Dearfriends,

It has been a tremendous journey through Alpha Rotary Year 2022-23. With a deep sense of gratitude, I pen this letter to highlight our collective achievements as the Rotary Club of Mumbai Kandivli, and to remember our late fellow Rotarian, Haren Gandhi.

The loss of Haren, a beacon of light in our club, leaves a void that words fail to describe. His commitment to service and his passionate dedication to the ethos of Rotary continues to inspire us all. His life, lived in service, reinforces the meaning and joy of being a Rotarian.

Despite our loss, our collective resolve remains unbroken. We continue to embody Rotary's motto, 'Service Above Self.' Our ongoing projects reflect this commitment.

Our medical projects have been a testament to this enduring legacy. The Cancer Screening Camp at Ramakrishna Mission Welfare Centre, Sakwar, the donation of medicines to charitable trust hospitals and old age homes, and the Breast Cancer Screening Camp for Naval staff and their families are among the initiatives that have deeply touched the lives of many.

We have continued to invest in sustainable efforts through our Green Fingers Phase-II project. The donation of two electric vehicles to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a step towards reducing carbon footprint and promoting sustainable transportation, reflecting our commitment to the health of our planet.

Rotary Club of Bombay Kandivli

Acknowledging the vital need for proper sanitation facilities, we have made strides in renovating and constructing Toilet Blocks in Zilla Parishad schools of five villages in Wada taluka of Palghar District and the Manav Seva Old Age Home. The impact is already evident, improving health and well-being while boosting school attendance and enhancing living conditions for the elderly.

HappyServing...

Our endeavours have not just been limited to immediate relief and improvement. Looking towards long-term development, we have partnered with the Smartgaon Development Foundation to launch the Smartgaon Kunde Project - an ambitious multiyear flagship initiative to transform our adopted village, Kunde. Our work, in its varied scope and profound impact, was recognized and lauded during the Official Club Visit (OCV) by the District Governor. This recognition is a testament to the passion, dedication, and hard work of each and every member of our club.

th From conducting the 20 RCBK Interschool Painting Competition and empowering women through health initiatives to transforming villages, our journey has been deeply rewarding. Whether it be bringing smiles to children in Z P Schools, donating wheelchairs to Holy Family Hospital, or organizing the enlightening fellowship meeting at ISKCON, we have striven to serve our community in all possible ways. Our contributions to the Ramakrishna Mission Welfare Centre and our mental health initiatives, such as 'Navigating the Pathways of the Mind' and 'Harmonies for the Mind,' have allowed us to engage with pressing health concerns. In the spirit of inclusivity, the 'Youth Service Month' was celebrated with gusto, offering a platform to our young members to lead and serve.

Moreover, our visits to RAM Fashions Shoe Factory and the National Burn Center allowed us a chance to empathize and learn from diverse life experiences. The transformation we initiated with the vocational training we sparked at Govardhan Skill Centre, our fellowship meeting at ISKCON, and the Eye Checkup Camp conducted are further testaments to our dedication to the well-being and progress of our community and not to forget the high-spirited participation in the ROTAL Dance Competition reflected our zest for community bonding.

I am heartened by our club's ceaseless efforts and am convinced that we are more than a club; we are a family united by our commitment to serving society. The diversity of our projects underscores our understanding of the multifaceted nature of societal needs and our readiness to address them.

As I pen down this letter, my heart is filled with gratitude for every member, supporter, and volunteer who has joined us on this journey. Your dedication and service have been instrumental in transforming our vision into reality Let's continue to harness the power of Rotarian spirit and serve our community with an unwavering commitment.

Thank you, and let's keep making a difference.

Yours in Rotary service,

“We all have a limited time on this planet. The earlier we fail, the faster we will learn and improve.”

Dear

feowRotarians

It is with immense pleasure and gratitude that I pen down my experiences as the Secretary of the esteemed Rotary Club of Bombay Kandivli. The journey has been incredibly rewarding, enriching, and transformative. Before I took up this position, I was not sure about my ability to juggle the responsibilities and commitments that come along with such an influential role.

