The classic story of Sleeping Beauty is told with a new twist when Fisher Elementary School’s third, fourth and fifth grade students perform Dave and Jean Perry’s musical, “The Hundred Year Snooze, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 and Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Mack Performing Arts Center. The Eighth Grace (Danielle Moscarello) has been forgotten, so she casts an evil spell on the princess. To ward off this evil spell, the five “wise guys or Sages of the kingdom (Austin Carrier, Mark Corey, Gabe Luce, Cameron Morris and Aiden Moscarello) outlaw all spinning wheels. However, one day, the princess pricks her finger on a spinning wheel and falls into an enchanted sleep for 100 years. Her parents, the king (Zack Tobbin) and queen (Alorah Hoyt) of the castle, and a courtfull of fun characters (Jason Bowen, Xander Hawley, Phoebe Marlowe, Ella Moses, Kolby Naaktgeboren, Jake Thomas, Taylor Wade) also fall under this evil spell given by the ignored and forgotten Old Grace. Can the dashing prince (Tyler Seeley) save the princess and the kingdom? Evan Hosley and Dominic Whalen are narrators and jesters of the play who help tell the story. Also rounding out the cast are Fisher students: Maria Blay, Abigail Bowen, William Burgess, Nevaeh Camp, Montgomery Crane, Olivia

When the ongoing argument escalates to violence, Sibyl Chase, played by Christy Vogel, and Victor Prynne, played by Christopher Restino, walk in on the ghastly scene. A dazzling comedic masterpiece, Noel Coward's "Private Lives" is a whirlwind of love and lust, riches and recklessness. It's
couple versus couple as the characters first romance, then comfort, then criticize and finally try to outwit each other. "Private Lives" boasts the largest, most intricate set ever built by the Players, with set design by Mona and Bill Wightman and painting and set design by Drew Hill. Northshire Bookstore On Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., Michael Nethercott presents his mad-cap mystery “The SĂŠance Society.â€? Engaging, charming, and smart, The SĂŠance Society is a fresh take on the traditional mystery genre for readers who love original characters, witty dialogue, and a great whodunit. Michael Nethercott is a past winner of The Black Orchid Novella Award, The Vermont Playwrights Award, and The Nor’easter Play Writing Contest. He lives with his wife in Guilford, Vermont. Gordon Chaplin presents “Full Fathom Five,â€? a scientific adventure story and a spellbinding memoir at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. After the presentation, there will be a booksigning reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres by Village Roots Catering. Gordon Chaplin’s father was a seemingly happy-golucky, charismatic adventurer who married a wealthy heiress and somehow trans-
formed himself into the author of a landmark scientific study, “Fishes of the Bahamas, published by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. As a young boy, the author took part in collecting specimens for his father. Fifty years later, he was asked to join a team from the same institution studying the state of sea life in the Bahamian waters where he grew up. The first of the sea changes presented in this eloquent book stems from climate change and is the drastic transformation of ocean life due to global warming. The second is his father’s miraculous transformation from presumed playboy into scientist. Fifty years later, returning to his childhood home, Gordon delves into the mysteries of his father’s life and the impossibility of ever truly recovering the past, or ever returning home. Bennington Historical Society Hosts Food Drive, October 18 Shays’ Rebellion Talk, October 20 The Manchester VFW Post 6741 will conduct a Community Food Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18.
On Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m., the Bennington Historical Society (BHS) will hold its annual meeting immediately prior to their scheduled program in the Ada Paresky Education Center of the Bennington Museum. All members are encouraged to attend. The meeting will serve as the forum to elect officers and to approve changes to the Society’s by-laws. The meeting and program are free, and the program is open to the public. Following the brief meeting, BHS hosts Tom Goldscheider as he presents “Shays’ Rebellion: Reclaiming the Revolution. Shays' Rebellion is the name given to a series of protests in 1786 and 1787 by American farmers against state and local enforcement of tax collections and judgments. Farmers from New Hampshire to South Carolina took up arms. However, the rebellion was most serious in
Massachusetts, where bad harvests, economic depression, and high taxes threatened farmers with the loss of their farms. The rebellion took its name from its symbolic leader, Daniel Shays of Massachusetts, a former captain in the Continental army. As legend goes, Daniel Shays and some of his men, after fleeing arrest in Massachusetts, hid out in a cave located on Mount Anthony in Vermont. In 1787, Jonas Galusha, in one of his last acts as sheriff, dispersed a meeting of Shays’ men, who had gathered in Shaftsbury to plot a similar rebellion as that which had taken place in Massachusetts. Goldscheider focuses on the experiences of three men from a small frontier town in western Massachusetts imprisoned for debts they owed. Originally from New York, Goldscheider is a farrier who developed an interest in histo-
ry. He received his Masters degree in History at University of Massachusetts with a concentration in the Colonial Period. His master’s thesis was Shays’ Rebellion. The primary focus of his thesis was that the rebels were not dishonest ‘hooligans’ as portrayed by the government, but actually upper middle class farmers severely affected by the bad economy that got them into debt. The Bennington Historical Society is an affiliate of the Bennington Museum, which is located at 75 Main Street (Route 9), Bennington. The museum is open every day in October. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and students over 18. Admission is not charged for younger students or for visitors to the museum shop and cafĂŠ. Visit the museum’s website www. benningtonmuseum.org or call 802-447-1571 for more information.
The drive will take place outside of Shaw’s and Price Chopper Supermarkets.
