New Exhibit at Bennington Museum The Bennington Museum is showing a new exhibit, “Three Vermont Impressionists now through June 17. Drawn from the museum’s collection and that of private collectors, the exhibit features the work of George Loftus Noyes (1864-1954), Arthur Gibbs Burton (1883-1969) and Clifford Adams Bayard (1892-1965). All painted southern Vermont landscapes. Although Impressionism originated in France around 1870, it took decades to become popularly accepted in America. George Loftus Noyes is regard-

ed as one of the finest impressionist of the Boston School, achieving great success in the first two decades of the 20th century. A friend and colleague of Hudson River School painter Frederick Edwin Church, he lived the latter years of his life in Pittsford, Brandon and Dorset, Vt. Arthur Gibbs Burton, a painter of rural scenes, lived for a time in Brattleboro and later Townshend. In 1988, two decades after his death, 150 of his paintings were found in the Townshend house and were

exhibited for the first time. Clifford Adams Bayard is best known for impressionistic landscape paintings that evoke the rich colors and seasonal moods of the Vermont landscape. Bayard would not allow a gallery to handle his works, so after his death in 1965, his work became largely forgotten. This exhibition is the first time a collection of his work has been seen in nearly 50 years. For more information, call the museum at 802-447-1571 or visit www.benningtonmuseum. org.