However, I soon discovered that the essence of leadership is not just about capabilities; it is about willingness - the readiness to learn, adapt, serve and influence positively. My journey as Secretary has been a canvas painted with numerous experiences - some challenging, some joyful, but all incredibly valuable. I've been privileged to work with an array of devoted individuals, collaborating to mobilize resources and extend help to those who need it the most.

From organizing educational initiatives to leading community upliftment programs, every project was a revelation of the impact a group of dedicated individuals can make.

Every meeting, every project, every success, and every challenge has helped me grow, not just as a Secretary but as an individual. The firsthand experience of witnessing the change we bring about in people's lives has been nothing short of extraordinary. It is this potential to create a positive difference that motivates me every day and makes the role so fulfilling. However, it is essential to remember that the true strength of the Rotary Club lies not in its Secretary, President, or any individual member, but in its collective capacity as a team.

We need strong leaders in every position, every committee, and every initiative. I write this letter as a heartfelt appeal to each one of you reading this - consider taking up leadership positions within our organization. In conclusion, my journey as Secretary has been one of the most significant learning experiences of my life. Looking forward to seeing more of you in leadership roles.

Yours in Rotary service,

02 09 10

As I sit down to write this letter, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment for all that we have achieved as a club in the past few months. The projects we have undertaken are not just a testament to our commitment towards community service, but also a reflection of our values as Rotarians.

From the Breast Cancer Screening Camp at INS Hamla to the Toilet Blocks Project at Manav Seva Old Age Home, our club has been making a tangible difference in the lives of people in our community. The dedication and hard work of our members is truly inspiring, and I am grateful to be a part of this incredible group of individuals.

It is heartening to see the impact that our projects are having on the ground. The smiles on the faces of the children at ZP schools in Wada as they received new playing equipment, and the gratitude of the inmates at Manav Seva Old Age Home as they stepped into their new toilet blocks, are a testament to the power of Rotary.

We must also take a moment to acknowledge the contributions of our generous donors and partners who have supported us in our endeavors. It is through their support that we are able to create meaningful change in our community.

I would like to encourage all of you to continue to contribute your time, skills, and resources towards our projects. Together, we can create a brighter future for those in need and build a stronger, more resilient community

DearFeowRotariansandReaders,

I, past President Rtn. Jyoti Gandhi, am immensely grateful and proud to share my

journey with Rotary. It has been filled with moments of incredible joy and heartwrenching challenges. I joined Rotary Club in 2015-16 and it has brought about lifechanging memories. As the President of RCBK during Vision Year 2020-21, it was a time beyond the ordinary that I will cherish forever. Today, I share my story with you, hoping to inspire others to join the Rotary family.

I joined Rotary because I have always been keen to serve. However, it was a specific incident involving a fellow Rotarian in our club, Gauri Shankar, that deeply touched me. When he met with an accident, our club rallied together to support his family during the prolonged and difficult times. Witnessing the immense compassion and solidarity displayed by the Rotary family changed my perspective entirely. I realized that Rotary was more than just a club; it was a community of like-minded individuals who believed in the power of friendship, compassion, and service.

One pivotal day stands out in my memory—the 10th of April 2021, the OCV Day (Official Club Visit) to our club. It was the most important day for Presidents, as the District Governor was present to witness our club's work. This crucial day validated all the hard work my club and I had put in, especially during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it was also a sharp turning point in my life. On that day, my husband Haren was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. From that moment, our lives took an unexpected turn. We embarked on a tumultuous journey filled with highs and lows, learning to appreciate every moment we had together, living one day at a time.

During this difficult phase, the senior members of my club generously asked me to prioritize my family and step down from my responsibilities. However, my commitment to serve surpassed the situation I was in, and I chose to continue serving, regardless of how tough it became to handle everything flawlessly. It was a great honour when our

club, RCBK, received the prestigious Platinum Award for the Vision year, covering all Avenues of service, for the first time in 20 years. The credit goes to the entire Vision Year Team and the RCBK Family who supported me throughout, contributing Rs. 37 lakhs to execute 112 projects that touched the lives of over 17,000 individuals.

