Doris Kearns Goodwin to Appear in Saratoga Pulitzer Prize winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin will discuss her new book “the Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and the Golden Age of Journalism at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Saratoga City Center in Saratoga Springs. The event is part of the Off the Shelf: Authors in Conversation with Joe Donahue series. After Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, Doris Kearns Goodwin wields her magic on another larger-than-life president, and another momentous and raucous American time period as she brings Theodore Roosevelt, the muckraking journalists, and the Progressive Era to life. Doris Kearns Goodwin is the author of the runaway bestseller “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. She won the Pulitzer Prize in history for “No Ordinary Time:

Till Next Year, “The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys, and “Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream. She lives in
Concord, Mass., with her husband, Richard N. Goodwin. Tickets are going quickly, but a limited number are still available. Tickets are $45 for one seat and one copy of Goodwin’s “The Bully Pulpit, $48 for two seats and one copy of the book, or $25 for one seat and no book. Tickets are available at either Northshire Bookstore location (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. or Manchester Center, Vt.), or online at northshire.com. Tickets can also be purchased by phone at 802-3622200. Off the Shelf: Authors in Conversation - a partnership between the Northshire Bookstore and WAMC – Northeast Public Radio - is a live stage event featuring Joe Donahue of WAMC’s National Productions The Book Show. Each event is taped and later aired on WAMC, reaching thousands of listeners, as well as several other radio stations nationally.
Holiday Show Rehearsals are underway for the cast of “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play at the Dorset Playhouse. This story of redemption resonates with all ages. A must-see holiday show, it will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14, and at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 15. This season, Angie Merwin is directing Joe Landry’s adaptation of this treasured holiday classic. While Landry has preserved everything we know and love about the original movie, the story-telling framework makes this particular production unique. We set out on Christmas Eve, 1946, as a group of radio actors gather at WDPI in Manhattan to perform live, in front of us, their “studio audience. The characters on stage adopt the names of radio actors, not the fictional characters in the story. This new take on the production promises to deliver the excitement of live radio without sacrificing the emotional potency of the original

