MAMA AFRIKA FILM FESTIVAL

7-10 NOVEMBER, 2017 - NAIROBI, KENYA

INTRODUCTION TO MAMA AFRIKA FILM FESTIVAL ‘With growth comes change’ UDADA Festival Trust was launched in October 2014 and to mark our 4th year anniversary, the Festival Trust will be renaming it’s festival to Mama Afrika Film Festival. The Festival has been the first and only women’s film festival in the East African region. For the past three years, it has showcased over 300 films from more than 30 countries. The festival has offered women filmmakers like Ngendo Mukii, a female animator featured in the 2nd Udada Edition 2015, a platform to reach audiences and interact with them. Her film was chosen as the opening film of the festival and she also facilitated a film animation workshop with Multimedia University Film students. The festival opened up new possibilities for her. Ng’endo has the following to say about the festival: “I'm going to be selfish and point to the opening night. I had not realised that ‘TMB’ would be the only film playing, and for me, to have an opening ceremony center around a short animation by a local artist was very empowering. It elevated and highlighted my work in a very special way and I am very thankful for that”. She emphasizes the impact the exposure has had on her work: “I have been invited to events at Alliance Française as a direct result of participating in the festival, potential funding bodies are more aware of my work, and I was offered some work as a result”.

MAMA AFRIKA AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Mama Afrika Film Festival will continue with the Udada mission of celebrating and showcasing women in the arts. The mandate of the Mama Afrika Film Festival is to: Facilitate interaction between women artists or creative and their audiences; Support and encourage women to join the creative industry. Increase the exposure of new creative works made by women or about women issues. Showcase women ‘s creative work to the Kenyan and international world for exposure. Provide opportunities for professional development. Provide a marketplace for the film industry. Develop and offer youth programs to develop the next generation of women creatives.

I AM

| 4.36min/ NETHERLANDS

Svensigne Den Hartogh I AM’ follows the story of a human being who is addicted to alcohol and struggles to find a purpose in life. A dreamy and dramatic portrait of a teenager fighting his troubles. My films explore some sort of melancholic realm and this is where ‘I AM’ started as this universal story about loneliness and how we try to connect with people. The reason why I choose to create a really dramatic fictional portrait is because I think that a lot of people suffer from depression or anxiety due to several reasons. But despite all of our differences, I am convinced that we are not so different at all. Seemingly differences in appearance make us unique, but everything rests on the same foundation. That we all need love, compassion, warmth and affection. No matter who or where we are in life.

Director Biography My name is Sven Signe den Hartogh, I’m a 24-years old artist from Utrecht, the Netherlands and I create out of the endless need for self-expression.
