Photographer James Link to Exhibit at Dorset Library

Published every Friday by Manchester Newspapers.

Photographer James Link will be at the Dorset Library on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to introduce his show, “The World as a Museum 2013.” The show features photographs from his recent travels to Kenya, Bali, Thailand, and Switzerland. The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. All photos are for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the library. James Link has lived in Sandgate, Vt. since 1979, where he operates the Sandgate Flower Farm. He grew up in Wisconsin and graduated from the University of WisconsinMadison. During this time he

majored in geography, but enrolled in several art courses that broadened his artistic experience and appreciation of art. During his 30 years of teaching elementary school in Bennington he traveled many times to Europe with his camera, and gradually broadened his travels to include the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Central America. Now retired, James has more time to travel. He feels that the world is a museum, and spends most of his time on the streets of cities and villages rather than in museums. Excursions through the countryside have allowed him to visit with people in the fields, and to discuss

farming and everyday life. Link has exhibited in Vermont at the Canfield Gallery in Arlington, the Northshire Medical Center in Manchester, the Bennington Free Library, the Pawlet Library, and the Kittay Library in Rupert. He has also earned numerous awards from peers and judges at the photo contest website PhotoBug. More photos may be seen and purchased on his website: http://photosbyjameslink. For more information, call the library at 867-5774 or visit their website at

On the Dorset Green there will be a town-wide scavenger hunt, a pie-judging contest, pottery decorating, and a concert with local bluegrass sensation Gold Town. "Discover Dorset will be an exciting and eventful weekend with something for all ages," said Roger Squire, one of the organizers of the festival. "We are looking forward to welcoming friends old and new to enjoy the beauty and talent of Dorset." Enjoy children's games on the lawn at Barrows House, a cooking demonstration with Chef Ray Chen at the Inn at West View Farm, and a tour of the new mountain bike trail. On Sunday, the Dorset Firehouse will be cooking up a old-fashioned pancake breakfast under the direction of H.N. Williams chef Ali Sherman. Art lovers will delight in the art show "Dorset Artists Then and Now" and the chance to visit the studios of fine furniture makers William Laberge

and Steven Holman. A Vermont cheese-tasting will be hosted by the Dorset Inn, a pastry chef will answer all your questions about making the perfect pie crust at J.K. Adams Kitchen Store, and Someday Farm stand will have farm animals for petting and their own produce for eating. Mettowee Mill Nursery and Landscaping will be celebrating its 40th year on Saturday with gardening speakers, demonstrations, and drawings for gift certificates. The Dorset Historical Society will demonstrate how to make apple cider using an antique cider press and provide maps for self-guided tours. Spend a leisurely fall weekend exploring this picture-perfect Vermont town. Well known for its classical New England architecture and breathtaking setting, Dorset is home to a number of excellent restaurants, elegant small inns, galleries and shops perfect for a getaway weekend. Vets to Be Honored, September 14 On Saturday, Sept. 14, Harry Chandler, Peter Davis, Dick Hittle and other veterans of World War II will be thanked and honored by a group called Honor Flight. This group organizes and covers the cost for WWII veterans to go on a flight to D.C. for the day to visit the WWII memorial and to be recognized, thanked and honored for their service to our great country. Rev. Jim Gray will accompany the three for the day. As a part of the return flight in the evening, there is an event called "Mail Call," when the vets get letters and cards from those who love them or just want to thank them for their service. Organizers are trying to generate as much mail as possible for Harry, Peter and Dick. Mail Call was an important time for soldiers away from home and on duty. So this effort is to recreate that moment for the vets on the flight. So, write as many thank you notes, post cards, cards of any sort, hand drawn cards....whatever....not just one... and mail

each to (each one should have an individual card): Honor Flight - Peter Davis , Honor Flight - Henry (Harry) Chandler, and Honor Flight - Richard (Dick Hittle),P.O. Box 621, Cobleskill, NY 12043. They have to receive them by Sept. 1, 2013. This part of the event is a surprise for the folks on the Honor Flight so keep it under your hat.

Blackwood Brothers Quartet to Perform in Bennington The amazing sound of fourpart harmony will fill the sanctuary at Green Mountain Christian Center at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 5, as the internationallyknown Blackwood Brothers Quartet presents a concert of gospel standards and favorites. All are welcome. The Blackwood Brothers Quartet was formed in 1934 with brothers Roy, Doyle and James along with Roy’s son,

R.W., who was killed in a tragic airplane accident in 1954. Roy and Doyle retired from the road in the late 1940s. James continued to lead the group into the early 1980s, and over the years it has become the best-known name in gospel quartet history. James, the last surviving member of the original quartet, went to be with the Lord in 2002, but his son James, Jr. (Jimmy) brought the name out of retire-

ment and now James’ youngest son, Billy, continues the 79-year family tradition of great gospel singing. The group today consists of Billy Blackwood, Wayne Little, Butch Owen, and Mike Helwig. The Green Mountain Christian Center is located at 440 Main St., Bennington, Vt. For more information, call the Center at 802-447-7224 or visit

The same is true for Norm Greenberg, who built

his father’s business into Bennington’s premier home improvement center but also is known for land conservation and a deep desire to give back to his community.” The ball will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the 1768 Hubbell Homestead at Colgate Park. Big Brothers Big Sisters Appoints New Program Coordinator The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) mentoring program has hired Kara Reimann, of Bennington, to be the new program coordinator in the Southshire, joining the Northshire program coordinator Susan Cottrell. “Mentoring offers young children one of the most important things they need to become successful—friendship with a caring adult,” said Ralph Provenza, executive director of United Counseling Service, which sponsors the BBBS program. “Kara brings energy and the

kind of new ideas that will help the program to grow and serve more young children,” Provenza continued. We’re fortunate to have her on our team.” Reinmann attended Sage College of Albany for Fine Arts and Sage Graduate School for Art Education. She is active in the capital district art scene teaching part time and creating art at the Art Center in Troy, New York. In 2007 she volunteered as a teacher in the House of Hope Orphanage in Ghana, Africa. Reinmann worked at UCS for a year and a half in Developmental Services in

Community Outreach Support. Reinmann is starting a new Lunchtime Mentoring Program in the Shaftsbury and Pownal Elementary Schools. This popular program arranges for mentors to meet their “Littles” once a week at school. The structured time and school setting make it easy for mentors to get their feet wet and get started. United Counseling Service serves children, adults, families, and seniors through nationally recognized counseling, early care and education, and clinical support. Visit www. to find out more.
