Birdie’s Big-Girl Dress written and illustrated by Sujean Rim That night, Birdie dreamed of dresses— chic chiffon gowns . . . fluttery floral sundresses . . . lovely lace sheaths . . . Birdie is looking forward to a very BIG day—her birthday. But when she grabs her favorite party dress, she realizes that—oh no!—it’s too small. She tries on dress after dress after dress, but nothing is quite right. She soon realizes that all she needs to find the perfect outfit is a little imagination. With beautiful watercolors and clever paper and fabric collage, Sujean Rim crafts another delightful Birdie adventure. Like Birdie, SUJEAN RIM wears many hats. She’s an illustrator, shoe designer, and new mom, and has illustrated campaigns for Target, Jones NY, Tiffany & Co, and the popular website DailyCandy. Sujean lives with her family in New York. An extraordinary vision of the classic lullaby from Caldecott Medalist Jerry Pinkney $16.99 ($18.50 CAN) ISBN: 978-0-316-05696-0 10 1/2 x 10 1/2 • 40 pages Ages 0-3 • Birth-Preschool Full-color illustrations Carton Qty: 25 UK & Translation Rights: Sheldon Fogelman Agency, Inc.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star by Jerry Pinkney Jerry Pinkney, the most acclaimed children’s book illustrator of our time, now takes his legendary skill with watercolor to new heights in this lavish visual adventure. Inspired by one of our most popular children’s lullabies, Pinkney’s gentle world—where the loving arms of nature embrace us despite darkness or uncertainty—is perfect for easing little ones into dreamland. has been illustrating children’s books for more than forty years and has more than seventy-five books to his credit. He has the rare distinction of being the recipient of five Caldecott Honors, and in 2010 he won the Caldecott Medal for The Lion and the Mouse. He lives in Croton-on-Hudson, New York.

A New York Times bestselling series!

You Have to Stop This by Pseudonymous Bosch illustrated by Gilbert Ford In this fifth and final (I swear!) book in my saga of secrets, a class trip to the local natural history museum turns dangerous, or perhaps deadly—and I don’t mean in the bored-to-death way—when Cass accidentally breaks a finger off a priceless mummy. Forced to atone for this “crime” of vandalism, Cass and her friends Max-Ernest and Yo-Yoji go to work for the mummy exhibit’s curator, only to be blamed when the mummy disappears. To clear their names—and, they hope, to discover the Secret—the trio must solve the case of the missing mummy themselves. In the midst of it all, there’s still a Secret lurking. Will it finally be revealed? Why should I tell you that?! No matter what I do, no amount of warning seems to stick. You’re still out there, reading and talking about the Secret, and now my life—and chocolate supply—is in the greatest danger yet! So please, with a cherry on top, I’m begging you! You have to stop this.

Dear Reader, duaalsls I am aware that certain individu have become acquainted with the adventures — and even the personal stories — of the remarkable children who call themselves the Mysterious Benedict Society. Furthermore, it is my understanding that these individuals have developed a wish to see their own wits tested, much as the wits of the Society members were tested before the Society was formed. If you are reading these words, it is likely you are just such an individual. Therefore, I urge you to put on your thinking cap (or if you are already wearing your thinking cap, to adjust it so that it rests most comfortably upon your head), for with the aid — indeed, the considerable contributions — of the Society members themselves, as well as a few of my associates, I have compiled the manual you now hold in your hands: a compressed and highly portable collection of mental challenges. May you find them rewarding! Best regards,

Mr. Benedict P.S. If, perchance, this volume is not part of your personal collection, please complete the exercises in a separate notebook so that others who wish to attempt these challenges may do so.

EXCERPT We were looking down into a hall with rows upon rows of seats, leading down to a stage filled with riot police and soldiers and— Wait a minute. They weren’t moving. They were just mannequins. Even weirder: intermingled with the police were an assortment of what I’d technically define as thugs, monsters, and all-around bad guys. Dozens of teenagers wearing headphones and holding videogame controllers sat in each seat fighting against videogame-sized versions of the police officers and soldiers. Then, after a few minutes, a bright red icon flashed: CHANGE WEAPONS CHANGE WEAPONS CHANGE WEAPONS In almost perfect synchronization, the kids removed a weapon from the black bag at their feet and charged boldly down the aisles at the stage. In seconds, the good guys had been reduced to smoking, stinking puddles of melted plastic-and-wire. But as if that weren’t disturbing enough, I noticed something else: The monsters on stage were completely untouched. “Let’s get out of here,” I said, just as the screens flashed another message: GAME OVER GAME OVER GAME OVER The brainwashed players collapsed to the floor.