Our extended family includes Rotarian families. They shared our problems, supported us, and became pillars. I am grateful to everyone who supported me during this difficult time. Your love and care for my family and me are invaluable. You helped me survive the storms.I extend my deepest gratitude to Rtn Afzal and Nusrat Khatri, Charter President Yusuf & Vinaya Lanewala, PE Rtn. Ravichandran and Maheshwari, Rtn Deepali Vora & Daughter Krishi, Rtn. Bandana, and Rtn. Mahendra Modi, who have shown us unparalleled love and support, being available for us 24x7. Their affection and care have provided solace and comfort during this difficult journey. Each of you has played a significant role in my life, and I am eternally grateful for your unwavering support. Words fall short to express my gratitude

I must also express my gratitude to the many other Rotarians who have been a great support throughout this journey. They visited us, brought sweets, chocolates, and ice cream, and shared valuable time, uplifting Haren's spirit. Thank you, dear friends. I know that you are just a call away.

Rotary taught me a lot. Unity and compassion help us overcome adversity. Rotary has helped me overcome life's challenges. I also learned the value of helping others. Rotary has helped me grow and make lasting connections with amazing people who share my values.

My story should inspire others to join Rotary and experience the transformative power of service and compassion. Rotary has enriched my life and given me purpose and belonging. I think we can change the world by working together.

Joining the Rotary Club has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life, and I hope that my story serves as a testament to the impact that this organization can have on both the communities we serve and our own lives.

I invite you to join Rotary, one of the best decisions of my life. Help create a world of love, compassion, and service. With heartfelt gratitude.

We deeply regret to inform you that Haren, the beloved husband of Rtn. Jyoti Gandhi, th passed away on the 14 of May. Our thoughts and condolences are with Jyoti and her family during this difficult time. May Haren's memory be a guiding light for us all.

Remembering

HarenGandhi A True Rotarian

ABeaconofLight Extinguished

"In the endless cycle of existence, some souls are like stars, guiding us through the darkness. Haren Gandhi was one such star – a beacon of hope, warmth, and endless inspiration.”

Haren had a way of connecting with people that was truly unique. His infectious laugh would fill the room, his sense of humor providing an undercurrent of joy even in the most serious discussions. He was not just a Rotarian or a marathoner. He was a beacon of positivity, a bundle of energy, and a testament to the indomitable human spirit.

Haren's legacy is not one of sorrow but of inspiration. His life was a marathon of resilience and determination, each mile reflecting his unfailing commitment to service above self. His philanthropy was not mere charity; it was an expression of his deeply ingrained belief in the power of empathy and compassion.

As we navigate through this ocean of sorrow, let us hold onto the beacon that Haren was. Let us remember him not in grief but in gratitude for having known a soul so vibrant and passionate. As we honor his memory, let us strive to emulate his values, his indomitable spirit, his unwavering commitment to service, and above all, his unfading optimism.

Haren Gandhi may no longer be with us in body, but his spirit, his legacy, and the footprints he left in the sands of time continue to inspire and guide us. To a life beautifully lived and a soul eternally loved, Haren, you will forever be missed.

Thank you for showing us the light, thank you for being you.

"For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?" - Kahlil Gibran.

In loving memory of Haren Gandhi - a Rotarian, a marathoner, a philanthropist, a mentor, a guide, and a dear friend.

EmbracingTheTrueMeaningof BeingaRotarian

The Joy of Service...

As Rotarians, we often hear the phrase "Service Above Self" being thrown around. But what does it really mean to be a Rotarian? Let me break it down for you in a simplified yet impactful way - being a Rotarian is like being a superhero, but with a lot more meetings.

Think about it. Just like a superhero, a Rotarian is someone who is dedicated to making their community a better place. They have a strong moral compass, and they're not afraid to take action when they see something that needs fixing. And, of course, they wear capes... okay, maybe not capes, but you get the idea.

But being a Rotarian isn't all fun and games. It's a serious commitment to helping others, and it requires a lot of hard work and dedication. It means attending meetings, fundraising, organizing events, and sometimes even getting your hands dirty in service projects.

