GMA to present lecture on the Crusades The Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning will present “Envisioning the Crusades in Medieval Europe, a slide lecture by Dartmouth College Professor Cecilia Gaposchkin, on Thursday July 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Hunter Seminar Room at Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester. The Crusades – launched in 1095 by Pope Urban with the intention of wresting back control of Jerusalem from Muslim

control – have had an enduring influence on Christian-Muslim and east-west relations to this day. Professor Gaposchkin’s lecture will look at some of the earliest explanations, motivations and contemporary interpretations of what the crusades were all about. As an assistant professor of history at Dartmouth, Cecilia Gaposchkin works on late medieval French cultural history. Her first book, “The Making of

Saint Louis (IX) of France, was published by Cornell University Press in 2008. She is now working on a devotional history of the crusades, tentatively entitled “Crusade, Liturgy, Ideology and Devotion: 1050-1400. Registration fee is $15. Starting tonight, Northshire Bookstore is offering a full slate of author events for the weekend. On Thursday at 7 p.m., the store presents author Simon Van Booy with his critically acclaimed debut novel, “Everything Beautiful Began After. A self-taught writer who only discovered books while at college, Van Booy grew up in London, went to college in Kentucky, and now lives in Brooklyn. His novel is about a tragedy that befalls three friends, and the two years one character spends on airplanes trying to outrun it. Simon Van Booy is the author of “Love Begins in Winter, which won the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. His essays have been published in The New York Times and on NPR’s “All Things Considered. Aspiring chef Molly Birnbaum appears on Friday, July 22 at 7 p.m. with her memoir “Season to Taste. At age 22, Birnbaum was preparing to become a chef as she worked at a Boston bistro. But a few months prior to entering the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, she was hit by a car. The accident fractured her skull, broke her pelvis and tore her knee to shreds. But the accident also destroyed her sense of smell – a critical element in perceiving flavor – and important in cooking. Her memoir tells the story of what came next as she set off on a quest to overcome her condition. Molly Birnbaum is a recipient of the Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship in Arts and Culture from Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism. Her work has appeared in The New York Times and she writes the popular food blog, “My Madeleine. On Sunday, July 24 at 6 p.m., Hollie McNeill, owner of Riding Right Farm in South Cambridge, New York, will present her new book “40 Fundamentals of English Riding. The book offers in-depth instruction on the 40 basic elements that form the foundation for success in any equestrian discipline, and

includes a DVD showing action sequences of each exercise. It is the perfect training companion for equestrians of all levels. Hollie McNeill is the head trainer at Riding Right Farm, which provides more than 3,000 riding lessons each years, plus numerous shows, clinics and events. She holds a German Trainer’s License and an Inter national Trainer’s

Passport, which is recognized by the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI). McNeill has also been awarded Large and Small Bronze Performance Medals in Dressage and Jumping from the German Federation (FN). Watercolorist to exhibit The Gallery at Equinox Village has opened its exhibit, “Memories on Paper, an exhibit of watercolor paintings by artist Marijke De Roo Westberg. Now living in Londonderry, Vermont, Marijke De Roo Westberg was born in a Japanese prison camp while her Dutch father was completing his military obligation in Indonesia during World War II. She spent her first three years imprisoned in the camp with her mother. When her family was finally able to return to the Netherlands, they found that their house had been completely bombed by the Germans. With no place to live, the family moved frequently from one family member’s house to the next.

Marijke started drawing as a way to amuse herself. When she was 10, her family immigrated to the United States. While living in Connecticut, she started taking oil painting lessons, and continued painting throughout her life. Now retired in Londonderry, she still takes classes and paints almost every day. Today, Westberg’s paintings are all over the world, in countries including Sweden, the Netherlands, France, and several states in the U.S. The exhibit at the Gallery at Equinox village will run until August 15. To attend the opening reception, please RSVP to 802-3624061.
