fronts and provide well-researched answers on their backs. Equally enjoyable as a solo study or a quiz game with family and friends, the Planet Earth Quiz Deck covers everything from gravel to gravity regarding the revolving orb we all call home.

Waste has become big business, and, like all commodities, it can be parsed mighty fine. Curbside novices may know a green-bin item from irredeemable dross, but the cognoscenti distinguish between garbage, trash, refuse, junk, and rubbish. This deck of forty-eight cards dissects those distinctions, probes the history of waste from the Stone Age to the space age, tracks the movement of garbage across state lines, and exposes the long-suppressed truth about diapers and landfill. Whether you quiz yourself or organize a quiz game for family and friends, Talking Trash covers the universe of castoffs.

Why We Need Bees, Beetles, Urchins, and Worms

A Quiz Deck on Beneficial Invertebrates ISBN 978-0-7649-5076-6 Most of us think about the smallest denizens of the planet—the invertebrates— only when our houses are invaded by ants, or a bee buzzes by, or we discover a crab in a tide pool. But these organisms play integral roles in the biosphere we call home. Do you know which crustacean protects our salt marshes? Which beetle it is that cattle ranchers rely on? Noted zoologist and author Frank Indiviglio knows a lot about the world’s smallest inhabitants and brings his expertise to bear in the forty-eight cards of this jam-packed quiz deck.

Endangered Places: A Quiz Deck

By Matthew S. Tharp ISBN 978-0-7649-5387-3 Our planet is forever changing. An age of ice is succeeded by drought—and then another ice age. Sporadic mass extinctions seem to threaten life itself. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the forces of change seem to have conspired: deserts are spreading, cities and farms are gobbling up open spaces, seas are rising. To cope with an increasing number of endangered places, local and international efforts have included evacuating low-lying islands, diverting water flows, and encouraging ecotourism. This deck of forty-eight quiz cards surveys the globe, from the Great Barrier Reef to the Amish farmlands of Pennsylvania, testing your knowledge and teaching you all about Earth’s threatened regions.

SC0130

How Long on Earth? A Quiz Deck

Life Spans of Animals, Humans, Insects, Plants, and Microorganisms ISBN 978-0-7649-5456-6 A stroke of bad karma might make you a cockroach, but the news wouldn’t be all bad: you’d only have to scuttle for sixteen months. Humans are among the longest-lived animals; cockroaches don’t live nearly so long as tarantulas or scorpions. If your karma went the other way, you might inhabit the body of a whale: the bowhead can live more than two hundred years, a generous span if you enjoy plankton. This deck of forty-eight quiz cards conveys far more than the life spans of the great and the small, shedding light on why some creatures live longer than others, how stem cells might be used to extend human life, and whether butterflies live longer in cages or meadows.