But the beauty of being a Rotarian is that you never have to do it alone. You have a whole community of like-minded individuals who are just as passionate about making a difference as you are. And when you work together, the impact you can make is truly incredible. So, if you ever feel overwhelmed by the commitments of being a Rotarian, just rememberyou're a superhero with a support team. And, as with any superhero team, there's always room for a bit of humor and fun.

If everyone shines a little light in the darkness, the combination of shining lights will soon overcome the darkness. Let your light shine!

Want to develop a positive outlook?

Hang out with positive people. Rotarians know that positivity is positively contagious.

Navigatingthe PathwaysoftheMind EarlyDiagnosisof Dementiaand Prevention Strategies

Dementia – a word that conjures images of memory loss and declining cognitive functions – is a reality for many. It's a journey shrouded in fog, unclear and challenging to navigate. As our population ages, the number of dementia cases is projected to rise dramatically. The good news, however, is that we're making significant strides in our understanding of this complex condition, particularly in terms of early diagnosis and prevention strategies.

Diagnosis at the early stages of dementia can be tricky. Why? Because the signs are often subtle and can be easily mistaken for normal age-related changes. The key, therefore, lies in staying vigilant for persistent changes, such as difficulty with everyday tasks, confusion over time and place, and significant changes in mood and personality.

If you or a loved one exhibit any of these symptoms, a visit to the doctor is highly recommended. It's crucial to remember that early diagnosis doesn't necessarily spell doom; rather, it provides an opportunity to explore treatment options that can slow the progression and maintain the quality of life for as long as possible.

Preventive Measures: Can We Hold Dementia at Bay?

There's an old saying that prevention is better than cure, and it rings especially true in the case of dementia. While there's no definitive way to prevent it, certain lifestyle changes can lower the risk and keep our cognitive reserves in good shape.

DietaryAdjustments

An emerging body of research suggests that what we eat can play a significant role in preventing or delaying the onset of dementia. The Mediterranean diet – rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, olive oil, and fish – is associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline. This diet is high in antioxidants that protect against cellular damage and inflammation, contributing to brain health.

Green tea and berries, filled with powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, may also play a role in cognitive health. The evidence isn't just in the cup or the bowl but in scientific studies that suggest a positive correlation between these dietary habits and improved cognitive function.

YogaAsanas

While a comprehensive exercise routine is vital, yoga stands out due to its unique blend of physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation. Yoga fosters not only physical strength and flexibility but also mental clarity and calmness.

Here are three yoga asanas that have been found to be beneficial in enhancing cognitive functions:

1. Tree Pose (Vrikshasana): This pose improves balance, stability, and poise, which are often compromised in individuals with dementia. It also aids in concentration and calmness.

2. Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): This pose energizes the body, reduces stress and anxiety, and aids in relieving the symptoms of depression.

3. Corpse Pose (Savasana): This restorative pose, typically performed at the end of a yoga session, helps in relaxing the body and mind, thus reducing stress and tension.

Remember, it's always wise to consult with a professional yoga instructor to ensure proper technique and safety.

The battle against dementia is indeed a challenging one, but with early diagnosis and proactive strategies like dietary changes and yoga, we can journey through the fog with hope. Understanding is our map, resilience our compass, and preventative care our trusted guide. In the labyrinth of the mind, these tools can help us find our way.

THE PowerofYouth

CelebratingYouthServiceMonththisMay

When we think of May, we often think of spring in full bloom, or Mother's Day, or even the anticipation of summer. However, there's another noteworthy event that calls for our attention in May - Youth Service Month. It's a time to celebrate the power of young people to transform our communities and our world. This month provides us with a unique opportunity to acknowledge, encourage, and support youth as they serve their communities.

JALANCOLLEGE

TheImpoanceofYouthService

Youth service plays a vital role in shaping our world. By getting involved in their communities, young people develop crucial skills, gain valuable experiences, and make lasting connections. More importantly, they create positive change. They demonstrate that age is no barrier to making a difference.

Young people bring a fresh perspective, innovative ideas, and abundant energy to the problems facing our world. Whether they're tackling climate change, fighting against social inequality, or addressing mental health stigma, the youth hold the keys to our future.

