New Skete Blessing of the Animals Pet owners are invited to bring their favorite animal friend and join the monks at the New Skete Monastery in Cambridge, N.Y. for the annual Blessing of the Animals at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. Guests are welcome to arrive starting at 2 p.m. The event is held in celebration of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Guests are welcome to enjoy the grounds, have a photo taken with one of the brothers, and to learn about New Skete Prior to the outdoor service, the monks welcome everyone to visit the gift shop, check out the new products, and weather permitting, have your photo taken with your pet. Following the service, guests are welcome to linger

and enjoy light seasonal refreshments. For the safety of all creatures in attendance, pets must be under control, leashed, or contained at all times. Attendees can bring photos, statues, or keepsakes in memory of beloved pets who have passed or for those pets unable to travel due to size or practicability. The Monks of New Skete are renowned for their breeding of German Shepherd dogs, as well as for their dog training program. The event takes place against the backdrop of the autumn beauty of Two Top Mountain and the splendor of a gold-domed church. The New Skete monastic community was established in

1966 by a small group of Byzantine Rite Franciscan monks. In 1969, seven Poor Clare nuns from Indiana joined New Skete, inspired by the vision of contemporary monastic life. The nuns have been baking their worldfamous cheesecakes for more than 35 years. In 1983, a third monastery was added when eight dedicated parish members expressed their desire to live in accordance with the monastic way of life. New Skete Monastery is located at 250 New Skete Lane in Cambridge, N.Y. For more information about the community, call 677-3928 or visit www. or

/HWWHU To the Editor: It is with gratitude and deep respect that I extend a heartfelt thank you to Dina Janis for her outstanding leadership of the Dorset Theater Festival. Specifically, I would like to commend her and her team for organizing the second annual Jean E. Miller Young Playwrights Competition that provided a unique writing expe-

rience for middle and high school students. She and her team held a series of workshops in local schools last spring to help students gain insight into the art and craft of writing dramatic plays and to support teachers in the teaching of playwriting. On Friday, Sept. 13, Dina hosted a celebration of the winning plays, which were read by enthusiastic Bennington

Victorian Era Secrets Revealed at First Wednesdays Talk Middlebury College professor Antonia Losano will explore a lesser-known side of the staid Victorian era with her talk “Victoria’s Secrets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at First Congregational Church in Manchester. The talk is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public. Losano will explain how the Victorian era, the age of the realist novel and staid decorum, also had its guilty pleasures: mysteries, ghost stories, sci-

ence fiction, imperialist adventure tales, and radical fantasies of gender confusion. Losano is associate professor of English and American Literatures at Middlebury College. She teaches courses in 19th-century literature, gender studies, mystery fiction, and the intersections of literature and the visual arts. Her book on women writers and painters in the Victorian era, The Woman Painter in Victorian Literature, was published in 2008. “Victoria’s Secrets is sponsored by Keelan Family

Foundation. Mark Skinner Library is sponsored by The Perfect Wife Restaurant and Tavern, The Spiral Press CafĂŠ, and Vermont Renewable Fuels.
