Rediscovering OUTDOOR Play D

o you spend much time outside? If you’re like many Americans, you may not. In fact, largely due to new technologies, we’ve seen a mass migration indoors in recent years—for kids and adults alike. July is Outdoors Month, which invites us to consider shifting that dynamic, which is healthy on multiple levels. These tips can help you and those you love happily rediscover outdoor play.

Get a fresh take Take a look around your landscape to get a sense of immediate possibilities. You don’t need a built-in pool or play structure to have fun in your own backyard. Do you have a large, grassy area that could accommodate a volleyball net, badminton, or a croquet set? Is there a spot for digging, mud play, etc.? Can you set up an inflatable pool anywhere? Are there any trees that could be transformed into a tree house—or even a little tree seat? Is there a place for messy outdoor crafts? Do you have a sandbox?

Offer an introduction If your kids seldom frolic outdoors, you may want to suggest a few ideas for independent play, as well as ways in which you can engage as a family. For example, they might enjoy chalk art on the patio for a while, making a castle in the sandbox, playing red light, green light, or running through sprinklers. Then you can join 2

them for some splashing in the pool, re-potting of plants, reading together in the sunshine, or assembling a bouquet for the table.

Build it in Outdoor play can be both structured and free form, but you still need to create the time for it. Why not plan to turn technology off for a few hours every day and just get outside? You can organize ahead for a picnic, garden tea party, working with clay, finger-painting—or just fly by the seat of your pants with some spontaneous romping, Frisbee, or strolling around. Something as simple as seeing how many living creatures you can find together may delight your kids, or providing them with spray bottles to mist outdoor plants. How about letting them paint the doghouse?

Plan some mini-adventures You may have parks, trails, tennis courts, or a petting zoo near you that you’re not aware of. Now is a perfect time to get a fresh take on your own backyard—as well as exploring locally. Can you find a stream for wading, rock collecting, or looking for tadpoles? Is there a park that’s new to your family? Can you find a fun, challenging nature hike? How about a stable where your kids can learn to groom horses? Or perhaps a community garden where you can all participate together? As you can see, the possibilities are limited only by your imagination! The key to rediscovering outdoor play is setting aside some time, exploring your options, getting creative and putting your cares on hold—just as you did when you were a kid. Enjoy!

H

ow could delicious, organic fruit juices taste even better? When the company producing them is determined to make a positive difference as well! As a pioneer organic brand, Santa Cruz Organic® was the first to offer a wide range of organic, 100% juices and blends and the first juice processor to use all organic fruit sourced from growers certified by an independent, third-party certification organization. With a history of developing innovative products, Santa Cruz Organic currently produces more than 60 items ranging from organic fruit juices and sparkling beverages to organic fruit sauces, chocolate syrups, peanut butters and fruit spreads. What’s inspiring is that while this brand offers a wide array of organic products made from the highest quality ingredients available, they don’t stop there. Santa Cruz Organic also works tirelessly to raise awareness about the benefits of organic agriculture, running its business with a commitment to ecology. Each year, our official Green-e certified facility purchases enough renewable energy certificates for all of our production and headquarters’ energy needs. It has even reduced its waste, recycling more than 98% of refuse at its Chico, California facility, which earned a prestigious California WRAP award. This year, Santa Cruz Organic is celebrating good deeds and the spirit of helping others with the launch of the Sweet Deed Society. This program was developed with a goal of donating 160,000 Meals* to Feeding America®. Do you know someone whose deeds 4

have made life that much sweeter, helping to improve the world in some way through their daily actions? For each daily sweet deed nomination submitted, Santa Cruz Organic will donate five dollars to Feeding America®, up to $20,000, that will help provide 160,000 meals for families struggling with hunger across the country. Consumers are invited to join the Sweet Deed Society on the Santa Cruz Organic Facebook page and nominate someone who has done a good deed. Participants will also be entered into a grand prize drawing for a chance to win one of two beach vacations, awarded as a $3,500 check and a chance to win weekly prizes. To help acknowledge their good deed, the nominee can also accept their nomination, join the Sweet Deed Society and be entered for their own chance to win. Official Rules available at www.facebook.com/santacruzorganic. As the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, Feeding America® knows the value of a good deed. Santa Cruz Organic is proud to partner with them and help further their mission to feed America’s hungry and engage the country in the fight to end hunger. The Feeding America® network of more than 200 member food banks secures and distributes 3 billion pounds of donated food and grocery products every year to individuals and families—that’s a lot of sweet deeds for those in need! Santa Cruz Organic was inspired to create the Sweet Deed Society by the people that both love and truly live the philosophy behind the line of refreshing beverages and delicious foods. And just when we thought life couldn’t get any sweeter! Visit www.santacruzorganic.com or www.facebook.com/santacruzorganic. * Each $1 donated provides the equivalent of 8 meals secured by Feeding America® on behalf of local food banks.

ack in 1988, Organic Valley’s seven founding farmers believed America’s families deserved the best, most nutritious foods. Twenty-five years later, the 1,700-plus farmer-owners of the Organic Valley cooperative are still guided by that mission. The farm families of Organic Valley pledge to produce the highest quality organic foods. Their product offerings have grown to include award-winning milk, soy, cheese, butter, spreads, creams, yogurt, eggs, produce and juice. Organic Valley products can be found in supermarkets, natural foods stores and food cooperatives nationwide. Organic Valley has been a pioneer in developing industry-leading organic farming and production standards, including one of the nation’s most stringent dairy pasturing policies. Today that hard work has resulted in organic milk products that deliver over 128% more omega-3 fatty acids than natural/conventional milks. As Organic Valley C-E-I-E-I-O George Siemon likes to say, Organic Valley is a “social experiment disguised as a business.” It looks to us as if the social experiment is working in a variety of wonderful ways. hen is chewing gum actually good for your teeth? When it contains xylitol, of course! If you’re not familiar with the term, ask your dentist about it. Many dental professionals are highly impressed with xylitol’s proven oral health benefits. Xylitol is an all-natural sweetener that has been shown in clinical studies to reduce the ability of bacteria to adhere to the teeth and upper respiratory tissues. Xylitol is especially effective in reducing your risk of tooth decay and strengthening tooth enamel by increasing remineralization and calcium absorption. However, choose carefully, as some products offer too little actual xylitol to really help, or incorporate other sweeteners that interfere with xylitol’s positive effects. Fortunately, Xlear sets the standard with Spry® Sugar-free Gum from Spry Dental Defense System®. This tasty chewing gum is sweetened only with xylitol, providing the full spectrum of xylitol benefits. Spry Chewing Gum makes it easy to ensure that your sparkly whites benefit from this unique dental health ally. Chewing Spry gum several times daily helps control cavity-causing bacteria and keep your mouth feeling fresh and clean. It’s great for kids too, who may not brush their teeth after every meal. Try Peppermint, Spearmint, Cinnamon, Fresh Fruit and Green Tea flavors. Here’s to your knock-out smile! Visit www.xlear.com
