THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS Interview with Our company, Lara & Ollie, designs and sells silicone teething necklaces and bangles. Our aim is to break the convention of stereotypical teething jewellery with shapes, designs and colours that enable mums to accessorise an everyday jeans and t-shirt combo and feel like they’ve made an effort. What’s clever is that the jewellery is safe for babies to chew, fiddle with and enjoy too.

What made you come up with your business idea? We met through our NCT class in January 2014, just before we had our kids - who happen to be called Lara and Ollie! We both love jewellery and accessories but quickly realised when we became mums that we couldn’t wear it unless we were away from the kids; not only was it potentially pretty dangerous, we didn’t want anything broken. Having made jewellery for fun a few years back we loved the concept of teething necklaces but couldn’t find much we liked, so we sourced some beads and made a few. We had amazing feedback from friends and mums we were getting to know locally, all of whom wanted to know where they could buy them. So we thought why not give it a go and here we are.

What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them? As with any new business, we’ve had many challenges to overcome, some small and simple, others big and complicated! But perhaps the biggest (ongoing) challenge is juggling full time parenthood with running our own business. Mainly because there just aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything. The kids are great buddies which means they spend a lot of time together playing whilst we talk shop, but we’re hugely ambitious and sometimes we just have to prioritise, when really we want to do everything immediately. We’re not very patient!

© Emily Gray Photography

How old were your children when you started your business and is it hard to juggle a business and a family? Lara and Ollie had just turned 1 when we officially launched. However we had spent the previous 7 months working on the idea. We were, and still are, full time mums so the process arguably took a little bit longer, Since launching we’ve had minimal childcare so we tended just to work when the kids slept. The minute they were in bed, we were working. But of course throughout the day we were taking calls, on email and social media – we became masters of pushing a buggy whilst emailing / texting / posting! Lara and Ollie have now just started nursery school which gives us a bit more time to work. And Anna’s baby no2 Charlie is 1 and he still sleeps in the day thankfully!! sle

What is the best thing about running your own business? Without a doubt it’s the flexibility it gives you, particularly when you’re a full time mum. Whilst we’re hugely ambitious for the business, we’ve always said that our kids and families must come first and ultimately you really do get out what you put in! Where we’re also lucky is that we’ve got each other! Firstly, being able to go on holiday and not worry or work… genuinely this is a huge thing as there’s almost always one of us here to keep things going. It’s also great to be able to discuss and brainstorm things together, having someone to bounce ideas off, particularly when we both have different views. One of us will often remember something the other had forgotten and if one of us is feeling tired and is worrying about something, invariably the other is feeling good and positive - so there’s usually a good balance. Throughout my first pregnancy I struggled to find any maternity clothes that I liked and couldn’t believe how expensive maternity clothes were – especially as you are only able to wear them for a few months! HEALTH

4 5 3 & 1 5 0 $ 0 $ $ 6 4 Strepelle – why would you not use this test? Strepelle is a home-to-laboratory test for Group B Streptococcus (Group B Strep or GBS). Up to one in five of all pregnant women will be carriers of Group B Strep in the birth canal and the bacterium can be passed during labour to their baby. One in five newborns who are infected with Group B Strep suffer from serious, life-changing illnesses such as meningitis, septicaemia or pneumonia, which can have life-long effects such as brain damage, hearing loss and sight loss. One in ten babies with the dam infection will die from it. In the UK 70 babies a year die from Group B Strep infection The only way of knowing if a pregnant woman is carrying the bacterium is by having a laboratory test. The highly accurate Strepelle test (www.strepelle.com) will determine whether the pregnant woman is carrying the bacterium. In the UK, pregnant women are not routinely offered testing for group B Strep by the NHS unlike in many other developed countries. The good news is that with Strepelle, the very simple sample-to-laboratory test, the bacterium will be identified during pregnancy allowing the woman to be treated with antibiotics during labour, thus protecting the baby from the risk of infection. Strepelle was created in partnership with midwives and was launched at the recent Baby Show in London to great acclaim. It was designed to make laboratory testing for GBS more available and convenient, save babies lives, and prevent heart-breaking devastation in families. The accurate and easy to use test is for use from 35 weeks pregnant. The home-to-laboratory test can