Lecture Tells Story of Founding Fathers Duel, December 4 Award-winning biographer Willard Sterne Randall will share the story of a deadly 1804 duel between two of America’s Founding Fathers in a talk at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at First Congregational Church in Manchester. His talk, “The Duel: Aaron Burr vs. Alexander Hamilton, is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public. Was it murder or suicide when the vice president of the United States killed the first secretary of the treasury in a duel? Randall, award-winning biographer of Hamilton and five other Founding Fathers, will tell this fascinating story. Randall is the author of 13 books, including “Benjamin Franklin and His Son, “Benedict Arnold, Patriot and Traitor, “Thomas Jefferson, A Life, George Washington, A Life, and
“Alexander Hamilton: A Life. He recently received the Award of Merit from the American Revolution Roundtable in New York City, only awarded twice before in that organization's 50-year history. He teaches American history at Champlain College in Burlington. His latest biography is “Ethan Allen, His Life and Times. The Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays series is held on the first Wednesday of every month from October through May in nine communities statewide, featuring speakers of national and regional renown. Talks in Manchester are held at First Congregational Church (unless otherwise noted) and are hosted by Mark Skinner Library. All First Wednesdays talks are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Mark Skinner Library at 802-362-2607.
Holiday &RQWLQXHGIURPIURQWSDJH story. "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play" is truly a show for the whole family. Angie Merwin has cast 14 local actors to perform 35 roles. Even the children, Rowan Russell, Luke Chila, Livia Barclay and Noah Price, portray multiple characters; they are an undeniably talented and
energetic group of young thespians. Mark McChesney returns to the Dorset Playhouse after a five-year hiatus. Mark plays an actor/radio announcer by the name of Freddie Filmore. In his many roles, Mark will dazzle the audience with his mastery of accents. Jim Young plays Ray Gordon, the radio actor who brings to life such characters as Uncle Billy and Peter Bailey. You may recall Jim playing opposite the accomplished Caroline Hogan in last year’s
production of “The Crucible. This season, Caroline is Sally Applewhite, playing George Bailey’s “girl, Mary Hatch. Alec Lewis will perform as Jake Laurents playing George Bailey. Many years have passed since Alec graced The Dorset Playhouse stage as a child. Ticket prices are $20 for adults and $8 for students. Remember, tickets are two for the price of one for members on opening night. For more information, call 802-867-5777.
“Yarn Farming Author at Northshire Bookstore Well-known knitter Barbara Parry will be at the Northshire Bookstore on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m., to present her new book “Adventures in Yarn Farming. This new knitting book focuses on the sheep-to-shawl process by a well-known knitter, shepherd, and artisanal yarn producer. Gain an insider's view on fiber farming and yarn craft, from sheep to skein, all told through the eyes of shep-
herd and textile artisan Barbara Parry. Follow her flock over the course of a year and discover all the facets of life with sheep: from shearing day and lambing season, to preparing fiber for yarn. Along the way, you'll find projects for the fiber-obsessed by top knitwear designers, essays on country life, and over 100 stunning photographs. With the growing locavore
movement, the rising trend in sustainable farming, and the ever-increasing interest in crafting, this book is perfect for those who yearn for a closer connection to a rural lifestyle and who enjoy making things by hand. For more information on this and other events, call 802-3622200 or 1-800-437-3700, or visit the Northshire Bookstore website at www.northshire.com.
Janine Thomas to Exhibit at Dorset Library The Dorset Village Library will present artist Janine Thomas at a public reception on Saturday, Dec. 7. The free reception will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and all works will be for sale with proceeds benefitting the library. Janine Thomas honed her skills as the art teacher at the Hartford Central School in New York for many years. In 2002, she established Crowfield Studio and Gallery in Hartford. Her work represents the people, places, and animals inhabiting rural Washington County and
the Adirondack foothills. Her realistic images combine classic background tones to create visual works that isolate the unique qualities of chickens, sheep, horses, cows, farm families and 4H kids. Her chickens have become her agrarian trademark. More recently, Saratoga racehorses and their jockeys are featured prominently in her paintings. Thomas is a member and past president of the Guild of Adirondack Artists. Her work has been shown at Gardenworks and McCartee’s Barn, both in
Salem, N.Y., Sweet Pea Perennial Farm and Gallery in Bolton Landing, N.Y.; and Landscapes for Landsake 2013 in Cambridge, N.Y. She currently exhibits her paintings at Saratoga Signatures, Stockade Imports, and Front Street Home, all in the Saratoga area. Thomas’ show will extend through the month of December. For more information, you may contact the library at 867-5774 or visit the website at www. dorsetlibaryinfo.org.
Northshire Bookstore’s Book Angel Program Begins The Northshire Bookstore announces the start of its annual Book Angel Program for the 2013 season - a program that endeavors to put books into the hands of children that otherwise do not own or have access to them. The Northshire solicits names from approximately 20 area schools and organizations, requesting that age, grade, interests, and reading levels be included so that a match can be made between a child and a
book. Anonymity is protected at all costs. Customers can become involved in several ways: choose an angel illustrating the first name of each child and their interests from the Book Angel tree in the store to make a book match, or make a monetary donation through the register or donation cans that are placed at each register, book club dollars and gift cards may also be donated. For every five books
purchased the Northshire donates one. Additionally, if there is someone you’d like to recognize (that great teacher!) or commemorate a milestone you can contribute an honorary tribute gift to our Book Angel Program. We’ll give you a great certificate to send and announce your gift. For more information, call 802-362-2200, or visit the Northshire Bookstore website at www.northshire.com.

Bennington artist Renee Bouchard’s exhibit, entitled “Baby Ensor: Recent Paintings, has been extended through Dec. 19 at Southern Vermont College’s Burgdorff Gallery. Bouchard’s recent work chronicles the last 19 months of her life as a new mother, beginning with an oil painting, entitled “Conception. The watercolors were developed from her memory as well as in Bouchard’s
studio with her baby as the model while he was sleeping and playing. She is inspired by the work of people with mental illness, folk art, children’s art, and creations beyond the boundaries of the traditional “art world. Bouchard graduated from the Maine College of Art and attended the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Phoebe Flory Watercolor School. She is a recipient of
awards and honors from the Vermont Arts Council, Cooper Union, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, and from the Kate Millet Art Colony for Women. Her work has been represented at McDaris Fine Art in Hudson, N.Y.