No More Death. No More Destruction.

IT ENDS NOW. I walk toward him, head held high, and for a moment time stops as The One and I take in one another, the disheveled, determined girl and the demonic dictator towering over her. I swallow hard, concentrating all of my focus on the fantasy, the one where I’m able to strip The One completely of his power. I have the Gift, right? I’m The Chosen One. The One’s eyes widen as he looks down at my arm. The heat is there, the fire, but it’s more than that. It’s control. I feel the raw electric power pulse from my fingertips. I want to back off—but I can’t look away. This is what I came here to do.

EXCERPT The first time I broke my arm, I was ready for it, and after that, it just seemed a good idea to be prepared. I hung a go-bag on my door in case of a fire or an earthquake and put a mini first-aid kit in my backpack, and I rehearsed possible disasters in my head, over and over, until I was sure I knew how to react. I knew it sounded a little bit crazy, and I stopped telling anyone about it when Hemi Koroheke called me creepy and, with smug emphasis, neurotic, which was our Year Eight Word of the Day. But I did it anyway. I had plans for what eulogy to give if both my parents were hit by a car, how to escape or attract help if I were kidnapped, and how to survive if I were lost in the bush. It wasn’t as if I thought all these things were likely to happen. But I knew they could, and if they did, I wanted to be prepared. In the end, it didn’t do me any good. Because I didn’t have a plan for what to do if my older brother put Dad’s shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger with his toes. My mistake.

Ethan Wate thought he was getting used to the strange, impossible events happening in Gatlin. But strange and impossible have taken on new meaning. Locusts, heat, and storms ravage Gatlin, while Ethan and Lena struggle to understand the impact of Lena’s Claiming. As the weeks progress, one question becomes clear: What—or who—will need to be sacrificed to save Gatlin? For Ethan, the chaos is a frightening but welcome distraction. He’s gradually losing pieces of himself—forgetting names, phone numbers, even memories. He doesn’t know why, and most days he’s too afraid to ask.

A striking new trilogy from an award-winning author!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor Karou leads two lives. One is in the tangled streets of Prague, as an orphan and art student; the other in a clandestine workshop, overflowing with jars of teeth and wishes, run by the ram-horned magician, Brimstone—the closest thing to family Karou has ever known. She doesn’t know where she came from, but she’s about to find out. When Karou meets stunning, haunted Akiva, she finds a love whose roots drink deep of a violent past, and an ancient war that is far from over. Master storyteller Laini Taylor imagines a wholly unique fantasy about a forbidden love, an epic battle, and hope for a world remade. is the author of the National Book Award finalist Lips Touch, as well as the novels Blackbringer and Silksinger. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, illustrator Jim Di Bartolo, and their daughter, Clementine.

EXCERPT She’d been drawing these creatures since she was a little girl, and her friends tended to talk about them as if they were real. “What was Brimstone up to this weekend?” asked Zuzana. “The usual,” said Karou. “Buying teeth from murderers. He got some Nile crocodile teeth yesterday from this awful Somali poacher, but the idiot tried to steal from him and got half strangled by his snake collar. He’s lucky to be alive.” “How do you make this stuff up, maniac?” Zuzana asked, all jealous wonderment. “Who says I do? I keep telling you, it’s all real.” “Uh huh. And your hair grows out of your head that color, too.” “What? It totally does,” said Karou, passing a long blue strand through her fingers. Karou shrugged. In fact, her hair did grow out of her head that color, pure as ultramarine straight from the paint tube, but that was a truth she told with a certain wry smile, as if she were being absurd. Over the years she’d found that that was all it took, that lazy smile, and she could tell the truth without risk of being believed. It was easier than keeping track of lies, and so it became part of who she was: Karou with her wry smile and crazy imagination. In fact, it was not her imagination that was crazy. It was her life—blue hair and Brimstone and all.

