Town Clerk Katy Thornblade is a busy woman, but she took time out to tell what keeps her busiest ‌ in between visitors to the office. First, she is keeper of the records, so every time there is a land transaction, she has to record the deeds and mortgages. She is also the person responsible for ensuring elections run smoothly, so she takes calls on when and where the polls are open, how to get absentee ballots, voter registration and the like. And in fact, when we called, she had a person in the office picking up an absentee ballot, with questions about where, when and how to file it. From visitors to town, she most often fields genealogical requests, as the town has records of births, deaths and marriages dating back to the 1760s. That in itself is unusual for a small town, as many of the records have been lost in floods and fires over the decades. We had hoped to get through the top five queries Katy handles, but we had to stop after three because the next visitor needed help recording a foreclosure transaction, which we can all agree is a more pressing matter. If you have a question for Katy Thornblade, she can be reached at 468-2212, but be forewarned: She’s busy, so please keep it brief.

from the center of town to Lake Bomoseen, a destination for tourists vacationing during the summer. The Hydeville area flourished in the mid-19th century as a slate quarrying and milling center.

Between 1900 and 1940 several fires occurred in Castleton Village, Castleton Corners and Hydeville, as well as at the lakeside resorts. Despite this destruction of hotels and the original commercial and

industrial areas of its villages, the town of Castleton retains an architectural heritage spanning two hundred years of Vermont history. Castleton’s mile-long tree-shaded Main Street, with its array of Federal

and Greek Revival style houses and public buildings, many by builder Thomas Royal Dake, has been listed almost in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places.

Castleton evolved. In 1867 the State Normal School, as teachers' colleges were often called at the time, was founded in Castleton. For a few years it was housed entirely in the

The Old Cobbler Shop Possibly the oldest brick structure in Vermont, The Old Cobbler shop was acquired by the Castleton Historical Society in 1947 and turned into their first museum in 1954. Located at the corner of Main Street and Cemetery Street, The Old Cobbler Shop stands on a corner of a piece of land that Zadock Remington bought from Amos Bird in 1769. Remington's Tavern was located further west on this piece of land. David and Zadock Remington sold 6 ž acres of their land to Nehemiah Hoyt in 1774. Nehemiah Hoyt in his turn, sold it to Enos Merrill in 1794 by which time this small brick building had been erected which Enos Merrill used for a tannery and cobbler's shop.
