Furniture design has always reflected the style of the period. Currently, eclecticism is one of the most important characteristics of design. Today, an intelligent combination of pieces, different in style, put together with good taste, creates original rooms that are utterly charming. The greater the contrast, the more risqué the bet and the more impressive the result. Classic furniture is the protagonist of this new trend combining shapes, textures and colors from different eras. Today you can find furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries in vintage or antique stores, or new editions from contemporary manufacturers. Whether original or re-make, the options are immense and can be found in this book offered as a source of inspiration to achieve customized, original and surprising interiors.

Who are the best graphic designers today? Who are the emerging new superstars of the moment? Where do they get their ideas from? What are their best pieces of work? In what direction is contemporary graphic design heading? What new sources are used for inspiration? You will find the answers to these questions in Star Graphic Designers: a compilation of more than 80 of the best current international graphic designers with the aim of offering a comprehensive showcase of their most prominent works and becoming a reference manual for graphic design in the 21st century. The result of this research is a careful presentation of 400 projects that show the path that graphic design will take in the next decade.

“I am an architect from the coast of Peru, a desert strip with unique characteristics due to the presence of Humboldt cold water current in the ocean that defines a context that is not too hot, not too cold and where it never rains.”

Although LandsKap Design was created just over 10 years ago in Bergen (Norway), there is no question that it is now one of the key exponents of landscape architecture and a unique reference for any urban landscape artist.

Javier Artadi is emerging as the leading Latin American contemporary landscape architect for his work and ongoing research on the relationship between architecture and desert landscape of the Peruvian coast.

Not only has it received prestigious international awards and taken part in forums and biennials but its founder has worked for over a decade in close collaboration with various Norwegian universities in the Social Science sector.

Winner of the Fourth Latin American Architecture Biennale of Architecture with Playa Las Arenas, he took fourth place in the Contest Place of Memory and two honorable mentions at the Fourteenth National Architecture Biennale 2010 with projects House in La Encantada and Edificio Residencial Costa, among others. This monograph is the result of his work as an architect, researcher and teacher and, therefore, an essential reference work for scholars and professionals.

Sælen’s constant quest, research and awareness form this firm’s huge contribution to the project, viewing landscape as an essential part of cultural heritage and hence the backbone of our cultural space. This monograph is therefore much more than a compendium of architectural projects: it is the materialization of a new concept of “rurban” space.

The fusion of Ibizan traditions with function, form, and taste is the hallmark of Blakstad’s projects, dedicated to conserving the cultural significance of the island in today’s architecture. Rolph Blakstad exhaustively studied Ibizan architecture when it was still a living millennial tradition, with peasant builders working with rules passed down by word of mouth from father to son. The architect’s study of these builders formed the basis of his research, design and building for more than 40 years. A few days after Blakstad’s death, and as a tribute to his work, in this monograph the reader will find the path of an unbroken tradition reaching back to distant origins, but adapted to the needs of today. A design based on historical Mediterranean architecture, combining style and building techniques to suit contemporary lifestyles.

With almost 5000 years of history, tattoos have been updated, renewed and adapted at a much faster rate than other similar artistic expressions. Present in cultures and times as diverse as Ancient Egypt, 10th century Japan, Borneo and Java in the 18th century and of course, modern Western culture, tattoos have been banned and encouraged, they have adopted ritual meanings or they have been considered as simple decorative elements, they have been associated with privileged castes in society or the world of crime… This book is a faithful testimony of this, as it combines dozens of pieces of work from the most outstanding international tattoo artists, those who have used the human body as a canvas for their work.

All fashion accessories have a historic beginning and an evolution. They all started life for practical reasons, to protect our feet from the cold, our face from the sun, our personal belongings, etc. Even jewelry, despite the fact that it is more decorative in nature, has in turn been used to distinguish various social groups or classes. Such facts are important to know and will be observed in the small details. Details we shall use to present a gallery of innovative photos and unveil a wide range of contemporary fashion accessories in various chapters: shoes, bags, jewelry, watches, sunglasses, hats, shawls and gloves, etc.

Galicia, northern Spain, has been historically characterized by the close relationship between the inhabited and the natural worlds, by the intense dialogue between man and nature which is the basis of the anthropic landscape.

Those that think that everything has already been invented in the accessory world are wrong. Today’s fashions have obviously drawn from centuries of costume history. However, new techniques and new materials, combined with the explosion of contemporary creativity, have generated a challenging whole world of accessories.

All this through strategies such as “invisibility”, letting the spotlight fall on the natural elements, the human intervention limited to a work of counterpoint against the natural environment.

The final chapter, devoted to the concept of style, will teach us how to play with accessories and combine them to create different styles inspired by a particular era, color or urban tribe, with a classic or futuristic look about them.