Explores the timely topic of bullying.

Everybody Sees the Ants by A.S. King When Lucky Linderman starts having dreams about meeting his long-lost POW/MIA grandfather, he knows better than to tell anyone. But the dreams just might be real, and Lucky can’t help but feel like he fits in better in the jungles of Vietnam than suburban Pennsylvania. All he has at home is a distant father, a weary mother, and a bully who makes him feel like his life just isn’t worth living. But how long can Lucky inhabit his dreams before reality pushes its way inside? Acclaimed for her entirely distinctive yet accessible voice, A. S. King brilliantly moves between the war stories of soldiers and those of daily teen life with humor, sensitivity, and a touch a magic realism. A.S. KING is the author of The Dust of 100 Dogs, a 2010 ALA Best Book for Young Adults and a 2010 Cybils Award finalist, and Please Ignore Vera Dietz, which was named a Michael L. Printz Honor Book. EXCERPT ALL I DID WAS ASK A STUPID QUESTION ON N... “If you were going to commit suicide, what method would you choose?” This was a common conversation topicc between Nader (shotgun in the mouth), h), Danny nny (jump in front of a speedspee ing truck) and me (inhaling car fumes), ),, and an we’d been jokingg ab aboutt it forr months. I never saw anything bad in it. That kind of stuff made Nader laugh. And Nader laughing at my jokes meant maybe I could get through high school with less shrapnel. I really don’t think it’s that morbid of a thing to ask. I’m pretty sure everybody has thought about it at one time or another. My plan for my Social Studies assignment was to make a few cool pie charts or bar graphs, you know—to show off my Microsoft Excel skills with labels like slit wrists, overdose and firearms. Anyway, just because a person talks about suicide does not make it a “cry for help.” Six days later, I was in the conference room with my parents, surrounded by the school district’s “experts” who watched my every move. In the end they recommended family therapy, suggested medications and further professional testing for disorders like depression, ADHD and Asperger Syndrome. And if one more person explained to me how “precious” my life was, I was going to puke. “Why didn’t anyone think my life was precious when I told them Nader McMillan was pushing me around? That was . . . what? Second grade? Fifth grade? Seventh grade? Every freaking year of my life?” There they were, asking me if I was okay when they’re letting people like Nader run around. Just because he seems okay doesn’t mean he’s not cornering kids in the locker room and doing things to them you don’t want to think about. Because he did. I saw him do it and I saw him laughing.

EXCERPT Dear Ed, In a sec you’ll hear a thunk. At your front door, the one nobody uses. It’ll rattle the hinges a bit when it lands, because it’s so weighty and important, a little jangle along with the thunk, and Joan will look up from whatever she’s cooking. She will look down in her saucepan, worried that if she goes to see what it is it’ll boil over. I can see her frown in the reflection of the bubbly sauce or whatnot. But she’ll go, she’ll go and see. You won’t, Ed. You wouldn’t. You’re upstairs probably, sweaty and alone. You should be taking a shower, but you’re heartbroken on the bed, I hope, so it’s your sister, Joan, who will open the door even though the thunk’s for you. You won’t even know or hear what’s being dumped at your door. You won’t even know why it even happened. It’s a beautiful day, sunny and whatnot. The sort of day when you think everything will be all right, etc. Not the right day for this, not for us, who went out when it rains, from October 5 until November 12. But it’s December now, and the sky is bright, and it’s clear to me. I’m telling you why we broke up, Ed. I’m writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened. And the truth is that I goddamn loved you so much.