be purchased on-line or in store for £39.99 and contains everything that is needed to provide a sample to the laboratory; instructions, two swabs and a pre-paid envelope; the results will arrive within 3 days of receipt of the sample, either by letter, text, or email (whichever is best for the receiver). If a woman is a carrier, all she needs to do is let her doctor ormidwife know, and antibiotics will be administered intravenously during labour. Brendan Farrell, CEO of Strepelle, said: “The launch of Strepelle Br will significantly reduce the many risks associated with Group B Strep in newborn babies across the UK. Once GBS is detected it will enable healthcare professionals to tailor a care plan to expectant mothers, ensuring that the correct treatment is administered during labour which will prevent babies from becoming exposed to the potentially harmful bacterium.” HiberGene Diagnostics, is the company who have pioneered Strepelle and who support the NHS with the highest level of professional GBS tests. Strepelle is the most accurate Group B Streptococcus test currently on the market and designed specifically to detect Group B strep. Highly sensitive, Strepelle utilises the gold standard method of testing, Enriched Culture Medium (ECM). Research has shown that when the ECM test is performed within 5 weeks of delivery it can give a high prediction whether or not GBS will be present at delivery or not. It is a home to laboratory test, which means that you are getting access to the accuracy and reliability of a professional test from the convenience of your own home. Recommended from 35 weeks of pregnancy. For more information visit: www.strepelle.com 37

How to Manage Anxiety and Stress around Childbirth - By Milli Hill, Pregnancy and Birth Expert from the Baby Show and Founder of the Positive Birth Movement

Your mindset during labour is really important. The main hormone of birth is called oxytocin, and you literally can’t give birth without it! However, it’s also known as the ‘shy hormone’, because we produce it best when we are in warm, cosy, dimly-lit environments, without unwanted interruptions. The fight or flight hormone, adrenaline, which we produce in stressful situations, inhibits the production of oxytocin. So every birthing woman and her partner need to know about this wonderful hormone and how to create the optimal environment for it’s production! It’s a good idea to ask your midwives during your routine antenatal appointments, if there are staff shortages or other issues in your area which may mean you don’t get the birthsetting of your choice (be this home, MLU or a particular hospital). If a particular setting isreally important to you, it’s helpful to convey this to them and see if they can do anything extra to make this possible. However, knowing in advance that there is a chance that you may not be able to birth in your first choice of location will help in terms of not causing a last minute shock or panic and allowing you to think through every eventuality.

It’s also important to remember that, if you do have to travel to a different birth place, and this causes your labour to slow down or stall, that this is a perfectly normal response. Your body is designed to hold off giving birth if it doesn’t feel safe this is intelligent design! So - what you need to do is accept your bodies response, don’t panic, get to your new destination and almost ‘start again’. Turn your attention away from adrenaline and back to oxytocin, and think about ways that you can enhance your oxytocin production again. The role of the partner is also key to ensuring everything remains as calm as possible. In The Positive Birth Book I suggest partners take on the role of ‘Guardians of Oxytocin’ - they often want a job or something to be in charge of and this is the most important job of all (apart from giving birth, obviously!) Helping create a birth environment that is optimal for oxytocin production - making sure those who come in talk in low voices, keeping the lights dim, being calm and loving around their partner, and not asking questions or ‘chit chatting’ - this and more will all be vitally helpful. The Baby Show returns to London ExCeL 2nd – 4th March 2018. For more information visit www.thebabyshow.co.uk

GUMS

How Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Can Affect Your Gums? The majority of pregnant and breastfeeding women have swollen, red, tender, sore gums that may also bleed when they brush or floss their teeth. This gum inflammation is known as pregnancy gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease. Pregnancy gingivitis is partly caused by hormonal changes that make their gums more sensitive to bacteria in plaque. Good oral hygiene and regular visits to a dental hygienist for cleaning may help to avoid it. Many pregnant women suffer with morning sickness, however may not realise the effect this has on their oral health. Acid from the stomach is strong enough to dissolve teeth and contribute to dental erosion and tooth decay. Some pregnant women also have an intolerance to strong flavours. Switch to a mild flavoured toothpaste that is also gentle on tooth enamel and gums.

