Dear Fellow Arts Leader, The performing arts field is sometimes contradictory. Our missions involve providing multifaceted experiences that create a shared human experience of exploration and inspiration. We seek to promote thriving creativity in our artists. We take pride in being members of a field that, at its best, is inclusive and encouraging to young arts leaders. That said, our industry can be insular, homogeneous, closed off to creativity, and inflexible. We bemoan the lack of young administrators seeking out leadership roles. We wonder why young audiences feel disconnected. We witness many artists failing to find their way and leaving the field entirely. Lately, we have become keenly aware of the lack of diversity within our institutions, both demographically and in terms of our thinking. Having worked with many organizations through their cultural shifts, we know how shameful it can feel to realize that one’s organizational culture is not optimal, or even toxic. We can all struggle to confront the reality that we don’t always embody the values we espouse. Nearly eight years ago, we created Cadenza Artists and our consulting company, iCadenza, with a bold vision of inhabiting an arts ecosphere that promotes adventurous collaboration, resulting in groundbreaking and impactful new work. We wanted to contribute positivity, an innovative spirit, and best practices from other industries to foster the growth and long-term sustainability of our beloved field. With many of our clients, we incorporate a methodology called Time To Think by Nancy Kline, which radically questions how the environment we create within our organizations impacts the thinking of everyone on the team, including ourselves. Kline argues that “the mind works best in the presence of reality. Reality is diverse. Homogeneity is a thinking inhibitor.” It’s no wonder that we are struggling to think outside of the boxes that we’ve built around our perspectives. And yet, we are ultimately responsible for infusing creativity into the hearts and minds of our communities through the arts. We firmly believe that there has never been a better time for the arts. The future holds immense opportunity for arts leaders from all corners of the field. The artists that we proudly represent remind us of this every day, inspiring us to steadfastly maintain this mindset, through our own vicissitudes. If we can reframe our approach, aim to empower one another, commit to collaboration, and show up with honesty and authenticity, we will all inhabit a more dynamic, joyous, and thriving field. • Composer Julia Adolphe was commissioned to write a piece for the Los Angeles Philharmonic for their centennial season, with Gustavo Dudamel conducting. She also received the ASCAP Foundation 2017 Morton Gould Young Composer Award and was named Musical America’s Artist of the Month (December). • Conductor Jeffrey Schindler traveled the globe to conduct live concerts of Hollywood blockbuster films including the first three Harry Potter films (over 50 performances!), Amadeus, and others, with top orchestras such as Sydney Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, and San Diego Symphony. • Pianist Vanessa Perez is touring the world with the groundbreaking project Bill Murray, Jan Vogler and Friends: New Worlds, with performances at the Napa Valley Festival, Royal Conservatory of Music’s Gala, and more. • Pianist Lara Downes’ 2017 album ‘America Again’ debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard classical charts. Her newest album ‘For Lenny’ (Leonard Bernstein) was released in Feb 2018 on Sony Classical with rave reviews, and Yamaha Artist Services recently announced that Lara Downes joined the company’s impressive roster of artists. • The Menuhin Duo’s newest album ‘The Voice of Rebellion’ released in early June worldwide on the Genuin Classics label. The piano duo’s album features music composed by Jeremy Menuhin, a former student of Nadia Boulanger. The release includes chamber works by Brahms that Jeremy has transformed, as well as original repertoire.

• Conspirare’s Considering Matthew Shepard, in partnership with KLRU, received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for a television special (which will air on PBS in 2018).

• Germán López made his debut at the Ellnora Guitar Festival, and received an offer to record an album with eight-time GRAMMY winner, and Latin Grammy “Producer of the Year”, Gregg Field.

• Pianist Steven Lin was featured as the pianist in MARY SHELLEY’S FRANKENSTEIN, a show by the Ensemble for the Romantic Century. • In fall 2017, conductor Grant Gershon conducted the debut performances of GIRLS OF THE GOLDEN WEST, John Adams’ new opera (directed by Peter Sellars), at San Francisco Opera. • Multi-media artist, Kaki King premiered her projection-mapping guitar performance ‘The Neck Is The Bridge To The Body’ and joined an artistled panel discussion on unlocking creative blocks at the Abelton Loop Festival in Germany in fall, 2017. Bringing together artists, technologists, educators and other creative thinkers, Loop is an exploration of what it is to make music today and what it could be tomorrow.

• Violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins was highlighted in the NY Times as a New York Today “New Yorker of the Year”. • Soprano Hila Plitmann made a stellar debut in WAR of the WORLDS at the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

JEFFREY SCHINDLER Conductor Conductor Jeffrey Schindler enjoys a dynamic international career that takes him from concert podiums around the world to the scoring stages of Hollywood and London. Known as a versatile conductor, Mr. Schindler has conducted world-renowned orchestras across the globe including the London Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, and Nashville Symphony, amongst others.

You started out as a harpsichordist, specializing in early music. What are the biggest dissimilarities between that and film music? Some differences are fairly obvious. One is absolute music for active listening, and the other is in the service of a moving image! However, early musicians are rigorously trained in a sensitivity to style and I think this aspect of my training has been of particular value. In a genre frequently criticized for the sameness of its product, I am constantly working to discover and reveal the composers’ unique and individual voice.

Mr. Schindler is one of the only conductors leading concerts of live orchestra to film who has conducted A-list Hollywood motion pictures in the original studio recordings including X-men: Apocalypse, X-men: Days of Future Past, Jack the Giant Slayer, Astroboy, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Four Christmases, Bernard and Doris, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and the most successful documentary of all time: the AcademyAward winning March of the Penguins. Mr. Schindler’s award-winning artistry melds imaginative and illuminating performances with expressive and powerful technique, impeccable scholarship, and vibrant energy.

Tell me about your experiences with a movie’s scoring vs. conducting movies with orchestra? The fundamental difference is that the intent on the scoring stage is the “final document”: the recording! On the concert stage, particularly with live orchestra to film, it’s a show: there are no retakes and no pauses. Of course, in both cases, I endeavor to bring a “performance” to the recording or concert, so that there is drama, excitement and poetry to the music.

Outside of your professional accomplishments, you also have mentored many developing conductors. What is some advice that you give to emerging conductors? I have three pieces of advice. First, be the best you can be. Always strive for the highest personal standard artistically, musically, technically and intellectually. Second, be confident. If a conductor is on the podium then s/he should get on with the job at hand, secure in the knowledge that they belong there. Three, shut up. Knowledge is power, and the best way to accumulate it is to keep one’s eyes open and one’s mouth closed. How do you approach working with a new orchestra for the first time?

You choose to work with Cadenza Artists for a reason, so what makes Cadenza such a unique partner for you?

With compressed rehearsal and performance schedules, it’s important to establish an effective and collegial working relationship as soon as possible. I usually select one of the more challenging sections of the music before us, and go right to work. Within a few minutes, the orchestra and I will have established a rapport: I will know in short order how efficaciously they will put things together (usually very quickly), and they will collectively perceive that I know the music. Moreover, I try to be as light-hearted and fun as possible; at this point in my career, I find that I prefer to make music with musicians, rather than adopting a “maestro” attitude.

Cadenza Artists’ philosophy is to help every artist realize not just the goals they wish to achieve, but to ascend to heights of success and fulfillment they could never imagine! I have found this to be revelatory and extraordinarily impactful.

Over the last year alone, Jeffrey Schindler has appeared with dozens of orchestras, including Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House, Seattle Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, and Charlotte Symphony, along with many others. Upcoming engagements include the Baltimore Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, and Seattle Symphony. He has conducted film with live orchestra programs for a number of films, including the Harry Potter films, Amadeus, It’s A Wonderful Life, and March of the Penguins, and is looking forward to his first Star Wars performances coming soon. In summer 2018, he will be conducting his 100th performance of Harry Potter with live orchestra.

You’ve been recognized as a generous and kind collaborator. How do you balance your leadership roles? Thank you! Part of my personal mission statement is to be someone who solves problems, not someone who creates them. Leaders should encourage the best possible performance from the most qualified person they can find. And here’s the best part of that as a conductor: I already have the most qualified people right in front of me! In addition, I have found true friends among many members of

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: Julia Adolphe - A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of Tears Julia Adolphe’s new comic opera entitled A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of Tears based on the novel by Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer with libretto by Stephanie Fleischmann is currently seeking co-commissioners. A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of Tears is a wonderfully loopy fairytale about a young royal doomed to make everyone

around her laugh so hard that nothing gets done in her presence. The story is whimsical, enthralling, and inspiring - all characteristics Adolphe’s compositions are known for. A particularly exciting element about this work is that it is by a female composer, with a female librettist: Stephanie Fleischmann.

Two development partners - National Sawdust in New York City and Boston Court Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles - have already come onboard to support the creation of the work through workshopping and other creative support. In addition, GRAMMY award-winning soprano Hila Plitmann has agreed to join the premiere cast.