The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney Themis Academy is a quiet boarding school with an exceptional student body that the administration trusts to always behave the honorable way—the Themis way. So when Alex Patrick is date-raped during her junior year, she feels like she only has two options: Stay silent and hope someone helps, or enlist the aid of the Mockingbirds—a secret society of students dedicated to righting the wrongs of the student body. In this account of a teenage girl’s search for her voice and the courage to use it, debut author Daisy Whitney reminds readers that standing up for someone, especially yourself, is worth the fight. The Rivals by Daisy Whitney Last year, when Alex Patrick was assaulted by another student, her elite boarding school wouldn’t do anything about it. Only the Mockingbirds, an underground group of students dedicated to justice, would. This year, Alex is head of The Mockingbirds, dealing with a case unlike any they’ve seen before. A far-reaching prescription drug ring has sprung up and students are using the drugs to cheat. But how do you try a case with no obvious victim? Especially when the facts don’t add up and each new clue drives a wedge between Alex and the people she loves the most. And Alex is going to have to wander over the moral line of vigilante justice before she can come back and fight for what is right. DAISY WHITNEY has always believed in the power of speaking up. EXCERPT The vast space below looks hollow and dark, empty and depressing. But then I start pulling records, releasing light and color into all the empty spaces. My music circles the room, spreading smiles onto hundreds of faces. The crowd sways to the beat and hollers in approval as I draw them to the floor, making them feel weightless and alive and sucking them farther and farther from their real world problems. Every person in Fever falls under my control, giving me sole power over every movement they make, every step, every shift, every turn, every head bob beneath the bright, flashing strobes. The bass line throbs and pulses like a heartbeat, exploding from deep within, then flowing out in a mad, endless rush. I have the power to pump people up, to mellow them out, to make them fall in love. I am everything in this moment and everything can become anything I want it to be . . . That’s how I see it all going down whenever I picture myself spinning at Fever. But I’ve only been there in dreams. In reality, the closest I’ve ever gotten to that club is the sidewalk across the street. Six nights a week, after I’m done busing tables and washing dishes at Spazio’s restaurant, I walk the two blocks to Fever and sit on the sidewalk across the street from the club to eat a crust-free tuna fish sandwich and drink a can of cold Mug Root Beer while eagerly taking in every bit of action, every detail that might give me a hint of what’s going on inside. I know the infamous DJ Lord was spinning because I saw him exit a taxi and enter the club, a girl wrapped around each arm. There is no one more important in a club than the DJ. I’ve never been inside Fever. I’m not old enough to get in. But sitting across the street from the hottest club around keeps my dream alive.

EXCERPT Zoe raises an eyebrow as she continues. “Adriana said that Otto wants to cast a corps girl in the lead, and that’s why he’s been watching class.” Now this is news. Daisy puts down her eyebrow pencil, and Bea closes the magazine and sits up a little straighter. I take another sip of coffee and wait for Zoe to continue. Now that she’s mentioned it, I realize that Otto has been around a lot more lately. Usually we only see him two or three times a week, but he’s been slipping into the studio during our center work nearly every day recently. He lingers at the back of the room along the mirrored wall, his expression intimidating as he taps his fingers on his knee and watches. “I saw him giving you the up-down in class yesterday, Hannah,” Bea says. “The day before, too. Maybe you’ve got a shot at it.” “You think?” I ask, feeling a little shiver of excitement. “I doubt it,” Zoe snorts under her breath. She leans toward the mirror, retouching the lipgloss on her full, pouty lips.

The #1 New York Times bestselling Gossip Girl series has sold over 6 million copies!

Gossip Girl, Psycho Killer by Cecily von Ziegesar Gossip Girl, Psycho Killer is a re-imagined and expanded slasher edition of the first groundbreaking Gossip Girl novel. Just as in the original story, Serena has returned from boarding school, but this time she’s decided that the only way to make amends with her BFF Blair Waldorf is to eliminate Nate Archibald. If that means killing him, well, c’est la vie. But Blair isn’t about to let Serena kill whoever she wants—not when there’s Cyrus Rose and Chuck Bass and Titi Coates and everyone else who’s ever irritated Blair to get rid of first. . . . CECILY VON ZIEGESAR grew up in Manhattan and attended a small, private girls’ school on the Upper East Side. She began writing poems and short stories and fantasizing about murdering people as soon as she could hold a pen. Gossip Girl was her first novel. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, daughter and son, and two nearly hairless cats named Pony Boy and Woody. She hasn’t actually killed anyone—at least, not yet.

