Woody Jackson is Artist in Residence at Maple Street School Vermont artist Woody Jackson spent two days in residence at Maple Street School last week, painting watercolor landscapes with students. Artists in kindergarten through 8th grade spent two days trying to capture the Vermont landscape while learning the fine craft of watercolor painting under Mr. Jackson’s gentle guidance. Mr. Jackson is probably best known for his partnership with Ben and Jerry’s. In 1983, Ben Cohen left Woody a message that would lead to a licensing agreement between the two, allowing Mr. Jackson to become a full-time artist. His cows have become the look
of Ben and Jerry’s, gracing ice cream containers, the walls of their ice cream shops, billboards and trucks. In his free time, Mr. Jackson coaches his children’s soccer teams and visits one or two schools annually as an artist in residence. Many thanks to Maple Street School art teacher, Leslie Sullivan, to Andrea and Larry Ross for hosting Mr. Jackson at their home, to John Rindell of our local Ben and Jerry’s for supplying ice cream for the entire school, and to the parents and faculty of Maple Street School for making this opportunity happen.

Seven Solo Exhibitions at Southern Vermont Arts Center $/:$<6,1 672&.
• Septic Tank Pumping • Portable Toilet Rentals • High Pressure Line Jetting • New Septic Systems Installed • Repairs to Old Systems
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Yester House for exhibitions by Southern Vermont Arts Center artists Alan Nyiri, Barbara Pafume, Leslie Parke, Leslie Peck, Bonnie Rapaport, Cynthia Rosen, and Elaine Witten. The reception is free to the public and is accompanied by complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres. Elaine Witten presents a mixed media show of sculpture, painting, and drawing. An award-winning bronze sculptor, Witten is known for classic form, creative use of negative space, and illusion of movement. In Cynthia Rosen’s work, abstraction meets realism, giving a new face to the classic landscape. Her energetic, layered brushstrokes and vivid color choices create dynamic
scenes with a twist. Bonnie Rapaport rekindles the dramatic chiaroscuro style of classic European still life, using dark shadows and theatrical lighting to compliment her vases, flowers, and fruits. Using crisp, smooth brushstrokes, Leslie Peck creates realistic, bold portraits of animals and still lifes, bringing out the subtle beauty and simplicity of their nature with strong contrasts and dignified ambiance. Leslie Parke explores the line between the abstract and the representational in her exhibit entitled “Everything is Real. At first glance, her paintings appear to be abstract, yet each portrays a tangible subject, bringing into question our perception of reality. Award-winning watercolor artist Barbara Pafume draws inspiration from the magic and mystery of the natural world.
Through deep color and strong contrast, Pafume aims to transform everyday scenes into memorable moments of beauty, drama, and passion. Alan Nyiri’s expansive photographs of the Vermont landscape offer a look at our surroundings through an enchanted lens. Mountains, valleys, forests, and streams come alive in striking light, dramatic color, and decisive composition. The shows run through July 20. The Southern Vermont Arts Center is located on West Road in Manchester, Vermont, one mile north of the Equinox Resort. It features a museum, performing arts pavilion, education center, sculpture garden, hiking trails and the largest permanent art gallery in Vermont. For hours and further information, go to www.svac.org or call 802-362-1405.

Vermont patriot to be discussed Zion Church and St. John’s Chapel Summer Schedule The Bennington Historical Society (BHS) will present noted authors and historians Jennifer S.H. Brown and Wilson B. Brown on Sunday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at the Bennington Museum. The Browns will discuss their book “Col. William Marsh, Vermont Patriot and Loyalist. The Browns’ engaging book tells the story of William Marsh (1738-1816), an intriguing but little-known Revolutionary figure. Before the American Revolution, Marsh and several thousand other New Hampshire Grants settlers faced grave challenges
to their land titles from New York which laid claim to the territory that was to become Vermont. A colonel in the Manchester, Vt. militia, Marsh supported the Green Mountain Boys and played a key role in uniting the Vermont towns as they organized to request the American Continental Congress to recognize them as a state. When the congress refused, Marsh turned to the British as offering the best prospects for Vermont as it struggled to survive on its own. Although the British failed to make Vermont into a British colony, Marsh and other
Vermont loyalists and partisans secured Vermont’s neutrality in the later years of the Revolution, protecting it from the severe British raids. This presentation, made possible by the members of the Bennington Historical Society, is free and open to the public. Attend the program for a chance to win fabulous door prizes. For more information on this and other BHS programs, visit benningtonmuseum.org/bennington-historicalsociety. The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street in Bennington, Vt. and can be reached at 802-447-1571.