SPLAT Special MAGNOLIA is a wonderful toothpaste full of luscious ingredients which include Magnolia Root, Rosemary, Papaya, Golden Pearl Powder, Neem Flower extract, Aloe Vera and Holy Basil Leaves. This gentle toothpaste is 98% natural, delicately whitens teeth and is ideal for sensitive teeth. Magnolia Root extract protects the teeth from cariogenic bacteria and plaque, Rosemary essential oil (a natural preservative) which when combined with stevia extract prevents oral inflammation and maintains healthy gums, making it an ideal product for expecting and breastfeeding mothers. This toothpaste recently won a Beauty Shortlist Award in their Mama and Baby category. Available in store at Harrods Pharmacy and independents nationwide. Pilates in pregnancy Interview with Jade Pilates

Jade trained as a professional dancer and took her first Pilates classes in 1997. For over twenty years Jade has immersed herself in all things Pilates, somatic movement and well-being. Her career has been spent teaching both mat and equipment based Pilates and for many years she was the Manager of Laban Pilates, the largest Pilates studio in the UK and led a team of sixteen elite Pilates Pi teachers. Jade has taught professional dancers, worked alongside physiotherapists and osteopaths, was Head of Pilates on the world class BA(HONS) Dance programme at Trinity Laban and has been an examiner for Pilates teacher training programmes at Laban and the University of East London. In 2015 Jade opened her own, purpose built studio at home in Bromley BR2. The studio is in a beautiful, light and airy garden building, fully equipped with Reformer, Cadillac, Arc barrel, Wunda chair and small apparatus. The team at Jadepilates offer private, duet and shared equipment based Pilates, mat work, pre and post natal Pilates, Yoga, Feldenkrais, Mindfulness and various therapies including massage. Jadepilates is open for classes Monday to Friday during the day and evening. Therapeutic practices, workshops and teacher training are held on weekends. How is what you teach unique from other forms and of exercise? The very special and unique part of the Pilates we offer is the equipment. It totally transforms the practice. Mat and equipment training is as a complete system, and although you can do one without the other it is illuminating when you experience the many layers of learning both. Our equipment based sessions are personalised, meaning that we tailor the practice to the needs and objectives of the individual. Even in a shared session each person has their own programme and is taught with consideration for how they are in that moment. It is usual to find in one session people of different ages and abilities, those with pain and or injury, those training for athletic events, pre and post natal women, people with neurological disorders, migraine, hypermobility, people looking for a challenging workout or those wanting to relax and breathe after a busy day. The Pilates approach centres around the person. Is it safe to exercise during pregnancy and what do you recommend? The short answer is yes, pregnancy is not a medical problem. Exercise is movement and movement is life. Pregnant women will be moving and 'exercising' anyway so to do so in a controlled, guided environment is supportive and