EXCERPT Ever wondered what the lives of the chosen ones are really like? Well, I’m going to tell you, because I’m one of them. I’m not talking about models or actors, musical prodigies, or mathematical geniuses. I’m talking about the people who are born to it—those of us who have everything anyone could possibly wish for and who take it all completely for granted. The ones who literally get away with murder. Welcome to New York City’s Upper East Side, where my friends and I live, and go to school, and play, and kill, and sleep—sometimes with each other. We all live in huge apartments with our own bedrooms and bathrooms and phone lines. We have unlimited access to money, booze, antique weaponry, apocalyptic poisons, the best carpet cleaners, bespoke luggage, town cars, and whatever else we need, and our parents are rarely home, so we have tons of privacy. We’re smart, we’ve inherited classic good looks, we wear fantastic clothes, and we know how to party. Our shit still stinks, but you can’t smell it because the penthouse is sprayed hourly by the maid with a refreshing scent made exclusively for us by French perfumers. It’s a luxe life, but someone’s got to live it . . . until they die. Our apartments are all within walking distance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue and the single-sex private schools, like Constance Billard, which most of us go to. Even with a hangover, Fifth Avenue always looks so beautiful in the morning with the sunlight glimmering on the heads of the sexy St. Jude’s School boys. But something is rotten on Museum Mile. . . . sightings: B shooting daggers at her mother in a taxi in front of Takashimaya. N firing up a joint on the steps of the Met, his lacrosse stick at his feet. C spending a killing on new school shoes at Barneys. And a familiar, tall, eerily beautiful blond girl emerging from a New Haven–line train in Grand Central Station. Approximate age: seventeen. Could it be? S is back?!

EXCERPT “So you’re fitting in,” Luke states simply. “I think so,” I reply. “I mean, I can tell a difference,” Luke says, looking away. “What do you mean?” I ask. “Well, I don’t know,” he starts, looking down and then up again, anywhere but at me. “Like, for example, your new clothes. It’s like a whole new you. You dress more like those girls now.” “I just want to look nice!” I defend myself. “No, not that that’s a bad thing, Ricki Jo!” he says, glancing down at me and then back over his shoulder. “You look great. Really pretty, actually. Just, you didn’t care before and you were still,” he stammers on, “you know . . . pretty.” I smile, and can’t really describe the way hearing that makes me feel except to say that it feels like every part of my body has lungs and just got a deep breath of fresh air. My folks call me pretty sometimes, but it sounds totally different coming from a boy.

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan’s life. She’s stuck at JFK and late to her father’s second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon-to-be stepmother that Hadley’s never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport’s cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he’s British, and he’s in seat 18B. Hadley’s in 18A. Set over a 24-hour period, twists of fate and quirks of timing play out in this thoughtful novel about family connections, second chances, and first loves. JENNIFER E. SMITH grew up outside of Chicago and graduated from Colgate University, earning her master’s in creative writing from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. EXCERPT Who ever heard of a plane leaving on time anyhow? She’s four minutes late, which doesn’t seem like all that much when you think about it; every single day, in every single airport, there are people who make their flights at the very last moment. But not Hadley Sullivan, who lets her backpack slip from her hand as she stands at the window, watching the plane break away from the accordion-like ramp. Across the ocean, her father is making one last toast. Behind her, the boy with a ticket on the next flight to London is eating a powdered doughnut, oblivious to the dusting of white on his blue shirt. Hadley closes her eyes, just for a moment, and when she opens them again, the plane is gone. Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?

Binding Information Little, Brown and Company publishes all new hardcover children’s titles in a single edition. Most titles for the younger age are bound in Little, Brown Bindings. Little, Brown Bindings are Smyth or side sewn through sturdy cloth strips. Books with library bindings (side sewn with Cambric reinforcement) are described as such on the catalog page. Little, Brown does not distinguish special terms for library bindings. Regular trade bindings for books for older age levels are Smyth or side sewn or adhesive bound without special reinforcement in a variety of cover materials, including full cloth and durable paper or nonwoven book coverings. For a complete list of Accelerated Reader titles, please contact your HBG sales representative. Product-Safety Information Safety is an important priority for Hachette Book Group. For this reason, when we publish non-traditional children’s books—that is, books with Novelty elements—we require the vendors of the Novelty components to assure us that the components meet prevailing safety guidelines. Beyond that, we test each Novelty book at an independent testing facility ourselves to assure strict adherence to safety standards. Additionally, each product is labeled with the suggested age range along with any warnings applicable to the suggested age range. Our goal is to produce entertaining, educational and informative books that readers can enjoy without risk of injury. We take our responsibility seriously, and appreciate your support of Hachette Book Group.
