James Greenwood with 165 runs/145,222 vertical feet. The Stratton Foundation supports local Vermont youth in need, and last year distributed $85,000 for food clothing, dental care and educational opportunities.
Art Reception at Dorset Village Library Photographer Seline Skoug will be feted at a public reception on Saturday, May 3 at the Dorset Village Library. The free reception will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and all works will be for sale with proceeds benefiting the library. Seline Skoug began shooting photos as a young woman during her travels from Long Island Sound to Norway to the Adirondacks to the beaches of St. Croix and to the rivers and mountains of Vermont. Along
the way, her work was shaped by her appreciation of the natural world and love of people and community. Skoug’s photographs are notable for their sensitive treatment of light and lyrical sense of humor. In 2012, one of her photographs was awarded an honorable mention by Horticulture Magazine. Her winning photo, taken in Sunderland, Vt., was chosen from 8,000 photos. Skoug lives in Arlington, Vt. She is Executive Director
of Southern Vermont Arts Center. She is on the board of Meals on Wheels of Bennington County and an A-EMT with the Arlington and Manchester Rescue Squads. She is also a volunteer fly-fishing instructor with Casting for Recovery. Skoug’s show will extend through the month of May. For more information, contact the library at 867-5774 or visit the website atwww.dorsetlibaryinfo.org

This Week at Northshire Bookstore Two authors who disconnected from social media to meet their readers, two poets, the author of a fishing tale, and the teacher whose “you’re not special speech rode a wave of controversy last year, will appear at Northshire Bookstore this week. On Saturday, April 26 at 7 p.m., poets Leland Kinsey and Leah Umansky will read selected poems from their collections. Born and raised on a farm in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, Kinsey’s latest collection is “Winter Ready: Poems. Leah Umansky is the author of the Mad-Men inspired chapbook, “Don Dreams and I Dream and the full-length poetry collection, “Domestic Uncertainties. In “Taking It On the Road, Carla Buckley, author of “The Deepest Secret and Jenny Milchman, author of “Ruin Falls will appear at Northshire bookstore at 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 27. In “Ruin Falls, Jenny Milchman ratchets up the tension with Ruin Falls an edge-ofyour-seat story of a mother determined to find her missing children. Milchman is the chair of the International Thriller Writers’ Debut Authors Program, and founder of Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day. Carla Buckley is the author of
“The Deepest Secret, “Invisible, and “The Things That Keep Us Here. On Friday, May 2 at 7 p.m., James Hurley presents “The Contest, the story of a group of men who devise a friendly fishing contest that quickly descends into a bitter rivalry that overtakes reason. David McCullough, Jr. appears on Saturday, May 3, at 7 p.m. with “You are (Not) Special, his new book that expands profoundly on his popular commencement speech--a call to arms against a prevailing, narrow, conception of success. Lamenting the tendency of Americans as of late to “love accolades more than genuine achievement, McCullough, Jr., with three memorable words — “you’re not special —went from a popular English teacher at Wellesley High School to an Internet sensation. Children today, says David McCullough--high school English teacher, father of four, and son and namesake of the famous historian--are being encouraged to sacrifice passionate engagement with life for specious notions of success. Peter Gilbert to discuss Frost poems, April 27 Peter Gilbert, the Vermont Humanities Council’s executive director, will lead a discussion of a trio of Robert Frost’s spring poems at the Dorset Inn on Sunday, April 27 at 3 p.m. The discussion is free and open to the public and will take place in the Inn’s living room. The event is presented with the Dorset Village
Library. The discussion will focus on three of Robert Frost’s mostloved poems, each about spring: “Nothing Gold Can Stay, “Two Tramps in Mud time, and “Mending Wall. Gilbert has been VHC’s executive director since 2002 and is the literary executor of the Robert
Frost estate. Since 2008 he has led discussions of Frost poems for VHC as part of the “You Come Too series, which began at VHC’s offices in Montpelier. Participants may read the poems in advance or read them upon arriving. For more information, call Dorset Village Library at 802-867-5774.
Stoneware Collectors to meet, May 2 The Stoneware Collectors’ Group will meet at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 2 at the Bennington Museum for a presentation by William C. Ketchum, Jr. entitled “An Overview of New York State Redware. A well-known figure in the antiques world, Ketchum has written many books on various topics including “Potters and Potteries of New York State, 1650-1900, and “American Redware. The lecture is included with the $10 admission to the Bennington Museum. Those who would like to browse through the museum galleries
prior to the lecture may do so. This event is open to the public. For additional information, please contact Steve or Lorraine German at 860-653-5733 or visit their website at www.madriverantiques.com/Bennington. htlm. The Stoneware Collectors' Group began in the late 1980s with an annual stoneware auction in Vermont. Although the auction eventually ended, the stoneware dealers and collectors continued their periodic get-togethers in Bennington, Vt. to swap stories as well as stoneware. The result was the
Stoneware Collectors' Sale and Lecture, held twice a year, in the spring and fall. Sale and Lecture, held twice Visit www.benningtonmuseum.org or call 802-447-1571 for more information about the museum.
Equinox Preserve to Raise Ash Tree Awareness On Sunday, April 27 to Saturday, May 3, Vermont will celebrate its first Ash Tree Awareness Week to celebrate and recognize the valuable contributions of ash trees and continue to raise awareness of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and its social, economic, and environmental impacts. A 12-foot ash tree provides benefits estimated at $131 annually by filtering air pollutants, mitigating storm water runoff, sequestering carbon, conserving energy and increasing prop-
erty values. Ash trees are a valuable resource for wood (baseball bats, tool handles, firewood, black ash baskets), for wildlife, for water quality, for shade and beauty. Losses to the ash products industry in the eastern U.S. alone are estimated at $25 billion. All of Vermont's 160 million ash trees could be lost to the invasive tree-killing pest, the Emerald Ash Borer. To help raise awareness, the Equinox Preservation Trust will mark ash trees along popular trails on the Preserve.
Information will also be available regarding identification of both ash trees and the emerald ash borer. Hike your favorite trails during Ash Tree Awareness week, visit the info kiosks to pick up information regarding EAB and other invasive insect pests, and take the opportunity to observe the widespread distribution of ash trees. For more information about this event, contact Equinox Preserve Steward Rick LaDue at 366-1400 or find out more at www.vtinvasives.org.
