In Greek mythology, the Phoenix bursts into flames only to rise out of the ashes to be reborn. This book was inspired to help Phoenix Brown, whose parents have been absent from her life due to drug addiction, and the struggle she faces to rise above these tragic circumstances and create a better future for herself. In August of 2015, her aunt Judy Choi discovered Phoenix's poems and was moved by the depth and eloquence of her seventeen-year old niece's writing style. As a Harvard and University of Colorado-Boulder alum, Judy worked with Phoenix to write a book that could share her pain of watching her mom and dad physically and mentally deteriorate. Phoenix's poems capture the anguish, confusion, and helplessness of a child witnessing the loss of the two people she loved and trusted most, while Judy's writing is inspired by the tumultuousness and beauty of love. This collaboration also includes photographic interpretations of the poems by award winning photographer Francis George.
