#2: Designing Strategy Stories »Strategy is quite cool – Not!« That is how managers describe the state of play of strategy in (bigger) companies. Correspondingly, a survey of 1800 executives, conducted by strategy consultants from Booz & Company, found that one out of two managers regards the strategy developed in their very own company as not successful. Not being able to see the forest for the trees: that is how one could encapsulate the misery of strategic planning as well as strategic thinking. To many objectives impede an understanding for the bigger mechanisms of action. Instead of giving direction executives focus on micromanagement and operative processes, always trying to optimize and to cut costs.

At the 2nd x-treat we will turn the spotlight on newer strategy concepts and tools, that could be adequate in the future looming ahead. Contentwise more specific than the first x-treat this event picks up on the feedback and continues the joint effort to find more suitable ways for management and organizational matters. At the very center we will explore the tension between conventional strategies, new business model design, as well as practical approaches like design management, which all open into the question: »What are we doing next?«

Program: The first day entirely focuses on methods and concepts. After an overview of essential approaches as well as challenges of classical strategy practice within organizations we put the squeeze on two neuralgic factors in the strategy process and confront us with input from design management: 1) Approaching an unknown future and 2) The re-integration of innovation to the routines of the organization. After this rollercoaster ride of interesting inputs we will take off into the evening and a relaxed chill-out in Berlin-Mitte. At the second day we dive into the practice of designing strategy stories. We invited two international key player to betray secrets: MetaDesign and UnternehmerTUM. What are their experiences with the day-to-day practice of strategy design? Additionally, we will bring in representatives of international corporations to discuss how working strategy with design elements can actually work. And last but not least there will be another session of »rapid prototyping«. And, and, and more information about the program and how to enroll are available at