helpful. Saying that, some pregnancies can have associated health risks and we always ask women to inform their GPs of their intention to start Pilates and keep records of GP's and or Midwives' names and numbers. I recommend equipment based Pilates for women during pregnancy. The repertoire is infinite, so no matter how a woman is feeling there is something they can do and enjoy. There is a huge variety of seated, side lying and standing exercises, all supported by spring resistance and props. Balance equipment helps with a changing centre of gravity and assists good posture and we have a variety of therapy balls to ease aching joints. How can this help me during my pregnancy and birth? It is vital to stay mobile during your pregnancy and Pilates can assist you with this safely. Keeping the body strong takes on a new focus as your centre changes so you will need a new approach to exercise. Your legs and hips will be carrying more weight than before and efficient skeletal alignment and muscular activation is key. Pelvic health is essential and Pilates can help with a pelvic floor that be buoyant during pregnancy, relaxed during birth and responsive afterwards. Key to Pilates is the coordination of movement and breathing. Your ability to connect with your breath will be one of your biggest tools during labour How soon after the birth of my baby can I start to exercise again? This depends on what you mean by exercise. You can start gentle breathing and mobilisation straight away as part of your recovery after birth. Even walking and sitting can be practiced mindfully using the postural skills you have learnt in Pilates. This goes a long way to promoting healing and can help you and your baby relax in to your new way of life. Returning to the studio is any time after your six week check for a vaginal delivery and twelve weeks after a caesarean. This is the standard for any exercise. Remember that there is no rush and you are considered to be in a post natal phase for a year after birth. The most important advice I can give post natal women is to be kind. Rest, relax, heal and the toning and conditioning with come. You are remarkable and deserve to be celebrated. It is an honour to be part of your life at this time.

Puddle Ducks was founded in 2001 when two friends, Tracy Townend and Jo Stone, were finding it difficult to find a pool or classes to take their new babies swimming. As keen swimmers themselves, they knew the benefits of learning to swim and also saw the potential that the aquatic environment offered for Mums and tiny babies. Puddle Ducks now teach babies and children from birth to ten years. Swimming with your baby is an intensely nurturing experience, offering plenty of eye and skin contact. It can also be a social time – especially in baby swimming classes. Only in the water can a baby move completely freely and baby swimming classes provide a complete physical work-out: strengthening your baby's heart, lungs and respiratory system. This gives “swimming babies” the opportunity to develop crucial higher brain functions, core muscle development and co-ordination far earlier than they would otherwise be able to. Regular swimming often improves eating and sleeping patterns – great news for parents! But most importantly of all, baby swimming should instil a love of water for the rest of your child’s life. In the UK, at least 50 children drown each year and drowning is the third most common cause of death in children under 16. Yet still, 200,000 children leave primary school each year without basic skills needed to survive in the water! Toddlers and pre-schoolers who have swum since birth need a more progressive class than children of a similar age who have not been in the water regularly. The older a child is when they first enter a swimming pool, the bigger the ordeal it can become for them. Puddle Ducks has a carefully designed programme which will enable any child to discover the joys of playing and swimming in the water in a fun, but safe, environment. Rhian Lindley, a customer says “I took my eldest daughter, Isabelle to Puddle Ducks from age 8 weeks to about 15 months, but had to stop when my twins, Daniel and Abigail, arrived. At three, I thought Isabelle needed to go to lessons again and I tried another provider – partly because it was less expensive. It was a disaster – she hated swimming and disliked the teachers. On a family holiday I slipped into a swimming pool holding Daniel and we really hurt ourselves – from that day Daniel decided he hated the water! Finally, I decided to go back to Puddle Ducks with all three children. Now Isabelle is going to Puddle Ducks Swim Academy and within four weeks of lessons is swimming across the pool unaided (very proud moment) – she LOVES swimming lessons. Daniel, week 1

