Cy Twombly Edited by Jonas Storsve

y Twombly (1928-2011) was one of the seminal American artists of the second half of the 20th century, with a complex oeuvre extending over six decades. His work brilliantly fused the legacy of American Abstract Expressionism with the intellectual rigor of classical European and Mediterranean culture.

His artistic development is traced through more than 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs, which span his entire career, including three major history painting cycles: Nine Discourses on Commodus (1963), Fifty Days at Iliam (1978), and Coronation of Sesostris (2000). From his early works at the beginning of the 1950s, which were characterized by the interweaving of text with his signature scrawled lines, to his final, vibrantly colored paintings, this overview underscores Twombly’s career as a series of cycles in which he invented painting anew.

✚ Accompanies a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou, Paris (11/30/16-4/26/17). The show will not travel. ✚ Reflections by contemporary artists, including Sally Mann, Edmund de Waal, and Katharina Grosse, as well as recollections by his former companion and the president of the Cy Twombly Foundation, Nicola Del Roscio.

Death Drive

There Are No Accidents Stephen Bayley

Between Living Time and Rocky Space Paul Shepheard

A London Times 2016 Book of the Year

Stephen Bayley recounts delightfully grotesque tales about celebrities done in by trees, by lampposts, or by nonentities in ancient Chevys. This is both an appreciative essay about the historic place of the automobile in the modern imagination and an exploration of the circumstances of multiple celebrity denouements, including Isadora Duncan, Jane Mansfield, James Dean, Jackson Pollock, Princess Grace, and Helmut Newton, among many others. En route, the narrative traces one very big arc – the role of the car in extending or creating the personality of a celebrity – and concludes by confronting the imminent death of the car itself.

Two generations ago, architects had a real job to do, rebuilding cities shattered by war. It turned out to be more difficult than it looked. Now the grandchildren of those utopians have a different role, which is to rescue a world that is being turned by the media, the money men and the machines into a replica of itself. Architect Paul Shepheard takes a sideways look at this elusive task and finds himself writing an ode to buildings, which asks: What are they? When do they happen? And how are they used?

Peter Salter

Deanna Petherbridge

Walmer Yard Peter Salter, Peter Beardsell, Mark Dorrian, Crispin Kelly and Niall McLaughlin. Photographer: Hélène Binet

Walmer Yard, in London, is the first residential building in Britain designed by architect Peter Salter. Although modest in scale, the project is extraordinary in many ways. On an irregularly shaped site, Salter’s design brings four houses into a complex relationship with each other, half-formal, half-familiar, interdependent yet solitary. This book documents the project with Peter Salter’s original penand-ink drawings and Hélène Binet’s extraordinary photographs.

Drawing and Dialogue Deanna Petherbridge, Roger Malbert, Martin Clayton, and Angela Wright

Since the 1960s, Deanna Petherbridge has made drawings, written on art and architecture, designed murals and stage-sets, curated exhibitions, taught in the studio and lectured internationally – a career trajectory that has anticipated the multiple practices of younger conceptual artists. Her drawings are to be found in major collections. This new monograph is published to coincide with a retrospective at the Whitworth Art Gallery.
