ones, if I wanted bright lights, I’d have moved to Hollywood. And she would roar. One day she told me she was getting lamer and they had ordered her an electric wheel chair. She didn’t want any part of it. Well, you oughta see her go when she got it. I’m a tella, you didn’t want to be on the Poultney sidewalks on the days she woke up late and was heading to Dunkins for her donuts! May god be with you, Hazel Monroe.

Now this goes back to when I worked for my dad at the Fair Haven era. Ray Little’s cash market was the local butcher shop. Ray was an old-fashioned butcher and people flocked from all over for his variety of livers, homemade sausage, smoked bacon and hams and fresh cut meats. But he also catered to kids and that was what the Lowell boys were after. You could get any kind of candy bar, daredevils, cupcakes or cookies in a package, and Pepsi and Coke were plentiful too. The era office was right next door and that put us as regular customers and gave us contact with all the kids in the neighborhood. George and Mildred Lowell lived just over the hill on River Street and that made their kids regulars at Little’s market.

After the kids had all graduated from high school, the whole family packed up and moved to Florida and it was 25 years before any of the kids came back for a visit. About 10 years ago, Larry showed up at my brother’s barber shop and Billy (who was closer to his age) sent him down to Poultney to see me. We chatted about the good old days and some of the old characters who had passed on. We traded stories about Clyde Morris, Annie Enos, Pec Enos, Charlie Balloy, Art Blanchard, Mabel Graves, Jane Lloyd and Hula Brown. We had a great visit and hashed over all kinds of good old memories and then he was headed back to Florida never to be seen again. May god be with you, Larry Lowell.

Battlefield offering chance to view meteor show The night sky will be putting on a major meteor storm, if predictions are correct, on Saturday, May 24, as debris from Comet 209P/LINEAR, discovered in 2004, burns up in Earth’s atmosphere. You’re invited to the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton from 8 to 10 p.m. or later, as members of the Green Mountain Alliance of Amateur Astronomers share their telescopes and extensive knowledge. Bring blankets and flashlights. Call ahead to confirm at (802) 273-2282. The Hubbardton Battlefield, with its sweeping mountain views and no modern light pollution, is the perfect spot to observe the night sky. The program is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated. This is the first of five 2014 astronomy programs scheduled

Bluegrass quintet to perform at Tinmouth Old Firehouse Possum Haw, a original bluegrass and country-folk quintet from Burlingtonwill light up the Tinmouth Old Firehouse Friday May 23 at 7:30 p.m. Since 2004, the band has evolved to combine award-win-

ning, evocative songwriting and singing with top-notch bluegrass instrumentation. On the stage, Possum Haw offers stellar vocal harmonies, original music, and impressive acoustic instrumentation. This is definitely a case of a band that sounds like its name; the music of Burlington foursome Possum Haw is a slice of Appalachia on the shores of Lake Champlain. The group has released four albums, including “Waiting and Watching earlier this year.

Poultney Rotary Club promotes water safety The Poultney Rotary Club recently brought Josh the Otter to meet with preschoolers and kindergarten students at Poultney Elementary. The youngsters at Leap Frog Preschool and Katie’s Center also enjoyed an energetic lesson on promoting water safety. The program included a reading of “Josh the Baby Otter book where they learned

to “stay away from water unless with an adult and to always swim with a buddy. The Poultney Rotary partnered with the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation which was recently nationally recognized for its work with organizations and has received numerous awards for its efforts to promote water safety awareness throughout

the U.S. The foundation was created to honor the memory of Joshua, the two-year-old boy who died after falling into the family pool. Their goal is to empower children to be safe in and around all bodies of water to prevent a similar tragedy. The Poultney Rotary Club plans on making this an annual event and expanding it to more area schools next year.
