Vacation fun and activities at Spring Break Camps Spring Break is almost here, and fun activities abound in the area for children of all ages. Here are some possibilities slated for next week. Vermont Arts Exchange The Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) in North Bennington will hold three Vacation Art Camps for children ages three through 14 on Monday through Friday, April 16 to 20. Littlest campers ages three to five will discover springtime wonders in VAE’s Preschool Art Camp. Artist-instructor Daydrielane Graham will help children explore spring themes with various art and craft projects, along with music and dance. The camp will run April 16 to 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Fee is $160, and children must be out of diapers. Children ages six to 12 can explore a wide variety of media in Open Studio Camp with instructor Arline Mayer. The camp runs April 16 to 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee is $185 and campers should bring a bag lunch. Animation Exploration Camp will be held for students ages eight to 14. Campers will learn how to create stop-motion animation from instructor Peter Wallis and will execute a

Children will search for different ways that animals are shown in the museum, and then make their own animal artwork. Bennington Monument opens The Bennington Battle Monument, Vermont’s tallest structure, will open for the season April 14. Dedicated and opened to the public Aug. 19, 1891, the 306-foot monument was built to commemorate the Battle of Bennington, fought Aug. 16, 1777, a pivotal battle in the Revolutionary War. From the observation level of the monument, accessible by elevator, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York can be seen. Admission is $3 for adults; $1 for children 6 through 14; and free for children younger than 6. Tickets can be purchased in the gift shop. The monument will be open daily until Oct. 31. Events for the season include the annual Climb of Your Life, sponsored by the American Lung Association, on May 19; the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4; and Bennington Battle Day — celebrated Aug. 18 and Aug. 19 — complete with cannons and re-enactors. Artist Andrew Orr workshop at SVAC The Southern Vermont Arts Center (SVAC) will host a workshop “Ideas for Painting Water” with artist Andrew Orr on Saturday, April 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Hay Madeira Studios. In this one-day oil painting workshop, popular local artist Andrew Orr will present ideas and techniques for painting water as part of the landscape. There will be an opportunity for students to work in several exercises that will put into practice the theories expressed in the demonstrations. Orr combines realism and touches of impressionism to create paintings that reflect his love of nature and beauty. His work has been shown in galleries throughout the United States, and he has won many awards including the Barbara Carter Award for Excellence from the Oil Painters of America.