ThePowerofYouthinAction

Youth Service Month is an ideal time to celebrate the many ways that young people contribute to their communities. Across the globe, young people are creating

solutions to local problems, starting non-profits, volunteering in existing organizations, and making their voices heard on matters that are important to them.

Their actions range from organizing fundraisers for local charities to coordinating community cleanup events. Some are leveraging technology to create innovative solutions to societal problems, while others are advocating for policy changes on issues close to their hearts.

FosteringYouthEngagement

As a society, our role is to encourage, support, and celebrate our young people's efforts. Here are a few ways we can do that:

Encourage Volunteering: Encourage young people to volunteer for causes that resonate with them. It could be a local non-profit, a national initiative, or even a global movement. The act of service not only impacts the community positively but also fosters growth in the individual.

Foster Leadership Skills: Provide opportunities for young people to take on leadership roles. This could be within schools, local clubs, or community groups. Leadership roles will help them develop important skills such as communication, problem-solving, and team management.

Celebrate and Acknowledge Their Contributions: Recognition goes a long way in motivating continued service. Celebrate the efforts of young people in your community - this can be through social media shout-outs, local newspaper features, or community awards.

OurCollectiveRole

Youth Service Month is a powerful reminder of the difference young people can make in our communities. It's our collective responsibility to ensure that their voices are heard, their efforts are recognized, and their passion for change is continually nurtured.

This May, as we celebrate Youth Service Month, let's stand by our young change makers, fuel their dreams, and harness their potential for creating a better world. For it's in their dreams and actions that the future of our society unfolds.

The vibrant morning of May 6 held a special promise for the members of the Rotary Club of Bombay Kandivli (RCBK). Embarking from Thakur Village, fuelled by breakfast delights on route at an Airoli restaurant, we prepared ourselves for an enlightening journey.

Soles withSouls:Unraveling the Proces at RAM Fashions ShoeFactory

As we arrived at the RAM Fashions Shoe Factory, a warm welcome awaited us from Mr. Bhasin, the factory's owner and past President of the Rotary Club of Chandivali. Our morning took on a new dimension as we were introduced to the captivating universe of shoemaking.

The heart of our visit was a special presentation on the GreenSole project, a commendable initiative that transforms discarded footwear into comfortable shoes for school children. As we toured the factory, we witnessed the birth of shoes that grace the shelves of globally renowned brands like Levis and Aldo. This immersive experience underscored the marriage of sustainability and enterprise, making us appreciate the footprints we leave behind, quite literally.

TheBeaconofHealing:TheNationalBurnCenter

Our next stop was the National Burn Center at Airoli, Asia's only hospital dedicated to treating burn patients and a pioneer in skin donation. This visit was a poignant exploration of healing, empathy, and resilience.

We were introduced to the center's significant work through an informative session on fire prevention and a presentation on the skin donation process. Walking through the center, we witnessed the stages of burn treatment and saw the operations of the Skin Bank. These powerful insights underscored the vital role of skin donation in accelerating healing and reducing infection risks for burn victims.

Highlighting our visit was a meeting with Dr. Keswani, the center's founder. A figure well-respected in our club's history, he shared candid insights and emphasized the importance of conducting fire prevention sessions and promoting skin donation within schools and colleges. His words rang true in our hearts, a call to action that our club pledged to carry forward.

As we concluded our enlightening journey, we extended our heartfelt thanks to PP Rtn Samir Parikh for his pivotal role in initiating and coordinating these visits. The experiences of the day not only enriched us but also bonded us closer as a community committed to service.

As we reflect on this special day, we send our appreciation to every participant who made the trip memorable. Each step we took was a stride towards deepening our understanding, widening our horizons, and strengthening our commitment to service. After all, it's not just about the footprints we leave, but also the paths we tread and the journeys we share.

And thus, we step into the future of RCBK, our hearts echoing the ethos of service and th our minds illuminated by the experiences that May 6 bestowed upon us. Here's to many more shared journeys of enlightenment and empathy.