was unsure but by the end of the lesson he was laughing and splashing – week 3 he is jumping in and asking to go swimming all the time. Abigail loves it too. I am over the moon, Puddle Ducks is without a doubt the best swimming experience we have had as a family and this is a credit to the wonderful teachers and the innovative, fun swimming programme. You get what you pay for and I won’t be going an anywhere else for my children’s swimming lessons” All Puddle Ducks baby and pre-school classes are shaped by the songs and rhymes we use. Music is a universal language which provides enjoyment and enrichment. When listening to songs and rhymes, babies and toddlers have been shown to be more attentive and respond more positively. At Puddle Ducks, children learn water safety skills from their first lesson, through floating, turning and swimming skills. At least one of our parents has appreciated this when her little girl of two fell into a canal: "It was very scary. She veered off the towpath and fell in. She sank so I couldn't see her. However, after a few seconds she had kicked to the surface and I was be able to get her out. She was crying with shock but not spluttering or coughing at all! We are only talking a matter of seconds but without Puddle Ducks classes it could have been very different. I am Pu just so pleased we have been coming to you!” Swimming is a life skill that could one day save your child’s life. In a safe environment, the swimming pool can be the best playground for the entire family and instil a love of water and exercise that will stay with your child for life. MUMPRENEUR Interview with Charlotte Rampling (Mrs Flying Colours Pottery) So tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a mumpreneur, where did it all start for you? For as long as I can remember I wanted to teach – I’m the fourth generation of teachers, so I think it was in my genes. I qualified in 2002 and spent many happy years at a local primary school, but two years in my husband and I had a moment of reflection whilst chatting over coffee and I decided to reduce my teaching hours and invest in our very own pottery studio, opening a shop in the heart of Brasted village in Kent. My first son was born in 2006, working for myself meant I had very little by way of maternity leave, so my son used to nap in the back of the shop while I painted and glazed around his carrycot. Our son spent the first year of his lilife with me at the pottery studio, however, once he found his feet we had to reconsider our business model; shelves full of ceramics were not the most ideal environment for a toddler! We continued to run the pottery business as a mobile business as we realised that for many new mums (wanting precious baby footprint keepsakes) a home visit was more desirable than making the effort to come out to the shop. I also maintained some part time hours as a teacher, eventually working my way up to Deputy-head teacher. The pottery business grew and in April last year I gave up my fixed salary and now work solely as ‘Mrs Flying Colours Pottery’. Every week is varied; baby footprints, children’s parties, school workshops, preparing takeaway kits, corporate team building events, kit hen parties… and when I’m not running an event I can be found either in my workshop glazing, firing, wrapping or out on the road delivering the finished masterpieces to my customers. What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them? Working for yourself is incredibly satisfying but it is difficult to know when to stop. Finding the right work life balance takes some dedication and self-control. I have realised the importance of investing in myself – guilt free. I now aim to ensure that my week consists of a few non-work activities I enjoy. For me this includes yoga, singing and socialising with friends. What is the best thing about running your own business? There is definitely a sense of freedom. It has enabled me to connect with some really inspirational local business women and having more flexibility has enabled me to give some of my time back to helping others. I have volunteered for Breast Cancer Care and more recently, I took part in a research study at Kings College Hospital looking into the biological basis of postnatal depression; although I have never experienced postnatal depression both of these causes are very close to my heart. What would you say was the single most influential factor in your business’ success? My parents. Although they weren’t in business, they were both teachers, I was brought up with solid values, and they always encouraged me; I don’t fear failure and am confident to take risks. A phrase I like to remind myself of is by a young Australian poet, Erin Hanson, who writes ‘What if I fall? But my darling, what if you fly?’ My parents also gave me a strong work ethic, and to understand the value of money. I have three siblings, and both my parents

worked full time. My brother has significant learning difficulties, and my Mum was only able to take ten weeks maternity leave after I was born. This shaped me to be the person I am today: resilient, determined, strong and empathetic to others. What advice can you offer other mums that may be thinking about starting their own business? Trust your instincts, ‘You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great!’ Accept that you will make mistakes, but learn from them. Set time parameters that work for you and your family and stick sti to them. Invest in a social media scheduling tool – this has helped me to be more strategic in the type of content I share, it’s like having my own PA! It has taken away the need to physically post something everyday, at times when I want to be focusing on my family. When you sit back and reflect, what do you love best about your business? I love the fact that pottery painting is accessible for all, covering all ages from 0-90, and all levels of talent! You’re never too young or too old to start. Pottery painting takes you away from a world otherwise occupied by screens and technology and allows you to relax and unwind. Many people comment on how therapeutic pottery painting is! Why not have a go yourself and start adding colour and creativity to your week!
