It's Car Show Weekend! By Linda Ellingsworth It’s one of the area’s most popular events - the 26th Annual Manchester Antique and Classic Car Show opens on Friday, June 8 at the Dorr Farm in Manchester. Presented by the Manchester and the Mountains Chamber of Commerce, the show features almost 500 classic cars on display. “It’s going to be a really good weekend,” said Berta Maginniss, executive director of the Manchester Chamber. She noted that the show was named one of Yankee Magazine’s “Best of New England” events for 2012. This year’s featured “marques” are BMW and Buick. In a first for the event, Dennis Gage, the popular host of the television show “My Classic Car” will be on hand throughout the weekend to film seg-

The auto maker will have a specially designed course at the Dorr Field where they will be conducting their Land Rover Driving School. The driving school is free of charge to car show attendees, who will navigate the course with a Land Rover instructor on board.

Show Continued from front page Activities start at noon on Friday at Dorr Farm, where an Early Bird Flea Market with 100 vendors will be open to the public until 6 p.m. From 6 to 9 p.m., the Cruise-in will take place on Depot Street. The show opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, with 50 classes of cars from 1930 to 1987 on display until 4 p.m. on the field. At 4 p.m. on Saturday, a Car Parade will wind through town, offering spectators an opportunity to see the show cars in

action. Later in the evening, the Dorr Barn will host a giant Barn Dance which will be open to the public. The show reopens at 8 a.m. on Sunday, June 10 with a vintage motorcycle display. Car judging will take place from 8 to11:30 a.m., with awards given out at 2 p.m. The show closes at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Rockwell Kent's "Egypt" at museum A new exhibit focusing on the life and work of note painter Rockwell Kent, “Rockwell Kent’s ‘Egypt’: Shadow and Light in Vermont,� will open on Saturday, June 9 at the Bennington Museum. The exhibit runs through October 30. This exhibit and accompanying catalog is the first compre-

hensive documentation of the Vermont period of the artist’s life. In the spring of 1919, Kent purchased a hill farm called “Egypt� on the slopes of Red Mountain in Arlington. He made use of the sublime backdrop, overlooking the mountains of valleys of the Green Mountains, to create a series of

Manchester's Lauren Cauley in concert Back in 1998, a young Lauren Cauley took her first violin lesson with the Manchester Music Festival’s Joana Genova as part of MMF’s “Music Education Week.� Cauley excelled in the instrument, and will return this weekend to her hometown of Manchester on Saturday, June 9 at 4 p.m. to perform a concert at the First Congregational Church. Ms. Cauley’s concert will also include former MMF Young Artist pianist Noah Lindquist. The concert will feature works by Mozart, Grieg, and Sarasate. Enjoy summer fun at an VAE Art Camp Parents looking for fun and creative activities for their children will find many options at the Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) art camps this summer. The North Bennington-based organization is offering 14 themed camps for all ages, exploring ceramics, studio fun, water arts, fashion, film, animation, and more. For preschoolers ages three to five, VAE is offering two camps. On the Farm! gives the youngest campers an opportunity to dig in the dirt, plant seeds, learn about healthy food and farm animals as they create in arts activities. Two sessions from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Monday through Friday, from June 18 to 22 and June 25 to 29 will be offered. Also for preschoolers is Puppets!, an art camp in which children will create various puppets such as sock puppets,

Lyme Disease lecture Thursday Dr. Ronald Stram of the Stram Center for Integrative Medicine will give a free public lecture entitled “Lyme Disease: Deciphering Fact from Fiction and Improving Outcomes with a Whole System Approach” at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 14 in the Mark Skinner Library Meeting Room. Vermont health officials announced the number of Lyme Disease cases from exposure to ticks is on the rise, with more than 600 cases reported in Vermont last year. “Tick-borne disease is the fastest-growing infectious disease in American, and the increase I’ve seen in patients with Chronic Lyme Disease is alarming,” said Dr. Stram. The integrative model used to treat the disease addresses the patient’s lifestyle, including diet, exercise and social environments. A customized treatment plan is formulated that is unique to the patient and their story. Dr. Ronald Stram is the found and medical director of the Stram Center for Integrative Medicine in Bennington, VT and Delmar, NY. Open Studio-Clay Camp will take place from July 9-13 and July 23-27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ages six to 12 will explore 2-D and 3-D mediums while working with soapstone, plaster, woodworking, jewelry, collage and more. They will also learn to work on the potter’s wheel with instructor Arline Mayer. Tuition is $185 per week, including materials and firing fees. Animation 101 Camp from July 16 to20 provides campers with the opportunity to produce a short animated film. At the camp’s conclusion, stu-

dents will take part in a public viewing of the film they’ve made. Tuition is $210, including materials. At Fashion Week Camp, budding fashionistas will learn to design their own outfits, jewelry, belts, hats and outerwear. The week (July 30 to August 3) culminates in a fashion show, complete with music. Tuition is $200 per week. Dance/Open Studio Combo Camp, from July 30 to August 3 for ages six to nine, will feature a beginner/advance beginner jazz class, followed by art creativity in the afternoon with instructor Lindsey Anderson. Tuition is $185 per week. Water Art Camps take place form August 6 to 10 and from August 13 to 17. Campers ages eight to teens will explore the Paran Creek and create sculptures with the creek’s currents, pools and rocks. Tuition is $185 per

week. Cartooning Camp with cartoonist Wade Simpson will introduce students ages eight to adult to the wide world of comics and elementary approaches to writing and drawing sequential stories. The emphasis will be on storytelling and expression, not illustration ability. Camp take place from August 27 to 31, and Tuition is $210. VAE will also offer two half-day camps during July. Morning Clay Camp, an introduction to clay for ages six to eight, will take place from July 1 to22 from 10 a.m. to noon. Dorset Players announce auditions to be held Tuesday The Dorset Players will hold auditions for “The Great American Trailer Park Musical,” their first show of the season, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12 in the basement of the United Church of Dorset on Church Street. The two-act musical comedy, written by David Nehls and Betsy Kelso, explores the relationships between the tenants at the Armadillo Acres Trailer Park in Florida. Parts available include two women in their twenties, three

women between 30 and 50-something, one man in his early twenties, and one in his forties. The five female parts need soprano and alto voices, while the two male parts are mid-range baritone/tenors. If possible, those auditioning should prepare to sing some sort of a rock/ blues number. Those auditioning are asked to arrive by 6:45 p.m. to complete applications. Super for a day Middle school students at Manchester Elementary and Middle School and Maple Street School are invited to become a “Super for a Day” at the Roundabout this summer. Open to students entering grades six through eight, the program will run on Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. from June 20 to August 22. Participants will receive a Function Junction T-shirt. At the conclusion of the session, students will be asked to write a short paragraph about the progress at Function Juntion and what they learned during the morning.