César Portela starts from that reality, its precarious and unstable condition, to build an architecture whose success lies in the harmony and agreement that is able to establish with that unique and recognizable place on which it operates and its ability to stay.

Like with architects Sverre Fehn and Norway or Luis Barragán and México, identification with the land itself (in this case Galicia) is an active factor in each of the architectural projects undertaken by César Portela.

MS Design adapts to the vertiginous pace clearly marked by times giving solutions to the new demands and social needs, determinant in urban development.

A series of guidelines for general information offers designs and sketches to help people understand how to obtain significant savings in energy and water consumption, and also to get into the basic tenets of bioclimatic design for a healthier home.

That’s why they carry out a responsible and respectful architecture with nature, looking for environmental adequateness and ethic under criteria of ecology saving and sustainability. Interior design also plays a relevant role as fundamental and complementary part of the purely architectural project. The architecture is born inwards becoming of vital importance the way of dressing the interior skin of the buildings. That’s the reason why in Luxury Architecture you will find from villas to urban design.

The design phase determines a large part of the savings in natural resources, energy and water that will be implemented during the construction and subsequent running of the home. Knowing what passive strategies are best suited to its orientation, latitude and climate; what active strategies (photovoltaics, geothermal energy, underfloor heating, etc) will provide greater energy efficiency; or how to achieve a green home with respect to surfaces, materials and furniture, are some of the criteria dealt with in this book. The book is accompanied by illustrations and color photographs in compliance with the criteria governing bioconstruction.

“It’s not common for a single course of action and thought to manage to make a mark on a city, and even less common is that the same person can exert some influence on it. However, this is the case of Punta del Este and the architect Martín Gómez.

Díaz & Díaz Arquitectos SLP works have been selected for prestigious awards such as Leading European Architects Forum (LEAF Awards), WorldArchitecture News (WAN Awards), College of Architects of Galicia (COAG Prizes), Awards of Architecture of Madrid, ENOR Awards, FAD Awards, among others.

Bilingual edition English - Spanish

Obsessed by integrating his work into the context of the landscape in which it is immersed, the work of Martín Gómez is more than just simple commissions. It is a complex process of overlapping the tasks of the architect, interior designer, landscape architect and graphic designer. His works are part of an originality that primarily use natural resources in direct contact with their environment. The most striking impact of his proposal is the ability to show over time a common thread in all projects, regardless of the type, scale, context and materiality.”

Among the most notable projects we can highlight the Rehabilitation and Expansion of the Gran Hotel-Spa of Guitiriz, Los Rosales Kindergarten, Nautical Sports Services Building of Portonovo, the Building of Control CCS of the Outer Harbour of Ferrol, College Malabo in Equatorial Guinea and the Headquarters of Cupa Pierres in Paris, but these are not the only ones. They also participate in courses and exhibitions in conjunction with institutions such as the Spanish universities and colleges of architecture, Architecture University College of Dublin, the San Francisco Institute of Architecture (California), and the PechaKucha Night conferences. From their daily practice on site, they propose a contemporary style of architecture designed to integrate values such as awareness of the environment, sustainability, economy, rationality and constructive rigor.

Jaime Sanahuja Asociados is one of the leading contemporary European architecture and interior design companies, which has always based their projects on criteria of quality, innovation and creativity, with a view to matching the level of the architecture of Valencia with the best of Spanish and international architecture. Hence, its main lines of work have an interdisciplinary aspect: private and public facilities, rehabilitation, physical planning and urban houses, as well as projects and synergies with international architectural studios and the creation of the Hat Gallery exhibition space. “Jaime Sanahuja is one of the teams that has continued to work for an expressive architecture and that can be identified with our country (...) with a modern and committed vocation”.

José Mª Rodríguez-Pastrana and Felipe Artengo-Rufino have raised contemporary Spanish architecture to the level of art as demonstrated by their participation in “Onsite New Architecture in Spain”, a show hosted by MoMA in 2008, in the Italian pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2010 and more recently in the project in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The reason for their internationalization can be found in their readiness to dignify spaces through their constant use of dialog between landscape, architecture and history, which at the end of the day is the leitmotif of the work undertaken at AMP Arquitectos. In the words of Fernando Menis, one of AMP’s founding members upon his return to the Canaries (Spain) after living in Paris and Barcelona, “due to a lack of contact with everything going on around, this purely rational isolation led to a type of architecture that was always pushing things to the limit, and taking risks. This is closely related to an attempt to understand the place at a time prior to our own. To try and delve into its initial moments. Understanding that place, with those conditioning factors, as a starting point for any project. [...] This filter (using the island) has meant that when we go somewhere else, our solutions are never far away.”
